Quality of life is related to health, and it is defined as an individual's perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns, emphasizing the need of an integrative view of the human being. Naturology, as the field of knowledge that studies health from an integrated view of man, has the precept of working on prevention, maintenance and recovery of health through education. Based on an educative approach, the general aim of this study was to describe and analyse the work of education for death developed by professional workers at a Day Care Centre for the Old, and the specific aim was to identify how those workers are trained to educate for death, as well as to verify the ideological, religious, theoretical and technical positions they take and which ground their work with death. A qualitative research method was used and data were collected through a semi-structured interview, which was later submitted to content analysis. It was possible to verify the professionals' lack of preparation to attend the needs of the old, which reflects an academic development deficit. The major difficulties professionals face to deal with the subject were the age-related cognitive debilities as well as the social limitations to talk about the subject, and the ease observed was the various experiences of loss in an elderly person's life. The religious posture adopted by the participants was based on their own subjective experience with spirituality. Despite the lack of preparation to work with the subject, all the workers interviewed relate education for death to quality of life. It was found that in spite of the justifiable necessities for the work with death, several difficulties arise. Educative work aiming at prevention must be aggregated to all fields of knowledge on an integrative view of the human being / O envelhecimento da população é um tema recorrente na atualidade, o que gera preocupação constante com a qualidade de vida desta população.

Regions in time : Gail Anderson-Dargatz’s The cure for death by lightning and Ann-Marie Macdonald’s Fall on your knees

Lewis, Tanya 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the methods through which Gail Anderson-Dargatz and Ann-Marie MacDonald construct region in their novels The Cure for Death by Lightning and Fall on Your Knees. These texts, like all successful regional novels, describe more than geography. Their regions are also functions of time. I introduce the term "temporal region" to describe the spaces created by this interdependence of time and place. I then focus upon the specifics of descriptive and narrative approach that lead to the convincing portrayal of the Shuswap and Cape Breton Island in the texts. Anderson-Dargatz and MacDonald direct attention to the foddways of their regions, expressing the connection between consumption choices and a society's historical and physical location. The authors also articulate their regions by highlighting cultural diversity in the areas they describe. In this way they deny the social homogeneity more sentimental regional texts often rely upon. Finally, the novelists use an appropriately Canadian method of regional opposition to define their temporal regions according to that which they are not ~ they are not American, glamorous, or urban. They therefore must be Canadian, quotidian, and rural.

Palliative care in context: an ethnographic account of the journey from diagnosis to the end of life.

Hughes, Catherine Rose January 2010 (has links)
This thesis provides an ethnographic account of the journey from diagnosis with a life-limiting illness to the end of life. It tracks the lives and eventual deaths of eight people and 83 family members for a period of three and a half years in total. Culture is located as a central element or lens by which to view this journey. The role, function and issues for social work as a profession are discussed in various chapters. The theoretical underpinnings of the thesis are informed by the ecological perspective combined with psychosocial theories of loss and grief. Drawing on a broad social systems theory, in conjunction with an ethnographic methodology and grounded theory analysis, contributes to the development of research which firmly takes culture into account. Four primary topic areas are presented: a narrative exploration of diagnosis, the changing landscape that participants encounter, the embodiment of new places and spaces, and finally, the journey’s end. The themes from the four topic areas contribute to the development of the two core categories “time and place” and “preparedness for death”. A schematic representation of the paths participants took is provided in the discussion of the core categories. Lastly, the New Zealand Palliative Care Strategy (Ministry of Health, 2001) is drawn on to aid the discussion of issues arising from the research and the implications for practice in this field.

Daoust, Ariane 06 1900 (has links)
Despite being widely accepted by the medical community, the concept of brain death is still misunderstood by healthcare providers and the general public. It is central to several debates and remains a source of controversy. In spite of documented practice variations and conceptual confusion surrounding brain death, the upstream sources of variability and uncertainty have not been extensively investigated. This confusion is likely to influence debates and decisions about end-of-life and organ donation, and thus raises serious medical and ethical considerations. This thesis first proposes a review of the literature discussing the origins, the evolution and the debates related to the concept of brain death, as well as the ethical issues associated with brain death. The methodological approaches used for the realization of this research are then described. The results obtained from the qualitative content analysis of Canadian and American media about the different depictions of brain death follow. These results describe the use of the term “brain death” in contexts of organ donation, definitions of brain death, determination of death, end-of-life issues, legal issues and also colloquial uses of the term. Finally, a general discussion about the role of the terminology used to discuss the concept and that of healthcare professionals involved in its determination and organ donation practices, as well as recommendations for the future will conclude this thesis.

