The educational endeavours of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa in historical perspective

Ravhudzulo, Mbulaheni Aaron 06 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Since its inception in 1833 the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa has been a missionary church and has always had its own missionary work. It started to organise the Christianization, Evangelization and Westernization endeavours to take place inside the territories of South Africa. The Evangelical Presbyterian Church Missionaries founded, financed, maintained, controlled and administered their educational endeavours without any moral or financial support from the Government. The main purpose of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Missionaries in founding and supporting schools has been to use education as an auxiliary to the evangelization of the indigenous people of South Africa. Elementary schools served as instruments of direct evangelization rather than secular education. Pupils were taught the 3 R's, namely, reading, writing and arithmetic. Education was a useful tool that enabled the converts to read the Bible and other religious material on their own and preferably in their own language. Converts who demonstrated the ability to read, write and do simple arithmetic were trained to become missionaries' helpers. As these earliest converts became proficient and competent, they were posted out into the interior with the instructions to start new church centres and schools. Although the teaching which took place inside these schools was not of high quality, it was definitely better than nothing. The Evangelical Presbyterian Church Missionaries together with missionaries of other denominations provided virtually all the education which was available for the Blacks in South Africa. Through missionary endeavours the South African Government have realized that Western education and civilization has been important forces which helped the indigenous people to advance individually and collectively in the social, political and economic fields. Western technology and culture successfully won the indigenous people of South Africa to Western civilization. The acceptance of Christianity and the introduction of the White man's rule in the interior of South Africa effectively stopped the inter-tribal wars. The missionaries have made a noteworthy contribution to the education of the indigenous people of South Africa. They empowered the Blacks to play a worthy part side by side with members of other races (Whites, Coloureds and Indians) in the development of the country they shared. / Educational Studies / D.Ed. Evangelicals encountering Muslims : a pre-evangelistic approach to the Qu'ran

Johnson, Wesley Irvin 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis looks at the development of Protestant and Evangelical encounter with Muslims from the earliest days of the Modern missions movement. Special attention is given to the dynamic equivalence model (DEM), which resulted in a new method for interpreting the Qur’an called the Christian Qur’anic hermeneutic (CQH). I begin with the early Protestant ministers among Muslims, such as Martyn and Muir. Pfander’s (1910) book, The balance of truth, embodies the view that the Qur’an teaches an irrevocable status of inspiration for the Old and New Testaments. The early and mid-twentieth century saw a movement away from usage of the Qur’an during Evangelical encounter with Muslims. Direct model advocates bypass the Qur’an and other religious questions for an immediate presentation of the gospel. The 1970s saw the development of the DEM, which produced significant changes in how Evangelicals encountered Muslims. Pioneers like Nida, Tabor, and Kraft implemented dynamic equivalence as a model in Evangelical ministry. Concurrently, Accad and Cragg laid groundwork for the CQH. The DEM creates obscurity in anthropology by promoting an evaluation of cultural forms as essentially neutral. This is extended to religious forms, even the Qur’an. Such a simple, asocial value for symbols is not sufficient to account for all of human life. Cultural forms, especially those intrinsically religious, are parts of a complex system. Meaning cannot be transferred or equivocated with integrity from one context to another without a corresponding re-evaluation of the entire system. Theological difficulties are also produced by the DEM and the CQH, and include the assigning a quasi-inspirational status to the Qur’an and a denial of unique inspirational status to the Christian Scriptures. If the gospel is communicated through the Qur’an, then it is difficult to deny some level of God-given status to it. Further, the Christian Scriptures are not unique as inspired literature. My proposal for how to use the Qur’an responsibly looks to Bavinck’s elenctics and is presented as Qur’anic pre-evangelism. Rather than communicating Biblical meaning through the Qur’an, Evangelicals can focus on areas of the Qur’an that coincide with a lack of assurance felt by Muslims in anthropology. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. CRISTIANISMO ETÍOPE A PARTIR DA EXPERIÊNCIA ÉTNICA NARRADA EM ATOS 8, 26-40 / Ethiopian Christianity in the perspective of the account of Acts 8,26-40.

Those experiences were lived and realized in the period of Early Christianity and, without a doubt, contributed significantly to its expansion process. We present the passage of Acts 8,26-40, the episode of Philip and the Ethiopia n. What happens here is a dislocation of the missionary-geographical axis from Samaria to the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza , and reaching back to Caesarea. The text opens up the horizon of Christian experiences to other peoples and nations represented in the figure of the Ethiopian eunuch. Taking Acts 8,26-40 in its Lucan redaction as a starting point, using exegetical methods and historical-literary resources, based on the theoretical reference to the concepts of ethnicity and ethnic boundaries, we intend to investigate the possibility of a Christian experience lived in Ethiopia, which constructed itself ethnically from the identities that interacted in the text, and which points out to the imaginary of Ethiopia s symbolic universe. Doing so, we reclaim, within Biblical Exegesis, hermeutical issues for our own theological, biblical, and pastoral practice, on the horizon of the identities and ethnic boundaries of the Africanamerican and Caribian universe. Apresentamos a perícope Atos 8,26-40.

