The use of fantasy in christian church sermons in the central Gauteng area

Thesis (MTech. degree in Drama)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2006. / This study aims to express the inherent connection between fantasy literature and the Christian church and how this connection can be employed in Christian church sermons. It is a utilitarian study, aimed to place the art of fantasy literature and the oral interpretation thereof in service of, in this case, the church. The twenty-first century church needs to find ways to minister effectively to the postmodern person. Fantasy literature can help fulfil some of these needs. Fantasy and Religion seems to have a natural connection. History shows that the earliest fantasies had religious, and specifically Christian, connotations. The inherent attributes of fantasy make it predisposed to spiritual meaning. The combination of these factors makes it a useful genre to help explain Biblical and Spiritual concepts. This dissertation aims to show how the two divergent ideas of faith and fantasy can be reconciled and how it is currently being done in churches in Gauteng. A multiple or collective case study design has been used with a purposive sampling method with a theoretical base. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted with pastors and ministers from a variety of churches, to discover to what extent fantasy is currently being used in church sermons in Gauteng.

Making sense of it all : mapping the current to the past

What are the representational differences between situations that do and do not map well onto previous experiences? This research offers some answers to this question by having participants compare two narratives that were either reality or fantasy-based. Fantasy-based narratives, with their deviations from reality, were considered similar to situations that do not map well onto previous experience. The concept of systematicity, where high-order relations constrain low-order relations was used to describe such situations (Bowdle & Gentner, 1997). Compared to a reality-based narrative, extra processing is required to maintain a systematic representation of a fantasy-based narrative. One can reduce the amount of processing needed by grounding that fantasy-based narrative in a reality-based or another fantasy-based narrative. Comparative judgments were used to measure processing differences. In three studies, participants read two narratives and then performed a series of comparative judgments derived from retrospective duration judgment (Block, 1992), event-structure perception (Zacks & Tversky, 2001), and structure-mapping theory (Gentner, 1983) research. For example, one of the comparative judgments adopted from structure-mapping theory was the rating of directional similarity, or the similarity rating of the second-read narrative relative to the first-read narrative. Directional similarity was proposed to increase as the amount of processing associated with maintaining a systematic representation of the first and second-read narrative decreased. For Studies 1A-E, the directional similarity was higher for the RealityFirst condition (reality read first) than the FantasyFirst condition (fantasy read first). These results are interpreted as indicated that the increase in directional similarity for the RealityFirst conditions was due to structure lending from the first-read reality-based narrative and that the decrease in directional similarity for the FantasyFirst conditions was due to representational disruption from the first-read fantasy-based narrative. Results also indicated that comparing two reality-based narratives (Studies 2A-B) was similar to comparing two fantasy-based narratives (Studies 3A-B) for the directional similarity and directional duration judgments, but differed for the listing of commonalities and differences and the segmentation of the narrative event structure. According to the systematicity principle (Gentner, 1989), people prefer mappings between two representations that form coherent and highly interconnected structures. The results from Studies 1A-E demonstrate a clear directional preference for the RealityFirst conditions. The results, therefore, indicate that it was more difficult to utilize the inherent structure of the narratives for the FantasyFirst conditions then the RealityFirst conditions. Comparing the results across the final set of studies, the increase in segmentation and increase in word count for the commonalities and differences were clear indications that participants still had difficulties in utilizing the structure of the narratives when both narratives being compared were fantasy-based (Studies 3A-B). In operationalizing systematicity with fantasy and reality-based narratives, I have been able to extend our understanding of how structure-lending can occur between these two narrative types. The results, therefore, extend our understanding of the structural alignment approach to narrative comparisons. But, since this research also involves the theoretical integration of the structure alignment approach (directional similarity and listing of commonalities and differences) with theories of time estimation (directional duration), event structure representation (segmentation), the basic findings herein should be applicable to comparisons ranging from auditory narrative structures to simple lexical units (e.g., unicorns vs. horses) to visual depicted objects (e.g., aliens vs. humans), even if the current set of studies described in this article involved only the comparison of written narrative structure. / text

Investigating the Effects of Fantasy Proneness and Instructions to Fantasize

<p>Fantasy prone individuals spend much of their time fantasizing, focusing on a rich internal world of imaginary people or stories, vivid memories, or dreams. Fantasy proneness has been linked to psychological distress and psychiatric disorders. However, few experimental studies have been conducted with fantasy prone individuals; therefore, little is known about the behavioral correlates of fantasy proneness. The current study investigated associations between self-reported fantasy proneness, as measured by a frequently used questionnaire, the CEQ, and behavior during a laboratory task of attention, the SART. A potential mood regulating function of fantasy also was explored. Results of the study support the assertion that fantasy proneness is associated with variations in behavior that can be observed in the context of the laboratory. Specifically, fantasy proneness correlated with fewer instances of on-task thought and more frequent instances of mind wandering without meta-awareness during the attention task. It also correlated with more task errors and higher levels of self-reported fantasy thought during the task (though not with higher levels of other types of off-task thought). Finally, fantasy thought was found to have a protective effect on positive affect during the mundane task. There was no relationship between fantasy thought and negative affect.</p> / Dissertation

