How families facilitate the development of empathy in children: a family systems theory perspective

Kaufman, Mark January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Family Studies and Human Services / Walter R. Schumm / Abstract This study seeks to clarify a controversy in the literature about which characteristics of families are most responsible for facilitating the development of empathy in children. The study utilized a correlational research design and self-report questionnaires. The Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale measured the criterion variable, subjects’ levels of emotional empathy. The Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems’ accompanying questionnaire, the fourth version of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES IV) measured the two key predictor variables, levels of family cohesion and family flexibility, in the subjects’ families of origin. The central hypothesis of the Circumplex Model is that healthy family functioning would be predicted by balanced functioning on both of these key dimensions of family life. The first predictor variable, family cohesion, appears to encompass those factors emphasized by researchers who have asserted that positive family affective bonds would be the family characteristic most predictive of higher levels of empathy in children. The second predictor variable, family flexibility, appears to encompass those factors emphasized by researchers who have asserted that the style of parental discipline would be the family characteristic most predictive of higher levels of empathy in children. Participants in this study were all students at a mid-size, public, Midwestern university. A purposive convenience sample was utilized. Correlational statistics and multiple regression analyses were used to test hypotheses. The results suggested several conclusions. Balanced levels of family cohesion were positively associated with higher levels of emotional empathy, as predicted. The prediction that balanced levels of family flexibility would also be positively associated with higher levels of emotional empathy was not supported. Instead, higher levels of empathy were associated with a somewhat strict or rigid style of parental discipline. Various alternative explanations for these results are discussed, as are limitations of the study, recommendations for future research, and implications for practitioners.

Contributions of Family Leisure to Family Functioning Among Single-Parent Families

Hornberger, Laurel Beth 20 July 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of family leisure involvement to the family functioning of single-parent families among a large national representative sample. Two samples were gathered. The single-parent sample consisted of 384 families (384 parents and 384 youth). The dual-parent sample consisted of 495 families (495 parents and 495 youth). Data were analyzed from the parent, youth, and family perspective using two instruments. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale (FACES II) was used to measure family functioning and the Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP) was used to measure family leisure involvement. Blocked multiple regression analysis indicated a positive relationship between family leisure variables and family functioning variables among single-parent families. Family cohesion and family adaptability were affected by both core and balance activities, while family adaptability was affected slightly more by core activities than balance activities, from all three perspectives. Results also indicated that family functioning was very similar to dual-parent families while family leisure involvement among single-parent families was less. Implications for practitioners and recommendations for further research are discussed.

An Examination of Perceptions for Family Acculturation, Family Leisure Involvement, and Family Functioning among Mexican-Americans

Christenson, Owen D. 30 June 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between acculturation and aspects of family functioning (cohesion and adaptability) and family leisure involvement from Mexican-American parent, youth, and family perspectives. Acculturation of parents, youth, and families was measured using the Bidimensional Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (BAS). Family leisure involvement was measured using the Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP). Aspects of family functioning were measured using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES II). Sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, generation, family size, income, and education were also used to help predict levels of acculturation for family perspectives. The sample was obtained from communities in Texas and Utah and consisted of 74 Mexican-American families, including a parent and child from each family. Differences were found in measures of family leisure involvement and family functioning between Mexican-Americans and normative samples of Anglo-Americans. Findings suggest that family leisure involvement, aspects of family functioning, and sociodemographic variables helped to predict parent, youth, and family perspectives of acculturation. The independent and sociodemographic variables also helped to discriminate levels of acculturation for parents, youth, and families. Recommendations are given for commercial and community recreation programs targeting Mexican-American families, in addition to implication for further research.