Francisco Ribeiro da Silva 28 September 2015 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the role that the Roman Catholic Church has played in rebuilding senses to northeastern migrants in order to establish a new nomos with the consequent re-creation of a plausibility structure, considering the project ecclesial evangelization facing the challenges of migration put in place in Asa Branca neighborhood, whose analyzes are made based on the theories enshrined in the religious field, with the exponent Peter Berger. In this approach, consider how was the historical process of migration in Brazil and, concurrent with this, which led to the migration of the State of Maranhão populations toward Roraima between 1980 and 1985. A recorded priori that such effort of the Catholic community in that neighborhood generated a social movement of accommodation and at the same time challenged by the migrant group front to the adversities such as unemployment, poor housing conditions, public transportation, lack of childcare and health centers standing out there the role of women. In chapter 1 we make an approach to the migration process in Brazil and Roraima, with an emphasis on shifting Maranhão state people to this region to, in Chapter 2, we present the strategies of the Catholic Church in welcoming the migrant in Wing neighborhood white. In chapter 3 we characterize this church action against the challenge of establishing a plausibility structure for the migrant, who takes the land as their new "homeland".

Davi Daniel Barbosa 18 March 2017 (has links)
This dissertation reflects on evangelization, the call for freedom for conversion to the Gospel and a commitment to the neighbor, the reason and central mission of Christianity, its foundations and its development in Brazil and the main challenges that the Church has faced in this process. Among the challenges - and opportunities - is the Internet, a computer network widely used as a means of communication that comes to form of a new environment mediated by technology with a porous frontier that invades the space of human beings coexisting, leading to great transformations and determining a new style of thinking, acting, perceiving, speaking, creating and keeping new subjects, transforming the way people relate. This social network is described, then, presenting its main characteristics, from the cut of the virtual spaces of greater movement in Brazil at present, and seeks to detect the openness to the transcendence that arises in these environments, as well as the requirements of new Languages and attitudes of the Church to communicate adequately in this field. In the agenda of questions about evangelization, the internets thematic already occupies a prominent place, because of the challenges it poses in organizing and speaking about ecclesial communities, but above all in the theological opportunity to listen to the mystery of the Word by communicating between and besides the internet user in their virtual networks. In order to circumscribe this new mystique, through the bibliographical research, the dissertation covers the main documents issued by the Magisterium of the Church and also the works of renowned authors such as: João Batista Libanio, Mário de França Miranda and Antonio Spadaro, seeking to know how the Church has positioned itself in relation to this new environment and checking the main tensions that have arisen, how the Church confronts them and what results have been achieved, what pastoral and theological suggestions can be made for contemporary evangelization.

[en] The Christian faith is based from its origin in the Trinity experience of God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - which is revealed in Jesus Christ, especially in his paschal mystery. Before the current faith crisis, Christians are encouraged to promote a New Evangelization announcing, with courage and joy, the God of Jesus Christ as a possibility of fulfillment and salvation. This thesis work aims to present, in a systematic way, Bruno Forte s Trinitarian Christology as a way to prepare a discourse about God which, from the Trinitarian revelation in Jesus Christ perspective, especially within the scope of his paschal mystery, will overcome the numerous misinterpretations and manipulations of God s image which have been promoting atheism and indifference to the question of God. It will show that a Trinitarian Christology can contribute effectively to the path of conversion and new evangelization to be assumed by the Church.

Ungerer, Andre Gerhardus 23 October 2010 (has links)
This study deals with the process of building up the local congregation and the manner in which missional objectives are achieved. The study is undertaken against the background of the disturbing decline in membership numbers particularly in the two traditional Reformational churches in South Africa, namely the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) and the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa. This decline is in line with similar tendencies in mainstream churches the world over. Collins’s (2006) three questions to the local congregation constitute the point of departure. Firstly: To what degree does the congregation function effectively in line with her mission in the world? Secondly: To what extent does the congregation make a distinct impact on the community? If the congregation were to disappear all of a sudden – will it leave a serious void in the community? The third question deals with sustainability: Is the congregation’s long term impact of such nature that its success is not just attributable to a single leader. The three questions have been adapted according to Collins’s process model (2001) and the key aspects of the theory of building up the local church are discussed in Chapters 2 and 3. The bulk of Chapter 2 deals with the very important matter of the missio Dei and discusses how the congregation should discover and enact her missional calling in the local community. The study furthermore deals with mission in the current South African context, particularly in view of the fact that an entirely new mission field has opened itself up with the influx into the country of so many people from neighboring countries who have come to live in our midst. Chapter 4 deals with the empirical testing associated with the study to establish if the study’s hypothesis, namely whether local churches that have undergone a structured process of building up the local church are missionally more successful than those that have not undergone a structured process, can be verified. The findings in this regard are dealt with in Chapter 5, while certain aspects that characterize the missional congregation in current times are also discussed. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Practical Theology / unrestricted
