Names, Violence, and the African American Vernacular in Richard Wright's The Outsider

Bailly, Sarah 15 May 2009 (has links)
An analysis of the names and violence in Richard Wright's The Outsider reveals Wright's aesthetic program for the novel. Wright's recurring themes and the meanings of the name and aliases of his protagonist are indicative of African American vernacular tradition. Despite Wright's physical distance from African American life in the United States at the time of the novel's writing, he still conveys a strong connection to the African American experience, linking that experience with the suffering of all oppressed people. By using the idea of double-consciousness and various forms of signification, including masking, naming, and improvisation, Wright locates his work within the African American folk tradition and celebrates the freedom and subversive nature of African American expression.

Estudo experimental da otimização em sistemas de mamografia digital CR e DR / Experimental study of optimization in CR and DR digital mammography systems

Perez, Alessandra Maia Marques Martinez 29 January 2015 (has links)
The recent introduction and intense advance of digital mammography in Brazil as a tool in breast cancer screening and the evidences of new optimization conditions when compared to conventional mammography (screen-film) require adding and studying novel quality parameters, as well as revisiting optimization conditions. The objective of this work was to determine optimized radiographic technique for two detection systems (CR and DR) in use in three mammography units: Mammomat 3000 Nova (Siemens), Senographe DMR (GE) and Senographe 2000D (GE). Optimization was conducted for various combinations of technique factors and breast phantom configurations, such as kilovoltage settings (26 to 32 kV), target/filter combinations (Mo/Mo, Mo/Rh and Rh/Rh), breast equivalent material in various thicknesses (2 to 8 cm) and simulated mass and calcification lesions, using a figure of merit (FOM) as a parameter. When using anode/filter combination which generates higher energy spectra in each equipment, it was verified that higher FOM values were achieved for all voltages and phantom thicknesses, due to dose reduction. Anode/filter combinations which led to those results were Mo/Rh for Siemens equipment and Rh/Rh for both GE equipments, corresponding to the higher energy spectra in each unity. It was also observed an increasing tendency of kV which maximizes FOM with the increase of thickness.

Implementação computacional de um novo método matricial para a determinação de fases em cristalografia / Computational implementation of a new matricial method for phase determination in crystallography

Castellano, Gabriela 25 March 1994 (has links)
Finalmente, é desenvolvida a álgebra correspondente ao cálculo do gradiente da função R, indicando a direção de trabalhos futuros / A new criterion, proposed by Jorge Navaza from theoretical considerations to solve the Phase Problem, is numerically tested. The criterion is based on the atomicity property of the electron density function, generalizing previous results by Goedkoop. The Phase Problem is theoretically solved by the minimization of a function, R, which is formed from the sum of the smallest eigenvalues of a matrix Q, constructed from the set of all observed structure factors. The sought set of phases is that which minimizes R. Because the matrix Q depends in a relatively complex fashion on the space group of the crystal, group theory is employed to reduce the order of Q. The algorithm and computational implementation for the calculation of R, together with numerical tests which demonstrate the usefulness of Navaza´s criterion, are described in detail. As a corollary, that might turn out to be of a practical importance, it is shown that the minimum value of the function R can be used as a novel Figure of Merit in the classical Multisolution Direct Methods. Finally, the rather complex algebra necessary for the calculation of the gradient of the function R is developed, indicating also the possible trends for future work

Gustave Flaubert: uma literatura, uma encenação da leitura / Gustave Flaubert: a literature, a staging of the reading

Santos, Fernanda Ferreira dos 27 April 2018 (has links)
This Doctoral Thesis aims to observe the staging of the reading act in the Gustave Flauberts Bouvard and Pécuchet. It is the direct result of my Master Dissertation, in which I investigated the problems of writing, so that I could reach the reading. For this, I rely not only on the Bouvard and Pécuchet, but also on other Flauberts works and correspondence, a vast material to analyse a little of what Flaubert could be as a writer, an author, and a reader, in order to note that both authorship and reading instances seemed to be already diluted in the French writer. First, I read Flaubert and his work in the light of the Reception Aesthetics, seeking to analyse the problem of reading as an effect. Second, I observed that the reading would be more for a procedure, and not an effect, so I based on Marielle Macés and Jacques Rancières works, in order to observe reading as a figure. Finally, I based on José-Luis Diaz studies on romantic author scenography aiming at proposing a reading scenography too, and how Bouvard and Pécuchet and, to a certain extent, Flaubert as well, end up staging the \"reading\" figure.

Projekce narušené komunikační schopnosti do dětské kresby / Projection of disrupted communication ability in children's drawing

Zderadičková, Barbora January 2018 (has links)
The master thesis is focused on a special pedagogical topic and observes how disrupted communication impacts on children's drawing. The thesis consists of two parts - theoretical and practical part. The first one is about the theoretical findings, which proceed from the professional literature. There are the parts here regarding communication, speech and language and the disrupted communication ability - most concentrated on a question of developmental dysphasia. The close attention has been paid to children in their younger school age, their communication abilities, their drawing ability and graphomotor activity. The practical part of this master thesis has been formed by a qualitative survey realized with children at elementary schools and their home environment. Different methods and techniques - interviews, observation, case interpretation and analysis of activity results. The main objective of this thesis is to to find out and to describe - how the disrupted communication ability of children - specifically developmental dysphasia is projected into children drawing. The corresponding demonstration has been based on a comparison between drawings of pupils with communication problems and drawings of children without any communication problems. KEYWORDS Graphomotorics, communication, drawing,...

Figure d’auteur et modernisation du discours des sujets exclus : la trajectoire des écrivains Gloria Stolk et Juan Rulfo / The Figure of the Author and Modernization of the discourse of excluded subjects : the Trajectory of Gloria Stolk and Juan Rulfo

Vivas Lacour, Carmen 01 February 2018 (has links)
This research centers its study in how the Latin-American literature in the 50’s became a place of alternative symbolic creation. The modernization project in Latin-America resulted in the questioning of the subject representation. Some speeches intended to combine minorities, like women and peasants. The literary field has thus opened space for individuals willing to participate in the development of new project of nation, where diversity would be accepted. From this perspective, we are interested in the work of the Venezuelan writer Gloria Stolk, and Mexican Juan Rulfo. During the 50’s, they were able to establish a new space that diversify and transform the traditional role of the author. The analysis in this study considers two dimensions: the speeches and the profiles of these two authors. On one side they developed fiction around characters of their interest, on the other side they emerged as authors with multiple roles

Realismo desfigurado : Dom Casmurro entre o preciso e o impreciso

Brum, Fernando Machado January 2016 (has links)
In Machado de Assis work, the representation of reality is disfigured through the literary form determined by the precision vs. imprecision binomial. Such disfiguration emerges from the representation of the serious and tragic everyday (constitutive elements of Modern Realism, according to Erich Auerbach), which in Brazil is affected by the miscellany of political, economic and religious perceptions, causing an absence of a clear social positioning. The current work intends to analyze the novel Dom Casmurro (story that has a committed narrator both for the juridical speech and the religious one) making use of the method Auerbach developed to comprehend the form the human condition is present through time, specially in the works Figura (1944) and Mimesis (1946), in order to demonstrate the representation of reality in a peripheral country ruled by archaic values, generating the break of seriousness and the dismissal of realist precision.
