Art of Persuasion in English and Lithuanian Political Rhetoric / Įtikinėjimo menas anglų ir lietuvių kalbų politinėje retorikoje

The thesis concerns translation issues in Lithuanian translations of English rhetorical figures (anaphora and antithesis) in political speeches delivered by different politicians. Seven political speeches in English and their Lithuanian translations were analyzed from the perspective of translation strategies and translation problems. The study uses terms for translation strategies developed by Devies’ in order to comment on Lithuanian translations of English political speeches. In order to carry out the analysis of the chosen political speeches comparative as well as contrastive analysis were chosen. Firs, the original extract and its translation were compared taking into consideration the issues of translation strategies that have been used in the process of translating. Second, the original extract and its translation were contrasted in order to notice how and why some aspects in the translation have been changed. The main goal of the present paper is to see the differences and similarities of the two languages when dealing with political rhetoric. Moreover, it is extremely important to examine persuasive tools that are used most frequently in political rhetoric both in English and in Lithuanian. The hypothesis of the paper is the following: as the two languages structurally are very different, translations of rhetorical figures in English political texts will contain many structural and stylistic deviations. [to full text] / Šis baigiamasis darbas yra susijęs su vertimo aspektais, kai retorinės figūros (anafora ir antitezė), skirtingų politikų panaudotos angliškose politinėse kalbose, verčiamos į lietuvių kalbą. Atkreipiant dėmesį į vertimo strategijas ir vertimo problemas buvo išanalizuotos septynios angliškos politinės kalbos ir jų lietuviski vertimai. Siekiant aptarti lietuviškus angliškų politinių kalbų vertimus darbe vartojami Davies vertimo strategijų terminai. Siekiant atlikti politinių kalbų analizę buvo pasirinkti lyginamasis ir kontrastinis analizės būdai. Pirmiausia, buvo lyginama originalo ištrauka su jos lietuvišku atitikmeniu, atsižvelgiant į vertimo strategijas, kurios buvo panaudotos vertimo metu. Antra, originalo ištrauka ir jos lietuviška atitikmuo buvo supriešpriešinami tam, kad būtų įmanoma įžvelgti kaip ir kodėl tam tikri aspektai vertimo metu buvo pakeisti. Pagrindinis šio darbo tikslas yra įžvelgti dviejų kalbų panašumus ir skirtumus būtent politinėje retorikoje. Taip pat labai svarbu išanalizuoti įtikinėjimo priemones, kurios dažniausiai naudojamos tiek anglų tiek lietuvių politinėje retorikoje. Disertacijos hipotezė yra tokia: kadangi nagrinėjamos kalbos struktūriškai yra labai skirtingos, retorinių figūrų vertimas iš angliškų politinių kalbų į lietuviškas bus su stipriais struktūriniais ir stilistiniais nukrypimais. Desiring Machinations of Matertekhnologi is an Individualized Multidisciplinary thesis that synthesizes feminist frameworks with new media art to investigate the mediated body in relation to communications technology. The thesis illustrates contemporary, twenty-first century artists working with feminist strategies, the body, performance and technological media. Theoretical discussions are developed that imagine or suggest new forms of subjectivity that could be experienced through artistic appropriation of communicative, networked and technological media. Cette étude sociocritique du professeur de lettres fictif dans le roman québécois de 1995 à 2010 est guidée par les travaux d’André Belleau (Le Romancier fictif), de Roseline Tremblay (L'Écrivain imaginaire) et du Groupe de recherche sur les médiations littéraires et les institutions (Fictions du champ littéraire) portant sur la figuration de l’écrivain. Thin films for thermoeletric applications

Global warming and developments of alternative energy technologies have become important issues nowadays. Subsequently, the concept of energy harvesting is rising because of its ability of transferring waste energy into usable energy. Thermoelectric devices play a role in this field since there is tremendous waste heat existing in our lives, such as heat from engines, generators, stoves, computers, etc. Thermoelectric devices can extract the waste heat and turn them into electricity. Moreover, the reverse thermoelectric phenomenon has the function of cooling which can be applied to refrigerator or heat dissipation for electronic devices. However, the energy conversion efficiency is still low comparing to other energy technologies. The efficiency is judged by thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT), defined by Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. In order to improve ZT, thin film materials are good candidates because of their structural effects on altering ZT.    