<p>This paper examines how pupils with a non-Swedish background, in a secondary school in Stockholm’s suburban, Sweden, interpret and absorb the contents of school-room classes. It also examines whether the interpretations are influenced by a power-relation between teacher and pupils. The pupil’s interpretations, including their values and perceptions as regards to the content, are central to our study.</p><p>Firstly, classes on world conflicts and corporal punishment for children were observed and these observations were the foundation to this study. Secondly, pupils with various ethnic backgrounds were interviewed regarding their experiences of the classes.</p><p>The analysis indicates the presence of a power-relation between teacher and pupils in class caused by the teacher showing no consideration to the pupils’ various backgrounds when selecting the contents of the presentation, resulting in a conscious or unconscious exclusion of the pupils’ backgrounds. The interviews indicate that the teacher’s cultural capital was in a superior position to the pupils’ cultural capital. This may lead to a sense of exclusion.</p><p>The pupils’ interpretation stem from both their own experience in a multi-cultural school and from their parents’ backgrounds. They are thus expressions of trans-cultural “new ethnicities” rather than one specific ethnicity.</p>

Personal and Institutional Factors: Relationship to Self-Efficacy of Persistence to the Senior Year in College among Self-Identified Black Undergraduate Students in a Hispanic Serving InstitutionFletcher, Sandra E 13 July 2012 (has links)
While undergraduate enrollment of all racial groups in United States higher education institutions has increased, 6-year graduation rates of Blacks (39%) remain low compared to other races; Asians (69%), Whites (62%), and Hispanics (50%; NCES, 2010). Women’s graduation rate is higher than men’s; 58% compared to men’s at 53% in public institutions (IPEDS, 2011). Retention literature does not address the perceptions of Black ethnic groups’ experiences in college, particularly in Hispanic serving institutions.
Informed by Tinto’s (1975, 1987, 1993) student academic and social integration model, Guiffrida’s (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006) model of relationships while at college, and ex-post facto research design, the study investigated personal and institutional factors that relate to Black students’ self-efficacy and persistence to the senior year in college.
Data about Black ethnic undergraduate seniors’ (N = 236) academic and social experiences in college were collected using the Student Institutional Integration Survey (SIIS), an online questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to collect background information about the sample, correlation was calculated to indicate the degree of relationship between the variables, and multiple linear regressions were used to identify variables that are predictors of self-efficacy of persistence. Independent samples t-test and analyses of variance were computed to determine whether differences in perceptions of personal and institutional factors that relate to self-efficacy of persistence to the senior year in college could be identified between gender and ethnicity.
Frequency was summarized to identify themes of participants’ primary motivation for finishing undergraduate degree programs. These themes were: (a) self-pride/personal goal, (b) professional aspiration/career (c) motivation to support family, (d) desire to have financial independence/better job, (e) to serve community, (f) opportunity to go to college, (g) being first-generation college student, and (h) prove to family the value of higher education.
The research findings support the tenets of academic and social integration theories which suggest that students’ interaction with peer and faculty, relationships with family and friends, and involvement in institutional activities and organizations influence their persistence in college.
Implications based on the findings affect institutional policy, curriculum, and program improvements that relate to Black undergraduate students’ academic and social support.

Denna undersökning är en analys av hur lärare på konkret didaktiskt sätt kan arbeta med invandrarfientlighet, men framförallt islamofobi i skolan. Resultatet av undersökningen kommer att visa att invandrarfientlighet fortfarande är ett stort problem i Sverige och att både media med internet i spetsen har en stor roll i förmedlandet av denna bild. I skolan är kunskapen om hur man arbetar med denna problematik väldigt bristfällig, speciellt när fokus ligger på islamofobi. Ett antal stiftelser och organisationer arbetar med att få fram mer utbildningsmaterial för lärare som ska förenkla arbetet med denna problematik. / This study is an analysis of how teachers in a concrete didactic way, can work with xenophobia, but especially Islamophobia in schools. The results of the study will show that xenophobia is still a big problem in Sweden and that both media with internet in the lead, has a major role in mediating this image. In schools, the knowledge of how to work with this problem is very poor, especially when the focus is on Islamophobia. A number of foundations and organizations are working to develop more educational materials for teachers that will simplify the way they can work with this problem.

Ethnic anti discrimination work in La Paz, Bolivia : A study of the perceptions and beliefs of the employees regarding the ethnic anti discrimination work at a public university.Ericson, Anna, Widmark, Sara January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is based on a qualitative research made on a public university in La Paz, Bolivia. The aim was to examine the beliefs and perceptions of the employees regarding the ethnic anti discrimination work at the university. As the Bolivian anti discrimination law and the constitution of 2009 has been made to improve the rights for the indigenous groups in Bolivia,we also wanted to hear if the laws have been implemented in their daily work.Seven interviews were done with the help of an interpreter, and a mix of goal oriented and snowball selection was used. Through the interviews, we found out that the ethnic anti discrimination work at the university is almost non-existing. It also showed that not much has been done to follow the law and the reforms of the constitution. This can be seen as nonperformative.Even though there are regulations about discrimination, the university is not actively working on the implementation of them. The opinion if an anti discrimination work was needed varied among the employees, as some respondents said that discrimination did not even exist at their faculty. To improve the ethnic anti discrimination work many of the respondents pointed on the need of a change in the culture. One important discussion has been about the lack of communication, information and education. These facts together with the change of culture can be seen as the most important factors to make progressions within the ethnic anti discrimination work at the university.

