The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the ingestion of meal and pelleted diets on eggshell porosity and thickness, water loss and hatchability percentages of partridge (Rhynchotus rufescens) eggs. The eggs (n=100) were divided into five different weight classes (1: 35-45 g, 2: 46-50 g, 3: 51-55 g, 4: 56-60 g, 5: 61-70 g). Parts from different regions (air space, equator and small end) of each eggshell were analized in order to count pore numbers. Eggshell thickness measurements were carried out after removal of the egg membranes. The eggs used in the analyses of the water loss and hatchability percentages were weighed, desinfected, and then incubated (T=35.5oC and RH=60%). On the 16th day of incubation, these eggs were transferred to a hatchery maintained at temperature and RH similar to those used in the incubator, where they were kept until hatching. The results showed that the mean number of eggshell pores changed among the three regions of the eggshell and egg weight classes, and also between the physical form of diets. Ingestion of pelleted diet increased eggshell thickness; however, hatchability and water loss percentages remained unchanged.

Impact of Parthenogenetic Development on Egg Albumen Characteristics and Subsequent Fertilization Success in Chinese Painted QuailSanta Rosa, Priscila 15 August 2014 (has links)
Parthenogenetic development (PD) in Chinese Painted quail decreases hatchability and increases early embryonic mortality. The objectives of this study were to determine if PD alters egg albumen ions, gases, and pH (virgin and mated hens) as well as the success of subsequent fertilization in mated quail and if egg storage and incubation temperature increase PD. In virgin hens, PD altered albumen characteristics over incubation. In fact, albumen from mated and virgin hens exhibiting PD showed similar albumen characteristics, and these characteristics were similar to early dead embryos in mated hens. Also, mated hens selected for parthenogenesis had less sperm holes in the perivitelline membrane and a higher percentage of eggs without holes as compared to birds not selected for parthenogenesis. Increasing storage and incubational temperature increased PD and parthenogen size. In conclusion, PD alters egg albumen characteristics, decreases fertility, and can be affected by storage and incubation temperatures.

A remoção do folículo dominante como estratégia anti-luteolítica em bovinos / The removal of the dominant follicle as antiluteolytic strategy in cattleMachado, Rui 22 August 2005 (has links)
In addition, maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) requires an optimum uterine environment, which directly depends on luteal function and adequate levels of circulating progesterone. The aim of this study was to test different strategies to optimize luteal function and prevent the influence of a DOM throughout the critical period (CP) for MRP (from D13 to D20 after estrus). Different approaches were tested. In exp.1, 23 Nelore cows were treated with the ovsync protocol to induce a synchronized estrus (D0). Cows received: Gc (n=7) - nothing else; ThCG (n=5) - 3000 IU of hCG five days (D5) after estrus; TE2 (n=6) - 5mg of 17b-estradiol (E2) on D12; ThCG/E2 (n=5) - hCG/D5 + E2/D12. Ultrasound evaluation and plasmatic progesterone concentration ([P4]) throughout estrous cycle allowed to conclude: E2 reprogrammed ovarian cycle by preventing the presence (P⁢.05) of a DOM during almost all CP (0.6±.7 days within the D15 to D20 interval) but induced luteolysis; cows receiving hCG developed accessory corpus luteum and had higher [P4] up to D13 (P⁢.05). Therefore, luteolysis was not delayed and luteal phase was not prolonged. In exp.2, same treatments were imposed to 220 Nelore cows (55 per group) after a timed artificial insemination (TAI). Pregnancy rates (PR) at TAI or at AIs thereafter over a 64-day period were reduced (P⁢0.05) by using E2 and hCG was not capable to improve those PR. In exp.3, postpartum Red Angus cows were estrus synchronized (D0) and received: nothing else (GCT, n=5) or 200mg of gonadorrelin on D5 plus 3000 IU hCG on D13 (GRF, n=5); or ablation of all follicles ³7mm through follicular aspiration on D14, D17 and D20 (GRM, n=5). GRF had delayed luteolysis (18.2±1.0b days, 23.6±1.0a days, 18.7±1.2b days for GCT, GRF, GRM, respectively) and higher [P4] than other groups. Follicles larger than 7mm were observed in all occasions of aspiration. In could be concluded that: a) E2 allowed to consistently reschedule follicular development but caused luteolysis and its use was detrimental to PR; b) hCG improved luteal function but did not increase PR; c) ablation of 7mm follicles did not prevent a DOM throughout CP for MRP and d) GnRH/hCG association optimized luteal function, delayed luteolysis and prolonged luteal phase in such a way that all CP was under progesterone influence

Embryonic Mortality and Sex Ratios in the Tree SparrowSvensson, Magnus January 2006 (has links)
<p>Tree sparrows (Passer montanus) have been studied in two areas in Sweden since 1997. At both sites, tree sparrow eggs had remarkably low hatching success. On average only 60% of the eggs hatched. Analyses have shown that this was caused by embryonic mortality, which was highly sex biased. About 70 % of the dead embryos were males, while about 65 % of all fledged nestlings were females. Impaired hatching success here related to two factors. Hatching success was lower for pairs with a male in poor body condition, and it was lower in areas with a high local population density. </p><p>A sex bias in the mortality early in life has been demonstrated in several species. Since the competitive ability of males is determined by conditions early in life, parents with poor provisioning capacity should prefer to produce female offspring in broods reared under poor conditions. The body condition of a tree sparrow during the nestling stage was well correlated to the condition as an adult, and pairs in which the male parent was in poor condition produced chicks in poor condition. Since the breeding success of a pair depended more on the condition of the male, females appear less affected by conditions early in life. Parents with poor provisioning capacity appear to bias offspring survival towards females, and a difference in the early susceptibility may be adaptive. </p><p>Changes in birth sex ratios have in some cases been suspected to result from exposure to estrogenic environmental pollutants. This was examined by exposing great- and blue tit embryos to a synthetic estrogen. Although there was a difference in the mortality rate, the difference was present also in the control groups, why this could not be attributed to estrogen exposure.</p>

