Dinâmica espaço-temporal das inundações do pantanal / Spatio-Temporal Flood Dynamics of the PantanalPadovani, Carlos Roberto 17 December 2010 (has links)
The flood variability in space and time determine the ecological process and influences human activities in the Pantanal wetland. The understanding of the flood dynamics is the key for better management practices and reaction in case of extreme events. In this study, methods for water quantification and seasonality extraction were applied to a ten years time series (2000 to 2009) of MODIS13Q1 images for continuous modeling of floods. Based in flood regime and geomorphology an area of 150.502 Km2 distributed in 25 sub-regions was determined for the Pantanal. The flooded area varied from 5.539 km2 to 52.894 km2, averaging 18.329km2, reflecting a dry period compared with the previous decades. Most of the Pantanal (86.841 km2) flooded at least once in the period, but a relative big area keeps no flooded or flooded in a short period. No flooded or short time flooded areas was spread over all the Pantanal, while long time to permanent flooded areas were concentrated in just some spots. Four main stages of floods were determined and the main water fluxes and water storage areas were mapped, although a high inter annual variability has been occurred. Despite the limitations of scale and map matching, a good agreement between flood frequency map with vegetation and soils maps was obtained. Nonlinear Logistic statistical models were determined for the relationships between the main hydrological compartments. It was possible to estimate past flood scenarios based in the relationship between total flooded area and Paraguay River stage. Similarity and water fluxes relationships were determined between the sub-compartments, characterizing the spatial and temporal water behavior. Based on the data and information generated, an alert system for dry and flood events (SISMONPAN) was proposed for the Pantanal.

Infrastructure to model complex systems: hydrological modelingUnknown Date (has links)
This research proposes an Infrastructure to model complex systems for hydrological modeling.
Currently, the three main hydrological packages are: i) SEAWAT (modeling groundwater flow); ii) HECRAS
(modeling surface water flow); iii) HEC-HMS (modeling atmospheric water flow). Each of these models is self-contained and has a different timescale and simulation speed. Consequently, any integrated model will only run as fast as the slowest of the models. This makes it difficult to provide reliable and dynamic information on water levels and water availability for a given geographical region in a timely manner. The goal of this research is to facilitate the integration of multiple hydrological models from different hydrological packages by applying Electronic Design Automation (EDA) methodologies, including System Level Design (SLD) methodology, SystemC-AMS language, Python language and libraries (numpy, Statsmodels, and ctypes). The EDA methodology brings in the additional advantage of significantly improved simulation speed. The Infrastructure to Model Complex Systems applications is
demonstrated using the following SEAWAT benchmark problems: i) Case 1; ii) Henry; iii) Elder problem.
Simulation results from the aforementioned benchmarks are analyzed and discussed. Lastly, future research
work is presented. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Formas de relevo e os materiais de superfície no pantanal de Poconé - MT / Landforms and superficial deposits in the Pantanal (wetland) of Poconé, Mato Grosso State - BrazilFonseca, Gizelle Prado da Silva 03 November 2015 (has links)
Increasing scientific concern has been raised by global environmental problems and change worldwide, especially in more vulnerable areas such as the Pantanal basin, where the impacts of such changes are more evident and intense. The Pantanal floodplain is one of the largest floodplains in the world, and so, probably more susceptible to impacts due to climatic change and anthropic action. It is composed of a landscape in constant transformation, subject to impacts influenced by tectonic movement, climatic change and depositional and hydrological systems, which result in different pedogenetic processes. The proposed study aimed at understanding the relief forms and their material components, in the hydrodynamic context of the Pantanal de Poconé sub-region. The soil types identified in the studied relief forms presented hydromorphic qualities, with reduction and oxidation processes and differentiated colours, including mottled aspects. Pedogenetic processes such as plinthosol and gleysol building is evident, the former in floodplains, murundus and ranges, and the latter in floodpains and murundus. The relief forms presented the following soil types: arenosols, planosols, plinthosols and gleysols. Arenosols and planosols were more commonly found in ranges; in the murundus, planosols and plinthosols are more frequent, and so are gleysols and plinthosols in the floodplains. The ranges located in the northern part of the Pantanal do Poconé sub-region presented typically a rather sandy aspect compared to the southern part, with higher clay content. The floodplains and murundus are composed of soils with texture ranging from medium sand to clay. Considering the chemical properties of the soils from the different relief forms analyzed, the ranges had the higher acidity; however, most soils which compose the relief forms studied presented medium to high acidity, with a few exceptions. Fertility and CEC ranged from medium to low, and most analysed soils were dystrophic. Understanding the properties of each relief form and the processes that impact them is an important step in order to comprehend both natural and anthropic environmental changes. This comprehension should promote a more sustainable and efficient land use and allow understanding of the potential changes through which these environments may undergo.

