A Follow-Up Study of the Edith Bowen Gifted Program

Campbell, Richard Alan 01 May 1984 (has links)
Former participants of an elementary-level gifted program were followed into junior high to determine the impact of the gifted program on their academic achievement and extracurricular participation. Parent and student perceptions of the gifted program were also determined. Academic achievement was measured by the variables grades in specific academic subjects, grade point averages, and achievement test scores. Extracurricular participation patterns were determined by response to a questionnaire on extracurricular activities. Intellectually- gifted former participants were compared on academic achievement and extracurricular participation to a comparable group of students who did not participate in any gifted program. No significant differences were found between the two groups. It was found that former participants of the gifted program were participating in their areas of giftedness as well as other areas of extracurricular activity. A substantial percentage of former participants were found to be excelling in their participation in extracurricular activities. It was also found that the gifted program was perceived positively by students and parents. It was concluded that the gifted program did not have an impact, positive or negative. on the subsequent academic performance of its former participants in junior high. It was also concluded that the gifted program did not have an impact, positive or negative, on the subsequent extracurricular participation of its former participants in junior high.

The Impact of Extracurricular Activities on Children's School Performance and Mental Health

Crews, Amber L. 01 May 2005 (has links)
The relationship between the amount of extracurricular activities and the school performance and mental health of children and adolescents was examined. One hundred thirty-three parents completed measures on extracurricular activity participation, academic performance, and mental health for their children in Grades 3-12. Results indicated one significant linear and one significant curvilinear relationship between extracurricular activity participation and school performance of adolescents. As adolescents were involved in additional extracurricular activities, their school performance improved (in a linear relationship), while median amounts of activity were related to the best grades (in a curvilinear relationship). Although these results were significant, their practical meaningfulness is limited due to a weak linear relationship and moderate curvilinear relationship. Significant relationships were not found between extracurricular activity participation and school performance of children or between extracurricular activity participation and the mental health of children or adolescents (52).

Do Extracurricular Activities Help Adolescents Develop Academic Self-Efficacy? Evidence for How and Why

Burr, Brianne Louisa 15 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Previous research has linked extracurricular activities to academic performance for adolescents, but it remains unclear through what mechanisms they are linked. I posit that extracurricular activities lead to the development of academic self-efficacy, which in turn improves academic performance. This study examines the nature of the relationship between participation in extracurricular activities and academic self-efficacy for adolescents. Using data from the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002, I find that academic self-efficacy is positively related to participation in extracurricular activities. Results indicate that participation in a diversity of types of extracurricular activities such as in both sports and student government is also related to greater academic self-efficacy. Additional analyses reveal that this effect levels out and begins to decrease at high levels of involvement, when the adolescent is involved in a high number of activities or spends a high number of hours per week in extracurricular activities. Implications for adolescents are discussed.

Lessons Learned from Java Jam: An Alternative Music Making Event at the High School Level

Gulish, Sarah Anne January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this intrinsic case study was to understand the function and significance of Java Jam--an annual music performance event at a public high school in which students select and rehearse music to perform. Five questions guided the study: How do different groups of Pikeford High School community members view Java Jam? How does Java Jam influence music-making? What are the successes and failures of Java Jam? What are the connections between Java Jam participants and school music? And, how does Java Jam affect the Pikeford High School community? In this study, I provide a detailed description of Java Jam through the perspective of 24 participants representing varied roles among PHS community members: students, teachers, parents, and alumni. The study was bound by both time and place, and data were collected at Pikeford High School during the 2013-2014 school year. Data used in this study consist of personal interviews, a focus group session, observations, and archival data submitted by participants. The research results are presented as both a personal narrative and case description from participant perspectives. This study provides an example of extracurricular alternative music making in which students engage in self-directed learning and peer learning. This study impacts the field of music education in that it demonstrates positive outcomes from an event such as Java Jam, including increased student autonomy, space for musical creativity, and increased confidence among student participants. I present additional implications for the field of music education, music teacher education, and future research to close the study. / Music Education

<b>The Influence of Extra-/Co-Curricular Participation on Student Well-Being and Professional Development</b>