January 2003 (has links)
Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the ingestion of meal and pelleted diets on eggshell porosity and thickness, water loss and hatchability percentages of partridge (Rhynchotus rufescens) eggs. / Mestre

Impact of the age on early embryonic mortality (EEM) and embryo quality in the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.)Al-Lawati, Hassan 09 December 2009 (has links)
This study on the honey bee, Apis mellifera, consists of three major parts. The first involves the characteristics of the spermathecal content of old and young honey bee queen. The second examines maternal age effects on embryonic mortality and juvenile development of offspring in the honey bee. The third investigates on the impact of semen age on early embryonic mortality, embryo quality and larvae development in the honey bee. Semen collected from the spermatheca of old queen bees show different sperm movement patterns and slower speed than sperm from the spermathecae of young queens. This ability is possibly related to different enzyme activities and metabolisms found in the spermathecal contents of differently aged queens. The embryonic development and larval growth rate have been examined with regard to queen honey bees of different ages (2-year-old to freshly mated queens) during two years (2005 and 2006). Early embryonic mortality “EEM” has been found to be higher within the eggs from old queens than in those from younger queens. Egg volume, consequently embryo size, reduces as queen’s age. A further investigates embryonic mortality in offspring originating from older semen. This has been carried out by extracting the semen from the spermatheca of an old or/and young mated queen and re-inseminating it into a virgin queen, in order to adjust for queen age. The investigation show higher embryonic mortality in the offspring from virgin queens inseminated with semen extracted from older queens than with semen from younger queens. The relative percentage of early and late embryonic mortality within the groups was different between queens re-inseminated with aged semen. High embryonic mortality in the control semen ages may be affected by the method of extracting from semen out of the spermatheca and re-inseminating it into a virgin queen. Empty egg phenomenon, which has been found in both groups, may be related to this technique

Currently, in France and the United States of America, only 30-35 % of first artificial inseminations in Holstein cows result in a calving. Pregnancy failure mainly occurs during embryonic development (fertilization failure - early embryonic mortality (FF-EEM) between D0 and D16 or late embryonic mortality (LEM) between D16 and D45 after insemination). Early pregnancy failure explains the majority of the differences in fertility between the Holstein breed and the other breeds in France, which are more fertile. There are numerous risk factors which cause pregnancy failure: animal, environmental and farm management factors. There are however, three factors which have been modified over time in Holstein cows: genetic merit, abnormal patterns of resumption of cyclicity and negative postpartum energy balance (NEB). Our objective was to identify the relationships between these three factors and early pregnancy failure after first postpartum insemination in Holstein dairy cows. Genetic merit was related to the incidence of FF-EEM and LEM. Prolonged luteal phases seemed to increase the incidence of LEM. The NEB was associated with FF-EEM and LEM. The impact of NEB on oocyte quality during the breeding period remains unclear. Our early pregnancy failure studies have helped to provide some tools to improve farm management.

This thesis includes a review and two papers. The first chapter is a review about general
principles of teratology and epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical signs and pathology of
malformations in small ruminants. The second chapter is a paper that studied the
teratogenicity of Mimosa tenuiflora. Fifteen sheep, divided into two groups, were introduced into an area invaded by the plant. Group 1 consisted of six pregnant ewes that were introduced into the experimental area 20 days after mating. Group 2 consisted of nine non pregnant sheep and a ram introduced into the area at the start of the experiment. Every 15 days each sheep was examined by ultrasound to control pregnancy. In Group 1, three sheep aborted single fetuses without malformations. One sheep delivered two lambs, one with hyperflexion of the proximal inter-phalangeal joint of the right forelimb and another without malformations. Another sheep delivered a lamb with a hyperflexion of both hindlimbs in the region of the tarsal-metatarsal joint. Only one sheep delivered a normal lamb. In Group 2, one sheep aborted a fetus without malformations and five delivered normal lambs. Three sheep of this group returned to estrus repeatedly and did not get pregnant during the mating period, suggesting embryonic loss. It is concluded that M. tenuiflora cause malformations, embryonic mortality and abortion in sheep. In the third chapter, the paper relates a case of lissencephaly and cerebellar hypoplasia in a goat. The goat presented sternal recumbence, absent menace response, intention tremors, ataxia, and nystagmus. It was euthanized and necropsied after been hospitalized during eleven days. At necropsy, the surface of the brain was smooth, cerebral sulci and gyri were absent, and the cerebellum was reduced in size. Histologically, in all cerebral cortex, the grey matter was thicker and the white matter was thinner than normal. The neurons were arranged randomly in the grey matter. In the cerebellum, the layers were disorganized and there was heterotopy of the cells. The histologic and gross lesions are characteristic of lissencephaly associated with cerebellar hypoplasia. Lissencephaly is a rare disease in veterinary medicine and had not been reported previously in goats.
