A Hybrid Technique of Energy Harvesting from Mechanical Vibration and Ambient Illumination

Rahman, M Shafiqur 10 August 2016 (has links)
Hybrid energy harvesting is a concept applied for improving the performance of the conventional stand-alone energy harvesters. The thesis presents the analytical formulations and characterization of a hybrid energy harvester that incorporates photovoltaic, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrostatic mechanisms. The initial voltage required for electrostatic mechanism is obtained by the photovoltaic technique. Other mechanisms are embedded into a bimorph piezoelectric cantilever beam having a tip magnet and two sets of comb electrodes on two sides of its substructure. All the segments are interconnected by an electric circuit to generate combined output when subjected to vibration and solar illumination. Results for power output have been obtained at resonance frequency using an optimum load resistance. As the power transduced by each of the mechanisms is combined, more power is generated than those obtained by stand-alone mechanisms. The synergistic feature of this research is further promoted by adding fatigue analysis using finite element method.

Étude de la dynamique des poussières lunaires et de leur impact sur les systèmes d'exploration / Study of lunar dust dynamic and of their impact on exploration systems

Champlain, Amandine 19 December 2016 (has links)
The lunar exploration represents a major part of all national space agencies activities. The scientists have studied the interactions of the lunar surface with the surrounding plasma but also with equipment sent on the lunar surface. Observations have shown the presence of regolith particles covering the surface of the Moon. This layer of dust grains can be several meters thick and these dust particles are very abrasive and adhesive. They are an important risk for equipment sent on the Moon. Thus, the understanding of the origins of dust grains transport is vital to successfully plan future missions. e lunar dust dynamics can be produced by electrostatic phenomena, especially at boundaries between shadowed and unlit regions. Observations of a dust Cloud above the lunar surface are evidence of this dynamic. However, the mechanisms causing this dust Cloud are unknown. It is thus necessary to understand the interactions between dust grains and the lunar environment in order to prevent the pollution of equipment on the lunar surface. The objective of this PhD thesis is the understanding and the modelling of dust particles charge and electrostatic transport near boundaries between shadow and light. An experimental device has been developed to observe dust grains electrostatic transport and to allow a physical understanding of this dynamic. The tests allowed to highlight the most important parameters in the behavior of dust particles. They also led to the adaptation of a numerical model pre-existing and enabled to constraint the parameters used in the model in order to make it more accurate.

Experimental determination of ohmic resistivity of fly ash for design of electrostatic precipitators.

Ozawa, Marcelo 10 July 2003 (has links)
This report is a collection of elements to be used in the design of Electrostatic Precipitators, with experimental data of fly ashes from combustion gases of Mineral Coal Fired Boilers. The aims of this research are to construct a standard device to measure the ohmic resistivity of materials, to get data of ohmic resistivity of fly ashes from mineral coals used in Brazil and with this data, to list recommendations about the key points to size electrostatic precipitators (calculation of specific collection area), when this equipment is arranged after one boiler that burns Brazilian mineral coals. The method used was based on the ASME Standard, in which the fly ash (material to be tested) is put between the discharge and the collecting electrodes, a high electrical tension is applied until the electrical break down tension to be reached; at this moment, the resistivity is measured. The construction of this device and the experimental procedure were conducted according to this standard. The tested materials were collected from existing Electrostatic Precipitator of South of Brazil, where the mineral coal is commonly used. The results indicated low values of ohmic resistivity of the Brazilian fly ashes, if compared to results of coals from other countries. Its variation with the temperature has the same behavior of fly ashes from other countries, i.e., the ohmic resistivity increases when the temperature increases. It was also executed tests with particulate materials from electrostatic precipitator of biomass boiler whose ohmic resistivity is lower than the Brazilian mineral coal. The tested material, chemical composition, and collecting process were totally described, available and a full analysis can be executed; these data are inedita in Brazil. These results allow to list the recommendations to design Electrostatic Precipitators for Brazil Mineral Coal Fired Boilers.

Investigação dos multipolos atômicos da teoria quântica de átomos em moléculas no estudo de propriedades moleculares / Investigation of atomic multipolos from quantum theory of atoms in molecules in study of molecular properties

Luiz Alberto Terrabuio 21 February 2013 (has links)
The charges, dipoles, quadrupoles and high order terms, along with their derivatives, allow a better understanding of electric properties. We can cite dipole moments, dipole moment derivatives, infrared intensities, electrostatic potentials and electrostatic forces. The multipoles treated here are obtained from the Quantum Theory of Atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and they are compared with CHELPG (CHarges from Electrostatic Potentials using a Grid based method) results. The investigations of this project can be divided in two distinct parts and the first one focuses in the performance of atomic multipoles in the description of electrostatic potentials when one positive particle interacts with molecules. Some simple diatomic (F2 , Cl2 , BF, AlF, BeO, MgO, LiH and NaCl) and polyatomic molecules (H2O, H2CO, NH3 ,PH3 ,BF3 and CO2) were considered in this investigation and the calculations were carried out at the B3LYP/6-311G(3d,3p) level. The second part of this dissertation was a study of infrared intensities in vibrational modes by means of the charge-charge flux -dipole flux model. The systems treated now are dimers with hydrogen bonds such as homodimers (H2O-H2O, HF-HF, HCl-HCl, HCN-HCN, HNC-HNC and NH3-NH3) and heterodimers (HF-HCN, HCl-HF and HF-H2O). The calculations of these systems were carried out at the CCSD/cc-pVQZ-mod level. The results suggest that QTAIM multipoles are better in describing electrostatic potentials in almost all proton-molecule arrangements than CHELPG charges. The charge-charge flux -dipole flux model can reproduce infrared intensities of dimer with hydrogen bonds. Finally, the increase in intensities of X-H stretching modes associated to the donor monomer in linear dimers is explained by changes in charge flux contributions during dimerization.

