&Ccedil / i&ccedil / ekdagi basin developed on the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC) is a foreland basin developed as the southern integral part of the &Ccedil / ankiri Basin during the Late Paleocene to middle Oligocene. The basin has two compartments separated by the &Ccedil / i&ccedil / ekdagi High comprises two sedimentary cycles. The oldest cycle comprises Barakli, Koca&ccedil / ay and Bogazk&ouml / y formationsa and is exposed both in the northern and the southern sectors. They were deposited in marine conditions. The second cycle comprises incik and G&uuml / vendik formations and was deposited in continental settings. The first cycle comprises uniformly south-directed paleocurrent directions in both the northern and southern sectors whereas the second cycle deposits are represented by south-directed directions in the southern sector, and bimodal directions in the northern sector. In addition, the second cycle formations contain progressive unconformities and coarsening upwards sequences indicative of thrusting. Internal structures of the units and paleostress data indicate that the basin experienced over-all compression and local extension due to flexural bending. This gave way to inversion of some of the normal faults and uplift of the &Ccedil / i&ccedil / ekdagi High during the deposition of second cycle in the Late Eocene to middle Oligocene time which subsequently resulted in compartmentalization of the basin.

Cenozoic evolution of a fragmented foreland basin, Altiplano plateau, southern Peru

Debate persists on the timing, magnitude and style of crustal shortening, uplift and basin evolution in the Andes. Many studies suggest that the central Andes, including the Altiplano plateau, were gradually uplifted as a result of protracted Cenozoic retroarc shortening. However, recent isotopic studies conclude that the Andes instead rose in pulses, with the most significant event occurring at 10-6 Ma. Many researchers attribute these rapid pulses of uplift to lower lithosphere delamination events. A better understanding of the history of Cenozoic crustal shortening is essential for determination of the mechanism(s) of Andean uplift. The well-exposed Cenozoic San Jerónimo Group was studied in the Ayaviri basin of the northern Altiplano in southern Peru. The 3-5 km-thick succession is situated at 3900-4800 m elevation, between the Western Cordillera magmatic arc and the Eastern Cordillera fold-thrust-belt. New detrital zircon U-Pb geochronological results from four sandstones and one reworked tuff in the San Jerónimo succession show large age populations indicative of syndepositional volcanism between approximately 38 and 27 Ma. A 1600-m-thick magnetostratigraphic section further constrains the depositional timing and accumulation rate of the upper portion of the succession. Sedimentological observations show a rapid transition from cross-stratified braided-fluvial sandstones to proximal channel-fill and alluvial-fan conglomerates at ~30 Ma. Paleocurrent measurements show important temporal and spatial variations in sediment dispersal patterns while conglomerate clast counts show an upsection transition from almost exclusively volcanic input to increasing contributions of clastic, quartzite, and limestone detritus. The corresponding shifts in depositional environment and sediment provenance are attributed to the activation of new thrust structures in close proximity to the basin, namely the Pucapuca-Sorapata fault system, indicating the presence of an eastward advancing fold-thrust belt dating to at least 38 Ma and reaching the Ayaviri basin within the northern Altiplano plateau at ~30 Ma. / text

Facies Architecture and Stratigraphy of Tidal Ridges in the Eocene Roda Formation, Northern Spain

ABSTRACT The Eocene Roda Formation in northern Spain documents the deposits from a range of coastal depositional environments. These include alluvial plains, distributary channels, mouth bars, upper to lower-shorefaces, and tidal shelf ridges. Eighteen progradational sand tongues that are interpreted as parasequences compose two third-order sequences. Sequence 1 accumulated in an environment with strong tidal currents and high rates of progradation, while Sequence 2 was deposited under relatively weaker currents and higher rates of aggradation, which produced a higher mudstone:sandstone ratio. The stratigraphy highlights the transgressive origin of six tidal shelf ridges, three in each sequence, that overlie regressive deltaic tongues. Sequence 1 shelf ridges are composed almost entirely of cross-bedded sandstones, whereas Sequence 2 ridges are composed of a mixture of cross-bedded and ripple-laminated deposits. Ridges in both sequences contain bioturbation that is typical of the Cruziana Ichnofacies, and that indicates a marine origin. The tidal ridges are stratigraphically located at or near the point of maximum third-order regression, and are not found within early highstand or late transgressive deposits― times of high relative sea level when the deltaic shoreline did not protrude significantly. Tidal currents were accentuated at the coast when the delta complex had prograded several kilometres into the basin, while during times of high relative sea level, the basin was wider and tidal currents were weaker, consequently leading to a lack of tidal deposits. Dynamique sédimentaire au Paléocène en contexte précoce de bassin d’avant pays dans le domaine Nord-Pyrénéen / Dynamics Palaeocene sedimentary record in the Northern Pyrenean Basin

