Architecture possesses the potential to elevate one’s intellectual and visceral perceptions from unconscious passings to informed events. The quest for creating events involves an intermediary which promotes the transition from a casual involvement to an active engagement. This intermediary role is that of the experience. By imposing a presence, or creating a sense of place, architecture awakens the mind and stirs the soul. Doing this, the architecture is raised to a higher order, revealing a significance that is true, as something more, not as something else. The making of events through the experience fulfills the aspirations of architecture to unearth the events that dwell in the interaction between place and occasion. / Master of Architecture

First-Year Students' Reasons for Withdrawing From College

Retention of first-year students was a problem at a private 4-year university in the Southeastern United States. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the reasons entering first-year students who were part of the Promise Program withdrew from the university during their first year. Tinto's model of student attrition provided the conceptual framework for the study. Research questions addressed students' rationale for selecting the school, their perspectives on the main causes of first-year attrition, their expectations of campus support services, and their recommendations for how to decrease student attrition. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 7 students from the spring 2016 and fall 2016 semesters. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using manual coding and coding software. Findings indicated that students' sense of belonging was the most influential factor in their decision to withdraw from college. Recommendations included a training program for administrators and staff on customer service techniques. This study can bring positive social change to the profession by seeking out systemic changes to promote entering freshmen's college completion. Conclusively, the implications of positive social change is most benefical to students when more students are able to earn a degree, and better their livelihood. The university would benefit by graduating more students and the success of their college graduates could be seen as their own success of addressing student's social and academic needs. Finally, the positive social change for externalities would benefit from the investment in human beings and human capital as a critical input for change and innovations to society.

Supplying the Latino Way : A study of the Mexican automotive industry

Problem- Sweden is for the moment one of the countries in the world that is most dependent on the automotive industry. Significant companies within this industry at a global level move parts of, or entire operations abroad which increase the competition for Swedish companies. This fact conveys problem for the Swedish SMEs suppliers, as if a supplier only focus on the national market will not match the requirements from the OEMs such as integrated product development and delivery of complete systems on a JIT- basis. Considering these fact, SME suppliers in Sweden need to look for new opportunities on new markets, and create an understanding for how to act accordingly to the new market’s particular business conditions. Purpose- The main purpose of this thesis is to examine business conditions and prerequisites that applies for the buyers and the suppliers in the supply chain in the Mexican auto-motive industry, and further to develop an understanding of the logic of the interaction and integration between them. Derived from the obtained knowledge, a sub-purpose of this thesis is to present recommendations for how Swedish suppliers should enter and act accordingly on the new market. Method- In this thesis we have applied a case study method. We have conducted semi-structured interviews with four of the largest OEMs and five suppliers, all of whom have production in Mexico. We have in addition to the interviews with OEMs and suppliers supported the collected information with one interview with a representative of a trade association within the Mexican automotive industry and one representative from a governmental institution. Results- Our analysis indicates that the conditions for Swedish automotive suppliers to enter the Mexican market are favorable. Factors such as Free Trade Agreements, the positive attitude towards Foreign Direct Investments and skilled but low labor costs all imply for opportunities for Swedish suppliers. Secondly, our analysis indicates that the OEMs are today doing supply base rationalizations. We consider that this is based on the fact that the OEMs are changing their ordering basis from purchasing single parts to complete systems in order to reduce costs and increase the efficiency. Thirdly, our analysis indicates that it is the buyer, no matter on what level in the supply chain it is acting, who forms the strategy of its suppliers. If the buyer has a lean approach, its suppliers are forced to use the same thinking and apply it to their suppliers in order to meet the pressures on costs reductions, product development and JIT delivery. This we entitle as a continues correlation, which permeate in the complete supply chain.

