Between aesthetics and politics : music in James Joyce, Ezra Pound and Sylvia Townsend Warner

This thesis explores the relationships between music, literature, aesthetics and politics in the novels of James Joyce, Sylvia Townsend Warner, and the poetry of Ezra Pound, to show the political relevance of how discourses of musical transcendence appear in these texts. These authors were notably political: Pound was involved with Italian fascism, Warner a Communist Marxist, while Joyce critics have been invested in claiming for him a liberal, humanist political position that is reflected in his writing. This allows me to analyse their engagement with music in light of their politics in order to make connections between aesthetics and politics through music in modernist literature. The texts analysed in this thesis are Joyce’s Chamber Music and Ulysses, Pound’s Cantos, his early essays and articles, and his musical theories ‘absolute rhythm’ and ‘Great Bass’, and finally Warner’s Mr Fortune’s Maggot, ‘The Music at Long Verney’, and The Corner That Held Them. I use a methodology, informed by the musicology and philosophy of T.W. Adorno, that moves between aesthetic and social approaches to music. I analyse the political significance of Joyce’s and Pound’s appropriation of musical forms as part of a radical departure from traditional aesthetic practices to articulate a newly modern subjectivity, and arrive at an analysis of Warner’s exploration of the tension between music as both transcendent aesthetic paradigm and material object with political meanings and functions. I argue that the extent to which writers and scholars continue to refer to discourses of musical transcendence as a way of exploring and representing humanity’s relationship with the world means that analyses of music’s social grounding, which can reject problems of signification and meaning, are not sufficient to explain the variety of functions music can fulfil in writing and in thought.

LINES THAT BIND: DISABILITY’S PLACE IN THE MODERNIST WRITINGS OF WILLIAM FAULKNER, AMY LOWELL, LANGSTON HUGHES, AND EZRA POUND

This dissertation explores the effects disability had on the aesthetics of American modernist writers like Langston Hughes, William Faulkner, Amy Lowell, and Ezra Pound at a time when eugenics' insistence on a superior and uniform humanity dominated social thought and how their writings complicate generalized conclusions espousing ablist tendencies in modernist literature, demonstrating that such generalizations can be complicated with careful attention to a broad range of modernist texts. The introduction highlights important ideas and events in the development of disability studies and applies the theory to Emily Dickinson’s “Safe in their Alabaster Chambers” to demonstrate how scholars have largely overlooked even well-known authors’ engagement with disability. The first chapter interrogates Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury to demonstrate that, rather than reify disability, Faulkner questions the idea of norms that imply a stable identity by alluding to and investigating ideas relevant to important events and conceptions of the time such as Henry H. Goddard’s The Kallikak Family and the U.S. Supreme court case of Buck v. Bell. Chapter two’s analysis of Langston Hughes's Fine Clothes to the Jew identifies a tendency in the poetry to enact Tobin Sieber’s concept of disability masquerade to assume but play against the intellectually disabled identity forced on Blacks at the time, rather than attempting to distance himself from the label as disability theorists such as Douglas Baynton posit generally occurs when racialized groups are associated with disability. In the third chapter, Robert McRuer’s concept of compulsory able-bodiedness is identified as a source for Amy Lowell’s fall from popularity and she is considered alongside conceptions of the freak to identify a source for her creativity most evident in the "polyphonic prose" of Can Grande's Castle, her invention to free poets of the restrictions of traditional cadenced verse. The final chapter offers a reading of Pound's Drafts & Fragments that, while highlighting this often neglected collection's importance because of the social awareness brought to it through Pound's twelve and a half years in a mental institution, also explores the limitations of readings that assume that his disabled status guided this poetry. Concluding the dissertation is an analysis of Sherman Alexie's Pulitzer prize winning young adult novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, that demonstrates disability’s continued applicability after eugenics’ fall from grace and highlights Alexie’s use of humor to get readers to stare as a part of considering the serious topics he writes into the novel, instigating what Rosemarie Garland-Thomson calls the "good stare" that welcomes identification between staree and starer. Together, these chapters attempt to further expand the inclusivity of discussions of modernism and complicate long-standing understandings of disability.