Contribution of Family Leisure to Family Functioning Among Families with Adolescents in Mental Health Treatment

Nutter, Jasmine Aileen 24 November 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family leisure involvement and family functioning among families with an adolescent in mental health treatment. The sample (N=181) was obtained by sampling parents and adolescents enrolled in mental health treatment at Heritage Schools. Of the 181 participants, 52 cases consisted of matched parent and youth responses, 24 cases consisted of just parent responses, and 53 cases consisted of just adolescent responses. It was hypothesized that there would be a relationship between family leisure involvement and family functioning among families with youth in mental health treatment, and that when comparing this sample to a sample of normative families there would be differences between their family functioning and family leisure involvement. Findings indicated significant differences across all family functioning variables and some differences in family leisure involvement variables between the two samples. Findings also indicated significant positive relationships between family leisure and family functioning variables from the parent and youth perspectives in the sample of families with youth in mental health treatment. Recommendations for further research and implications for practitioners are discussed.

Familjestruktur i relation till symtom på psykisk ohälsa : En longitudinell studie om förhållandet mellan ungdomars familjekonstellation och symtom på psykisk ohälsa samt föräldraskapet som skyddsfaktor / Family structure in relation to symptoms of mental ill-health : A longitudinal study on the relationship between adolescents’ family constellation and symptoms of mental ill-health together with parenthood as a protective factor

Jonsson, Linn, Andersson, Victoria January 2023 (has links)
Family structure in relation to symptoms of mental ill-health - a longitudinal study on the relationship between adolescents’ family constellation and symptoms of mental ill-health together with parenthood as a protective factorMental ill-health in adolescence is something that has increased over time, at the same time it has also become more common to go through changes in family constellations during childhood as a result of parents choosing to separate. This can lead to a completely new lifestyle where the adolescent needs to adapt to changes such as living with a single parent alternatively step-parents or step-siblings, a new home, changed financial and material resources. The current study aims to examine the connection between family structures as a result of parental separation in relation to ill-health in order to broaden the understanding of the effects of the new living standards that many young people in today’s society live in.The data includes responses from four different Swedish municipalities based on the LoRDIA program and the current study has examined four of the program's measurement occasions, which includes an analytical sample of n=576. The data has been analyzed using descriptive data, bivariate and multivariate linear regression analyses. The results show that there are significant relations between living with a single parent and suffering from symptoms of ill-health. Furthermore, family cohesion can act as a protective factor against symptoms of mental ill-health and having a low family economy compared to classmates can be a risk factor. Experiencing early symptoms of mental ill-health is a contributing factor to the likelihood of developing symptoms of mental ill-health during high school.

The impact of domestic violence on family cohesion: exploring a pastoral approach in the Masvingo Diocese

Muzenda, Vincent Tirivanhu Marova 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English with summaries in English, Shona and Ndebele / Bibliography: pages 228-252 / The work being reported hereunder focused on spousal conflict as a threat to family cohesion, while exploring a pastoral approach in the Masvingo Diocese in Zimbabwe. Experience as a pastor has shown that domestic violence is cancerous in the Masvingo Diocese and this is proved by alarming statistics about this province. Many marriages have been irrevocably broken down and the moral fabric that used to characterise family cohesion seems to have evaporated into thin air. It is on that premise that the objective of the study was to suggest practical ways that can be employed to facilitate pastoral counselling among families, encountering spousal issues in the Masvingo Diocese. The research is anchored in Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy, complimented by White’s narrative therapy. The research adopts a mixed method approach which involved closed questionnaires, focus-group discussions and structured interviews. Some 40 respondents constituted the study sample and they were purposively sampled. The research sample consisted of four priests in the five deaneries and 36 ordinary members of the Catholic Church. The key results were that Logotherapy and narrative counselling are effective methods of assisting people to find new meaning in their lives. Practical ways which pastoral counsellors can adopt go a long way in ameliorating internal household strife. It must as well be stated that, as a recommendation, pastors have to take an active role in addressing this malicious domestic violence. Problems of domestic violence can be solved through pastoral care and counselling. / Iyi itsvagurudzo yezvinokonzerwa nemhirizhonga dzemudzimba pakubatana kwemhuri, pachiongororwa nzira yekufambisa chitendero muDunhu reMasvingo.
