Alturk, Abed, Gebregziabher, Simon January 2021 (has links)

Motivations and Experiences of an Airbnb Host: An Explorative Study in Umeå, Sweden

Wang, Sihan January 2019 (has links)
In recent years, a new wave power of sharing economy, or known as collaborative consumption has emerged in accommodation, and tourism marketplaces (Guttentag, 2015). Airbnb is one of the most talked-about among the sharing hospitality companies, which is an online marketplace and a platform connecting worldwide travelers with local hosts somewhere. Although Airbnb has two types of users, guests and hosts, in current studies of Airbnb hosts, most researchers focus on the hosts from a business perspective. This study aimed to identify and understand hosts’ motivations to start the Airbnb business, and the benefits and challenges in a host’s experience. The informal interview was the method for the study, and data were processed by thematic analysis. The results find that motivations varied from host to host when sharing nature in common. The benefits overweighed the challenges in each host’s experience since participants could gain economic benefits (extra income), mental health (brain exercise for old hosts) and well-being (cross-cultural social learning) in sharing economy. Worries about security and extra physical work did not bother most hosts, and the effects of a tax on Airbnb hosts were not obvious.

Museums’ Responses to Tourism Sessonality : A Case Study in Umeå, Sweden

Wang, Sihan January 2019 (has links)
In the tourism literature, seasonality issues are widely existing in almost every destination and well documented particularly in some case located where it is peripheral, and cold-weather. Hotels and entrepreneurs attracted most attention due to the negative effects of seasonality on their business. This is problematic actually the non-profit making actors play a significant role in supplying touristic resources and marketing a destination. Therefore, museums’ responses to seasonality make sense. This thesis, therefore, applying an institutional analysis, examines seasonal patterns of the museums and their knowledge of tourism seasonality, investigates positive and negative effects of seasonality on the museums, and finds out how they tackle seasonality. The aim is to improve understanding and increase knowledge of tourism seasonality and complement the previous research on tourism seasonality with museum perspective. Both descriptive statistics and interviews are applied to serve the aim. The analysis of statistics supplies a statistical seasonal pattern of the study location while four informant interviews were conducted with respondents from tourism organizations and museums. The results show that the seasonal pattern of museums is highly relevant to the seasonal pattern in Umeå. For the museums the negative effects varied from one to another but outweighed the positive ones for all of them. Three strategies are addressed in the way that these museums tackled seasonality. Institutional performance is evaluated in the discussion chapter followed by suggestions for future work.

Longing for a Home : Young people’s struggles in Stockholm’s second-hand housing market

Sjörén, Herman January 2021 (has links)
Many young people in the Stockholm metropolitan area struggle with accessing the formal housing market and are therefore relying on short-term, second-hand contracts. By drawing on ten semi-structured interviews this essay explores the second-hand tenant’s ability to feel a sense of belonging towards their home. The tenants are often unable to just be in their home and instead feel they need to conform to the landlord’s ideas of proper behaviour.Through the unequal power relations between landlord and tenant the tenants rarely feel at ease in their home. By using a phenomenological conceptualisation of home, I reason that home loses its ability to anchor a person’s sense self in the world and as a result the tenants become more isolated and detached.

Öresundsbrons effekter på tillväxten i Skåne / The effects of the Öresund bridge on growth in Skåne

Pettersson, Jacob, Fredriksson, Ludvig January 2021 (has links)
A large proportion of previous research on infrastructure has highlighted the connection between an investment in transport infrastructure and increased economic growth. Researchers agree that an expanded transport system, through investment in infrastructure, is a necessity for regions and cities to grow. With this study we want to investigate whether the construction of “Öresundsbron” have had an impact on regional economic growth in Skåne.The research method to answer the purpose of the study has been the synthetic control method. The synthetic control method constructs a synthetic Skåne which will be an equivalent to Skåne's regional economic growth if the bridge had never been built. The synthetic control method is based on a weighted average of different variables for 20 Swedish regions that are included in the control group. The results from the synthetic control method show that Öresundsbron did not have any significant effect on regional economic growth in Skåne, compared to if the bridge had never been built.

Klockar, Zack, Kåhre Zäll, Olle January 2020 (has links)
Klockar, Z., och Kåhre Zäll, O. 2020. Deltagandeprocessen under vindkraftsetableringen på Ripfjället. Uppsatser Kulturgeografiska institutionen, Uppsala universitet.

