From Paris to Sharm el-Sheikh: : A Framing Analysis of Climate Justice / Från Paris till Sharm el-Sheikh: : En Framinganalys av Klimaträttvisa

Bryntesson, Anton January 2023 (has links)
While UNFCCC negotiations generally have adopted a neoliberal version of the contestedconcept of climate justice in the last 30 years, the acceptance of the Loss and Damage Fundduring COP27 indicates a possible shift in the climate justice discourse. To examine possibleshifts in the portrayal of climate justice, statements delivered by state representatives fromfive coalitions during COP21 and COP27 have been analyzed using a qualitative framinganalysis. The coalitions represent both victims of climate change and the causers of it. Theanalysis has been based on a theoretical framework consisting of six different climate justiceframes: neoliberal, distributive, intergenerational, rights-based, transformative, and ecologicaljustice. During COP21, a clear division appeared between ‘victim coalitions’ who portrayedtheir own vulnerability and partly described the injustice of climate change, and the ‘causercoalitions’ who foremost used neoliberal framings of the issue. During COP27, the divisionwas less obvious. Rights-based framings increased in prominence, but fragmentation withinthe coalitions was observed. The controversy did no longer seem to revolve aroundportraying vulnerability. Rather the division was split between the critical states demanding atransformative shift in the global climate regime, and the uncritical ones. The study indicatesthat alternative justice norms continue to break new grounds in the UNFCCC framework, butthe specific implications on politics are yet to be seen.

Rainbow Flags and Rubber Bullets : A Framing Analysis of LGBTI+ and Pride in Contemporary Turkey / Regnbågsflaggor och Gummikulor: : En Framinganalys av HBTQI+ och Pridei Samtida Turkiet

Sjöstrand, Julia January 2023 (has links)
The LGBTI+ community in Turkey are regularly subjected to discrimination, threats andviolence. This study aims to analyze how two Turkish newspapers cover LGBTI+ in Turkey, with a time frame of the last ten years and a sub-focus on the ban of Istanbul pride in 2015. Ipresent a qualitative approach to the study based on framing analysis regarding mediacoverage. The analysis applies to articles and citations within these, using four different‘frames’ adapted from previous research; equality frame, victim frame, morality frame andpropaganda of homosexuality frame. The results show a decrease of LGBTI+ coveragewithin the examined time frame and a variation of frame usage. There are indications that thepride ban of 2015 may have been a shifting point for framing regarding both articles andcitations. The results also uncover a substantial decrease in the quantity of coverage on thetopic. The results of the two newspapers differ, indicating different media outlets portrayLGBTI+ people in diverse ways.

Protestní paradigma: Rámcování hnutí Black Lives Matter a nastolování agendy v českých médiích / The Protest Paradigm: Framing of Black Lives Matter movement and Agenda-setting in Czech Media

Vogl, Marek January 2022 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the framing of the Black Lives Matter movement and related protests in the Czech news media. The aim of this work is to reveal the way in which the Czech media informed about the Black Lives Matter movement with the help of quantitative content framing analysis. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the theory of social and media construction of reality by Berger and Luckmann, which plays the role of an overarching theory. It also deals with the agenda-setting theory, which it expands with the concept of framing. The agenda-setting theory describes the ability of the mass media to influence the significance of topics in the eyes of the public. The theoretical part also describes a brief history of the Black Lives Matter movement and the events that led to its emergence. Furthermore, the relationship of the mass media to racism is introduced and the concept of the protest paradigm is introduced. The work then describes the previous findings of the protest paradigm, which are then used in the analytical part. The methodological part then presents the research goal, questions and hypotheses, defines the sample set and the research method used, including the characteristics of individual variables. The analytical part of the thesis presents the results of the...

