The Mediating Role of Self-esteem in the Relationship between Perfectionism and Exercise Dependence / Självkänslans medierande roll i relationen mellan perfektionism och träningsberoende

Jansson, Sofie, Widlund, Susanne January 2017 (has links)
The purpose with the study was to investigate some of the factors thatmight contribute to the development of exercise dependence. This byinvestigating if self-esteem works as a mediator in the relationshipbetween perfectionism and exercise dependence. We conducted anonline survey among regular exercisers in Sweden (N = 177). Themediating analysis showed that self-esteem partially explained theassociation between perfectionism and exercise dependence. That is,self-esteem can help clarify the nature of the relationship. In conclusion, this study reveals that it is important to further investigate theunderlying psychological mechanisms to why some people are exercise dependent.

The data were obtained byapplying the Dependency Scale Physical Exercises, Muscle dysmorphia inventory, and directobservation of behavior during physical activity. The sample included nine participants, allteachers of Physical Education, separated into two groups defined as PréQuest and PósQuest.Despite this separation, found through analysis of the scale and inventory, there is nosignificant difference between groups. A relationship between the responses of forms andtopography of behaviors during practice was found, indicating that the higher the level ofexercise dependence and symptomatic level of muscular dysmorphia, the greater theoccurrence of behaviors with aesthetic purpose. The media, in this context, has beenmediating, creative, reinforcing and normalizing a body ideal. Those who do not fit the bodysaid " perfect," and collected feel dissatisfied. With the changes in the media, economic andother social fields instances, the cult of the body has gained more space, so it has never beenhandled, used, and disposed of as set in the twenty-first century, leading people to relentlessand endless worry and search for the "perfect" stereotype that society has built. Thus, it hasbeen common practice too much physical exercise , drastic changes in diet and use of variousmedia immediacy of body modification, enabling the development of psychological disorderssuch as muscle dysmorphia.

Motivation behind young women's excessive exercise : A qualitative study from a Self-determination perspective

Johansson, Karin, Sjöbom, Valeria January 2015 (has links)
Exercise is an important part of well-being. However, when performed excessively, it can lead to negative consequences such as anxiety, depression and feelings of guilt. This study aimed to qualitatively investigate what motivational regulations, defined by the Self-determination theory, that may provide an insight into why young women engage in excessive exercise. Data from seven participants was analyzed through a thematic analysis and resulted in four themes: Exercise affected by social influence, Ambivalence toward the amount of exercise, Benefits of exercise and Exercise affecting the sense of self. All of the motivational regulations belonged to the extrinsic type of motivation, ranging from external to integrated regulation, with social influence and health benefits being the most frequently mentioned reasons for exercise. Also, the informants were able to explain why they exercise, but less so in regard to the amount of exercise.

Friberg, Josefine, Sallander, Emma January 2014 (has links)
Background: The benefits of physical activity is often discussed, but too rarely the consequences when it becomes excessive. It creates a complex situation when exercise and being "healthy" is essentially seen as something positive. Young women today are exercising increasingly, and they have the highest probability of ending up in a risky behavior such as eating disorders, mental illness and exercise dependency. Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the underlying factors that can be identified for these young women who exercise more than recommended. Method: This study is qualitative in nature since we want to study why young women think, do and act in a certain way. The study was based on a hermeneutic approach as it is a research method in which interpretation is central. The method is used so we by understanding are able to interpret social expressions and other products of human consciousness. The empirical data is based on five semi-structured interviews with young women aged 19-25 years. Results: The study displays that the interviewed young women shows signs of exercise dependency. They also show signs of body fixation and a problematic relationship to diet. Thus, the young women need to be supported and made aware of the risks of overtraining causes and requires empowerment to gain power over their own lives. The findings show that there is much more to explore in the area, mainly the underlying factors for excessive exercise.