Assessment of Ukraine as an outsourcing destination for Nordic IT Companies

Protsyuk, Yevgeniy January 2012 (has links)
In the modern competive situation on globalized market it is extremely important to find a comparative advantage that could place the company on the edge of rivalry on the market, either internal or international. Many companies face the issue of the lack or unaccessibility of resources. In such circumstances companies can find appropriate solution in outsourcing or offshoring their processes. In addition, many companies not only adopt outsourcing into the working process, but also build their business around Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO) as a core competency of the company. Outsourcing in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Industry becomes a leading trend in many areas of economy enabled by fast development of communication technologies.      In this paper we studied outsourcing in general, outsourcing in ICT sector as well as the modern  position of Ukraine on the global ITO market and its perspective of cooperation with Nordic companies.     Theoretical data were analyzed in static, reflecting modern state of affairs in this industry branch, and dynamic way, showing the outcomes of development of the industry in the country during the last few years. Empirical study was fulfilled through a case study. Ukrainian ITO industry was shown as an attractive outsourcing destination for companies from Nordic region, with some drawbacks.

Regional Innovation Systems: an application and a framework / Regionala innovationssystem: en tillämpning och ett ramverk

Dargahi, Ali January 2016 (has links)
Boosting economic growth and competitiveness in different spatial contexts such as national, regional, metropolitan etc. has always been in the epicenter of both large and small-scale planning efforts pursued at different levels of government from local to extra- regional and their significance is still, and probably will always be, on the rise given the ever increasing competition in today’s, and yet-to-come future world. In order to achieve this, relevant authorities have devised and implemented a vast variety of policies and approaches which are, more often than not, based on abundance of theoretical contributions in the field of economic geography. This thesis explores one of the main theoretical contributions to this field being Innovation Systems theory and tries to adapt the concept, originally intended for application at a larger scale, to the perspective of an individual firm rather than a whole production system while briefly using empirics from the spatial context of Adelaide/South Australia, loosely defined as a region, and the sectoral context of electricity infrastructure. The initial conclusion here is that applying the concept to the more manageable context of an individual firm, may have the potential to enable one to identify the relevant organizational and institutional setup more effectively and present a better explanatory description of their role in the whole Innovation system and in turn, can contribute to a more informed planning and policy- making process for regional economic growth.

Belong Anywhere, Commodify Everywhere. : A critical look into the state of private short-term rentals in Stockholm, Sweden. / Belong Anywhere, Commodify Everywhere.

Thoem, James January 2015 (has links)
Under the banner of the ‘sharing economy’, private short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb have witnessed tremendous success, facilitating millions of overnight stays in everyday homes. And while the issue has garnered considerable attention from both popular media and policy makers in cities such as New York, Amsterdam, London and Berlin, little attention has been paid to the topic in Stockholm, Sweden as well as academic literature. With this absence of discussion serving as a point of departure, I analyze both primary and secondary data pertaining to the rise of Airbnb in Stockholm. With a theoretical lens based in critical poststructuralist thought, I argue that Airbnb is embedded within neoliberal urbanism, fueling the social and economic forces behind gentrification. In order to address the problematic implications of Airbnb and similar platforms, I suggest policymakers and applicable actors to review the current taxing scheme, consider temporal restrictions, align short-term rental laws with subletting laws and communicate clearly.

Property values, parks and crime: A hedonic analysis in Stockholm, Sweden

Iqbal, Asifa January 2012 (has links)
A park is a desirable feature when people are purchasing a property. Buyers are ready to pay more for properties surrounded by natural amenities, such as a pleasant park. However, if a park is perceived as unsafe by local residents, then it may have a negative effect on housing prices. The aim of this study is to investigate the importance of urban parks in Stockholm, capital of Sweden, and to find evidence of whether people in Stockholm are willing to pay extra for parks when purchasing an apartment. This study hypothesized that people’s willingness to pay for urban parks and green spaces is affected by crime. The methodology had two stages. An extensive field work was performed in a selected number of parks to help characterize the parks in Stockholm. This was later followed by the analysis of 2008’s apartment sales using hedonic modelling combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques. Results suggest that the effect of parks vary by park type. An aggregated measure of parks lower apartment prices but the effect turns out to be positive in some cases, or insignificant, when parks are broken down by types. For instance, parks with cultural features, forest feeling, skating and features of national interest increase apartment prices. However, if park have ball games, marina, boating facilities, skate board facilities and frequent social events – these features tend to reduce property values. These findings support the idea that the impact of park on property value depends on the type of park. Contrary to was expected, the park impact on prices does not seem to be affected by seasonal variations (e.g., summer versus winter), only individual months seem to affect prices. More interestingly, crime affects the quality of parks and, in its turn, the relationship between parks and prices. Results show that parks that originally show a positive impact on prices may affect prices negatively if they have relatively high rates of violence and vandalism. The study finalizes with a discussion these results and their implication for future research.