For a better comprehension of the subject, we approached the concept of social security and its historical evaluation. After this preliminary examination, we made a few considerations about the social security under the Brazilian law. When we dealt with the pension for death benefits within the Social Security s General Regime of the national law, we analyzed all the criteria that integrate its hypothesis (material, space and time criteria) and its consequent ruling (personal and quantitative criteria). As a critical argument related to the approached matter, we tried to demonstrate situations in which the survivors benefits in Brazil should not be granted because the social necessity requisite is not present. In the final part of this dissertation, as an attempt to reach conclusions and suggestions for the improvement of the pension for death benefits under the Brazilian Social Security s General Regime, we discoursed upon the pension for death benefits in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Chile and the United States of America / O escopo desta dissertação é estudar o benefício previdenciário pensão por morte no Regime Geral da Previdência Social brasileiro em cotejo com o ordenamento alienígena.

How to Prepare for Death

Lind Färnstrand, Izabel January 2019 (has links)
Abstract of Master essay - 10 HP Izabel Lind Färnstrand Mentor: Emma Kihl Examinator: Sigrid Sandström How to Prepare for Death In this essay I dwell into the failures of our moral senses in relation to the concept of death. How does modern death culture affect our way of life and our ability to take responsibility for the life and death of others? These questions are formed by these current times and affect both my art practice and my everyday life. When facing death within my family it occur- red to me that my and my family’s relationship to death is failing us. I have become frustra- ted with the fear and silence that seems too natural to my surrounding. Not being able to talk about a part of life that is inevitable seems irrational. It became clear when the lack of under- standing and acceptance of death caused relatives an immense suffering. The struggle seemed unnessesary and urged me to try to understand more, based on their deaths. Seeing how very different the experience of dying can be made me wonder what makes a ”good” death possible for some and others not. From there my interest in the topic death culture and fear emerged, and this essay touches on this in a variety of aspects. I use my personal experiences in combina- tion with thoughts of others to talk of layers of these issues through my artistic practice. This personal method is my way of trying to structure a thinking – in a way that I can use and make sense of it – with a varied level of success. I feel it is important to note that I don’t claim to have any answes. This essay is more an attempt to pose questions around human behaviour. Even though many of these ques- tions have been asked over and over again, throughout different times, I believe it is impor- tant to ask them again and again. As long as the Human is part and violently effecting this suffering world. Many of the thoughts in this essay are based on fragments of ideas by Judith Butler, espe- cielly from her book Frames of War: When is Life Grievable? (2009). I also reference Caitlin Doughty’s From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death (2017) and and Sogyal Rinpoche The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying (1992). The themes gathered that I try to make use of in this essay and in my artistic practice are purpose, fear, death, health, happiness, narcissim and resposibility. / Abstract of Artistic work How to Prepare for Death @ Galleri Mejan, Exercisplan 3, october 2019 Media: Spatial installation with a performance (1 h) Materials: Clay, plaster, metal & red plastic film How to Prepare for Death is a spatial installation in one of the gallery rooms of Galleri Mejan. The work includes the whole space of the area, such as the floor and the walls. You step into an altered reality, where the floor is covered with clay that is cracking increasingly over time and windows that are tinted red so that the air you breath seems red. When you enter your eyes need to adjust and after a while it is rather the outside that seems colored, neon green -  the complementary color of red. From the clay there are metal rods sticking out vertically, with plaster sculptures at the end. These sculptures are broken, and resemble body parts with a medical aesthetics. Similar sculptures come out from the walls, like fragile fragments of something that used to be. When you walk around the sculptures the clay crackle under your feet, and crumble into smaller pieces and dust. It is constructed as an ambivalent experience of nothingness, emptiness, ”afterness” and a sanctuary of thoughts. My questions about life and death drive me to investigate how to create spaces for these subjects to feel present, so that we can face our fears.
