The Impact of Course Format on Performance in Intermediate Algebra: Exploring Potential Moderating Effects of Student Background Characteristics

Pitcher, Andrew 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Students have often struggled in developmental math courses. Educators and policymakers have engaged in efforts to improve student learning and pass rates in these courses. One instructional model that has shown promise in improving student outcomes is the Emporium Model. The traditional lecture model of teaching is still the predominant model in practice. Research has found that student background characteristics are important factors in predicting success in developmental math. Some studies have been done investigating the comparative effectiveness of the Traditional and Emporium models, but little research has been performed in whether the effect of course format on student outcomes vary based on student background characteristics. This ex post facto study aimed to fill this gap in the knowledge base by comparing student performance in intermediate algebra based on course format after controlling for High School GPA, college entrance exam scores, gender, and ethnicity. The study further investigated the moderating effects of High School GPA, college entrance exam scores, gender, and ethnicity on course format in impacting student grades. The sample consisted of students who took intermediate algebra between the fall 2015 and fall 2019 semesters at a mid-sized private university on the West Coast of the United States. A series of sequential multiple regressions were performed to investigate the research questions. There was insufficient evidence to suggest that course format was a significant predictor of student grades after controlling for the other variables. No moderating effects for any of the investigated variables were detected. This suggests colleges and universities may wish to offer courses in multiple formats to give students and faculty a choice in how to take or teach a developmental math course. Care should be taken to not generalize the results of this study too broadly. The many ethnicity categories limited the power of this study to detect potential differences in student performance between the Emporium and Traditional models. Further studies should be performed investigating comparisons between the Traditional model and other instructional formats. Studies investigating potential moderating effects of student affective characteristics including math anxiety levels, goal achievement orientation, and confidence levels on course format could provide valuable insights to this issue.

Gamarra Cahuantico, Lourdes Fabiola, Vera Paredes, Danny Marcelo 21 August 2020 (has links)
This article proposes a solution for small shops and businesses in the cities that work in the textile sector, which are supplied with products by traveling to Lima to buy wholesale at different wholesale points. And those who present the problem of supplying their stock, more now in the context of Covid-19. In this way, our first focus will be Gamarra. What is proposed is that through a mobile digital platform, these businesses make their purchases with the same normality as always, without leaving their business, saving time and money and now also ensuring their safety and health. The project was born as an E-commerce idea before the pandemic and becomes more consistent at this juncture, also introducing this public to technology and the new normal that Covid-19 leaves us, it is a fact that was anticipated. At first, a qualitative research is presented through in-depth interviews with merchants in the province and from there the data is collected that shows us that there is a potential market for our platform, this is supported by quantitative research carried out through the method survey, to a group of businesses and entrepreneurs with the similar profile of the public we are addressing. Thus, we present the application and its attributes in this Business Plan.

Rojas Robles, Carla Valeria 10 July 2020 (has links)
Currently, the Gamarra commercial emporium is a conglomerate of companies specialized in the preparation, production and marketing of textiles. Most of these businesses are growing, however, not all brands work in depth on essential elements such as quality of service and brand image, so several are not positioned in the market. With that said, there are five determinants of quality of service established by SERVQUAL, an instrument that allows quantifying the quality of service. These are: trust or empathy, reliability, responsibility, responsiveness, and tangibility. However, in this work we will work with a unique research model where only Reliability and Tangibility will be taken into account; and it will be analyzed if there is a direct relationship with the positioning of each brand. The results that were evaluated from doing this SERVQUAL study were analyzed through a variety of tests, including paired-sample t-tests and multivariate regression analyses. Ultimately, the results indicate that a number of sub-questions that make up both independent variables, fiabilidad and tangibilidad, have a positive relationship at varying levels of strength with the positioning of each of the stores. This investigation therefore provides an overview of the essential variables stores should focus on to improve their Brand positioning in Gamarra.

