Entendemos, assim, as duas obras como representações do sistema escravagista e da vida do escravo, no caso, especificamente, de Northup, servindo como mediadoras do trauma cultural na sociedade norte-americana e influenciando a forma como a identidade do afro-americano é construída. Pretendemos estudar o gênero narrativas de escravos, contextualizando a autobiografia de Northup, com o intuito de analisá-la especificamente. Utilizaremos, então, autores como Olney (1984), Lingold (2013), Pope (2014), Roy (2015), entre outros. Faremos, doravante, um exame sobre filmes comerciais com o tema escravidão, com o intuito de apontar como cada um deles dialoga com a sociedade na época de sua produção, tornando-se contradiscursos ao pensamento vigente. Basearemo-nos em Sklar (1978), Kellner (2001), Mascarello (2006) e Rosenstone (2015). Passaremos à análise do filme de McQueen, procurando indícios de uma nova abordagem do tema escravidão no cinema, apontando, também, como, em diversos momentos, livro e filme se relacionam, seja na semelhança ou na diferença. A seguir, propomos uma reflexão sobre como as duas obras influenciaram e influenciam a construção da identidade do afro-americano, levando em consideração o trauma cultural legado pelo sistema escravagista na sociedade estadunidense. Apoiaremo-nos... / Abstract: This research aims to reflect on 12 Years a Slave, regarding two media: the Solomon Northup novel (1853) and the Steve McQueen film adaptation (2013). Therefore, the two works are considered as representations of the slavery system and slave life, in Northup's case, specifically, serving as cultural trauma mediators in the North-American society and influencing the way African-American identity is built. We intend to study the slave narrative genre, contextualizing Northup's autobiography, aiming to analyze it specifically. We will draw on authors such as Olney (1984), Lingold (2013), Pope (2014), Roy (2015), and others. Henceforth, we will examine commercial, slavery-themed movies, with the goal of pointing out how each of them dialogs with the society at the time of its production, becoming counter-discourses to the valid thinking then. We will be supported by Sklar (1978), Kellner (2001), Mascarello (2006), and Rosenstone (2015). We will carry on to the analysis of McQueen's movie, searching for indications of a new approach to the slavery theme in film, also pointing out how, in several moments, the novel and the movie relate to each other, whether in similarities or differences. After, we propose a reflection on how the two works have influenced the African-American identity construction, taking into consideration the cultural trauma left by the slavery system in the American society. Resumo: As diretrizes ilustradas perseguidas pelo Estado português durante parte do reinado de D. José I (1750-1777) deram início a reformas que tiveram como um de seus resultados a mudança na forma como vários grupos sociais eram concebidos. Categorias sociais tradicionalmente estigmatizadas foram elevadas à condição de vassalos habilitados. Neste contexto foi decretado o alvará de 16 de janeiro de 1773, o qual previa, por um lado, o fim gradual da escravidão negra em Portugal e, por outro, a extinção da categoria de libertos. Esta dissertação versa sobre o impacto político e social desta lei na América portuguesa no que diz respeito aos anseios de negros e pardos, escravos e livres. A documentação que dá suporte à pesquisa constitui-se principalmente de requerimentos, cartas e representações enviadas à apreciação régia durante a segunda metade do século XVIII e primeiros anos do XIX. Nela encontram-se discursos arquitetados em prol das aspirações desses sujeitos, bem como pareceres emitidos pelas autoridades coloniais e metropolitanas, nos quais se buscou identificar os argumentos legais, filosóficos e morais empregados. Nestes registros observouse que as demandas tinham como foco a mudança de status social, fosse, no caso dos escravos, para a condição de libertos, fosse buscando o reconhecimento da diferenciação social por pardos e negros livres e libertos.

Se comparado ao eixo Rio-São Paulo a quantidade de cativos existentes na cidade e seus arredores era ínfima, mas foi esse quantitativo que possibilitou a expansão da lavoura cacaueira. Africanos e afro-brasileiros escravizados vivenciaram também as mesmas expectativas de liberdade, principalmente, quando o sistema escravista mostrava sinais de exaustão, muitos desses homens e mulheres foram a justiça reclamar o direito de liberdade, e não raro foram os casos em que conseguiram sensibilizar as autoridades. Quando a abolição foi decretada nem todos os libertos debandaram das fazendas, a depender do contexto em que viviam procuraram reafirmar novas condições de trabalho, de vida e inserção social / Abstract: In this thesis we tried to analyze the relationships between masters and slaves during the last years of slavery and the years following the abolition of the slave element in the County of Islanders. When compared to the Rio-Sao Paulo the number of captives in the city and its environs was insignificant, but it was possible the quantitative expansion of the cocoa crop. African-Brazilians and african slaves also have experienced the same expectations of freedom, especially when the slave system was showing signs of exhaustion, many of these men and women have claimed for justice and the right to experience the freedom. Very frequently they have got success in justice processes by having sympathy of authorities. Meu principal objetivo é compreender o pensamento dos indivíduos que, ao formularem seus testamentos, concediam a seus escravos a promessa de liberdade. Tendo por base os testamentos, pude verificar, pela análise da partilha dos bens e das doações ali anotadas, a política senhorial de manutenção da propriedade, as motivações e as estratégias que os senhores utilizavam para garantir a continuidade de seu poder sobre os herdeiros e os futuros libertos, bem como compreender a própria alforria no interior do universo da concessão de dádivas. A partir dessas premissas e da análise da documentação, reconstituí os perfis dos senhores de escravos que libertam escravos em testamento; verifiquei as modalidades de alforria que concediam; busquei compreender como eles pensavam seu próprio poder e averiguei as suas reações diante as mudanças que estavam ocorrendo na sociedade. Além disso, desenvolvi uma reflexão sobre as diversas abordagens existentes na bibliografia sobre os mecanismos sociais e simbólicos envolvidos nos atos de doação, considerando o conceito do "dom". / Abstract: The presented work aimed to study the slave master's conceptions about freedom within the years 1855 and 1871, as well a period of time in which there was a increase of debates about the liberty of the slaves - focusing the ascendant Campinas city. My main purpose was to understand the mind who promised freedom to their slaves and simutaneously had been formuling their own will. I have based my research on these documents, in which I could investigate them closely - analysing the way how properties and donations were divided and written down on these papers, the logic of the masters on maintenance of their wealth at the same time, as well what stimulated them and their strategies for guarantying of power - even after the death - over their heirs and the potential free people who have been slaving by them before. Thus, I have tried to understand the slave's freedom in this kind of giver mindedness. Hence, it is possible to construct the master profile who free their slaves in a deed and the categories of liberties granted, as well to go into a matter how they saw the power of themselves and which reactions had been happening on society on their days.
