The relationship between parental practices and suicidal behaviors in Québec adolescentsAhmadi, Shamila 08 1900 (has links)
Sommaire
Abstract
This thesis explores the relationship between the risk of suicidal behaviour in adolescents and their perception of parental practices used in their families. This study is primarily aimed at investigating the association between suicidal behavior in a Montreal sample of adolescents and several aspects of their parents’ parental practices including parent-child bonding, parental psychological and behavioral control, and parent- adolescent conflict. The second goal of this thesis was to examine the effect of parents’ marital status on adolescents’ suicidal behavior. The final objective of this study was to explore the link between gender difference and vulnerability to suicidal behavior in adolescents. The participants of this study included 1096 Montréal high school students, aged between 11 and 18 years, equally divided in boys and girls, in the province of Québec, Canada. There were two groups involved in this study: non suicidal and suicidal behavior. The suicidal behavior group included both suicidal ideation and suicide attempt behaviors. A self-report questionnaire was administrated to evaluate the level of parent and child bonding, the quality of parental psychological and behavioral control, and the level of adolescent’s conflict with each of the parents and risk of suicide in young individuals. A series of descriptive analysis and a multivariate analysis of covariant (MANCOVA) was performed in order to test the hypotheses of the study. The general hypotheses of the study postulating that adolescents who perceived a more troubled relationship with their parents, were at a higher risk of suicidal behaviors were confirmed. The evaluation of parental practices characteristics after being controlled for psychological distress and family structure concluded that in the case of intact families the high emotional impact and frequency of conflict with the mother, lack of maternal emotional bonding, excess of maternal psychological control, and lack of maternal supervision are significantly related to adolescents’ suicidal behaviors. In both families structures, the strongest significant characteristics of paternal parental practices perceived by adolescents with suicidal behavior was the lack of emotional bonding between father and child, the high impact and frequency of conflict between them, and lack of paternal supervision respectively. These results are interpreted in the light of socialization theory which emphasizes on the crucial role of the quality of the parent- adolescent bonding as a protective factor against suicidality in adolescents.
The result also revealed that adolescent girls are at a higher risk of demonstrating suicidal behaviors such as ideation and attempt than boys. The findings of this study demonstrate an urgent need for more research on adolescent’s suicidal behavior and risk factors especially on parents’ marital status. The study also highlights the necessity of designing prevention programs specifically aimed at adolescents with an elevated risk of suicide.

