Building Community Through Performance, Ritual and Play at the Texas Renaissance Festival

Speer, Cynthia Danielle 01 May 2013 (has links)
The overall goal of this project is to examine the community within the Texas Renaissance Festival of Plantersville, Texas and how the social arrangements and identities created in and manipulated by this community go beyond standard existing social conditions in modern society. I intend to investigate the use of performance as a tool for the negotiation of festival space and community building. Performance is not simply a product of the culture born here in the festival space. Instead, it is an agent of that culture in that it marks the boundary between the real and unreal, the festival and the everyday. Why are individuals drawn to the festival lifestyle? How does the structure of this community go beyond the surface sense of solidarity found in many other performance groups? What role does performance play in the cohesion of the festival community? I will explore these questions by looking at aspects of gender roles, language play, and the multivocality of performance through ethnographic study and applying concepts such as space negotiation, counter-publics, and ideas of performance, ritual and play to the nature of the renaissance festival community.

Falcón Bianchi, Leonardo, Berríos Inostroza, Óscar January 2017 (has links)

Ledarskapsmetoder och motivationsfaktorer : för volontärledare i festivalbranschen / Leadership methods – for volunteer leaders in the festival industry

Kurt, Azize, Mourad, Eva January 2016 (has links)
We have in this thesis investigated and discussed various theories of volunteer leadership andhow leaders succeed with volunteers in the festival industry. Through this, we have gathered adeeper understanding of how leaders in the festival industry are motivating volunteers. Thepurpose of the study was to investigate and gain a deeper understanding of leadership in thefestival industry and how volunteers are being motivated. We also wanted to research the kindof leadership that is applied and how effective it is. To achieve our ambition, we examinedthese problems in a qualitative method through semi-structured interviews. An amount of totalsixteen interviews, eight of the volunteers and six of volunteer leaders, were carried out, where all respondents interviewed were within cultural and music festivals. In the theoretical framework, we used theories of leadership: transactional, transformative, charismatic and McGregor's theories of X and Y. We also used the motivation theories ofMcClelland's theory of needs and Maslow's hierarchy of needs. These theories along with thecollection of empirical data were the basis for the interpretation of the conclusion. The conclusion of the study resulted in the finding of factors that motivate festival volunteers:to feel social interactions, personal development, to fill their resume or work experience andalso to create a network of contacts. An ideal leader should be committed, responsive, havegreat trust to the volunteers and allow them to shape and produce their job assignments but atthe same time have a determined character to avoid an overly casual work environment.

THE INFLUENCE OF MUSIC FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE ON DESTINATION IMAGE AND FESTIVAL IMAGE.pdf

Matthew Corey Mosley (7027583) 15 August 2019 (has links)

The purpose of this study is to explore how attending a blues music festival can influence an attendees image of the destination, the image of the festival and their intention to return. Predicting attendee behavior intentions have been a constant focus of academics and festival organizers. It has been shown that the festival environment (venue and facilities) are influential, that positive interactions with festival staff and vendors affect attendee satisfaction and depending on the study the aspect surrounding the musical performance can influence future behavior. This study has incorporated an area previously found to be important to attendee satisfaction but so far has not been studied with the other aspects of how a festival performs. This study investigated the influence of those four factors (venue, services, core product and safety) on attendees’ perception of their satisfaction with the festival and the subsequent influence on their image of the destination and festival.