Ca3Co4O9 thin films grown by reactive radio frequency magnetron sputtering followed by post-annealing process is studied in this thesis. Structural properties of the films with the evolution of elemental ratio (Ca/Co) of calcium and cobalt have been investigated. For the investigations, three samples having elemental ratio 0.82, 0.72, and 0.66 for sample CCO1, CCO2 and COO3, respectively, have been prepared. Structural properties of the films have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) θ-2θ and pole figure analyses. Surface morphology of the films has been investigated by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analyses. The highly oriented and phase pure epitaxial Ca3Co4O9 thin films were obtained in the end.   Mixing of ScN and CrN to obtain ScxCr1-xN solid solution thin films by DC magnetron sputtering is the other task in this thesis. Growth of ScN and CrN thin films were studied first in order to get the best mixed growth conditions. The phase shifts between ScN (111) and CrN (111) peaks were observed in mixed growth films by XRD θ-2θ measurements, indicating the formation of ScxCr1-xN. Surface morphology of the films were investigated by SEM. The (111)-oriented ScxCr1-xN thin films with decent surface smoothness grown by DC magnetron sputtering at 600 °C in pure nitrogen with bias were developed.

La Mémoire de l’oubli. La tragédie française entre 1629 à 1653 / The Memory of oblivion, French Tragedies (1629-1653)

Henri IV met fin aux guerres civiles de religion en 1598 en décrétant la mémoire des troubles « éteinte et assoupie, comme de chose non advenue ». Comment se positionne le théâtre français par rapport à cette politique d’oubli, quel espace mémoriel offre-t-il ? Nous considérons la tragédie qui s’écrit entre 1629, fin officielle des guerres civiles et date de la dernière tragédie d’actualité, et 1653, fin de la Fronde et d’une nouvelle menace de division intérieure. La tragédie semble se détourner d’une actualité trop déchirante, en ce sens elle oublie, mais elle se trouve pourtant travaillée par cet oublié. En partant du plus visible : la mise en scène des princes cléments, nous montrons que cette forme d’oubli officiel et volontaire est très représentée sur la scène tragique. Mais l’oublié est aussi ce qui travaille les tragédies dans la représentation qu’elles offrent du conflit familial qui fournit bon nombre des sujets tragiques du temps. La tragédie fait donc affleurer le présent du passé, la mémoire de la division, par le détour allégorique. À un théâtre mélancolique où le passé pèse sur le présent de tout son poids s’oppose un théâtre de relance historique dans lequel peut s’ouvrir un avenir nouveau. Enfin, l’oubli apparaît dans ces années de théorisation dramatique comme un idéal pour le spectateur absorbé dans le spectacle, et comme une menace quand il conduit à l’oubli de soi chez certains comédiens ou spectateurs naïfs. L’oubli, dans son équivocité fondamentale, permet donc d’articuler théorie politique, dramatique et images scéniques, dans un premier dix-septième siècle où l’on ne cesse de penser la violence qui menace le lien et la communauté au risque de la division. / Henry the 4th ends the religious civil wars in 1598 by ordaining that the remembrance of troubles is « extinguished and abated, like something that did not occur ». How does French drama stand in relation with this politics of oblivion ? What kind of memorial space does it open ? We consider tragedies written between 1629, official end of the troubles and date of publication of the last usual times tragedy, and 1653, end of a new internal division threat embodied by the Fronde. In appearance, tragedy seems to forget a harrowing recent past by turning away from it, but it is simultaneously deeply influenced by what has been forgotten. By starting with what is most visible, the staging of merciful princes, we demonstrate that this official and voluntary oblivion is very much represented on the tragic stage. But forgetfulness is also influencing tragedies in their displaying of family feuds, a frequent tragic topic of these times. Tragedy thus makes surface the present of the past, the memory of division, through allegoric detours. A double-face drama emerges : one of melancholy in which past weighs on present, one of historical reset with an ouverture for renascent prospects. Last, in these years of dramatic theorization, forgetfulness appears to be, for a spectator absorbed by the play, an ideal, as well as it can drag the most naive of them and some comedians into forgetting about their selves in denial of reality and confusion with fiction. The fundamental ambiguity of forgetfulness enables to articulate political theory, drama and staging, in a 17th century where violence is thought to threaten the community with division.

