Contested heritage : examining relations between contemporary pagan groups and the archaeological and heritage professions in Britain

Rathouse, William January 2013 (has links)
This thesis uses ethnographic field research and literature analysis to examine the sometimes fraught interactions and relationships between the archaeologists and heritage managers who manage and interpret the material remains of Britain’s ancient past and contemporary Pagan groups to whom such remains are sacred. It provides a description of contestation of sites and human corporeal remains followed by a detailed analysis of the reasons presented in the discourse of contestation and the underlying attitudes behind the issues. The Thesis concludes with some thoughts on how heritage managers and archaeologists may better manage their interactions with the Pagan community in the future.

A Practical, Systematic Approach to Understanding Cost of Quality: A Field Study

Czuchry, Andrew J., Yasin, Mahmoud M., Little, Gregory S. 01 January 1999 (has links)
Presents a practical conceptual framework designed to determine the cost of quality based on nonconformance to a set of quality standards. This framework was implemented in a manufacturing environment. It utilizes an "open" system architecture which stresses a customer orientation. In this context, customer influence determines what is important in terms of quality. Standards are established for these elements which are used to gauge the performance and efficiency of the manufacturing process. Poor performance is then quantified in terms of relevant costs. The framework is designed to go beyond conventional cost of quality and nonconformance models, as it offers a solution path which utilizes employees to improve areas of nonconformance. Cultural, informational and technical organizational requirements needed to implement the framework advocated here are outlined.

Ideofony v hindštině / Hindi Ideophones

Diatka, Vojtěch January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores ideophones in Hindi. Ideophones are "marked words that depict sensory imagery" (Dingemnase 2011:25). It focuses on four main topics represented by four main sections. (A) It defines ideophone and offers some new perspective on this linguistic phenomenon. (B) It lists some common features of ideophones in Hindi which set them apart from the rest of the vocabulary. (C) This thesis describes first field research of ideophones. Its main goal was to find out whether speakers of Hindi actively use it or not. (D) Last part of this thesis focuses on the most interesting topic connected to ideophones - on their semantics. It is analyzed from the point of view of the Frame Semantics and the new Vivid sensation frame is suggested to capture ideophonic meanings. Important part of this thesis is ideophone list which is first of its kind.

Refugees and the state in Kenya : the politics of identity, rights and displacement

Mwangi, Annabel Namik January 2006 (has links)
The thesis provides an empirical basis for understanding state behaviour towards refugees by focusing on refugees in Kakuma Camp, Kenya. It compares and contrasts the experiences of encamped refugees with the experiences of Kenyans outside the camp, stressing the need to understand the socio-political context within which displacement and protection occurs. The study describes the processes of state formation in Kenya and the evolution of particular understandings of citizenship and membership. It argues that the state in Africa has, inherent within its foundations, exclusionary and discriminatory practices, which affect both citizens and noncitizens. These result in multiple sites of inclusion and exclusion based on membership of a variety of shifting groups, categories and networks. This observation suggests the need to re-evaluate our understanding of the dominant analytical concepts of 'state' as 'protector' and 'citizen' as 'insider' thus far used to address the issue of entitlement to rights, around which the refugee regime has been constructed. The thesis also underscores the importance of breaking out of the 'territorial trap', calling attention to the growing importance of international and transnational actors in defining the actions of the state and the direction of domestic policy. It points out that as refugees are progressively excluded from the realm of the nation-state, they increasingly turn to the international community, represented by international humanitarian actors, for recognition. This contributes to the marginalisation of the state in the management of refugee affairs, which has a negative impact both on the protection of refugee rights and the credibility of the state in the eyes of its citizens. In response to this development, the thesis questions the legitimacy and accountability of international humanitarian actors and emphasises the importance of bringing the state back into the centre of the refugee protection regime.

Uneasy Tensions in Health Care Delivery in a Rural Appalachian Coal Mining Community: Envisioning Alternative Solutions

Lee, Renee Gravios 28 June 1996 (has links)
Research consistently supports that some segments of society are at considerably higher risk for illness and death than the national average. While the existence and extent of poor health outcomes for these "vulnerable populations" are well documented, less research attempts to explain why such inequities persist and how they might be resolved. Thus, many vulnerable individuals fail to get adequate health care. How can health care delivery be improved to better serve those consumers most at risk of poor health? Addressing this issue requires an in-depth understanding of the unique health and social needs of vulnerable consumers and how these needs are being met (or not met) by the health care industry. Based on field research using a variety of methods, this study examined health care delivery to one at-risk population, women in a rural Appalachian coal mining community, with the ultimate goal of envisioning service design and distribution strategies that might better serve disadvantaged populations. Consistent with the change-oriented goal of this research, a feminist approach guided this study. Women's everyday experiences in managing their health needs were explored through an analysis of their health care stories. Health care providers were also interviewed in order to explore both sides of the service encounter dyad. The voices of the women and the providers reveal uneasy tensions in health care delivery and illuminate why the current system does not meet the actual health care needs of the women or their community. A variety of solutions are offered to improve health care delivery. / Ph. D.

