The potential of fisheries resources is the proposal for a study of this dissertation that addresses the issue by means of two concepts: a conceptual and other practice, taking as the study of Reserve for Sustainable Development of the Piranha s Lake, located in the city of Manacapuru, inside the State of Amazonas. The general objective of this dissertation was to analyze the potential of fisheries resources in the Sustainable Development Reserve of the Piranha, with a view to sustainable management. This required identifying the economic potential of sustainable fisheries for the Piranha RDS; tracing the socio economic profile of the population living in the RDS and their vision of the Piranha on fisheries resources available in reserve. Regarding the methodological procedures, it is a literature search and a case study. The literature search was carried out taking up work as the basis of scientific character, published and catalogued through occasional publications, newspapers, magazines, books, monographs and Internet s sites. Already the case study, which involved a documentary research and a search of field, was held in the RDS of the Piranha. The subjects of research the residents of the RDS of the Piranha. In the reserve live about 66 families. In the sample search involving 66 heads of family, of which a questionnaire was administered. At the end of the survey concluded that fish, with a view to sustainable management, is as viable economic alternative to the Reserve for Sustainable Development of Piranha. The fish is a source of food, income and employment and fish stocks have the potential for economic sustainability of local residents in the Reserve for Sustainable Development of the Piranha. Fish farming is a viable economic alternative to the reserve, as if to meet requirements of management, meets the paradigm of sustainable development, since a search activity ecologically balanced and socially just. Fishing culture is an activity with very promising prospects in the RDS Piranha, both to increase the supply to meet demand of fish, including between harvest and to assist in the preservation of species (such as the tambaqui and pirarucu), species that have great market acceptance by its rapid growth.

Town of Fishers is an ethnography of social and cultural relations of the artisanal fishermen of Fortaleza, east coast of the city of Fortaleza. Gives a description of the relationships established in the everyday, in the forms of community and family life, in their work spaces, leisure and housing . Part of this work the sociological discussion of living conditions in degraded areas in the urban space, thus I resort to the legacy of thinkers and sociologists to reflect ideas and concepts relevant to urban sociology, in understanding the connections between city and market town and belonging, observed the context of disputes over urban land, the experience of living in the city, even in situations of vulnerability. The audiovisual recordings, direct interviews and participant observation are articulated as a methodological research strategy. Talkingof Fortaleza is thinking its historical and sociocultural boundaries. Historically, artisanal fishermen are its first residents. Today, the legacy of previous generations and their experiences of this in the artisanal fishing activity in these subjects become protagonists of their own history, whether in the occupation of physical spaces for work and housing, so that remains a major metropolis in its dealing with the sea sustainably and unbreakable forms of religious devotions. Thus, the narrative of this work are the result of daily contact with the fishermen at work spaces, leisure and housing, particularly in the Shed at the Alley CarÃs and Morro St Therese; research brings finally reflections on the current permanence of these workers in a prime area of the city , where daily are pushed with their families to remote areas, where people experience the inhuman aspects of the disorder space and urban decay in the city.

Culture, Conflict and Crises in the Icelandic Fisheries : An Anthropological Study of People, Policy and Marine Resources in the North Atlantic Arctic

Einarsson, Níels January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is offered as a contribution to studies of social and cultural change in the Icelandic fisheries and fishing communities. Such changes may be seen as a result of the interplay of internal dynamics with both national and global forces and processes, not least with regard to the impacts of fisheries governance. These changes occur also in an international context of new environmental ideologies and perceptions of marine mammals, with consequences for social dynamics of local resource-use. Here it is argued that the conflicts over the harvesting or conservation of cetaceans can productively be understood from a cultural perspective. The thesis discusses the elevation of whales as symbols of particular value, and the metaphorical and cognitive aspects of, in particular, anthropomorphism, the projection of human motives and values onto animal behaviour, as a significant and effective part of conservation rhetoric and ideology. Specifically, the thesis deals with issues concerning whaling and whale watching along with issues and debates concerning these alternative forms of exploiting marine mammals. It also discusses central questions regarding fisheries governance and rights to fishing with reference to social and economic viability in Icelandic fishing communities. The unifying themes of this thesis are: how marine-mammal issues and controversies and social impacts of fisheries governance form part of globalization processes; how environmental and economic paradigms influence change, particularly in terms of marine-mammal conservation campaigns and market liberalist resource policy; and how these external ideological forces call for responses at local and national levels. The adaptive actions of the human agents and communities involved are described as creative, cumulative and complex. The thesis also highlights the central transformative role of the new regime of private property rights introduced into Icelandic fisheries governance in the 1980s.