本研究的主題是探討一種較為特殊的消費動機—以滿足幻想為出發點而產生的消費行為,稱之為「消費幻想」。此概念雖偶爾被應用於一些特殊產品的廣告或行銷手法,但過去並沒有相關的消費者行為研究給予完整深入的探討。 完整的消費幻想循環過程,起源於消費者內心未獲滿足的六大心因性需求(Murray, 1959) :與非生命相關事物、抱負權力相關、與人性能力相關、施虐受虐、與人際情感相關、及與社會交往相關等。當需求產生,消費者會因為緊張感而產生一股驅力,促使幻想產生,當單純幻想已無法滿足消費者內心的需求時,此時消費者就會進一步尋求能滿足幻想的消費行為,此時產生的消費行為便是消費幻想。此外,媒介或自我的誘發 (Belk, 2003),除了可以直接刺激幻想的產生,同時也具有提升幻想轉化成消費的能力。 本研究深度訪談20位年齡從21至28歲間之年輕學生,其中包含14位女性及6位男性,分別提供137及47個幻想內容。研究發現,三大幻想內容—角色人物、場景、及抽象感受—當中的對應角色及對應型場景,會刺激對應消費的產生;而特定身分、發展型場景,則多會刺激非對應消費的產生。但不管幻想的內容為何,經由四大構面的劃分,幻想的概念都能夠清楚地被劃分成不同的角度:以取得距離構面劃分幻想時,分為可取得性與不可取得性兩種角度;以與經驗關連性構面劃分幻想,分為經驗基礎與想像基礎兩種角度;以細膩程度構面劃分幻想,分為精細型與直觀型兩種角度;以持續程度構面劃分幻想,分為持續型與情境型兩種角度。 在回歸到幻想與消費之互動關係的探討時,本研究的結果指出,不論前次與這次的未滿足需求來源是否相同,只要是以相同的幻想內容來滿足需求,該幻想內容的強度便會增加,且驅動消費的能力也會提升,可見幻想對消費的影響力是相當龐大的。 本研究最後提出與幻想及消費幻想相關的19個命題,並建構出幻想與消費行為間之完整循環模型與分析架構。研究結果將可提供給行銷人員,一個運用消費幻想的觀念架構及應用觀念,並可供後續相關學術進一步發展消費幻想量表之參考。 / The study aims to investigate a special and unique consumption motivation – “Consumption Fantasy”, which is a fantasy-driven consumption behavior. Even though having been applied to a few product promotions or advertisements, the concept has rarely been explored in Consumer Behavior related researches so far. Complete process of consumption fantasy starts at six unfulfilled psychogenic needs: “Needs Associated with Inanimate Objects”, “Needs that Reflect Ambition, Power, Accomplishment, and Prestige”, “Needs Concerned with Human Power”, “Sado-masochistic Needs”, “Needs Concerned with Affection Between People”, and “Needs Concerned With Social Intercourse” (Murray, 1959). Then anxiety caused by unfulfilled needs will drive consumers to produce fantasies. When simply fantasizing cannot satisfy needs, consumers will even transform fantasy into real consumption. Besides, media seduction or self-seduction, the same as needs, have abilities to arouse fantasies and to encourage consumption fantasies. Twenty in-depth interviews were conducted. Fourteen female and six male interviewees whose ages range from 21 to 28 years old provided separately 137 and 47 fantasies. The results reveal that “Corresponding Role” and “Corresponding Scene” within three major fantasy contents: “Characters”, “Scenes”, and “Abstract Feelings” will stimulate corresponding consumption while “Specific Identity” and “Developing Scene” encourage non-corresponding consumption mostly. However, whatever the content is, fantasy can be segmented into different points of view by four dimensions: degree of “Distance and Inaccessibility”, degree of “Experience Relatedness”, degree of “Fineness”, and degree of “Persistency”. Fantasy is therefore can be divided into 8 viewpoints: “Accessible”, “Inaccessible”, “Experience-Based”, “Imagination-Based”, “Sophisticated”, “Intuitional”, “Persistent”, and “Situational”. Moreover, in consumption fantasy loop, no matter the former and current unfulfilled needs are the same or not, as long as they are satisfied by the same fantasy content, the fantasy strength will get stronger, and its capability of driving consumption will be enhanced, too. So far, we can be sure about how powerful fantasy is towards consumption. Nineteen propositions are stated. Complete model of fantasy and consumption is built, and analyzing framework of consumption fantasy is established firmly by the study. And the results will not only be useful for marketers in consumer-exploration, but offer valuable reference material for the academia.

It contains an analysis of the form, harmonic and melodic structures of each movement, which are presented as the main focus of this paper, and also an exposition of the opera´s excerpts used into the Fantasy. This analysis shows the jazzistcs features that the composer uses in the piece. As an aid to practice preparation, I include indications of fingerings. The work also includes a brief biography of the composer Frank Proto, the bassist François Rabbath and a synopsis of the opera Carmen, where there is a description of the scenes from the opera used into this fantasy. / A Carmen Fantasy para contrabaixo e piano: um estudo técnico e interpretativo. Uma pesquisa realizada acerca da obra escrita pelo compositor norte americano Frank Proto (1941). On several examples of movies it shows this phenomenon in contemporary production. The main part is an artistic concept based on a scenario "Killing on carnival row" by Trevise Beacham. The proposal solves its space from urban unit to particular design of exterior and interior.

This diploma thesis deals with the literary analysis of the theme of a labyrinth which appears in Anglo-American fantasy book series for young readers. The work is divided into two main parts. In the first, theoretical part, the author describes the main features of fantasy literature. The author also focuses on the assessment of the theme of a labyrinth in a wider literary-theoretical and historical context (mythology, Middle Ages literature, gothic novel, Romanticism, Modernism, Postmodernism). The second, practical part of the work, is represented by the author's literary analysis of the theme of a labyrinth appearing in these fantasy book series for young readers: Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Percy Jackson, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The analysis mainly concentrates on the motifs of the monster, the experience of getting lost, fight and hideout.