Cette thèse questionne la dé-ethnicisation de l’emploi, formulée comme critère d’entrée dans la modernité par le gouvernement de la Malaisie. L’hôtel de luxe occidental à Kuala Lumpur, Malaisie, constitue le champ empirique. Le degré d’ethnicisation de l’emploi est testé par une enquête quantitative sur une population de 786 individus. Les résultats montrent une association forte de l’ethnicité avec l’emploi. L’enquête qualitative se concentre sur les espaces sociaux alimentaires présents dans l’offre de restauration et fait apparaître une multiplicité de facteurs contribuant à cette ethnicisation, dont des pratiques orientées de recrutement et des phénomènes de groupisme ethnique. La vocation d’apprentissage culturel de l’archipel anthropotechnologique est de réconcilier les acteurs sociaux avec des systèmes culinaires exogènes. Des formes identitaires au travail sont ainsi formées, notamment dans le cas d’incorporation récursive d’un aliment marqué par un interdit religieux. La marginalité sociale subséquente se façonne sur un mode défensif ou stratégique. Cette recherche met en dialogue les champs de l’anthropologie historique, la socioanthropologie du travail, la sociologie de l’entreprise, et la sociologie de l’alimentation. La contribution de cette thèse est la proposition d’outils conceptuels et analytiques originaux, tels « l’archipel anthropotechnologique », la notion de « dégustateur », et l’articulation du principe de coupure bastidien à l’analyse stratégique croziérienne. / This thesis investigates the de-ethnicization of occupation, coined as criterion of entry into modernity by the government of Malaysia. The Western Luxury Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is selected as empirical field. The degree of ethnicization of occupation has been tested through a quantitative analysis on a sample of 786 respondents. Results show a strong association of ethnicity with occupation. The qualitative analysis focuses on food social spaces being present within the food and beverage outlets supply, demonstrating a multiplicity of factors contributing to this particular ethnicization, such as biased recruitment practices and ethnic groupism phenomena. The anthropotechnological archipelago bears a mission of cultural education, aiming at familiarizing social actors with exogenous culinary systems. Types of identity at workplace are being formed, especially when food stigmatized by religious taboos is being recursively ingested. Social marginality subsequent to this action can be shaped on a defensive or strategic mode. This research articulates the academic fields of historical anthropology, work socio-anthropology, corporate sociology, and food sociology. The contribution of this thesis is to propose original conceptual and analytical tools, such as the “anthropotechnological archipelago”, the concept of “taster”, and the articulation of the Bastidian compartmentalization principle to the Crozierian strategic analysis.

Currently, most adolescent self injurious behavior research is focused on adolescent White females, indicating that self-injury may be more prevalent among females and those of Caucasian decent (Whitlock, 2010). This session will present data from a current study indicating that perhaps males and other ethnic groups are also engaging in this destructive coping mechanism, perhaps in differing ways (self hitting and/or physically aggressive behaviors resulting in injury) than are being focused on by current conceptual and empirical works.

Tracking Chemistry Self-Efficacy and Achievement in a Preparatory Chemistry CourseGarcia, Carmen Alicia 01 July 2010 (has links)
Self-efficacy is a person's own perception about performing a task with a certain level of proficiency (Bandura, 1986). An important affective aspect of learning chemistry is chemistry self-efficacy (CSE). Several researchers have found chemistry self-efficacy to be a fair predictor of achievement in chemistry. This study was done in a college preparatory chemistry class for science majors exploring chemistry self-efficacy and its change as it relates to achievement. A subscale of CAEQ, Chemistry Attitudes and Experiences Questionnaire (developed by Dalgety et al, 2003) as well as student interviews were used to determine student chemistry self-efficacy as it changed during the course. The questionnaire was given to the students five times during the semester: in the first class and the class before each the four tests taken through the semester. Twenty-six students, both men and women, of the four major races/ethnicities were interviewed three times during the semester and events that triggered changes in CSE were followed through the interviews. HLM (hierarchical linear modeling) was used to model the results of the CSE surveys. Among the findings, women who started at significantly lower CSE than men accomplished a significant gain by the end of the semester. Blacks' CSE trends through the semester were found to be significantly different from the rest of the ethnicities.

Para tanto, utilizamos de fontes documentais de vários arquivos existentes em Minas Gerais. Formulação do conceito de crioulização e de crioulo, demografia histórica, estratégias escravas e senhoriais nas cartas de alforrias, cultura material e herança imaterial, e os compromissos das irmandades foram algumas das documentações analisadas. Assim, a nossa ideia principal era a de mostrar como os atores históricos vivenciavam o processo de crioulização de diferentes maneiras, formando um mosaico com várias formas de simbolizar e de adequar suas tradições culturais à sociedade mineira. / This study aims to investigate the representations of “colored men” of Minas Gerais in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as well as the development of some of the different processes of creolizations that occurred in the region. We used documentary sources from multiple files exist in Minas Gerais. Formulation of the concept of creolization and Creole, historical demography, strategies and noble slaves in the letters of manumission, material culture and immaterial heritage, and the commitments of the brotherhoods were some of the documentation analyzed. So our main idea was to show how historical actors experienced the process of creolization in different ways, forming a mosaic with variables and ways to symbolize their cultural traditions to mineira’s society.