Lors du Paléocène, le bassin d’avant-pays nord-pyrénéen est une large baie ouverte sur le proto-océan Atlantique. Ce golfe est constitué d’une plateforme carbonatée peu profonde dans la région des Petites-Pyrénées, et de sédiments majoritairement continentaux dans les Corbières (Aude). Nous avons recueilli des donnés sédimentologiques, au travers de 10 coupes, réparties sur un transect ouest-est d’environ 150 km, parallèle à l’actuelle chaîne des Pyrénées. L’analyse faciologique de ces coupes a permis de définir des séquences. L’absence de données stratigraphiques notamment dans les séries continentales des Corbières, rendait les corrélations incertaines. Ainsi pour améliorer le calage stratigraphique une analyse des variations du δ13Corg a été réalisée sur une coupe (Lairière)pour l’ensemble du Paléocène. Cette coupe a été comparée avec des coupes de références marines bien calées et ainsi ce travail a permis d’affiner la stratigraphie du Paléocène en domaine continental et plus largement dans la zone d’étude. Couplées à l’analyse séquentielle, ces données ont aussi permis de reconstituer l’architecture du Paléocène. Notre approche nous a permis de (1) tracer des esquisses paléogéographiques pour chacun des trois étages du Paléocène, de (2) proposer un modèle d’évolution tectono-stratigraphique et de (3) discuter des facteurs de contrôle de la sédimentation paléocène dans le bassin nord-pyrénéen. / During the Paleocene, the North Pyrenean Foreland Basin is an open bay on the Atlantic Ocean. This gulf consists of a shallow carbonate platform in the Petites-Pyrenees area, and mainly continental sediments in the Corbières area (Aude). We collected sedimentological data, through 10 sections, on a west-east transect of 150 km, parallel to the present-day Pyrenees. The facies analysis of these sections allowed us to define sequences but the lack of stratigraphical data, particularly in the continental deposits of the Corbières, made correlations uncertain. To overcome this problem, an analysis of the δ13Corg variations was carried out. It provided a geochemical curve for the whole Paleocene that was then compared with marine reference sections which made possible to refine the stratigraphy of the continental succession and more largely of the study area. Coupled with sequential analysis, these data have also enabled the reconstruction of Paleocene architecture. Our approach allowed us to (1) draw paleogeographic map for each of the Paleocene three stages, to (2) propose a model of tectono-stratigraphical evolution and to (3) discuss the control factors of Paleocene sedimentation in the North Pyrenean Basin

Les bassins d'avant-pays se développent au front des orogènes par flexure de la lithosphère. L'héritage structural et thermique de celle-ci joue un rôle fondamental dans leur évolution et différentes sources peuvent contribuer à la subsidence du bassin. Cette thèse analyse les effets de l'héritage d'un épisode de rift sur un rétro-bassin d'avant-pays qui s'est développé alors que la lithosphère n'avait pas retrouvé son état d'équilibre. Le Bassin Aquitain est le rétro-bassin d'avant-pays pyrénéen qui s'est développé au Campanien-Miocène. L'orogenèse pyrénéenne fait suite à un épisode de rifting Aptien-Cénomanien durant lequel la croûte a été fortement amincie et le manteau sous-continental exhumé. Les effets de l'héritage crustal dus au rift sur l'évolution du bassin sont étudiés par une analyse des structures dans la croûte, du comportement flexural de la plaque européenne et de la distribution des sédiments synorogéniques. L'évolution de la subsidence dans le bassin est étudiée par analyse de subsidence 1D d'après des données de forages. Enfin, les mécanismes d'inversion de la marge européenne sont étudiés par restauration d'une coupe structurale à échelle crustale. Cette étude aide à définir le rôle de l'héritage d'un ancien système de rift sur la mise en place et l'évolution d'un bassin d'avant-pays ainsi que le rôle des différentes sources de subsidence et leurs variations spatio-temporelles. Cette étude démontre également les liens étroits entre l'histoire du rétro-bassin d'avant-pays et les mécanismes et phases d'inversion de la marge hyper-amincie / Foreland basins develop in front of orogens by flexure of the lithosphere. When