Russman, Felipe Boff January 2018 (has links)
The present dissertation studies the one and three-dimensional dynamics of an electrically charged solitary particle under the action of a slowly modulated high frequency electrostatic carrier wave. The wave gives the particle electrical potential energy and its movement is known through the use of Hamiltonian formalism, where relativistic e ects are considered due to the high velocities involved in the process. Meanwhile the maximum speed experienced by the particle remains su ciently below the characteristic phase velocity of the accelerating carrier wave, its dynamics can be well described by a re ned ponderomotive approach. With this approach, the average, maximum and minimum speed developed by the particle along its movement through the curves that permeate and envelop the velocity pro le. The limits of validity of the approximation are well established and, once exceeded, the particle with resonant velocity is captured by the wave. Under the appropriate conditions calculated in this work, the capture mechanism spontaneously installs the optimum phase particle relative to the wave and accelerates towards the speed of light in the vacuum. At same time, the acceleration process is optimized by focusing the particle towards the wave propagation axis for a certain usable time interval and length.

Modeling and fabrication of tunable 3D integrated Mirau micro-interferometers / Modélisation et fabrication de microinterféromètres Mirau accordables intégrés 3D

Xu, Wei 12 December 2014 (has links)
Mirau-Type interferometers are widely used in full field optical 3D profilometers and vibrometers and other applications in biology and medicine fields have been demonstrated. When it was started, this thesis was the first attempt towards the realization of a fully integrated and tunable Mirau interferometer in silicon MEMS technology. The proposed design is based on 3D hybrid integration of an out-Of plane reference micro-Mirror scanner wafer and a optical beam splitter wafer. The major novelty of the micro-Mirror scanner design is the use of self-Aligned vertical electrostatic combs micro-Actuators made from double SOI (DSOI) wafers. Electromechanical modeling by semi-Analytical modeling and finite element simulations demonstrated that the combination of this electrostatic actuation with optimized serpentine suspension springs allows a large range, bidirectional and symmetrical vertical translation (+/-20µm) of the reference mirror. An original fabrication process of this mirror scanner, largely relying on Deep Reactive Ion Etching and on innovative patterning techniques with dry photosensitive films, was investigated, and the main critical fabrication steps were successfully demonstrated with commercial Si, SOI and DSOI substrates. The semi-Reflective broadband beam splitter was designed to be realized by a dielectric SiO2/SiNx multilayer membrane technology previously developed at IEF. Assembly of the mirror scanner and the beam splitter wafers will be investigated in the future to obtain integrated tunable Mirau interferometer arrays allowing parallelized phase shifting interferometry and low coherence scanning interferometry measurements in various wavelength ranges.

Computational study of electrostatic contribution to membrane dynamics

Kiselev, Vladimir January 2011 (has links)
Electrostatics plays a crucial role in the membrane biology. Negatively charged lipids (such as PS, PA and PIP2) are subject to redistribution under the action of electrostatic forces during various signalling events. Membrane recruitment of multiple signalling proteins (such as MARCKS or Src kinase) is often maintained by positively charged polybasic domains (PD). Even though adsorption of these proteins to the cellular membrane has been extensively investigated, very little is known about how electrostatic interactions contribute to their membrane lateral dynamics. This thesis presents an investigation of the contribution of electrostatic interactions to the membrane lateral dynamics by means of novel computational tools. First, I developed a dynamic Monte-Carlo automaton that faithfully simulates lateral diffusion of the adsorbed positively charged PD of a peripheral membrane protein, as well as the dynamics of mono- (PS, PA) and polyvalent (PIP2) anionic lipids within the bilayer. This model allowed to investigate the major characteristics of protein-membrane diffusion on the uniform membrane. In agreement with earlier results, the simulations revealed the following microscopic phenomena: 1) Electrostatic lipid demixing in the vicinity of the PD; 2) PD interacts with PIP2 stronger than with monovalent lipids. On the spatially heterogeneous membrane the automaton predicted a directional drift of the PD, which was validated by a simple mean-field analytical model. The predicted phenomenon could potentially play a major role in membrane domain formation. To test this hypothesis and to investigate the membrane dynamics on larger scales I developed a continuous model, which was based on the results of the automaton simulations. The results of the continuous model and the Monte-Carlo simulations were shown to be in quantitative agreement. The continuous model allows one to simulate the electrostatic membrane dynamics on micrometer scales and can be used to describe various biologically important processes, such as endocytic cup initiation.

