Dopad zavedení eura na konkurenceschopnost: Srovnání České republiky a Slovenska / The Impact of Euro Adoption on Competitiveness: The Comparison of Czech Republic and Slovakia

Polyák, Oliver January 2012 (has links)
Bibliographic citation POLYÁK, Oliver (2012). The impact of Euro Adoption on Competitiveness: The comparison of Czech Republic and Slovakia. Prague, 2012. 71 p. Master thesis (Mgr.) Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Economic Studies. Master thesis supervisor prof. Ing. Oldřich Dědek, CSc. Abstract The present master's thesis is focused on the impact of introducing the common European currency on competitiveness of a country. There has been a lot written about the possible effects of euro adoption on economies of the first eurozone participants. The contribution of this thesis is that we explore the impact of euro introduction on competitiveness of Slovakia, in comparison to the Czech Republic which still uses its own national currency. Our findings suggest that most of the analyzed competitiveness indicators evolved largely in parallel in both countries. Positive trade effects brought about by the introduction of the euro are rather moderate - up to 5%. Slovak credit development was more favorable during the crisis, reflecting lower interest rates in eurozone. On the other hand, high contributions to European stabilization funds may hamper Slovak economic growth and negatively influence country's competitiveness in future. Our part of the author's thesis that the year 1492 was the beginning of the Amerindian masking by a domineering and violent ethos brought by Europeans. In the first chapter of the thesis, presents the historical context of Latin American from 1492 with the arrival of Columbus and the beginning of the deployment of European colonization process from the idea that culture and life of the natives did not have any ethical value and cultural, forcing the indigenous culture to give rise to the culture of the colonizers. In the second chapter, it is critical to the concept of Euro centrism, especially the Hegelian view of history, starting from the liberating practice of Fray Bartolome de Las Casas, who knew how to understand and respect the differences between Indians and settlers and to develop a "Good Colonization" , respecting differences and customs of the natives. In the chapter sees himself as the philosopher Enrique Dussel presents a new way of conceiving ethics Latino Americana, a new release called ethos, in which the otherness of lost Latino Americano resumed though the awakening of the victims, through their awareness the situation of oppression. This principle of freedom will find in the philosopher's ethics E. Lévinas support needed to understand the dimension of otherness and respect for the victims of the process of Euro centrism / O filósofo Enrique Dussel vem buscando ao longo de seu pensamento e de suas obras, fazer uma nova abordagem e releitura do processo colonizador na América Latina.

The decline in italian public support for the euro: The role of economic factors

De Matteis, Giulia, Social Sciences & International Studies, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
The thesis documents the changes in Italian public opinion towards the Euro. Its aim is to assess the relevance of economic factors for the decline in Italian support for the common currency. The thesis begins by assessing the extent to which support for the Euro has declined in Italy. While there has been popular, media and political comment on this issue, the thesis investigates the changes in attitude through the use of survey material and concludes that there is compelling evidence that public support for the Euro has declined in Italy. The thesis adopts a utilitarian/rational choice approach in order to investigate the reasoning behind the Italian public's developing relationship with the single currency from 1998 to the present. Its central question is: How have economic factors impacted on the Italian public's support for the Euro? The analysis focuses on Italians' perceptions - not their actual knowledge - of national and individual level economic changes brought about by the single currency. The thesis investigates how such perceptions have impacted Italian popular support for the Euro over the period 1998-2007. The method employed in this thesis is primarily based around analysing quantitative data gathered from Standard and Flash Eurobarometers. Other sources considered are academic literature and newspaper articles. The analysis clearly suggests that Italians' optimism towards their national and personal economic situations have all decreased since the Euro was introduced, concurrently with their diminishing support for the Euro. This work suggests that the main reason for decreased support lies in Italian perceptions that the Euro has contributed to worsening economic situations at both the national and individual levels. In particular, Italians believe the Euro has spurred inflation and diminished their purchasing power, and accuse it of failing to promote economic growth and jobs. However, Eurobarometer data combined with newspaper articles indicate that it is the perceived economic consequences at the individual level - loss of purchasing power due to Euro-related price increases, and pessimism towards their household financial situation - that more strongly determine Italians' decreasing support for the Euro.

Modelling Nonlinearities In European Money Demand: An Application Of Threshold Cointegration Model

Korucu Gumusoglu, Nebile 01 February 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The money demand function has been regarded as a fundamental building block in macroeconomic modelling, as it represents the link between the monetary policy and rest of the economy. The extensive literature on money demand function is concerned with the existence of a stable money demand function, which ensures adequate prediction of impact of a given change in money supply on other economic variables such as, inflation, interest rates, national income, private investment and other policy variables. This thesis employs both linear and nonlinear estimation methods to investigate the relationship between money demand, GDP, inflation and interest rates for the Euro Area over the period 1980-2010. The aim of this thesis is to compare the European money demand in linear and nonlinear framework. First a vector autoregression (VAR) model has been estimated. Then a threshold cointegration model has been employed and nonlinearity properties of the money demand relationship has been investigated. In contrast to the existing empirical literature, linear VEC model can find evidence of stability, however it has some conflicting results which can be explained by the nonlinearity of the model. Empirical results of MTAR type threshold cointegration specification verifies the nonlinearity in European money demand. The adjustment coefficient of lower regime suggests faster adjustment towards long run equilibrium compared to upper regime in nonlinear model. Moreover, the nonlinear model presents better fit to economic literature than linear model for European money demand.