Previous issue date: 2010-12-22 / It is intended with this study, to understand the process of formation / processing
sites in a lowland complex Solimões-Amazonas, considering the main
management practices and their impact on the organization of production of small
farmers who inhabit the Coast Fishery, municipality of Manacapuru-AM. In these
ancient sites in the past dominated large plantations and kids that dominated the
landscape, but are now being enriched by fruit species, as cupuaçu, coconut,
banana, acaí, jambo, lemon, cashew, soursop and many other species of
economic value and nutritious. Even with the decline of the Amazon rubber boom,
and consequently the loss of interest in the exploitation of rubber trees and cocoa
trees, the ancient sites (groves) are still found in several properties of the Fishery
Coast, even if mixed with other species of trees and fruit adapted to environmental
conditions in the Amazon region. Despite the rubber and cocoa trees have lost
their importance from the point of view, remain, because of the emotional bond that
residents have with this environment, since many of them, especially older ones,
were responsible for planting. However, residents and newer immigrants, without
this bond of affection, began the process of clearing. The sites of the lower
Solimões River live between disruption and adaptation. In the past, rubber and
cocoa, today, mainly cupuaçu. Thus, we will reflect on the changes that are
occurring at these sites, since the rubber crisis and the rise of other fruit species.
No passado, a borracha e o cacau, hoje, principalmente, o cupuaçu.

Methane fluxes from tree stems in Amazon floodplains : Evaluating methodological aspect of measuring spatial and seasonal variability in a flooded systemWiding, felicia, Rubensson, Nina January 2018 (has links)
Tropical wetland-adapted trees are recognized as an important source of regional and global methane (CH4) emissions, by transport of soil gas through wetland trees. However, spatiotemporal variability and controls on the magnitude of tree-mediated CH4 emissions remain unknown as fluxes are poorly constrained. Therefore, we aim to optimize sampling efforts to yield representative emission estimates for distinct types of forest ecosystems and improve knowledge on spatial and temporal variability. We examined the variability in tree stem mediated CH4 fluxes in situ, located in three different floodplains (Solimões, Negro and Tapajós) with various characteristics, during different hydrological seasons. The sampling was conducted by measuring fluxes from 36 trees at each location using closed chambers. All the three study sites, situated in the Amazon region, displayed seasonal variability in CH4 fluxes, with the largest contributions observed during the wet season. A significant difference between Solimões and Negro was detected during the wet season and this may be a result of the different chemical and physical characteristics between the sampling locations. As for within the study sites, zones played a significant role for CH4 flux from trees since the water level influences the fluxes. A strong spatial variability (lower fluxes in the land zone, and the highest flux obtained in the zone with greatest variability between dry and wet conditions) was found. This pattern can be addressed by sampling along flooded and non-flooded zones. / The Global Methane Budget

Impacts of flood-mediated disturbance on species of High Nature Value farmlandKasoar, Timothy January 2019 (has links)
High Nature Value farmland (HNVf) refers to traditional agricultural landscapes which support high levels of biodiversity. HNVf is declining across Europe, through both intensification and abandonment, raising concerns about the conservation of species associated with it. One argument is that such HNV species are better described as being dependent on disturbance, and that management practices on HNVf mimics the effects of natural disturbance processes such as herbivory, fire, severe weather and flooding, which are often suppressed across much of Europe. If true, one innovative approach for conserving HNV species would be to restore natural disturbance processes, as advocated by the "rewilding" conservation movement. I set out to explore the feasibility of this approach, focusing on flooding. Restoration of flood regimes is receiving growing attention, not only for its biodiversity benefits but also to reduce the risk of flooding in downstream urban areas, improve water quality, and increase the amenity value of rivers. I carried out four linked studies. Each followed a broadly similar approach: I selected sampling locations both in floodplain areas and comparable surrounding farmland, I surveyed birds and butterflies as indicator taxa of biodiversity, I carried out habitat mapping, and I estimated disturbance through both field measurements and remotely sensed data. My first study was around the Pripyat river in Ukraine, which has a large floodplain that has had minimal human intervention. I found that several, but not all, HNV species had higher population densities in the floodplain than in the surrounding HNV farmland, and several more had approximately equal population densities in the two habitats. This suggested intact flood regimes can retain some species that are elsewhere restricted to HNVf. My second study was around the river Rhône, France, where a restoration project has increased flow in floodplain channels and improved their connectivity with the main channel. I compared restored and non-restored segments of floodplain channel, as well as farmland and other habitats. While I found significant differences in population densitiesbetween habitat types, few species showed significant differences between restored and non-restored segments, suggesting that restoration had only limited ecological impacts on the wider landscape. My third study investigated a more ambitious restoration project which has reconnected a large area of floodplain to the river Peene in Germany. I found many HNV species had equal or higher population densities in the restored floodplain than in the surrounding unrestored farmland. This demonstrates that it is possible to restore the effect of natural flood disturbance on habitats and species. However, not all HNV species benefitted from flood-disturbed habitats, so clearly other conservation interventions need to be considered. For the final study, pooling data from all three sites I looked for associations between species' traits and environmental variables. My aim was to identify traits which predict species' responses to the environment, and hence which species are most likely to benefit from restoration. However, I did not find any significant associations in my data. In conclusion, I demonstrated that flood-disturbed habitats are suitable for many species traditionally associated with HNV farmland, and further that restoring flood disturbance processes can recreate those habitats. As such, reconnecting rivers and restoring floodplains would be a useful conservation intervention for species threatened by the abandonment or intensification of HNV farmland in Europe. However, other species did not benefit, and require other conservation interventions, perhaps other forms of rewilding, or continued incentivisation of favourable farming practices.
