Stories from a Chair: A Life Exquisite

Blinkhorn, Jessica Elaine 04 April 2010 (has links)
Exquisite is defined as carefully selected or sought out. I believe myself to be a selected soul placed in a body of circumstance. My work is self-explorative and telling of those circumstances in hopes of evoking empathy. Our bodies function and exist on many different levels. What I understand as normal for most differs vastly from what is normal for me. I aim to offer my perspective on the world, establish understanding, and blur the lines of normalcy.

The study of the construction of the self-feminine is highlighted in two major literary works of the Brazilian literature, one from 1942, Minha vida de menina, by Helena Morley; and another from 1973, As meninas, by Lygia Fagundes Telles. On the one hand, Morley describes a peaceful everyday life in a small town in Minas Gerais state in the end of the 19th century and, on the other hand, a bursting, urban, cosmopolitan and politicized life is tackled by Lygia Fagundes Telles. Tele’s introspective narrative in As meninas probes the human soul and explores the character’s existencial inquietudes. Through Lia, Ana Clara, and Lorena, the author analyses pshyhological, religious, philosophical and moral problems related to urban life. The narrators’ differing points of view, one belonging to the 19th century and the other three to the 20th century, result in na appreciation of the changing social landscape occupied by women. In a surprising way, Morley is ahead of her time when she questions the feminine condition, this being the most outstanding aspect of her book. Minha vida de menina and As meninas present us with diverse and distinct women’s profiles that, while consolidating their feminine positions in the society they are inserted, allow us to put them in check. Distinct points of view make us familiar with the many facets of the historical time these women lived. The result is a new history, a history interpreted by a female point of view. Historical moments such as the republic proclamation, slavery abolition and the military dictatorship are recreated by each of these women. The temporal treatment and the representation of the female body are categories representative, in these books, of the birth and development of a new Brazilian women, a freer woman concerning their bodies and possibilities of expression. Each author builds time in their works in a particular... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

"Une transformation profonde": Decay and Beauty in Cléo from 5 to 7

Garver, Susan J. 13 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Cléo from 5 to 7 is perhaps the most famous work of influential French filmmaker Agnès Varda, who is often called the "Grande Dame of the New Wave". The depth of symbolism, the richness of imagery, the beginnings of cinécriture (a Varda-ism describing cinema as a form of writing that uses all the tools available to a filmmaker, not just words), and the charm of the story have guaranteed Cléo's popularity with scholars and audiences alike. Current scholarship has tended to focus on a few aspects of Cléo, including her role as a flâneuse, the use of mirrors and the theme of gazing, time and the division of the film into chapters, the female gaze, and femininity. I will examine the thematic of decay, nature, and beauty in Cléo. Beginning by linking it to her more contemporary documentary The Gleaners and I, I will analyze how Varda undermines conventional ideas of health, youth, and beauty by deconstructing Cléo's world through the threat of disease, only to show how Cléo regains autonomy and control of herself by learning to embrace the inevitability of decay in nature, and in her own body. I will rely on the theories in Elaine Scarry's The Body in Pain to show how Cléo's changing relationship to her body constitute the profound transformation mentioned at the beginning of the film. I will also examine Cléo's cancer in light of Susan Sontag's essay Illness as Metaphor. We will see how Varda uses cinécriture to express these ideas, especially in regards to the dialogue between characters, visual symbols, and the use of space.

ONTIÑANO ABADÍAS, MARÍA CARMEN 07 April 2014 (has links)
Hiding in Plain Sight : A Gynocritical Reading of Rochester’s Narrative in Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea

Hennig, Emma January 2022 (has links)
This essay is the result of a close-reading of the male protagonist’s narrative in Jean Rhys’s novel Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). His narrative was examined through an interpretive lens layered with a combination of several critical onsets that form the pillars of Elaine Showalter’s theory of a metaphysical female crescent outside of male consciousness. With a combination of gynocriticism, postcolonial feminism, cultural theory and psychoanalysis, this essay charted the inner expedition of the male protagonist as he travels to the Caribbean and marries his new wife. The findings showed how his inner journey takes him to the borderlands of his consciousness and language. On the other side of the border is the female crescent, the wild zone, where women and wilderness taunt him and hide from him in plain sight. Stretching himself to the limits of his conscious mind, the male protagonist Rochester loses his grip on reality and gets overwhelmed by feelings of fear and anger.