Beata Nicole Johnson (19837887) 11 October 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">This dissertation presents a multi-method investigation of first-year engineering students’ extracurricular and co-curricular (extra-/co-curricular) participation, examining its impact on their professional development and well-being. Through three interrelated studies, this dissertation aims to broaden conceptualizations of extracurricular participation and to develop a holistic framework capturing the ways in which these activities and experiences influence students.</p><p dir="ltr">The first study analyzed survey data from 710 first-year engineering students to characterize what about participation in a given extra-/co-curricular experience is impactful to students and to identify patterns in how students choose to participate in one or more extra-/co-curricular activities. Exploratory factor analysis identified seven dimensions of participation that characterize students’ participation experiences in a given activity, spanning social and career-related aspects: career-related experiences, professional development and networking, community engagement and leadership, financial support, social integration, peer-influenced exploration, and mentorship and peer relationships. Cluster analysis identified five profiles of participation in specific extra-/co-curricular activities: social-focused, career-preparation, comprehensive, interest-driven, and paid work. Findings show that many students seek a balance of experiences, with few activities characterized solely by engineering-specific elements and many students participating in combinations of recreational and career-preparation activities.</p><p dir="ltr">The second study analyzed 860 short-text, open-ended survey responses, investigating how students perceived the benefits of extra-/co-curricular participation in relation to dimensions of wellness. This analysis identified four themes in how students perceived the benefits of their participation: fostering a sense of community and belonging, offering peer mentorship and support networks, facilitating authentic experiences and career exploration, and supporting stress management and overall well-being through interest-driven participation. These themes spanned multiple wellness dimensions, including social, emotional, occupational, and intellectual wellness, with patterns in the benefits students perceived by type of extra-/co-curricular activity.</p><p dir="ltr">The third study examined the use of natural language processing (NLP) approaches to facilitate the analysis of the short-text, open-response survey datasets. This study compared NLP-facilitated results to the manual analysis of the open-response survey data, demonstrating consistency between these approaches. Findings also demonstrate areas where integrating NLP-facilitated results with manual analysis helped improve the codebook and resulting analysis.</p><p dir="ltr">This dissertation characterizes key dimensions and perceived benefits of extra-/co-curricular participation that support students’ professional development and well-being. By investigating how first-year engineering students participate in and benefit from extra-/co-curricular activities in complement to the curriculum, this research contributes to broader efforts in engineering education to create more inclusive and engaging learning environments.</p>

Vivência dos egressos do Programa de estágio extracurricular em enfermagem / Experiences of the egresses graduates of the extracurricular training program in nursing.

Rocha, Juliana Santos Amaral da 05 April 2018 (has links)
Introduction. Extracurricular training is an option to learn and develop the professional practice. It is not mandatory and enables knowledge acquisition about the work in the nursing field, and may contribute to the improvement of undergraduate nursing students. Considering the impact that the extracurricular stage has on these students, this research becomes important to increase the knowledge about this practice. Objectives. To analyze the experiences lived by the extracurricular internship program egresses according the assumptions of Pierre Bourdieu. Method. Present study is of historical and social, qualitative and exploratory nature. Data collection, were based on interviews with the undergraduates of the extracurricular training program of the German Hospital Oswaldo Cruz, obtained through the Snowball Sampling technique. This institution offers the extracurricular internship for many years and has enhanced the program over time. The Thematic Oral History method was used to conduct semi-structured interviews and the thematic analysis established by Minayo who allowed performing a general reflection on the apprehension of the produced texts meaning. The theoretical framework of Pierre Bourdieu was applied for results analysis, allowing the understanding of social relationships, analyzing the social field and the habitus that are incorporated by the individuals and that are directed by an intentional symbolism that determines what Bourdieu called as \"symbolic violence\". Results. Twelve egressed students of the extracurricular internship program between 1979 and 1993 were interweaved. Three categories comprised of 10 subcategories emerged from the interviews: Category 1. Motivation for the extracurricular stage: the capital acquisition depicts the main reasons that led the participants to seek the extracurricular training during the nursing graduation: Category 2. The extracurricular stage: depicts the social field from the point of view of the participants; how the extracurricular stage was like during this period and how the social field allowed the incorporation of the new habitus. Category 3. The perception of the extracurricular stage for the egressed students. In this category, several meanings emerged about the perception that the egresses had due to the extracurricular stage. Conclusion. This study allows extending the knowledge about the history of extracurricular training course in nursing, especially in the German Hospital Oswaldo Cruz, the chosen scenario. In addition, characterize it from the perspective of the egressed students who participated in the program, in the analyzed context. Among the main findings, we highlight the influence that the extracurricular stage can exert on the development of behavioral skills designed by the institution, and which can define the acquisition of one of the awards in this social field, which is the professional hiring of the trainee at the end of the program. The possibility of professional insertion and the influence of extracurricular internship to the professional career are other highlighted points since it is evident how much the internship can facilitate the transition between the school and the professional life of undergraduate students in nursing.

This paper also analyses an extracurricular project entitled Drama in the development of citizenship , which was carried out in the public state school Berilo Wanderley in Natal/RN, between 1999 and 2005 with high school students. It comprises a case study that aimed at understanding how and why they chose to take drama classes outside of the school curriculum and even after they graduated, some of them never left the school project and even started participating in the cultural and artistic context of the city of Natal quite actively, both as part of an audience as well as on artistic, political, social and pedagogical performance. The project was high significant for its participants, for the school and for the community, by creating a sense of recognition of the relevance of the pedagogical and artistic production in the public school, as it managed to yield knowledge that helped students to understand the values of group work, sharing information, collaborative assessment and, most of all, to engender actions of protagonism by the teenagers themselves within their social environments. The empirical process developed is placed in a contemporary historical context where educational paradigms shifts occur, and where categories of youth empowerment and protagonism are fundamental to the educational process in the 21st century. The objective of this study is to reflect upon the pedagogical dimension of drama classes for teenagers, aiming at providing further discussions on the role of acting classes in the construction of the personality among youngsters, thus hoping to contribute to other teaching practices, including drama and other subjects of general education / Esta disserta??o tem como tema de estudo, o ensino de teatro e suas implica??es na vida dos adolescentes no mundo contempor?neo.