The impact of selected home environment factors on primary school learner's academic performance : a case studyNell, Sunet 19 June 2018 (has links)
English text with English, Northern Sotho and Afrikaans summaries / South Africa has a long and troubled educational history, from pre-colonial education to the fall of apartheid, and eventually the acquisition of equal education for all (Christie, 2006). Many changes took place during this transitional period in the democracy and liberation of the New South Africa by means of pupil-centred classrooms, Curriculum 2005 (Taylor, 1995) and Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). Although numerous studies have been conducted internationally and in South Africa on underperforming in schools, the focus of this study is to ascertain the key elements of why learners underperform. The study’s aim is to determine the influence of a learner’s socio-economic situation on scholastic performance with references to nutrition, family structure, and parental support of learners in primary schools in Tshwane.
In this full dissertation, the researcher found that most of the selected home environmental factors had no significant impact on the selected learners. It was, however, found (as many research already proved) that diet and sleep did have an influence on primary school learner academic performance.
In presenting this argument, the theoretical framework, socio-constructivism learning theory, and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, were used, as socio-constructivism states that although biological factors are a requirement for basic development to emerge, socio-cultural factors are crucial for basic natural processes to develop. Vygotsky’s socio constructivism theory indicates the uniqueness of the social environment and regards socio-cultural background as the primary and determining factor in the development of higher forms of human mental activity such as voluntary attention, intentional memory, logical thought, planning, and problem solving.
In conjunction with Vygotsky, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs sets the foundation for this study as it states that in order for a being to move to the next level, the lower level of needs, need to be satisfied first.
The objectives of the study were: - to determine what the impact of selected home environment factors on primary school learners’ academic performance is. To determine the relationship between poverty, family structure, and scholastic performance; to determine the influence of the type of dwelling on scholastic performance; to determine the influence nutrition have on a learners’ scholastic performance; and to determine the influence sleep deprivation has on learners’ academic performance.
The study used a quantitative approach, and the method included questionnaires that learners in Grade 5, Grade 6, and Grade 7 of the selected school completed anonymously.
The study revealed that poverty, family structure, and dwelling type did not have a significant impact on the learners of the selected school. The study did however reveal and confirmed what various other researchers have already found that sleep and nutrition did have an influence on academic performance.
It is recommended that specific guidelines should be provided to parents about economical lunchbox ideas. Parents should be supplied with lists of foods best to pack in lunchboxes and food that is not allowed. Schools should further monitor the food provided at tuck shops, as the food provided should be nutritious as well as sustain learners’ energy. Food high in saturated fats and sugar should not be allowed at school tuck shops. Children should also be educated about nutrition and better or alternative choices they can make.
Lunches that are supplied as part of the school nutrition program should be monitored to ensure that it is nutritious, low in sodium, and that a variety of fruit and vegetables are included in the meal.
Studies have concluded that children should sleep on average nine hours per night. Unfortunately, due to increase in academic pressure and work load, more learners go to bed later. It is therefore recommended that schools adhere to guidelines on the amount of homework given to learners daily. It is further recommended that parents should ensure that their children have a set routine regarding sleep patterns. The use of electronic equipment, such as television, computers, and cellular phones prior to sleeping time should be limited as it affects sleep.
Surprisingly, this study has also revealed that some of the data supplied to the school by the parents or guardians and the data that was obtained from the learners did not correlate. It is therefore recommended that schools should be more scrupulous with learner performance data as it could be a possible indicator of household problems or the quality of education. If it is found that the decline is due to quality of education, the school management team should act immediately to assist the necessary educators with the necessary skills to enable better quality of education.
A pro-active plan of action should be put in place by the school for those learners whose marks decreased. An educator could talk to the learner and the parents to try and determine the possible causes for the decrease in marks. Remedial classes or remedial exercises should be given to the learners to assist in the areas of need. In addition, if it is determined that the cause is due to home environment factors then necessary assistance should be provided either by the school or other entities. / Afrika Borwa e na le histori ya thuto ye telele gape ya mathata, go tloga go thuto ya pele ga bokoloni go ya go go fedišwa ga kgatelelo le go hwetša mafelelong thuto ya go lekana go bohle (Christie, 2006).
Educational Studies / M. Ed. Practice guidelines for social workers to foster and sustain family resilienceMoss, Susara Maria 12 1900 (has links)
Although the White Paper on Families (2013) stipulates that family resilience should be strengthened in family preservation services, no guidelines exist for social workers in the South African context to do so. A need for practice guidelines for social workers in rendering services to families to strengthen family resilience was identified. The following central research question was formulated: How and by doing what, can social workers foster and sustain family resilience?
The Intervention Design and Development (IDD) model of Rothman and Thomas (1994) was adapted for the study which included qualitative research to explore and describe the understanding, experiences and suggestions of social workers on family resilience for informing the family resilience intervention guidelines. Data was collected through focus- group and face-to-face semi-structured interviews with social workers employed by the Department of Social Development, and the NGOs from Gauteng, North West and Limpopo province. Tesch’s steps (cited in Creswell 2009:186) were used to analyse the data systematically and data was verified by Guba’s model (cited in Krefting 1991:214–222). Implementing steps 1–5 of phase 1, steps 1–3 of phase 2, step 2 of phase 3 and steps 1–3 of phase 4 of the IDD model, “Practice Guidelines for Social Workers to foster and sustain Family Resilience” (“The Guidelines”) were developed by translating the family resilience theory into practice to guide social workers to be able to develop and implement a family resilience intervention. The content of “The Guidelines” include an introduction containing the social work service delivery principles, the theoretical approaches of service delivery to families and the legislative and policy framework for services to families that would underpin a family resilience intervention. Section 1 of “The Guidelines” was developed and structured around the understanding of the family resilience construct and the family resilience process model on how family resilience operates. Section 2 of “The Guidelines” is presented in a question and answer format. This section provides practical guidelines on how to identify the target group for family resilience interventions, the reciprocal relationship between individual resilience and family resilience, family resilience interventions following the social work intervention process (i.e. intake, developmental assessment, a family developmental plan, and intervention strategies in accordance with the basket of services for families and monitoring and evaluation), how to integrate the domains of family resilience into the family resilience intervention, the need for education of both the social worker and client family on family resilience, the multi-dimensional aspects of the family requiring a multi-disciplinary approach and the role that the safety of family members play when rendering a family resilience intervention. / Social Work / D. The interaction between paediatric asthma and family functioningJones, Sylvia Lynn 01 January 2002 (has links)
The present study explored the interaction between paediatric asthma and family functioning, within the context of family systems theory. Eight families, each with an asthmatic child between the ages of 8 and 15, were included in this study. In each case, the parents were interviewed and completed a quantitative measure, the Family Assessment Device, The results indicated that each family has a unique way of functioning and of integrating the child's asthma into its lifestyle. Factors found to be involved in the mutual impact of paediatric asthma and family functioning were the size of the family, the severity of the child's condition, the ways in which the family copes with the stress of asthma, communication patterns between parents, compliance with family rules and boundaries, and the affective responsiveness and involvement of family members. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

The effect of a child with a cleft lip and palate on family functioningRich, Eileen Patricia 31 October 2003 (has links)
The present study explored the effect of the birth of a child with a cleft lip and palate on family
functioning within the context of family systems theory. Five families, each with a child who was
born with a cleft lip and palate, were included in the study. The five couples were all married
and they were the biological parents of their children whose ages ranged from two months to
five years. All five sets of parents were initially interviewed together and then had separate
individual interviews where the Family Assessment Measure-III was administered. The results
reflected each family's distinctive patterns of interaction and how they adapted to the birth of a
child with an orofacial cleft. Factors found to affect family functioning included: External support
systems, individual coping skills, family rules and boundaries, open communication and
cohesion among family members. / Psychology / M. A. (Psychology)