Ávila Hurtado, Yanet, López Duran, Fabiola 15 September 2019 (has links)
The objective of this research is to determine the Internal Inventory Control based on the COSO ERM model and develop procedures to improve the profitability of the MYPES Knitted fabric manufacturing companies at the Gamarra Commercial Emporium, year 2018. MYPEs are an important element in the national economy as they represent 99% of the companies on the country, and 93.5% of the textile-clothing MYPEs are concentrated on the Gamarra area, there 27.7% are dedicated to textile products manufacturing. This industry represents an important part of the manufacturing production, reaching up to 8.9% of the GDP. There area also factors that limit their business development, such as a lack of financing, lack of government support, infrastructure problems on their warehouses and their poor knowledge of the internal inventory control, all of which have caused them to be seriously affected after the increased competition of imported textile products on the sector in recent years. The study focus was mixed, we began with interviews of businesses owners who know about their business development in order to validate the main factors. Then, 30 MYPEs surveys, of the knitted textile sector operating within Gamarra, were carried out. The obtained results bring us to the conclusion that the related factors to the decision to incorporate an adequate internal inventory control based on the COSO ERM model significantly influence the profitability of the textile knitting companies in Gamarra, and its proper application will allow them to stand out in the good management of their inventories. / Tesis

Improving Student Learning in Undergraduate Mathematics

Rejniak, Gabrielle 01 January 2012 (has links)
The goal of this study was to investigate ways of improving student learning, par- ticularly conceptual understanding, in undergraduate mathematics courses. This study focused on two areas: course design and animation. The methods of study were the following: Assessing the improvement of student conceptual understanding as a result of team project-based learning, individual inquiry-based learning and the modi ed empo- rium model; and Assessing the impact of animated videos on student learning with the emphasis on concepts. For the first part of our study (impact of course design on student conceptual understanding) we began by comparing the following three groups in Fall 2010 and Fall 2011: 1. Fall 2010: MAC 1140 Traditional Lecture & Fall 2011: MAC 1140 Modi ed Empo- rium 2. Fall 2010: MAC 1140H with Project & Fall 2011: MAC 1140H no Project 3. Fall 2010: MAC 2147 with Projects & Fall 2011: MAC 2147 no Projects Analysis of pre-tests and post-tests show that all three courses showed statistically signifi cant increases, according to their respective sample sizes, during Fall 2010. However, in Fall 2011 only MAC 2147 continued to show a statistically signifi cant increase. Therefore in Fall 2010, project-based learning - both in-class individual projects and out-of-class team projects - conclusively impacted the students' conceptual understanding. Whereas, in Fall 2011, the data for the Modifi ed Emporium model had no statistical signifi cance and is therefore inconclusive as to its effectiveness. In addition the diff erence in percent of increase for MAC 1140 between Fall 2010 - traditional lecture model - and Fall 2011 - modi fied emporium model - is not statistically signi ficant and we cannot say that either model is a better delivery mode for conceptual learning. For the second part of our study, the students enrolled in MAC 1140H Fall 2011 and MAC 2147 Fall 2011 were given a pre-test on sequences and series before showing them an animated video related to the topic. After watching the video, students were then given the same 7 question post test to determine any improvement in the students' understanding of the topic. After two weeks of teacher-led instruction, the students took the same post-test again. The results of this preliminary study indicate that animated videos do impact the conceptual understanding of students when used as an introduction into a new concept. Both courses that were shown the video had statistically signifi cant increases in the conceptual understanding of the students between the pre-test and the post-animation test.

La femvertising como constructor de la igualdad de género a través del efecto de la tercera persona en las mujeres del emporio de Gamarra / Femvertising as a builder of gender equality through the third person effect on women in the Gamarra emporium

Ruiz Sánchez, Katherine Lesly 26 November 2019 (has links)
This study analyzes femvertising, the recent advertising strategy that issues messages of empowerment to women and gender equality, and its relationship with the third-person effect, which indicates that people tend to perceive others (they) as more influenced by the media than themselves (me). It is a qualitative study whose design is the case study, where the BCP campaign was analyzed: "#NoMeDigasFelizDía" launched on International Women's Day (2019). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 women workers from the Gamarra emporium from 25 to 52 years. As a result, femvertising manages to build gender equality in the women of the commercial empire of Gamarra through the messages exposed in their advertisements, which show gender inequalities and forms of empowerment of women, eliminating the typical stereotypes of women but that is not necessarily given by the third-person effect. / Tesis