they initiate over a crust that has been affected by a previous tectonic event, structural and thermal inheritance have a fundamental role in their evolution and different sources may contribute to basin subsidence. The present work analyzes the impact of inheritance from a rifting event on a foreland basin, which develops while thermal reequilibration has not been achieved at the time of loading. The Aquitaine Basin is the Pyrenean retro-foreland basin that developed from Campanian to Miocene. The Pyrenean orogenesis follows an Aptian-Cenomanian rifting during which the continental crust is thinned and sub-continental mantle exhumed. The orogenesis starts only 10 Myr after the end of rifting. The effects of crustal inheritance due to rifting on the evolution of the basin are studied by analyzing crustal structures, flexural behavior of the European plate, and foreland succession distribution. The subsidence evolution of the basin is studied by the 1D backstripping technique using borehole data. Finally, inversion mechanisms of the European margin are studied by cross-section construction and restoration at crustal scale. This study helps to define the role of rift inheritance on the initiation and the evolution of a retro-foreland basin, as well as the relative role of subsidence sources and their variations in space and time. The present work also shows the strong relationship between the retro-foreland basin's history and both mechanism and the history and mechanisms of inversion of a hyper-extended margin

Mixed Carbonate-Siliciclastic Sequence Development and Chemostratigraphy On a Distal Foreland During Miocene Glaciation, Eastern Saudi Arabia

The Miocene of the Lidam area, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, was studied to examine the interaction of glacio-esustasy during moderate Antarctic glaciation, within a small back bulge basin on the slowly subsiding distal Arabian foreland, distal from the active Zagros fold-thrust belt. Low subsidence rates of 1 to 4 cm/k.y generated the long-term accommodation, which were considerable slower than those in the proximal foredeep in Iran. Deposition of the siliciclastics was driven by lowered sea levels, and moderately humid to arid climate. Rising sea levels pushed the siliciclastics updip allowing mixed siliciclastics and carbonates to form downdip, under semi-arid climate and locally hypersaline conditions. Maximum transgression slightly predated the Middle Miocene climatic optimum when prograding siliciclastics migrated across the platform. Falling triggered siliciclastic deposition under semi-arid climate. Sequences appear to relate to long-term obliquity (~1.2 m.y. cycles) and long-term eccentricity (400 k.y.) cycles. The succession contains numerous missing beats reflecting the updip position of the study area, and sea level changes of tens of meters that frequently exposed the platform. Siliciclastic units commonly are incised into muddy sediments beneath sequence boundaries. Multiple exposure surfaces occur within Hadrukh brecciated palustrine carbonates. Within Dam carbonates, parasequence boundaries commonly are capped by tidal flat laminites (some of which are incipiently brecciated). High frequency negative excursions of ∂¹³C within the succession appear to relate to near-surface diagenesis by soil gas depleted in ∂¹³C beneath sequence boundaries. Positive C isotope excursions in the Lidam Miocene section can be tied to similar excursions in Qatar and UAE, where Sr isotope dates constrain the ages of the units. The overall C isotope profile at Lidam shows depleted values early in the Miocene to heavy values in the Middle Miocene, becoming lighter again in the late Miocene. The profile appears to follow the long-term global ∂¹³C curve. Incursion of meteoric groundwaters into the study area was driven by the long-term global sea level changes. Oxygen isotopes are surprisingly light, extending down to -12.5 ‰VPDB. The very light δ¹⁸O values of the meteoric waters may be explained by rainfall associated with enhanced Miocene Indian monsoons, and with far travelled air mass trajectories migrating across north Africa and from the polar region. / Ph. Ce travail de thèse concerne une transversale complète des Pyrénées centro-occidentales, où on a combiné la thermochronologie basse température (traces de fission sur apatites, TFA) avec une analyse structurale détaillée pour décrire les mouvements verticaux associés à l'évolution du système chevauchant, et pour déterminer l'influence de ce dernier sur le cycle sédimentation/enfouissement/exhumation des dépôts synorogéniques du bassin d'avant-chaine sud (bassins de Jaca et Ainsa). L'analyse TFA complète les données déjà publiées dans la Zone Axiale et la Zone Nord-Pyrénéenne, et constitue la première étude de ce genre dans un bassin d'avant-chaîne pyrénéen. Les données TFA sur la transversale du bassin sud-pyrénéen