In a cross-sectional study of 202 postmenopausal and premenopausal women,the objectives of this study are to demonstrate a link between menopause and altered state of oral health.To evaluate the action of HRT on dental disease and finally on the tooth mortality. To assess and clarify the relationship between oral health and various general diseases and links between psyche and soma in postmenopausal women.Also discussed was the influence of bisphosphonates on the state of periodontal health.Finally,it was decided to place the study links oral menopausal status in a social and anthropological perspective.It appears then that menopause results in an altered state of oral health,(p = 0.003).HRT has a beneficial effect on the periodontal disease.The biological effects of diabetes are related to dental mortality (p = 0.050). This study emphasize the influence "per se" a bad oral health status for coronary artery disease (OR = 1.214).In postmenopausal women, stressful events, dry mouth, joint and bone diseases, hormonal deficiency are factors variously related dental mortality during this period. Moreover, it was found that women who have recently been treated for breast cancer developed more dental caries (p = 0.031 OR = 2.161).The study related the effects of bisphosphonates on the alteration of periodontal (p = 0.011), despite taking HRT (p = 0.020).In addition,background socio-economic favored contribute to the medicalization of physiological phenomenon. The fact of living alone would affect the loss of dental organs (p = 0.035). Finally, the regular practice of a sport improve the state of oral health (p = 0.036).

A psycho-educational programme to enhance the efficacy of parents of adolescentsKerr, Pamela Pearl 30 November 2008 (has links)
The aim of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a psycho-educational programme to enhance the efficacy of parents of adolescents. Thus, the research project can be identified as formative, evaluative research. To this end, an investigation was undertaken to determine how the efficacy of parents of adolescents could be enhanced through an understanding of:
* the life phase of adolescence;
* the life phase of parents of adolescents;
* the role of parents of adolescents;
* factors influencing the parenting of adolescents (e.g., generational effects and the influence of family structure on parenting);
* the challenges facing adolescents and their parents which may hamper parenting efficacy;
* factors which assist parents of adolescents to overcome challenges and improve their parenting efficacy;
* parenting skills which foster parenting efficacy; and
* the nature of a psycho-educational programme which could enhance the efficacy of parents of adolescents.
A literature study provided the theoretical background to the development of the above mentioned programme. In the next phase of the study, a psycho-educational programme was developed based on the literature review, a study of similar programmes and a pilot study conducted with parents. The programme aimed at helping parents to become aware of their parenting practices, to encourage them to increase knowledge and understanding of themselves and of their adolescent children and to develop personal strategies and skills to cope with parenting challenges. The programme was implemented with a group of 21 parents of adolescents (five fathers and sixteen mothers) living in George, South Africa during sessions held once per week over a period of six weeks. Participants were divided into three groups: six single parents; eight parents of nuclear families; and seven parents from blended-extended families. Data was collected qualitatively during each meeting. In addition, focus groups were conducted at the end of the six weeks. The findings indicated that the programme enhanced the efficacy of the participating parents in supporting the development of their adolescent children. / Educational Studies / D.Ed (Psychology of Education)

A Relationship Between the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test 2.0 Mathematics Scores and Racial and Ethnic Concentrations when Considering Socio-Economic Status, ESOL Student PopulationGalindo, Marilys 08 November 2013 (has links)
From the moment children are born, they begin a lifetime journey of learning about themselves and their surroundings. With the establishment of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, it mandates that all children receive a high-quality education in a positive school climate. Regardless of the school the child attends or the neighborhood in which the child lives, proper and quality education and resources must be provided and made available in order for the child to be academically successful.
The purpose of this ex post facto study was to investigate the relationship between the FCAT 2.0 mathematics scores of public middle school students in Miami-Dade County, Florida and the concentrations of a school’s racial and ethnic make-up (Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics), English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) population, socio-economic status (SES), and school climate. The research question of this study was: Is there a significant relationship between the FCAT 2.0 Mathematics scores and racial and ethnic concentration of public middle school students in Miami-Dade County when controlling SES, ESOL student population, and school climate for the 2010-2011 school year?
The instruments used to collect the data were the FCAT 2.0 and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) School Climate Survey. The study found that Economically Disadvantaged (SES) students socio-economic status had the strongest correlation with the FCAT 2.0 mathematics scores (r = -.830). The next strongest correlation was with the number of students who agreed that their school climate was positive and helped them learn (r = .741) and the third strongest correlation was a school percentage of White students (r = .668). The study concluded that the FCAT 2.0 mathematics scores of M-DCPS middle school students have a significant relationship with socio-economic status, school climate, and racial concentration.
