Comparing Middle School General And Special Educators' Use Of Research-based Instruction In Mathematics For Students With Learni

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between general and special educators regarding the implementation of research-based strategies that target the needs of students with LD in mathematics, as well as general and special educators' perceptions of their preparedness to use instructional strategies in mathematics. A sample of general and special educators who taught mathematics to students with learning disabilities (LD) at the middle school level responded to an online survey. The survey examined teacher self-reported classroom use of instructional practices specifically aligned with NCTM standards, direct instruction, graduated instruction, grouping practices, and self-monitoring. Additionally, educators responded to perceptions of their preparedness to use the aforementioned instructional practices. From the survey results, several strategies exhibited statistically significant differences between general and special educators. Special educators showed significantly greater use of two instructional strategies, as well as significantly greater perceptions of preparedness to use two instructional strategies. Overall, significantly more special educators reported using the research-based strategies aligned with all instructional practices. Additional results, limitations, implications for practice, and recommendations for future research are provided.

Thesis advisor: Rebecca Lowenhaupt / School districts throughout the Commonwealth have engaged in initiatives to increase educators of color. Ingersoll et al. (2019) argue that while “many believe that the small number of minority teachers is caused by a lack of recruitment or intake” they concur with Pearson and Fuglei (2019) that recruitment is not the only problem. The issue is retention. Recent studies like these shed new light on the need for additional research on factors that increase the retention of educators of color. I posit that supporting the development of critical consciousness in Educators of Color can also support their retention in school districts. The purpose of this individual study is to identify the practices that Educators of Color (EOCs) report to be supportive, increase their critical consciousness, and/ or impact their retention in the district. This study centers the experiences of Educators of Color (EOCs), and amplify their voices in order to learn about the impact of school-based and district-sponsored practices. Characteristics of Mothers among Counselor Education Faculty

Pre-tenured faculty in higher education and as well as mothers have reportedly struggled with low wellness levels, high demands, little social support, and an imbalance of work and home life. Mothers in higher education and in counselor education have reported struggling with work-life balance, high scholarly productivity, and long hours as well as the emotional and physical energy demands of working with counselors-in-training. A search of the professional literature revealed a paucity of quantitative research regarding demographic characteristics, wellness levels, and social support levels of mothers among counselor education faculty (MCEs). Participants for this study were faculties of counselor education programs recruited from the Holland List of Counseling Programs and from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs online directory. A total of 180 MCEs participated (aged 29-63, with mean age 40.6 years; 83% Caucasian, 8% other, 5% African American, 3% Hispanic, <1% Asian). Results showed that faculty rank did not account for a significant difference among wellness scores of MCEs and that reported social support, tenure or non-tenure track, number of children in the care of MCEs, number of children under age 8, number of publications, and teaching workload accounted for 14% of the variance in wellness levels of MCEs. Specifically, reported higher teaching workload (β = -.194, rs2 = .35, p = .012) and higher social support (β = -.258, rs2 = .36, p = <.001) were found to be significant predictors of lower wellness levels among MCEs, both with small effects. Based on these results, MCEs may benefit from advocating that their departments and universities adapt to their unique needs to improve their levels of wellness and social support through mentoring, which, in turn, may result in not only their own increased productivity but also their students' increased wellness levels.

The Motivators that Contribute to the Migration of African American Educators from Suburban School Districts to Urban School Districts

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceived motivators contributing African American educators' decision to migrate from a suburban school district to an urban school district. The case study approach was used in an effort to capture the participants' voices and the motivators contributing to their decision to migrate to an urban school district after working as an educator in a suburban school district. The findings from this study will contribute to the existing body of literature by providing national policy makers, state policy makers, local school leaders and school district personnel information to create national, state, and local policy initiatives regarding African American educator personnel. The seven informants in this study were members of a large metropolitan area in the state of Texas and the suburban school districts bordering that metropolitan area. Since the enactment of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (2001), the achievement gap has been discussed and studied. However, few studies have investigated African American educator migration from suburban school districts to urban school districts and the strategies used by African American educators to close the achievement gap for African American students who attend those suburban schools left void of African American educators. The interpretational analysis process selected was based on Glaser and Strauss' constant comparative approach to analysis. The constant comparative data analysis generated five major themes of the motivators contributing to African American educator migration: (1) educators migrated to become social change agents, (2) educators migrated for growth opportunities, (3) educators migrated for financial increases, (4) educators migrated due to workplace relationships, and (5) educators migrated due to their perceptions and experiences in their suburban school district. My findings, based on the context of these seven African American educators, suggest that while the school district as an institution is not responsible or accountable for the African American educators migration, it can provide systems of support and initiatives for African America educators to assist them in overcoming the motivators inside of the school walls that contribute to their decision to leave.

