Ethnic Identity and Sense of Belonging : The Case Study of Ethnic Construction and Sense of Belonging of Macedonian Diaspora in Australia

Tahu Janakievska, Simona January 2022 (has links)
This paper aims to gain an in-depth understanding of construction of ethnic identity and feeling ofbelonging through a case study on Macedonian diaspora in Australia. It examines the aspects whichinfluenced the construction of their (ethnic) identity and what kind of impact the migration processhad on their feeling of belonging. For that purpose, a qualitative research method was chosenconsisting of 9 semi-structured interviews with members of the Macedonian diaspora who havelived in Australia for more than 20 years. The result shows that the decisive factors in determiningtheir ethnic identity was the language, the Macedonian as well as Australian culture and the linkageto their homeland. In addition, although they showed that they have adopted Australian culture butalso kept their Macedonian culture, the psychological condition, memories, place attachment andfamily seemed to be essential for the prevalence of Macedonian ethnic identity and feeling ofbelonging.

Adult Attachment, Racial-Ethnic Identity, Racial-Ethnic Socialization, and Subjective Wellbeing

Toyama, Shiho 07 1900 (has links)
The current study aimed to explore the direct effect of insecure adult attachment on subjective wellbeing and its indirect effect via racial-ethnic identity. Additionally, the present study examined the extent to which racial-ethnic socialization practices may moderate adult attachment and racial-ethnic identity link. The final sample included 213 emerging adults (M = 20.94; SD = 2.96) with diverse racial-ethnic backgrounds. PROCESS Model 4 and 1 were used to examine the direct and indirect effect of insecure attachment on subjective wellbeing via racial-ethnic identity variables and the interaction effect between insecure attachment and racial-ethnic socialization on racial-ethnic identity variables. Results indicated the direct effect of insecure attachment on subjective wellbeing but did not support hypotheses for the indirect effect of insecure attachment on subjective wellbeing via the racial-ethnic identity variables. Additionally, results indicated that overt socialization buffered the negative impact of attachment avoidance on racial-ethnic identity exploration. Furthermore, racial-ethnic identity variables and subjective wellbeing significantly differed across racial-ethnic groups and socioeconomic statuses. Findings provide insight on the distinct concepts of attachment and racial-ethnic identity as they highlight inter- and intra-personal components, respectively. Mental health professionals may utilize overt socialization to help clients develop a sense of purpose and meaning related to their identity. Limitations, future research directions, and counseling implications are discussed.

Latino\a Ethnic Identity in the New Diaspora: Perspectives of a Select Group of Latino\a Undergraduates at a Predominantly White Land Grant University

Larroy, Edwin A. 07 July 2005 (has links)
The increasing presence of "Latinos" in higher education presents a challenge to the academy, particularly in understanding their adjustment to the college environment (Umana-Taylor, Diversi & Fine, 2002). This study investigates how ethnically diverse "Latino\a" undergraduates construct and affirm ethnic identity. The findings suggest that a "Latino\a" pan-ethnicity is problematic because of the diversity of national origins, family histories, linguistic preferences, and cultural traditions that exists among the different nationalities that comprise this ethnic group. Unlike previous generations of immigrants, new diaspora "Latinos" seek integration into American society as bilinguals with linguistic command for both Spanish and English and resist abandonment of national identities and culture. These are suggestive of transnational identities that are multiple and adaptive to a variety of contexts and situations; rather than being fixed and constant. / Ph. D.

Challenging Mental Health Concerns among Black Caribbean Immigrants

Venner, Heather Angela 26 October 2015 (has links)
The racial and ethnic diversity of the United States continues to evolve due to increases in immigration from nearly all parts of the globe, including the Caribbean region. Like the U.S., this region can also be considered a melting pot of cultures, with the Afro-Caribbean population widely scattered across these island nations. Important to this investigation is the large diaspora population of Black Caribbean immigrants (BCs) in the U.S. who are often viewed as African American simply by virtue of their skin tone and facial features. As such, this racial consolidation does not take into account their distinct history, immigrant experiences, and cultural 'separateness,' particularly with respect to mental health counseling. Current research is limited as to how the racial and ethnic identities of various generations of Black Caribbean immigrants in the U.S have shaped their experiences—and especially how racism in American may be impacting their lives. Moreover, their already limited experience with the counseling process may be undermined by culturally-inappropriate services that do not consider their distinct cultural beliefs and needs. Guided by known and respected clinical standards for multicultural counseling and training for culturally-competent counseling, this qualitative study explored the counseling experiences of eight English-speaking BCs. Themes related to if and how mental health clinicians are actually addressing their racial distinctiveness, ethnic identity, and immigrant experiences were highlighted. Implications for counselors, counselor educators, and Black Caribbean immigrants were summarized. / Ph. D.

The Role of Language in Identity and Mediating Connection for Fijian College Students

Tora, Grace Taito 11 July 2024 (has links) (PDF)
This study explores the role of language in constructing identity and promoting belonging for seventeen Fijian college students at one U.S. based university in the Pacific Rim. Focus group interviews were analyzed for how students described the role that language played in constructing student identity and mediating connection. Analysis was grounded in post-structural perspectives of identity alongside vā – the Oceanic notion that encompasses identity and belonging. Students described themes of native language proficiency in reinforcing kinship relationships and in participating in cultural traditions and practices. They also expressed other ways of maintaining vā without proficiency in their native languages. Other students noted the affordances of speaking English to participating in global economies and global cultures, including schooling at the university. Implications highlight the need for educational policies, practices, and pedagogies that empower Fijian students to be successful in academic and public spaces, while helping them maintain connection to their ethnic communities and identities—to promote belonging, and to maintain their positions in the vā.

Mitochondrial DNA analysis of Nonosabasut, a Beothuk Indian chief

Reed, April May January 2001 (has links)
The purpose of this experiment was to examine changes in strength and power measures accompanying traditional and ballistic training during in-season competition. Fourteen collegiate women volleyball players were trained for 11 weeks with periodized traditional and ballistic resistance training. There was a 5% decrease (p<0.05) in approach jump and reach height during the traditional training period (pre to mid), and a 5% increase (p<0.05) during the ballistic training period (mid to post), but values were not different from pre to post. There were significant decreases (p<0.05) in contact time during drop jumps (15% mid to post) and minimum dip height in countermovement jumps (7% mid to post and 16% pre to post) during ballistic training. Traditional resistance training displayed significant decreases in speed related measures, while ballistic training displayed significant increases in these same variables. A combination of traditional and ballistic training can maintain jump height over the competitive season. / Department of Biology