A crise hídrica da região metropolitana de São Paulo e o jornal Folha de S. Paulo / The metropolitan region of São Paulo water crisis and the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo

Camargo Neto, Lauro de 07 December 2018 (has links)
The analysis of the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper on the water crisis that hit a metropolitan region of São Paulo in the years 2014 and 2015, was aimed at identifying the environmental discourse of the journal. Through a survey of the news, between 2013 and 2016, to see also coverage of the issue in the pre and post-crisis annals, and the use of the Critical Discourse Analysis and Framing Analysis, collecting data from when, by whom and in which category it is news, it was possible to identify the content brought by the discourse of the newspaper about the theme. The Folha de S. Paulo discourse is aimed at the utility of environmental resources, making itself available to be used by human society, by showing the causes of the water crisis are low rainfall values and excessive domiciliary use, neglecting others aspects such as public policies for the expansion of water collection and the expansion of reservoirs, awareness of the population, protection of watersheds of the basins, among other factors that contribute to a total understanding of the environmental problem. This guilty approach to consumption and pluviometric data protects managers on the ideia that they can\'t predict the low rainfall. Therefore, the newspaper does not make a coverage that allows the reader to understand the complexity of water supply in the metropolitan region of São Paulo as well as a service provided by the environment to society. It is necessary for the media to overcome this utilitarian view of the natural environment, debating it as an integral and essential part of human society, so that the population also has a correct understanding of the natural environment for its survival.

Behemoth of the High North : Framing of the Arctic Challenges in Russian News Media

Johansson, Daniel, Florhed, Jacob January 2019 (has links)
Climate change is often presented as amain driver of the geostrategic changes that are taking place in the Arctic.Russia is regarded as a key actorin this changing geopolitical landscape. Several scholarssuggests thatRussiausesstatenewsmedia to mediate a Kremlin-approved idea of the worldtowards an international audience.Thepurpose ofthis study is to analyze how the Russian newspaper RT (former Russia Today) is framing climate change in the Arctic. To identifycategories within the material,we have used a quantitative content analysis, and to analyze the framing we have used a framing analysis based on Robert Entman’s principles. We found that the largest categorieswere ‘climate’, ‘energy’and ‘conflict’. The framing consists of a hostile and conflict-oriented view of the west(mainly America)in the ‘energy’ and ‘conflict’-categories, while a more cooperative framing appears within the ‘climate’category. We also found that there aresomeinterestsin developing the Northern Sea Route, which may be a more realistic goal for Russia than energy extraction in the Arctic. There is a need for more research on this subject, to be able to discuss the future of the Arctic

Detecting Political Framing Shifts and the Adversarial Phrases within\\ Rival Factions and Ranking Temporal Snapshot Contents in Social Media

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Social Computing is an area of computer science concerned with dynamics of communities and cultures, created through computer-mediated social interaction. Various social media platforms, such as social network services and microblogging, enable users to come together and create social movements expressing their opinions on diverse sets of issues, events, complaints, grievances, and goals. Methods for monitoring and summarizing these types of sociopolitical trends, its leaders and followers, messages, and dynamics are needed. In this dissertation, a framework comprising of community and content-based computational methods is presented to provide insights for multilingual and noisy political social media content. First, a model is developed to predict the emergence of viral hashtag breakouts, using network features. Next, another model is developed to detect and compare individual and organizational accounts, by using a set of domain and language-independent features. The third model exposes contentious issues, driving reactionary dynamics between opposing camps. The fourth model develops community detection and visualization methods to reveal underlying dynamics and key messages that drive dynamics. The final model presents a use case methodology for detecting and monitoring foreign influence, wherein a state actor and news media under its control attempt to shift public opinion by framing information to support multiple adversarial narratives that facilitate their goals. In each case, a discussion of novel aspects and contributions of the models is presented, as well as quantitative and qualitative evaluations. An analysis of multiple conflict situations will be conducted, covering areas in the UK, Bangladesh, Libya and the Ukraine where adversarial framing lead to polarization, declines in social cohesion, social unrest, and even civil wars (e.g., Libya and the Ukraine). / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Computer Science 2018

The research analyses the journalistic coverage of issues related to president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva s government (PT) carried out by Jornal Nacional of Rede Globo, the most important Brazilian news-bulletin. By means of analyzing the framing of reformas (social security and tax policy), the adjustment of the interests' rates and Waldomiro Diniz case, issues directly or indirectly related with Lula's government, it is verified how Jornal Nacional exaggerates or attenuates favorable or unfavorable aspects about federal government in order to make them more or less apparent. At the end of study, the conclusion is that news-bulletin of Rede Globo conducts quite uncritical frames about the federal government, phenomenon perceived in other studies about previous governments.