To meet these purposes, a clinical investigation studying three cases of sheltered children s mothers was done. Two instruments were used: a) Interview Script Theme scripts to be covered during one or more non-directive interviews of clinical scope, inorder to help investigate the psychodynamics of these mothers. b) Drawings and Storytelling Procedure Projective technique which associates the use of drawings to stories as a mean of exploring the contents of personality freely and dynamically. This technique allows the study of formal and structural characteristics of the personality, as it has the singularity of facilitating the expression of unconscious aspects related to present anguishes points, differing focus, and emerging disorders. These procedures were used inside the institution (shelter) in which the children lived. The main results common to the three cases were: Ambiguity and Development Impendings - the first interviewed mother attacks at the same time the mother that left her (the biological mother and the adoptive mother), in search of na idealized mother. This ambiguity impedes her development. The same attempt of idealisation was observed on the second interviewed mother. She shows embarassement in accepting her life and can´t realize that the approaching of her mother is because of an acquired disease and not for continence. The third and last interviewed mother shows persecutive contents when facing the sheltering of her children and embarassement to feel greatful. The prevailing mechanisms that appear on the three cases are: Idealization and regression to primitive stages. Depression, difficulty to elaborate the depressive position are also observed. These mothers can´t continuously experience the psychic reality that would imply on the elaboration of depressive position, since they can´t do it, though they attempt to compare between the internal and external worlds, this would lead them to a better understanding of the similarities and differences, so the parents figure (mainly the mother's) becomes divided between terrifying and idealised, but the prevailing mechanisms are their fantasies that provide idealisation; massive projective identification. The persecution and guilty seem to indicate at the same time the depression that can be so strong that leads to the enhancement of these feelings. There´s the presence of envy that also enhances the persecution anguishes, requiring defense mechanisms that violates the psychic functions.(AU) / Este estudo teve como objetivos investigar aspectos da dinâmica intrapsíquica de mães de crianças institucionalizadas em abrigo por ordem judicial, e identificar recursos defensivos utilizados por essas mães. Para atingir estes objetivos, realizou-se uma investigação clínica com estudo de três casos de mães de crianças abrigadas. Foram utilizados dois instrumentos: a) Roteiro de Entrevista roteiro de temas a serem abordados em uma ou mais entrevistas não diretivas de cunho clínico, a fim de auxiliar na investigação da psicodinâmica destas mães. b) Procedimento de Desenho Estória com Tema técnica projetiva que associa o uso de desenhos com estórias, como forma de explorar livre e dinamicamente os conteúdos da personalidade. A técnica permite o estudo das características formais e estruturais da personalidade, pois tem a particularidade de facilitar a expressão de aspectos inconscientes relacionados a pontos de angústias presentes, focos conflituosos e perturbações emergentes. Estes procedimentos foram realizados nas dependências da instituição (abrigo) onde as crianças estavam hospedadas. Os principais resultados comuns aos três casos foram: Ambigüidade e os Impeditivos de Crescimento a primeira mãe entrevistada ao mesmo tempo ataca a mãe que a abandona (mãe biológica e a mãe adotiva), em busca de uma mãe idealizada. Essa ambigüidade a impede de crescer. Nota-se a mesma tentativa de idealização na segunda mãe estudada que demonstra dificuldade em aceitar a atual situação em que vive e não consegue perceber que a aproximação de sua mãe é por causa da doença que ela adquiriu e não por continência. A terceira e última mãe entrevistada demonstra conteúdos persecutórios diante do abrigamento dos filhos e dificuldade de sentir gratidão. Os mecanismos predominantes que