montrent une diminution vers le sud du degré d'effacement des traces de fission, traduisant la diminution vers le sud de la quantité d'enfouissement, supérieure à 5 km au nord et inférieure à 3 km au sud dans l'hypothèse un géotherme de 25°.km-1. Le contexte géologique montre que l'enfouissement est principalement lié à l'accumulation des dépôts synorogéniques. Les données TFA de la partie nord du bassin montrent un refroidissement d'âge Oligocène supérieur-Miocène inferieur (moyen). Par ailleurs, une nouvelle interprétation de profils de sismiques réflexion dans le bassin de Jaca montre que le chevauchement d'Oturia s'enracine dans le chevauchement de socle de Bielsa, responsable de l'exhumation tectonique hors-séquence du bord sud de la Zone Axiale au Miocène inférieur (-moyen) (Jolivet et al., 2007). Ces résultats attestent donc de l'exhumation tectonique hors-séquence au Miocène inférieur (Burdigalien- ?Langhien) de la partie nord du bassin d'avant-chaine sud-pyrénéen. Des données TFA obtenues dans la Zone Axiale et la Zone Nord-Pyrénéenne confirment la migration générale vers le sud du système chevauchant, et mettent également en évidence la réactivation tectonique hors-séquence du bord nord de la Zone Axiale à l'Oligocène terminal-Miocène inférieur. L'ensemble de ces résultats atteste donc de la réactivation en « pop-up » de la parties interne des Pyrénées centre-ouest à l'Oligocène supérieur-Miocène inférieur (Burdigalien- ?Langhien), postérieurement au scellement du front sud-pyrénéen (Aquitanien- ?Burdigalien) classiquement considéré comme marquant la fin de la compression pyrénéenne. Ces données nous ont permis de proposer un nouveau modèle d'évolution crustale des Pyrénées centro-occidentales en 3 grandes étapes : (i) du Crétacé supérieur à l'Eocène moyen, le prisme est caractérisé par une absence de relief, en lien avec l'inversion de structures extensives crétacées conduisant à l'accrétion de petites écailles crustales ; (ii) la période Eocène supérieur-Oligocène correspond à la collision continentale proprement dite, et est marquée par la création d'importants reliefs associés à l'accrétion d'épaisses unités crustales ; (iii) au Miocène inférieur, la partie interne du prisme pyrénéen est réactivée. / In this work on a complete transect of the west-central Pyrenees, we combine low temperature thermochronology (apatite fission tracks, AFT) with a detailed structural analysis to describe vertical movements related to the thrusting system evolution, and to determine the influence of the latter on the sedimentation/burial/exhumation cycle of the synorogenic deposits of the southern foreland basin (Jaca and Ainsa basins). AFT analysis from a transect of the south-Pyrenean basin show the southward decrease of the fission track reset level from the southern edge of the Axial Zone to the South-Pyrenean frontal thrust, implying the southwards decrease of the burial amount from more than 5km in the north to less than 3km in the south assuming an average geothermal gradient of 25°C.km-1. The structural setting of the Jaca basin attests that the burial of the synorogenic sediments was mainly due to the sedimentary accumulation. AFT data from the northern part of the basin display a late Oligocene-early (middle) Miocene cooling event. New interpretation of industrial seismic reflection profiles across the Jaca basin suggests that the Oturia thrust is rooted in the Bielsa basement thrust, responsible for the early (-middle) Miocene out-of-sequence tectonic reactivation of the southern flank of the Axial Zone (Jolivet et al., 2007). These results reveal a lower Miocene (Burdigalian -?Langhian) out-of-sequence episode of tectonic activity of the interior of the south-Pyrenean foreland basin. AFT data from the Axial Zone and the North-Pyrenean Zone confirm the general southward migration of the thrusting system, and also bring evidence of the late Oligocene-lower Miocene out-of-sequence tectonic reactivation of the northern flank of the Axial Zone. All these results attest of a late Oligocene-lower Miocene (Burdigalian-?Langhian) 'pop-up' reactivation of the inner part of the west-central Pyrenees, younger than the sealing of the south-Pyrenean front (Aquitanian-?Burdigalian) which is classically considered to mark the end of the Pyrenean compression. These results lead us to propose a new crustal scale evolution model of the west-central Pyrenees in 3 stages: (i) From the Late Cretaceous to the middle Eocene, the orogenic prism is characterised by the absence of relief, related to the inversion of Cretaceous extensional structures leading to the accretion of thin crustal units; (ii) The late Eocene-Oligocene stage corresponds to the continental collision, marke d by the creation of important relief associated with the accretion of thick crustal units; (iii) During the early Miocene, the inner part of the Pyrenean wedge is tectonically reactivated.

