Floyd Phillips Gibbons: A biographical and bibliographical study

Unknown Date (has links)
"This writer, having been acquainted with Mrs. Zelda Gibbons Mayer, sister of Floyd Gibbons, talked with her to determine what information on the famous journalist might be extant among the family records. The inquiry revealed that not only was Mrs. Mayer willing to make available an appreciable amount of unpublished material, but that Mrs. Mayer's younger brother, Mr. Edward Gibbons, also was prepared to provide considerable information for such a project. At Mrs. Mayer's suggestion, this writer also solicited the assistance of the writer James Warner Bellah, whose subsequent letter has contributed substantially to the available information. The problem, then, was to determine a convenient and concise form for presenting the details of Gibbons' life and writings in such a way that the information would be readily accessible. After a study of various types of reference works, the writer elected to use the form of a bio-bibliography in preparing this professional paper in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master's degree in Library Science. The first of three parts is a brief biography of Floyd Gibbons, in which the main events of his life are described and discussed with respect to their effect upon what Gibbons wrote. The second is a report and summary of the reactions of the reading public at large and of various reactions of the reading public at large and of various critical reviewers to Floyd Gibbons' books. Following these is a bibliography of works by and about Floyd Gibbons, with an introduction which explains fully its contents and organization"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "June, 1957." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Sarah Rebecca Reed, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references.

I Am Not Frightened - Work for Wind Ensemble

Schultz, Brandon 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
I Am Not Frightened is a work for wind ensemble. This piece lasts around ten minutes and is inspired by confrontations with death and how to move past them. Musical inspiration comes from Pink Floyd, Greta Van Fleet, John Mackey, and James Stephenson. The title of the piece refers to the spoken lyrics found in Pink Floyd's “The Great Gig in the Sky” from their 1973 album The Darkside of the Moon. These lyrics come from the band asking Abby Road Studio workers while recording the album, if they are afraid of dying. A janitor named Gerry O’Driscoll provided the lyrics that inspired this piece: “And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it – you've got to go some time.” This thought process of accepting that death is as much a part of life as

O surrealismo e a fotografia nas narrativas das capas de discos: um olhar da agência Hipgnosis. / The onyric and the photograpfy in the narratives of the disc covers, a look at the hipgnosis agency.

Grecco, José Vicente Azzi 10 May 2018 (has links)
Photography occupies a significant place in the universe of graphic design. It is believed that the English agency Hipgnosis, created by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, has initiated the process known as fotodesign, whose purpose is to insert the photographic image as non-verbal communicator. Hipgnosis\' approach to graphic design began with photographic essays and the use of image manipulation techniques in the photographic laboratory, with black and white, color and infrared films. The agency\'s work was directly with rock and roll bands from the English and North American scene from the 1960s. This procedure enjoyed the influence that the artistic movements Dadaism, Surrealism and Pop Art presented methods on the creations of the covers of musical disks of the London scene in the 1960s, and consequently alternatives to the graphic design oto the period. This qualitative exploratory and phenomenological research aims to present the course of the pre digital photography process in graphic design as the main focus of the approach through the works realized by the designers Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, head of the agency Hipgnosis.

Land utilization study on 100 farms in Floyd County, Virginia, in 1937

Dougan, Ramon Carl 11 May 2010 (has links)
Soils in the area studied seemed to be a determining factor in land class. With very few exceptions the land of Class IV was found to consist mainly of alluvial soils, lying along Little River. Classes I and II combined, and Class III lands were found in some cases along Little River but these areas were dominated by cliffs, woods, and untillable land, and included relatively little alluvial soil. Rock outcroppings in the hilly soils were noticeable on most of the land of Classes I, II, and III. Farm management data alone provide insufficient information for an adequate classification of the land. A personal investigation in conjunction with farm management data will tend to improve the classification. Value and condition of buildings are an important factor in classifying land but too much importance should not be attached to this factor, especially in areas where lumber is relatively plentiful, as was the case in Floyd County. It seems, from the results of this study, that when the value and condition of buildings are used in the classification of land that the tenure of the operator should be taken into consideration. To attempt a land classification project without topographical and soil maps may easily result in many errors unless reliable farm management data be supplemented with information obtained by careful personal investigation. It is thought that on the basis of the procedure followed in this study a dependable classification is possible. However, the use of such maps should reduce considerably the difficulty and cost of making an adequate classification. / Master of Science

Hur gestaltas Black Lives Matter i svenska tidningar? : En gestaltningsanalys av Aftonbladet och Dagens Nyheters nyhetsrapportering, delvis baserad på tidigare forskning om hur amerikansk media gestaltat BLM-rörelsen

Aslan, Dilan, Ericsson, Josefine January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to identify frames found in previous research on US media reporting on Black Lives Matter in two Swedish national newspapers, Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter. Other frames not found in US media were also identified. This analysis is essential as it is important to understand how societal challenges and problems are framed by the media, telling the public what the problem is and how it can be solved, shaping norms and opinions. A quantitative and qualitative content analysis is performed to answer the research questions; 1) The frames in US media: anti-black, pro-white, stereotype and episodic, are they found in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter news articles during the period May 25th to June 25th? 2) How are the frames solidarity, anti-racism, violent demonstrations and police brutality used in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter? 3) Are there episodic and thematic frames in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter during the period?  We make use of Shanto Iyengar’s theory on episodic and thematic, Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw's agenda-setting theory and Robert Entman's framing theory. The essay concludes that frames used in US media are not used at all or only used in a very limited number of articles. The result also shows that other frames, not previously used in US media, dominated the Swedish reporting. The last result shows that the episodic frame dominates the articles. Our hope is that this essay complements the current research area with a Swedish perspective on how the media frame the Black Lives Matter movement.