O meio de analisar o poema é conhecendo muito bem os elementos que o compõem e, para isso, usamos os três elementos da poesia de Ezra Pound. A finalidade é que, com esses aspectos teóricos, o tradutor de poesia possa nortear seu labor, criando sua própria “poética da tradução”, mas considerando os elementos fundamentais para desenvolvêla. Por essa razão, resolveu-se dialogar com os seguintes autores: Ezra Pound, Haroldo de Campos (Transcriação) e Jacques Derrida (Desconstrução). Eles se aproximam, por meio da tradução e do signo linguístico, das teorias líquidas de Zygmunt Bauman. No estudo das estruturas de Ezra Pound, foram usadas também as teorias antropológicas de Gaston Bachelard e Gilbert Durand (para a fenopeia) como os estudos de pragmática (para a logopeia) e a métrica literária (para a melopeia). Logo, fundamentos antropológicos são conjugados nesta versão metodológica integrada. O livro de poemas escolhido para tradução do português para o espanhol foi Todo Risco, o ofício da paixão, do poeta baiano Damário da Cruz. / El presente trabajo quiere ofrecer a la comunidad académica un nuevo punto de vista sobre los estudios de traducción de poesía. Con este trabajo, se pretende beneficiar a los traductores de poesía en general y a los traductores de portugués a español en particular. La forma de analizar el poema es conociendo muy bien los elementos que lo componen y para eso usamos los tres elementos de la poesía de Ezra Pound. La finalidad es que con estos aspectos teóricos, el traductor de poesía pueda nortear su labor creando su propia “poética de la traducción” pero considerando los elementos fundamentales para llevarla a cabo. Resolvimos dialogar con los siguientes autores: Ezra Pound, Haroldo de Campos (Transcreación) y Jacques Derrida (Deconstrucción). Éstos se aproximan por medio de la traducción y del signo lingüístico a las teorías líquidas de Zygmunt Bauman. En el estudio de las estructuras de Ezra Pound se usaron también las teorías antropológicas de Gaston Bachelard y Gilbert Durand (para la fenopéia) como los estudios de pragmática (para la logopéia) y la métrica literaria (para la melopéia). Pound traduziu criativamente Propércio e Mário Faustino traduziu parcialmente Pound, daí a possibilidade de relacioná-los; a tradução de Pound, central para este trabalho, é constituída por uma coletânea de doze poemas (e um extra) intitulada Homage to Sextus Propertius, dos quais apenas cinco foram traduzidos por Faustino. Pound mudou o modo de ler literatura latina em língua inglesa, propondo uma tradução que procurava ao mesmo tempo homenagear e renovar Propércio. Sua abordagem crítica e tradutória ressoou no Brasil através de poetas como Faustino e os irmãos Campos; além de levar em consideração seu paideuma, o ensinamento mais marcante de Pound retomado por Faustino é o da responsabilidade do poeta e de sua função na sociedade. A partir de uma apresentação da poesia de Propércio, analisamos comparativamente as traduções de Pound e Faustino, a fim de inferir quais foram as diferenças, perdas e os ganhos de cada uma, levando em conta o projeto tradutório e a época em que estavam inseridas. Por fim apresentamos uma proposta de tradução integral de Homage to Sextus Propertius, procurando aplicar na prática a discussão teórica sobre tradução que foi desenvolvida durante o trabalho. / Three different poets are aproched in this research, are they: Sextus Propertius, Ezra Pound and Mário Faustino, poets from different times and languages. Pound creativily translated Propertius and Mário Faustino partialy translated Pound, thence the possibility of connecting them; Pound’s translation, central in this work, consists in a colection of twelve poems (and an extra) entitled Homage to Sextus Propertius, from which only five were translated by Faustino. Pound changed the way of how to read latin literature in english language, proposing a translation that seeked to pay tribute and to renew Propertius at the same time. His critic and translating approach echoed in Brazil through poets like Faustino and the Campos brothers; besides taking into account the paideuma, the most outstanding guideline Faustino learned from Pound is that of the poet responsability and his function in society. Starting from a presentantion of Propertius’ poetry, we proceed to comparatively analyse the translations made by Pound and Faustino, in order to infer the differences, gains and losts of both, considering the project of translation and the age of each. Lastly we present a complete translation suggestion of Homage to Sextus Propertius in portuguese, seeking to apply in practice the teorical discussion about translation that was developed through this work.

