The construction of video games as museum objectsCoville, Marion 19 October 2016 (has links)
This research explores exhibitions of video games featured in museums, in which commercial gaming products can be found. The study focuses on the changes of signification and uses that affect videogames during their shift from family living room to exhibition spaces, and investigates the professional spaces where the exhibition is designed. It relies on a field work during one of these exhibitions, completed by a study of public policy and the uses of video games in French museums. The study employs an interdisciplinary approach to explore the social, symbolic and material aspects of the object. This research is rooted in Cultural Studies and the study of the cultural aspects of social change. It also evokes various domains such as Communication, Sociology and Gender Studies. This research explores the articulation between three moments constructing video game as a museum object. First, the recognition of video game as a cultural good by public policies. Second, the design of a video game exhibition in a science center, that implies the modification of video games to create interactive exhibits. Third, the exhibition visited by people and the significance they grasp. Far from being isolated, these three moments are parts of a context where these different practices enrich one another.

This study has analyzed the presence of Italian sculptors in Paris from the beginning of the 20th Century to the end of the third decade, with the aim of reconstructing an important chapter of the history of artistic exchanges between Italy and France. We have favored an historical-philological method, based on critical publications and old French and Italian press.Concerning the beginning of the century, we have remarked a considerable participation of Italians in the main expositions in the French capital, such as official Salons; critical and market success allowed them to get a main role in the crew of the most popular artists.During the twenties, we have noted a less considerable participation of Italian sculptors; we have interpreted it in relation to historical context of fascist Italy, where the government was trying to develop a national cultural program. The Italian artists in France, after the First World War, didn't share the new Italian artistic orientation; they went on with outdated aesthetic choices. The last part of our research was interested in the development of the new Italian artistic language, finally known out of Italy. The Italian sculptors consequently could take part in arts activity in Paris, showing the face of a new sculpture, finally aware of its potentialities. France gave these experimentations a good welcome in the aim of constituting a longtime friendship with the Italian country.

This study aims at observing the interest in Touraine food specialities and how they were promoted by various players. Starting from the 1880s, with the appearance of regionalism (an integral part of which is gastronomy), our study ends in the late 20th century, when the notion of heritage becomes widespread and gets its current form. Thanks to the meeting of the agricultural theme, regionalist dynamics (politically and culturally speaking), and the tourist identity of the “Garden of France,” the emergence of food heritage is reflected on. All involved players build up a regional identity through the promotion of centres of tourist interest and set their sights on sustaining local attractiveness. The behavioural evolution throughout the period is observed, ranging from qualitative approach to excessive commercial drive; from strong interest in “terroir” to a certain detachment from it

A natureza desta liquidez é
A importância
Nowadays we live what Bauman (2001) defined as liquid modernity, it is identified as human
and social relationships that are caracterized by not having solid aspects in it or that one
which doesn´t keep its format for too long; changes are constant and inconsistencies are lived.
The nature of this liquidity is know by the lightness, mutability and mobility of relationships.
The importance of artistic memories preservation has also changed. With the breakthrough in
playback technologies and exposition techniques to majority of people has made works of art
disseminate easily just like images. These manifastations are in the city walls, places that have
their surfaces changed and erased daily. In view of this, one questions how the documentary
treatment of graffiti as a manifestation of ephemeral art takes place? As a consequence of this
thesis, it is pointed out that the documentary treatment of graffiti, converted into a digital
resource, will present elements for its consolidation as material cultural patrimony. The
purpose of this paper was to propose how the graffiti documentary treatment, converted into
an imagery resource, considering the ubiquity, the aspects of net information and information
ecology, and the new ways of making access available, were proposed. The study presents a
qualitative approach, of a descriptive-exploratory nature having as research universe projects
of digital exhibitions of urban art. As a result, it has been found that the strategic use of
information and communication technologies and the effective application of the standards of
representation of works of art are determining factors for guaranteeing storage, retrieval and
ubiquitous access to material cultural heritage. The graffiti document representation proposal
presents the VRA Core - Resources Association Visual Version 4.0 data structure standard,
due to its better adaptation to the description of the graffiti - type art manifestation, as it
allows the correlation between work, image and collections. In this sense, it was possible to
elaborate an application proposal containing three new descriptive elements: "cultural
citation", "citation space" and "ideological citation" as a way to bring the context in which
graffiti was created and present elements that make feasible the graffiti as material cultural
heritage.

La promotion des beaux-arts en Espagne (1853-1898). Soutenir les beaux-arts en temps de crise / Promoting the Fine Arts in Spain (1853-1898). Supporting the Arts in a Context of CrisisAssier, Mathilde 20 October 2018 (has links)
This dissertation aims to bring to light the organization of the fine arts system and the conditions under which works of art were produced in Spain between 1853 and 1898, centering on three leading cities: Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville. During this period of political and economic crisis, usually understood through the lens of the paradigm of Spanish backwardness or failure, the artists’ disenchantment was considerable. However, far from driving them into passive resignation, this spurred a desire for cultural "regeneration," born of countless debates over the way in which the arts should be supported and a keen interest in comparison with what was happening abroad. This intellectual exuberance led to a renewal of the institutions promoting the arts, giving way to the creation of museums, exhibitions, contests, and grants. The analysis of the artistic missions of the royal household, the Ministry of Development, diputaciones (provincial governments), societies of artists, and the various Economic Societies of Friends of the Country, relies on case studies and reveals the agents at work: senior and junior civil servants, not-known or famous artists, and politicians. Rooted in broad archival research, this journey through the world of Spanish art enriches our understanding of the goals, consequences, and specific features of the public and private support of the arts on a regional and national scale and within the context of the construction of the nation-state.

The present study was a comparative analysis of narratives in natural history museums in order to identify and quantify the use of information on animal behavior in evolutionary context. An initial step was to gather character to prepare a data matrix where they were coded. The textual information was obtained through images (photos and videos) of the panels and other narrative elements or text files transferred by the researched institutions. The photos were assembled according to the order suggested in the exhibition and organized in word file. The texts were transcribed and organized into word file to be analyzed. The current study contributes to a new area of research providing new set of characters (ethological, expographic and thematic) to establish standards of approach for the characters in their different forms. Phylogenetic cladistic methodology was used to establish relations between the narratives of exhibition using behavioral characters. The methodology was chosen to present relevant results for non-organismic systems. In order to become applicable, the system only needs to be subject to the Darwinian algorithm where an information system (genetic or symbolic) which shows hereditary variability (transmitted), given enough time, will be subject to the selection process that results in the adaptation of the system (narratives) to new environmental pressures (cultural). The results from the phylogenetic analysis showed low frequency of information in the approach to the subject of behavior in exhibitions in the natural history museums. On the other hand, an increase in the complexity of the resourses used in the approach to behavioral issues was observed along the branches of the tree found. This complexity is due both to the scope and theme of the exhibition about the resources applied in their executions. Thus, not surprisingly, the AMNH Darwin exhibition (with its wealth of resources) and Ethology of SDM (with its wealth of behavioral information) appear in this study as sister group within the more derived branch of the tree.
