Study on colors in painting from Tang dynasty / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Tang dai hui hua yi shu de se cai yan jiu.

An investigation into the relation between objects and colors is essential in understanding how color perception is evolved in ancient China. First, the separation of objects and colors is a major step to establish a color system. Second, the advanced understanding of a unifying framework between colors and objects has been passed down through generations, which not only made its impact on traditional Chinese paintings' theory with regards to color such as "using color to portray color", "coloring by physical appearance", but also in a way restrained ancient people's thoughts on color's intrinsic properties. To satisfy the taste and understanding in color of their time, the ancients opted for the physical coordinates of an object as their final choice of color to be depicted, indicating their belief in the unification of object and color. When being reflected in paintings, such belief is shown as a pursuit of stable and organized color compositions. / Behind this rich tapestry of colors, the physical production of color pigments is instrumental in the art production in Dunhuang. In the Tang dynasty, the flourishing printing and dyeing industry fuelled the development of plant dyes, some of which could be employed in paintings to make their contributions in art. Mineral pigments made their way to Dunhuang amid the frequent cultural exchanges between China and the West, which formed the material basis for the vibrant Dunhuang art. However, when weighting their color options amid the exported pigments, Central China-culture genes helped to make a conscious decision to reflect local cultural spirit. / Dunhuang in the Tang dynasty is not a simple phrase describing a physical location during a certain time; it is rather an interrelated and compound concept. The rich color culture of the Tang dynasty was preserved through art in Dunhuang and the special nature of Dunhuang culture made it possible for us to understand the complexity of Tang color concept. Through depictions of secular life in both words and images, Dunhuang helped to construct a complete picture of Tang color theory. / In Tang dynasty, the nation's perception of color matured in discipline and art forms are manifested in a mirage of colors. The secular quality in the Tang society dictates the use of natural colors. The different hues of red and green became the color codes for Tang spirit, which are also the dominant colors used in Dunhuang's mural art. The frequent use of red colors reflects the uplifting spirit of its time. / Advisers: Kam Tang Tong; Jin Zhou. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-06, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2011. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 278-286). / Electronic reproduction. Mário de Andrade epicêntrico: estudo sobre a sociabilidade do Grupo dos Cinco paulista (1920-1930) / Mário de Andrade epicentric: study on the sociability relations of Sao Paulos Group of Five (1920 1930)

Mauricio Trindade da Silva 27 August 2018 (has links)
More than leader, Mário de Andrade can be understood and studied from the central position he occupied in the production of Brazilian modernism. An epicenter both in terms of the vastness of themes and cultural areas in which the poet strove to establish his artistic and intellectual work, supplanting the other modernists, as well as an epicenter in the aspect of established relations that provided varied tensions and interdependencies - and both cases contributed to enhance the influence of the poet and to consolidate his name for posterity. In order to demonstrate this epicentral accent, it is proposed to analyze the sociability relations of the São Paulo Group of Five, composed by Mário de Andrade, Anita Malfatti, Tarsila do Amaral, Oswald de Andrade and Menotti del Picchia, having as object of study the active and passive correspondence of Mário de Andrade established with the members of the group.

The increasing interest regarding the behavioral bases that sustain psychopathological conditions in general and the arrival of the spectral vision of personality disorders has awarded more visibility and relevance to studies with personality traits. Studying the personality traits patterns of the Big Five theory in depressed patients with the intent of finding differential characteristics in relation to Bipolar Affective Disorder and the existence or not of Borderline Personality Disorder comorbidity were the objectives of this study. The first study counted with the presence of 245 patients in current depressive episode, and the second one counted with 149 patients in the same condition. In the first study, sociodemographic, personality traits (NEO-FFI) and mood as well as anxiety disorders (MINI-Plus) data were collected. The groups with Major Depressive Disorder (n= 192) and Bipolar Affective Disorder (n= 62) were compared concerning these characteristics by means of bivariate and multivariate analyses. In the second study, information about Personality Disorders (MCMI-III) was added and comparisons were done as previously described, but between the groups with (n= 40) and without (n= 109) Borderline Personality Disorder comorbidity. The results of the first study pointed to a similar pattern in personality traits distribution between individuals with Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Affective Disorder during depressive episode. However, there was significant difference regarding the factor of Agreeableness (p= 0.005, OR= 0.94, IC 95%= 0.90 to 0.98), with higher levels among those with unipolar disorder. In the second study, presence of Borderline Personality Disorder was associated with lower indices of the Conscientiousness factor (p= 0.026, OR= 0.55, IC 95%= 0.33 to 0.93); 12 higher prevalence of suicide risk (p= 0.017, OR= 2.15, IC 95%= 1.14 to 4.05); comorbidity with Cluster A personality disorders (p= 0.010, RC= 2.61, IC 95%= 1.25 to 5.42) as well as with Cluster C ones (p= 0.045, RC= 1.03, IC 95%= 1.00 to 1.07). Data from both studies point that assessing personality traits can be useful, both for differentiation in cases where there is doubt between bipolar and unipolar disorders, as well as for aiding in identifying the presence of Borderline Personality Disorder comorbidity during depressive episodes.