Die neogene Hebungsgeschichte der Patagonischen Anden im Kontext der Subduktion eines aktiven Spreizungszentrums

Das Phänomen der Subduktion eines aktiven Spreizungszentrums an der Südspitze Südamerikas ist seit langem bekannt. Eine Vielzahl von geologischen Beobachtungen wurden mit diesem Phänomen in Verbindung gebracht, trotzdem ist der genaue Mechanismus der Beeinflussung des aktiven Kontinentalrandes weitgehend unbekannt. <br /> <br /> Die Zusammenhänge zwischen den Subduktionsprozessen und der Entwicklung der patagonischen Anden zwischen 47&#176;S und 48&#176;S stehen im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchungen. Um eine detaillierte zeitliche Auflösung der zugrunde liegenden Prozesse untersuchen zu können, wurde die Entwicklung der Vorlandsedimentation, die thermische Entwicklung und die Heraushebung der Oberkruste des andinen Orogens untersucht und diese in Bezug zur Subduktion des Chile-Rückens gesetzt. <br /> <br /> Im Bereich von 47&#176;30&prime;S wurden die synorogenen Vorlandsedimente der Santa Cruz Formation sedimentologisch untersucht. Diese fluviatilen Sedimente wurden in einem reliefarmen Vorlandgebiet durch häufige Rinnenverlagerung und dem Aufbau von Rinnenumlagerungsgürteln in Kombination mit assoziierten großräumigen Überflutungsablagerungen akkumuliert. Sie stehen in einem engen Zusammenhang mit der orogenen Entwicklung im andinen Liefergebiet. Dies spiegelt sich in dem nach oben gröber werdenden Zyklus der Santa Cruz Formation wider. Die magnetostratigraphischen Untersuchungen einer 270 m mächtigen Sequenz aus der Basis der Santa Cruz Formation, die mit 329 Einzelproben aus 96 Probenpunkten beprobt wurde, ergab 7 Umkehrungen der geomagnetischen Feldrichtung. Mit Hilfe der geomagnetischen Polaritätszeitskala (CANDE AND KENT, 1995) konnte der untersuchte Abschnitt der Santa Cruz Formation zwischen 16.2 und 18.5 Ma datiert werden. Als Träger der Sedimentations-Remanenz konnten überwiegend Pseudoeinbereichs-Magentitpartikel und untergeordnet Hämatitpartikel identifiziert werden. <br /> <br /> An drei Profilen der Santa Cruz Formation wurden aus Sandsteinlagen unterschiedlicher stratigraphischer Position detritische Apatite mit Hilfe der thermochronologischen Spaltspurmethode untersucht. Die thermisch nicht rückgesetzten, detritischen Apatite spiegeln das Auftreten unterschiedlicher Altersdomänen im Liefergebiet der Sedimente wider. In der Kombination mit den geochemischen Gesamtgesteinsuntersuchungen der Sedimente und den petrographischen Untersuchungen der Sandsteine, die ein überwiegend andesitisch-vulkanisch geprägtes Liefergebiet widerspiegeln, kann nachgewiesen werden, dass die Erosion im Liefergebiet um 16.5 Ma in tiefere, deformierte Krustensegmente einschneidet. Dies bedeutet, dass aufgrund der Denudation im andinen Orogen erste Sockelgesteinseinheiten in den Bereich der Abtragung gelangen und dass dieser Eintrag um 12 bis 10 Ma ein Volumen einnimmt, das zu signifikanten Änderungen der Gesamtgesteinsgeochemie der Vorlandsedimente führt. <br /> <br /> Die thermochronologische Untersuchung von Apatiten aus rezenten topographischen Höhenprofilen aus der Kernzone der patagonischen Anden im Bereich von 47&#176;30&prime;S zeigen den Beginn einer beschleunigten Heraushebung des Orogens um 7.5 Ma. Aus diesen Untersuchungen kann eine Denudationsrate im Zeitraum der letzen 7 bis 8 Ma von 600 bis 650 m/Ma abgeschätzt werden. Die Modellierung der Apatit-Spaltspurergebnisse zeigt eine signifikante Temperaturerhöhung im Zeitraum zwischen 12 und 8 Ma um 20 bis 30&#176;C für diesen Krustenbereich, die mit der Subduktion des aktiven Chile-Rückens in diesem Bereich der Anden in Verbindung gebracht wird. <br /> <br /> Aus den gewonnen Daten kann ein Modell für die Entwicklung der patagonischen Anden seit dem frühen Miozän abgeleitet werden. In diesem Modell wird die orogene Entwicklung in den patagonischen Anden auf eine erhöhte Konvergenzrate zwischen der Nazca Platte und der Südamerikanischen Platte zurückgeführt, die für die Heraushebung und Denudation der Anden sowie für die damit verbundene Entwicklung im Vorlandbereich verantwortlich ist. Diese orogene Entwicklung wird in einer späten Phase durch die nordwärts wandernde Subduktion des aktiven Spreizungszentrums des Chile Rückens überprägt und beeinflusst. Das auf der Integration von geologischen, chronologischen sowie thermochronologischen Daten beruhende Modell kann zahlreiche geologische und geophysikalische Beobachtungen in diesem Bereich der südlichen Anden konsistent erklären. / The phenomenon of active ridge subduction to the continental margin of southern South America has been well known for a long time. A diversity of geological observations are related to this phenomenon, however, the exact mechanism of the influence of ridge subduction to the active continental margin is unknown.