This study investigated problems experienced by women re-entering into the education profession by focusing on: • The nature and scope of re-entry by women into the education profession; • the features and problems experienced by women on re-entering the education profession; • the problems women educators experience on re-entering the education profession in the North West Province. To achieve these goals, both an empirical survey and a survey of literature was conducted. The study of literature was undertaken consulting primary and secondary sources. After the problems experienced by women re-entering into the education profession were established and discussed, a questionnaire was drafted. From the review of literature, it appeared that the problems experienced by women (i.e. re-entry women) were problems within themselves, in the career and society, as well as problems in the work situation and on management level. A systematic sample was used in which women educators of secondary schools in the North West Province were involved. The empirical investigation indicated that women educators have problems when they re-enter the education profession after a period of absence and that certain problems should be addressed. Problems of high priority are related to the category of problems within women. The categories of problems within the career and the society were indicated as problems of high priority. A problem of low priority for women educators appears to be the role of family caregiver for elderly, sick or disabled relatives who live either in the educator's home or nearby. Also, the age of re-entry women seems to be no problem for re-entry women educators. Certain recommendations are made on the basis of the empirical investigation. The most important recommendations are the provision of childcare facilities such as after-school care, holiday play-schemes, workplace nurseries and an increase in maternity benefits, and the introduction of paternity and childcare leave. The creation of promotion opportunities for women who aspire to educational management positions is also an important recommendation. The business organization around cocoa is developing, taking into consideration, the strategy of economic development deployed by the country, its image as the fifth producer of the world and the opportunity for Cameroon to answer the market increasing demand. We have developed in this paper the business organization around cocoa in Cameroon, the implication for people and administration, its potentialities in term of development and the rules to know when entering cocoa business in Cameroon. When we undertook to work on this topic for the master thesis, it was to connect both 'our project of developing cocoa business in Cameroon' and 'the analysis of local cocoa market and its connections to the international market'. Many sources of data have been analyzed including the information collected through the Internet, the Ministry of Agriculture in Cameroon, the Ministry of Trade, the provincial delegation of agriculture of Centre, cocoa buyers’ information such as Telcar, Sic-Cacao and the Cocoa Development Corporation with is the State corporate, developing cocoa seeds and training farmers. After reviewed the literature and meeting with people, we undertook the analysis of cocoa business organization. Interestingly, the results revealed the implication of local government and the effort they are putting together to reach their objective of positioning Cameroon by 2022 as the second producer of cocoa beans with more than 600.000 tons a year. Reaching such objective means develop business opportunities in term of production, increase export capacity to capture more value and develop local pre-transforming units.

What it is that skilled young adults seek in their workplace

Problem- An increasingly globalized world is a cause for highly competitive job markets, making the attraction and retention of young talents increasingly important (Wallace et al., 2014). Additionally, current studies have not been able to successfully frame possible needs and wishes of this cohort towards their future workplaces (Deal et al., 2010). Aim- Therefore, this study aims to contribute to the understanding of what these young talents, seek for from a workplace. Method- This study applies a qualitative, and inductive approach, to explore and simultaneously allow new in-depth insights into the study area. Therefore, 13 fictive stories were collected from current, and former students in Sweden. The fictive stories were used to ease the participants into the distancing of themselves from current social structures, and to express their actual needs and wants. Findings- With the findings five major dimensions could be identified, that concerns the study group when picturing a desirable workplace: Workplace structure &amp; dynamics, Validation &amp; acknowledgment, Acceptance and Freedom, Private &amp; Work life balance, and Personal growth and the future. These dimensions further split into issues and seeking’s that concern equality and flat leader style, as well as an inhibited insecurity and the wish for support and acceptance. Limitations- This research is, as all qualitative studies greatly dependent on the researchers’ interpretation of the underlying material. Also, other factors as for example national culture could have possible effects on the outcomes of this study, however efforts were made to discuss the potential influences. Contribution- With the five dimension that were identified in our study, new knowledge on what it is that attracts and motivates young adults in Sweden to a certain company, could be collected. This knowledge might benefit businesses that regard these, when reaching out for new labor force. Also, further studies can be built upon this research, as for example an inductive testing on the applicability in other contexts, or generalizability of the model.