Transporte de partículas e energia no plasma do tokamak TBR-1: diagnósticos e estudo experimental / Transport of particles and energy in the plasma of tokamak TBR-1: diagnostic and experimental study

Silva, Ruy Pepe da 30 June 1989 (has links)
E\'\'APROXIMADAMENTE IGUAL A\' 1,2 x \'10 POT. -4\'s). / The study of the plasma edge in Tokamak machines has increased in recent last years, since the recognition that the behavior of the plasma core is influenced by the Physical processes that occur in the edge region. This work develops an experimental stud) of plasma transport properties in the shadow region of TBR-l limiter. TBR-l is a small Tokamak in operation in the Physics Institute of São Paulo University. We have also determined the global confinement time of particles and energy. We have used three diagnostics: a Langmuir probe, an ion sensitive probe, and a microwave interferometer. Initially we discuss the use of Langmuir probes in Tokamak machines to obtain temporal and radial profiles of electron temperature, plasma density and potential; we show also the experimental arrangement used in the TBR-l for this diagnostic. Then, we discuss the design and construction of an ion sensitive probe associated with an electronic system, that was used to obtain, simultaneously, local ion and electron temperature. Finally we discuss a microwave interferometry system that has been built for the TBR-1. The microwave generator is a reflex Klystron (f = 65 GHz), and with the interferometer we obtained electron density time profiles of the center of TBR-l plasma column. All the electronics associated with the interferometer were designed and built in our laboratory. The results obtained with the probes are discussed with the help of a collisionless model for Tokamak scrape-off plasma. With the radial e-foldings of electron temperature (e 2.6 cm) and density (n 1.4 cm), and the sheath electron transmission coefficient (e 4) we have determined the cross-field diffusion coefficient (D1 6 m2s-1) and the electron cross-field thermal diffusivity (e1 8 m2s-1). These results indicate values near those predicted by the Bohm model. The measurements of electron and ion temperature shows a clear thermal decoupling between ions and electrons (T1/Te 2). The measurements of plasma parameters in the center of the plasma column, with that obtained with the probes permitted the determination of the particle (p 1.8 x 10-3s) and energy (e 1.2 x10-4s) global confinement times. These results were compared with those predicted by scaling laws.

Electrostatic precipitator to collect large quantities of particulate matter

Ong, Chun Hoe 15 December 2017 (has links)
Traditional aerosol samplers are limited in their abilities to collect large quantities of particulate matter due to their low flow rates, high pressure drops, and are noise intrusiveness. The goal of this study was to develop an alternate aerosol sampler using electrostatic precipitation technology that was safe and not noise intrusive to be deployed in homes. The O-Ion B-1000 was selected as the most suitable electrostatic precipitator (ESP) for achieving the goal of this study because of its affordability, the design of its collection electrode and its high flow rate. The collection efficiency of the ESP was assessed for three aerosols; Arizona Road Dust (ARD), NaCl and diesel fumes. ARD was found to have the highest average collection efficiency (65%) followed by NaCl (43%) and lastly diesel fumes (41%). A method for recovering the particulate matter deposited on the collection electrode was developed. The dust collected on the electrode was recovered onto polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters moistened with deionized water. Additionally, the recovery of the three test aerosols, ARD, NaCl, and diesel fumes, from the collection electrode was assessed. A gravimetric analysis was done to determine the amount of dust recovered. The collection efficiency was used to calculate the amount of mass expected on the filter for a particular aerosol. NaCl had the highest recovery at 95% recovery, followed by ARD (73%) and lastly diesel fumes (50%). Two identical ESPs were also deployed in an office and in a bedroom, 104.47 mg and 9.64 mg of particulate matter (PM) was recovered respectively. The noise and ozone level produced by the ESP was evaluated to determine the ESP’s viability as a household aerosol sampler. The ESP’s high setting had a noise level of 45.8 dB and ozone generation rate of 0.036 mg/min. The results of the calculation showed that in an averaged size unventilated room (6.10 m × 6.10 m × 2.44 m), it would take 6 hours and 53 minutes for the ozone levels to reach the recommended maximum exposure limits per National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Additionally, a ventilation of 230 L/min is needed in order to prevent the ozone levels generated by the ESP from exceeding maximum exposure limits per NAAQS. Overall, the O-Ion B-1000 met the criteria of collecting 1 mg of PM in a 24 hour sampling for ARD and NaCl. Diesel fumes however, required 30 hours to collect 1 mg of PM. The noise levels generated by the ESP set on high was one dB above the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for indoor noise limit. However, the noise is proportional to inverse distance squared; the ESP should not pose a problem during household deployment. Ozone generated by the ESP was also found to be below 0.07 ppm as set by the EPA with an average ventilation of 230 L/min. The average ventilation of a household is 1500 L/min, thus the ozone generated by the ESP would not surpass 0.07 ppm. However, the ESP should not be deployed in unventilated rooms for a period of more than 6 hours and 53 minutes.
