Multi-diagnostic Investigations of the Equatorial and Low-latitude Ionospheric Electrodynamics and Their Impacts on Space-based Technologies

Khadka, Sovit M. January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Prof. Michael J. Naughton / Thesis advisor: Dr. Cesar E. Valladares / The equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere of the Earth exhibits unique features on its structuring, coupling, and electrodynamics that offer the possibility to forecast the dynamics and fluctuations of ionospheric plasma densities at later times. The scientific understanding and forecasting of ionospheric plasma are necessary for several practical applications, such as for mitigating the adverse effects of space weather on communication, navigation, power grids, space mission, and for various scientific experiments and applications. The daytime equatorial electrojet (EEJ), equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), as well as nighttime equatorial plasma bubble (EPB) and plasma blobs are the most prominent low-latitude ionospheric phenomena. This dissertation focuses on the multi-diagnostic study of the mechanism, properties, abnormalities, and interrelationships of these phenomena to provide significant contributions to space weather communities from the ground- and space-based measurements. A strong longitudinal, seasonal, day-to-day variability and dependency between EEJ, ExB vertical plasma drift, and total electron content (TEC) in the EIA distribution are seen in the equatorial and low-latitude region. In general, the EEJ strength is stronger in the west coast of South America than in its east coast. The variability of the EEJ in the dayside ionosphere significantly affects the ionospheric electron density variation, dynamics of the peak height of F2-layer, and TEC distributions as the EEJ influences the vertical transport mechanism of the ionospheric plasma. The eastward electric field (EEF) and the neutral wind play a decisive role in controlling the actual configuration of the EIA. The trans-equatorial neutral wind profile calculated using data from the Second-generation, Optimized, Fabry-Perot Doppler Imager (SOFDI) located near the geomagnetic equator and a physics-based numerical model, LLIONS (Low-Latitude IONospheric Sector) give new perspectives on the effects of daytime meridional neutral winds on the consequent evolution of the asymmetry of the equatorial TEC anomalies during the afternoon onwards. The spatial configurations including the strength, shape, amplitude and latitudinal extension of the EIA crests are affected by the EEF associated with the EEJ under undisturbed conditions, whereas the meridional neutral winds play a significant role in the development of their asymmetric structure in the low-latitude ionosphere. Additionally, the SWARM satellite constellation and the ground-based LISN (Low-Latitude Ionospheric Sensor Network) data allow us to resolve the space-time ambiguity of past single-satellite studies and detect the drastic changes that EPBs and plasma blobs undergo on a short time scale. The coordinated quantitative analysis of a plasma density observation shows evidence of the association of plasma blobs with EPBs via an appropriate geomagnetic flux tube. Plasma blobs were initially associated with the EPBs and remained at the equatorial latitude right above the EPBs height, but later were pushed away from geomagnetic equator towards EIA latitudes by the EPB/ depleted flux tubes that grew in volume. Further, there exists a strong correlation between the noontime equatorial electrojet and the GPS-derived TEC distributions during the afternoon time period, caused by vertical E × B drift via the fountain effect. Nevertheless, only a minor correlation likely exists between the peak EEJ and the net postsunset ionospheric scintillation index (S4) greater than 0.2. This study not only searches for a mutual relationship between the midday, afternoon and nighttime ionospheric phenomena but also aims at providing a possible route to improve our space weather forecasting capability by predicting nighttime ionospheric irregularities based on midday measurements at the equatorial and low latitudes. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. The family is a mutable organism which transform and is transformed by the society. By the adoption of determined rules and concepts it opens space to social changes. The contemporary family has crossed over deep modifications caused by, over all, factors suc. as: the woman professional insertion, the world-wide mass media, the complexity of intergerational relationship due to nuclear family weakness, the increasing number of divorces and remarriages. At the side this, in the last thirty years, there was a significant growing of medium life brazilian population. The medical area progress and the arrising of new technologies made possible a human being progressive longevity increasing, and grows up, at every day, the number of persons that live over hundred years. From this growth, become more actuals the quuestions concerning to the familiar relationship among persons of different generations and cultures. The fact of the persons had a greater life perspective not make different the familiar relationship, but make bigger the complexity of such relationship, since the number of interacting persons is increasing. Each more time the grandfathers are having a more active participation in the family and society. Not ever the family succeed in satisfactorily to solve their conflicts. It needs the institutions help to guide the children education. Among these, there is the Escola de Pais do Brasil(EPB) which during forty nine years has contributed to improve the parents intergenerational relationship that have followed its courses of study. This thesis (MA) examines the contemporary family intergerational relationship and analyse the EPB evolution thinking. To achieve the proposed objective , it was used the bibliographic and documental methods. The bibliographic research had as purpose the survey of academic and cultural contributions over the subject. It was done a concerning literature revision, which helped to delimit and define the work aim. By analysing the EPB historical documents, such as minutes, newspapers, congress annals and others, it was possible to obtain sufficient data to understanding its history, to explain its objectives and to show the EPB thinking evolution over the intergenerational relationship in the contemporary families.

The post-graduation study of brazilian problems UERJ: a sociological reflection on a project of political socialization in Brazil

Samara Lima Tavares Mancebo Lerner 28 February 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze the process of construction and deconstruction of a post-graduation course in Brazilian Problems Studies (EPB) deployed at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) in the mid 1970s, which aimed to the political socialization of the young in the military regime. This University was a pioneer regarding the development of Specialization and Masters courses in EPB, which survived until the early years of the democratic regime of the 1980s. In this thesis, it is argued that the post-graduation course in EPB at the UERJ expressed the replication of a Masters course in EPB created at the Superior School of War (ESG), which had the National Security Doctrine as its foundation, in order to guarantee the reproduction of military regime ideology over the university/educational fields. To understand this process of so-called replication, and its respective interests, it was necessary to clarify the relations of cooperation between the authorities of the ESG and of the UERJ from the 1960s on, and the very conditions concerning the possibility that the UERJ, and not another university, has been chosen for the establishment of these relations and the development of this unique experience of a stricto sensu post-graduation course in EPB in Brazil. This thesis is sustained by the analysis of primary sources regarding the Specialization and Masters courses in EPB at the UERJ and the courses developed by the ESG in the early 1970s. Secondary sources were also important to trace the history of the UERJ, the military regime, and the Brazilian Problems Studies in the country. The timeframe of this study comprises about two decades, from the late 1960s, when the civil-military relations between the UERJ and the ESG began, until the late 1980s, when the Specialization and Masters courses in EPB at the UERJ were extinct.