An evaluation of the effectiveness of resilient educators (REDS) support programme among HIV and AIDS affected educators in Mpumalanga

Resilient Educators Support Programme (REds) for HIV and AIDS affected educators was initiated by the University of North West in 2006 following a research project in 2005 that highlighted the need for a support programme that addresses the challenges of educators affected by HIV and AIDS, as existing support structures were found to be inadequate. REds is implemented in phases, and with each phase it is modified to meet the needs of a broader audience of educators. The first phase was implemented in the Gauteng Province in 2006. Recommendations made from this phase were used to modify it for phase two, that is, implementation in Mpumalanga Province and two additional provinces. The goal of the research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Resilient Educators Support Programme (REds) in empowering and supporting HIV and AIDS affected educators in Mpumalanga. Programme evaluation research was adopted, using the dominant-less dominant model of combining both quantitative and qualitative research approaches, with the quantitative approach being the dominant approach. The research design for the quantitative research approach was the quasi-experimental one group pre-test post-test design whilst the collective case study design was used for the qualitative research approach. Quantitative data was collected through a group administered standardized questionnaire, the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) and for qualitative data, a non-standardized questionnaire with drawings, semi-structured interviews, observation and field notes were used. Data was collected before and after the respondents were exposed to REds. The respondents, ten educators from Sozama High School in Middelburg, were recruited using non-probability volunteer sampling method. Additional qualitative data was collected from the five members of school management team using semi-structured interviews, after the respondents were exposed to REds. Although the quantitative empirical research findings showed no significant differences between the pre- and post-test data, it seems from the qualitative approach as if the respondents found the programme addressing their support needs as HIV and AIDS affected educators and they felt empowered with knowledge and skills that they lacked and thus making them resilient. Conclusions drawn from the qualitative research findings indicated that REds Support Programme was effective in meeting the support needs of HIV and AIDS affected educators in Mpumalanga. From a quantitative perspective, it is recommended that the reason/s for the non-significant test results from the standardized questionnaire be investigated. In order for me to achieve this aim, I used mixed methods to gather data: qualitative and quantitative data were gathered in the pre- and post-tests (before and after the implementation of REds) to comment on participant empowerment. I interpreted the data to comment on whether and how the REds programme supported educators affected by HIV/AIDS. Previous Reds piloting was done with urban educators. My piloting would explore if and how REds would enable rural educators. To actualise the study, I recruited ten participants (two males and eight females), but only the eight females completed the study. My participants were Sesotho-speaking educators frorn one of the primary schools in the rural area in the Thabo Mofutsanyana district (QwaQwa area) and all were affected by the pandemic. My findings indicated that REds was a meaningful intervention, but that it needs to be improved as regards the following: • Facilitators should take note of the strengths that participants have relating to HIV/AIDS. • Future REds should encourage positive interpersonal relationships. • The entire staff and different stakeholders in the community should be involved in future REds participation. • REds should be an ongoing intervention strategy for supporting infected educators and those otherwise affected by the pandemic. / M.Ed., North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2010

Why is OBE failing in the township schools of the Free State Goldfields?

Published Aticle / The learners going through outcomes-based education (OBE) were expected to acquire skills which would help them to become critical thinkers, good workers and good citizens. However, this is not happening for learners in the Free State Goldfields' township schools, due to the unsuccessful implementation of OBE in these schools. The purpose of this study is to investigate why OBE is failing in the Free State Goldfields' township schools. In order to determine these reasons, a questionnaire was developed and administered on 183 educators from township primary schools in the Free State Goldfields. Focus group interviews were also conducted to confirm information collected through the questionnaire. Data collected was qualitatively analysed. It was found that the inadequate professional training received by educators, the poor home backgrounds of learners, illiteracy of parents, and a lack of adequate resources and facilities were the main reasons why the implementation of OBE was not succeeding in these schools. The re-training of the township school educators, the involvement of parents and the provision of resources may help to implement OBE more effectively in these schools.

The appointment process of education managers and its consequences for schools

Dissertation / The aim of the study was to investigate the appointment process of education managers and the consequences of this for schools. A literature study was conducted on these two aspects. This was followed by a survey involving 67 educators from three geographically divergent secondary schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal, namely an urban, rural and peri-urban school. The respondents’ views indicate flaws in the current system related to: the minimum requirements for principalship, the shortlisting and interview processes and the role of bias in the selection of candidates. Respondents also believed that insufficient attention was paid to induction and mentorship programmes. The before mentioned impacted negatively on the school’s functionality regarding quality assurance, inter-personal relations, decision-making, parental involvement and learner discipline. These relate to low educator morale. The findings of the study indicate that the current system of educator promotions needs to revised so as to improve best practice in the profession.

The relationship between professional socialisation and job satisfaction of nurse educators of a provincial nursing college in South Africa / Mirriam Sibongile Mbambo

The nursing education institutions play a major role in the training of nurses to curb the shortage of nurses in the country. Nurse educators assist with the primary socialisation of new nurses into the nursing profession. Likewise, new nurse educators need to be socialised into the nursing education system. Proper socialisation of new educators into the education system is vital for the continuity and reinforcing of professional values. The purpose of the study was to identify and describe the relationship between professional socialisation and job satisfaction of nurse educators of a provincial college in South Africa. A quantitative, descriptive correlational design was used for the study. The sample consisted of nurse educators (N=102) employed by the Kwa Zulu Department of Health with the Kwa Zulu College of Nursing (KZNCN). Data was collected using a structured questionnaire, which included both the Nurses Professional Values Scale-Revised (NPVS-R) questionnaire and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ). Statistical data analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) programmes. The results showed reliability of the NPVS-R questionnaire with Cronbach’s alpha (α) ranging between .637 and .811 and between .798 and .883 for the MSQ. Confirmatory factor analysis for the NPVS-R and exploratory factor analysis for the MSQ both had p-value of .0001 concluding a statistical significance of the questionnaires with a sufficiently high correlation. Again a positive correlation coefficient (r>.328) was concluded amongst the demographic data and the NPVS-R and MSQ. The null hypothesis was rejected since a good correlation between the professional socialisation and the job satisfaction statements of nurse educators of a provincial college was concluded. Recommendations include: proper socialisation and mentorship of new educators into the new education role for both personal and professional development and the proper utilisation of individual skills and expertise in order to prevent animosity and job dissatisfaction.