<br /> <br /> The aim of the present investigations is to determine connections between the subduction processes and the development of the Patagonian Andes between 47&#176;S and 48&#176;S. In order to reach that objective, the development of the foreland basin settings, the uplift of the upper crust of the Andean Orogeny, and the relation with the subduction of the Chile Ridge were investigated to obtain a detailed temporal resolution of the basic geological processes.<br /> <br /> Within the area of 47&#176;30'S the style and sedimentological pattern of the synorogenic foreland deposits of the Santa Cruz Formation were investigated. These fluvial sediments were accumulated in a foreland basin of small scale topography by frequent progradational avulsions, which were accompanied by deposition of avulsion-belt sediments associated with thick overbank deposits. <br /> <br /> The upward-coarsening is best explained by progradation of fan deposits during an eastwards advancement of the deformation in the western Andes at that time. <br /> <br /> Magnetostratigraphic investigations of a total of 329 drill cores, which were collected at 96 sites, show seven major reversals in a thick stratigraphic section of 270 m from the base of the Santa Cruz Formation. A comparison with the geomagnetic polarity timescale of Cande and Kent (1995) gives a sedimentation age between 16.2 and 18.5 Ma for the investigated section of the Santa Cruz Formation. The investigation of rock-magnetism predominantly indicates magnetite and subordinated haematite as the dominant carrier of remanence. All results from hysteresis data determination cluster in the coarse pseudo-single (PSD) to multi-domain (MD) grain size range of the Day Diagram (DAY ET AL. 1977)<br /> <br /> Fission track analysis was applied to detrital apatite of sandstone samples at different stratigraphic positions within three sections of the Santa Cruz Formation. The fission track ages of the not reseted detrital apatite are assumed to be related to the age of the sediment provenance area. In combination with sandstone petrographic investigations, which indicate a dominant andesitic volcanic source for the sediment and geochemical whole rock investigations can be shown, that the erosion cuts into the basement of the source area at 16.5 Ma. This means, that due to the denudation in the Andean Orogen first deformed basement units arrive into the sedimentation cycle. In the range of 12 to 10 Ma this sediment input attained such a volume, that the whole-rock geochemistry of the sediments was changed .<br /> <br /> The thermochronological investigations of apatites from vertical profiles covering the largest elevation range of the central zone of the Patagonian Andes within the range of 47&#176;30'S show the beginning of an accelerated cooling and related uplift phase of the orogen at approximately 7.5 Ma. The calculated denudation rate in the period of the last 7 to 8 Ma ranges from 600 to 650 m/Ma. The modelling of apatite fission-track data shows a significant reheating in the range of 20 to 30&#176;C between 12 and 8 Ma for the upper crust. This is interpreted as an influence of the active Chile rise mid-oceanic spreading center on the overriding plate.<br /> <br /> The modelling of the apatite fission-track results shows a significant rise in temperature between 12 and 8 Ma around 20 to 30&#176;C for this crust area, which is associated with the subduction of the active Chile back in this area of the Andes. <br /> <br /> A model has been derived from the obtained data to explain the evolution of the Patagonian Andes since the early Miocene. In this model, orogeny is attributed to the increasing convergence rate between the Nazca plate and South America and its response due to uplift and denudation of the Patagonian Andes and the development of the adjacent foreland basin. In a late phase, orogeny is influenced and overprinted by the northward migration of the Chile ridge subduction. The model consistently explains many of the geological and geophysical observations.