Afrikaans: In teenstelling tot al die aandag wat in die navorsing op Esra-Nehemia aan historiese en literêre vraagstukke gewy is, het die teologiese inhoud van die boek weinig aandag gekry. Dieselfde geld vir die ideologiese inhoud van die boek - ten spyte daarvan dat die term toenemend in die Bybelwetenskappe gebruik word. Teen die agtergrond ondemeem hierdie proefskrif (a) om die begrippe teologie en ideologie op so 'n wyse te omskryf dat die verband en verskille tussen hierdie twee begrippe duidelik blyk (b) om die teologiese en ideologiese inhoud van Esra-Nehemia aan die hand van 'n literêre analise te beskryf (c) om die bruikbaarheid van Esra-Nehemia vir die Christelike kerk te beoordeel. Teologie kan kortliks omskryf word as 'n stel samehangende idees oor die persoon en werk van God in relasie tot mense. Ideologie, daarteenoor, verteenwoordig 'n stel samehangende idees oor die samelewing. Hoewel daar beslis 'n verband tussen hierdie twee begrippe bestaan, is daar ook wesenlike verskille. Dit gaan in die onderskeie gedagtekomplekse nie om dieselfde saak nie, en die bedoelings van teologie en ideologie verskil ook. Dit is die bedoeling van elke ideologie om die magsbelange van 'n bepaalde groep in die samelewing te bevorder. Teologie, daarteenoor, is eerder daarop afgestem om 'n verklaring te bied vir die wyse waarop God in die wêreld werksaam is en om die grondslag te Iê vir 'n wyse van godsdiensbeoefening wat in ooreenstemming is met die wil van God. Die beskrywings van Esra-Nehemia se teologie en ideologie wys nogtans uit dat daar in die boek 'n verweefdheid tussen godsdiens en politiek, tussen teologie en ideologie, bestaan. Dit is egter van kardinale belang om die prinsipieIe onderskeid tussen teologie en ideologie te handhaaf, aangesien dit verreikende gevolge vir die interpretasie en waardering van Bybelse tekste het. Trouens, slegs wanneer daar tussen teologie en ideologie onderskei word, kan Esra-Nehemia steeds vir die Christelike kerk bruikbaar wees. English: In contrast to all the attention devoted to historical and literary problems in the research on Ezra-Nehemiah, the theological contents of the book received scant attention. The same applies to the ideological contents of the book - in spite of the fact that the term is increasingly used in the Biblical sciences. Against this background this thesis sets out (a) to describe the concepts theology and ideology in such a way that the relation and differences between these two concepts become clear (b) to describe the theological and ideological contents of Ezra-Nehemiah by means of a literary analysis (c) to consider the continued value of Ezra-Nehemiah for the Christian church. Theology can be briefly described as a set of interconnected ideas about the person and work of God in relation to people. Ideology, on the other hand, represents a set of interconnected ideas about society. Although connections between these two concepts certainly exist, there are also substantial differences. These two distinct thought complexes do not share the same subject matter, and their intentions also differ. Every ideology aims to further the interests of a specific group of people within society. Theology, on the other hand, rather strives to provide an explanation for the way in which God acts in the world, and it aims to serve as a basis for a way of worshipping God in accordance with his will. Still, the descriptions of Ezra-Nehemiah's theology and ideology show that in this book religion and politics, or theology and ideology, are intertwined. It is, however, of the utmost importance to maintain the fundamental difference between theology and ideology, since it has far-reaching implications for the interpretation and evaluation of Biblical texts. Towards a Theology of Reconstruction for post-colonial Zimbabwe : a Missiological perspective

The issue of reconstruction has appealed to many nations that have moved from significant transitional periods, be it economic, social, and or political. This has made the reconstruction theology, a relevant theology. This study is a result of realities unfolding in Zimbabwe which left many to ask what is missing in Zimbabwe in order to have a better society. The study seeks to contribute to the reconstruction theology debate from a missiological perspective which is based on asking and answering the question, “what is the role of the Christian Church in reconstruction?” At the onset, the study seeks to assert the applicability of the Ezra - Nehemiah Motif in Zimbabwe. The research is motivated by the premise that the church ought to have the capacity to adequately formulate a public-social theology which meets the demands of society. It is on this basis that the research will grapple with the concerns for justice, aspects of difference in relationship to human life- human dignity, policies of democratisation and democracy, social development and societal peaceful coexistence. The theology of reconstruction has been argued as a praxis and deed-oriented model of rebuilding. Whilst appreciating the Liberation Theology and its value to Zimbabwe, it could be argued further that the liberation has served the purpose and the need for a complementary theology; - Reconstruction Theology. However, if this assertion is to be upheld, questions may be raised as to whether Reconstruction Theology seeks to replace Liberation Theology. It is therefore through this research that it can be established whether there is a replacement of or a complement of liberation theology with reconstruction theology. This research then aims to analyse the deplorable Zimbabwean, socio-economic and socio-political fibers that require reconstruction and transformation, to enable development of a better society in which human dignity is respected. Further to that, the research explores and reflects upon the theological and missiological models of reconstruction that could be considered in post-colonial Zimbabwe. It is in this research that some alternative cultural variables, which could help achieve national reconstruction are deconstructed in light of reconstruction of Zimbabwe. To achieve this research utilises African Renaissance as its theoretical framework and informed by social construction theory. This research engages in the quantitative and qualitative research methods, supported by interviews and questionnaires. There is a plethora of produced in published and unpublished literature that enriched this thesis. Furthermore, the research utilised various methodological approaches which includes theological, sociological, and post-colonial.