The study was carried out by using an exploratory survey and bibliography focusing on the subject of ?credit?, and a questionnaire containing twenty five questions, most of which had closed answers, was compiled, with an aim to understanding the credit concession process, the different ways each brand functions and the level of the organization (whether operational, tactical or strategic) in which credit evaluation is effected and utilized by the five C?s of credit that stem from the support provided by the Small Business Scoring model for micro-companies. Based on analysis of frequency, it can be seen that the companies work in similar ways when carrying out registration, service, ways of payment and conceding deadlines. However, with regard to the reason for selecting the brand of the gas station, the data shows some different aspects between the companies. Most of the distributors, except one, do not take any steps to minimize risks or to reduce investments on amounts to be received with regard to restricting above average purchases. But, according to those questioned, 70.11% of the gas stations interviewed have a letter of indenmity and in 95.40% of the gas stations surveyed, the volume of sales is not concentrated on just a few clients, and this reduces the risk of default. Most of the companies, according to those questioned, do not use credit information centres and do not request any information relating to the financial indices of the gas stations. However, it cannot be assumed that client capacity analysis is not carried out, bearing in mind that the study did not cover what is stated in the contracts that the brand gas stations have with the distributors. It was also evident that the distributors only use the credit scoring model and not the behavioural or mixed ones. Based on analysis of cluster was generated three groups, nominated accordance with the performance form, the first group called Rigorous presented a bigger stated period, however one very rigid credit policy, the second, Flexible group presented minor severity of what the first one, already the third group, Without Politics presented 100% of the purchases by money, so they don`t need to worried about insolvency.

Energy efficiency investments in residential buildings : does personality matter?

Busic-Sontic, Ante January 2019 (has links)
In recent years, energy efficiency in the built environment has been attracting considerable interest to mitigate energy consumption. A number of scientific studies indicate that rising air pollution, decreasing biodiversity, ocean acidification and other adverse effects on humans and the environment in recent decades are due to greenhouse gas emissions, and a substantial share of the emissions can be attributed to energy usage in residential buildings. Investments in energy-efficient technologies have been made to alleviate such human induced causes contributing to the emissions, but they are still far from widespread, calling for a thorough understanding of individuals' decision-making processes to promote further adoption of energy efficiency investments. Although personality has been widely recognised as an explanatory factor of behaviour, a rigorous discussion of it in the context of energy efficiency investments is missing. As such, to understand the role of personality traits in making high-cost energy efficiency investments in residential buildings, this research applies a multidisciplinary approach to derive theoretical models that are evaluated in subsequent empirical investigations using quantitative methods and data from the UK and Germany. The findings suggest three ways through which personality can influence energy efficiency investments. The first is an indirect impact of personality traits through risk preferences, in which the significance of the personality effects depends on the financial subsidy context. The second is an indirect effect of personality traits through environmental concern. The third way suggests an impact of personality traits through their importance for individuals' capability and willingness to consider peer behaviour.

Development of a Five-Axis Machining Algorithm in Flat End Mill Roughing

Thompson, Michael Blaine 16 May 2005 (has links)
To further the research done in machining complex surfaces, Jensen [1993] developed an algorithm that matches the normal curvature at a point along the surface with the resultant radius formed by tilting a standard flat end mill. The algorithm called Curvature Matched Machining (CM2) is faster and more efficient than conventional three-axis machining [Jensen 1993, Simpson 1995 & Kitchen 1996]. Despite the successes of CM2 there are still many areas available for research. Consider the machining of a mold or die. The complex nature of a mold requires at least 20-30 weeks of lead time. Of those 20-30 weeks 50% is spent in machining. Of that time 50-65% is spent in rough machining. For a mold or die that amounts to 7 to 8 weeks of rough machining. If one could achieve as much as a 10-15% reduction in machining time that would amount to almost one week worth of time savings. As can be seen, small improvements in time and efficiency for rough machining can yield significant results [Fallbohmer 1996]. This research developed an algorithm that focused on reducing the overall machining time for parts and surfaces. Particularly, the focus of this research was within rough machining. The algorithm incorporated principles of three-axis rough cutting with five-axis CM2, hence Rough Curvature Matched Machining (RCM2). In doing so, the algorithm ‘morphed‘ planar machining slices to the semi-roughed surface allowing the finish pass to be complete in one pass. This roughing algorithm has significant time-savings over current roughing techniques.