Rozšíření kočky divoké (Felis silvestris) v ČR / geomatické modelování a ekologický přístup / Distribution of wildcat (Felis silvestris) in Czech Republic / geomatic modelling and ecological approach

Pospíšková, Jana January 2015 (has links)
Population of the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) are slowly recovering after a severe decline in the 18th century. The wildcat was a rare species already on the beginning of 19th century on the territory of Czech Republic. During the 20th century the species was considered to be extinct and the scarce records to be individuals dispersed from Carpathian or West-European population. Furthermore there was lack of evidence to this observations. With the expansion of photo monitoring methods, there comes pictures of wildcats from the Beskid Mountains, Bohemian Forest, The upper Palatine Forest and Doupov mountains. After more than 60 years there is finely a proof for the presence of wildcats in Czech Republic. To understand its space requirements and dispersion context, and to know if there is a place for wildcats to live in Czech Republic, we made a habitat model in ArcGIS. This rule-based model works with attributes like land cover type, duration of snow cover, aspect and the vertical heterogeneity of terrain. The model was applied also for Slovakia, because the evaluation data only comes from Slovakia. We found out that the occurence of wildcats in the model territory relate to broad-leaf forests, duration of snow cover (>20cm) not exceeding 50 days and the southern exposure. In Czech Republic there is...

Revitalizace bretonštiny (vztah jazyka a identity u nové generace bretonsky mluvících) / The revitalisation of the Breton

Třesohlavá, Anna January 2012 (has links)
The present study deals with the current phenomenon of the revitalisation of the Breton language. The work is divided into three parts. The first presents a theoretical basis to the following parts. The second is devoted to Breton in a larger context and it contains the following: the language policy in France, information about Brittany and its languages, and the evolution of using the Breton. The core of the work is the last part, which is based on an ethnological field research that the author carried out in the years 2008 and 2011 among students of Breton at the university of Rennes 2. Its aim is to illustrate the studied phenomenon by the concete stories of his actors. One of its main results is the confirmation of the hypothesis about the symbolic importance of Breton as one of the basic pillars of the Breton identity. The sources of this study are, apart from the research mentioned above, French, Czech and English secondary resources.

Ensino e aprendizagem de estatística no contexto do Ensino Médio Politécnico pelo desenvolvimento de uma pesquisa de campo

Müller, Daniel Ânderson January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to develop topics of Statistics from the accomplishment of a practical activity of collection and real data analysis, emphasizing critical thinking, selforganization, collective and collaborative efforts of students. The participant group consisted of seventeen students of the second year High School (evening classes in a Polytechnic public school) in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul. The activity was carried out while the students were taking the subject Integrated Seminar. As a group, everyone planned and did field research focusing on themes that had been suggested by the students themselves. This activity stands out because the data collected was based on a random sample of the residents of the town. So that the interviews with the residents could be done, the students needed to work after their school schedule, facing some adverse situations, which shows remarkable engagement of the group. The field survey results were compiled in spreadsheets and analyzed by the students themselves in discussions in the classroom. Later, those considered most relevant results were summarized in graphs and presented to the school community. The qualitative analysis of students' answers to specific questions, based on the Collective Subject Discourse methodology, revealed proper understanding of statistical concepts, and also showed the satisfaction of students to be part of the process. Therefore, the activity has been a success, being a viable alternative to promote the Statistical Learning in Elementary and High School. At the end of the research, an educational product that consists of a basic roadmap for conducting similar work has been presented.

Moonlight in Miami: A Field Study of Human-Robot Interaction in the Context of an Urban Search and Rescue Disaster Response Training Exercise

Burke, Jennifer L 08 September 2004 (has links)
This study explores human-robot interaction during a 16-hour high-fidelity Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) disaster response drill with teleoperated robots. Situation awareness and team interaction were examined using communication analysis. Operators (n=5) sought assistance from team members to compensate for difficulties building or maintaining situation awareness. Operator-team member communication focused on relating what was seen through the robot's eye view with prior knowledge and planning search strategies. Results suggest operators need a new cognitive mental model to filter and comprehend data provided by the robot, and that robot-assisted search is a team task rather than an individual one. USAR technical search teams need a new shared mental model of robot-assisted search in order to coordinate activities effectively.