aparecem nos três casos são os de: idealização e regressão a estágios primitivos. Nota-se ainda, depressão, dificuldade de elaboração da posição depressiva. Estas mães não conseguem vivenciar continuamente a realidade psíquica, que implicaria na elaboração da posição depressiva, pois não conseguem fazer, ainda que tentem, uma comparação entre os mundos interno e externo, o que as levariam à uma melhor compreensão das semelhanças e diferenças. De modo que, a figura dos pais (principalmente da mãe) fica cindida entre aterrorizante e idealizada, porém os mecanismos predominantes são suas fantasias que propiciam idealização; identificação projetiva maciça. A persecutoriedade e a culpa, ao mesmo tempo parecem indicar a depressão que pode ser tão forte que levam à intensificação destes sentimentos. Há a presença da inveja que também intensifica as angústias persecutórias, requerendo mecanismos de defesa que violentam as funções psíquicas.(AU)

There were two stages of work: first, the 47 teens participated in a semistructured interview; in the second, ten of these adolescents were selected and submitted to a projective tool to research aspects of personality: the "Drawing the Human Figure" of Machower, adapted by Van Kolck (1956; 1984). The theoretical discussion of the results was based on a post-Freudian psychoanalytic approach to understanding both adolescence as a phase of human development as the antisocial behavior. The study results confirmed the arising theory of psychological literature that addresses common patterns during adolescence, a phase in which there is a complex of individual factors of biological maturity associated with social / cultural environment and, in turn, establish relations with the psychological or mental bodies of the subject along with the specific characteristics of each individual. In search of understanding of these common sample of adolescent offenders used in this study patterns, psychosocial, cultural and demographic data were collected; psychosocial aspects and psychodynamic aspects and personality characteristics. In conclusion, the study highlighted the adolescent problematic in conflict with the law, associated with social, mental health, and the psychic development, signaling the need for focused Psychoprophylactic actions for child population, young family groups and the community representing its surroundings / Para atingir os objetivos propostos, ou seja, levantar e descrever indicadores socioculturais de uma amostra de adolescentes em cumprimento de medida socioeducativa, e descrever características psicológicas e de personalidade dos adolescentes infratores, num estudo que pesquisou adolescentes em cumprimento de medida socioeducativa. O trabalho foi realizado em duas as etapas: na primeira, os 47 adolescentes participaram de uma entrevista semidirigida; na segunda, dez desses adolescentes foram selecionados e submetidos a um instrumento projetivo para investigação de aspectos da personalidade: o “desenho da Figura Humana” de Machower, adaptado por Van Kolck (1956; 1984). A discussão teórica dos resultados baseou-se numa abordagem psicanalítica pós-freudiana para a compreensão da adolescência tanto como fase do desenvolvimento humano como dos comportamentos antissociais. Os resultados do estudo corroboraram a teoria advinda da literatura psicológica que aborda padrões comuns no período da adolescência, fase em que ocorre um complexo de fatores individuais da maturidade biológica associados ao meio social/cultural e que, por sua vez, estabelecem relações com as instâncias psicológicas ou psíquicas do sujeito junto com as características específicas de cada indivíduo. Na busca da compreensão desses padrões comuns da amostra dos adolescentes infratores utilizados no presente estudo, foram levantados dados do perfil psicossocial, cultural e demográfico; dos aspectos psicossociais e aspectos psicodinâmicos e de características de personalidade. A título de conclusão, o estudo destacou a problemática do adolescente em conflito com a lei, associada às questões sociais, de saúde mental, além do desenvolvimento psíquico, sinalizando a necessidade de ações psicoprofiláticas voltadas para população infantil, jovem, agrupamentos familiares e para a comunidade que representa seu entorno.
