This thesis discusses Utopian thought and compares the Utopias of Plato, Sir Thomas More, Sir Francis Bacon, and Jonathan Swift in the areas of government, education, and social problems.

Ce texte accompagne l’exposition Remplir les conditions qui aura été présentée au Lieu, centre en art actuel à Québec du 25 septembre au 4 octobre 2020. Par une approche descriptive, les trois premiers chapitres de ce texte sont consacrés au décorticage de trois œuvres réalisées entre l’automne 2018 et l’automne 2020, soit Sans titre, Résidence ouverte et Une et trois sculptures. L’essentiel de ce qui est proposé vise à montrer par quoi ces sculptures, construites à la main avec des matériaux ordinaires et des méthodes simples, prennent corps. Ces trois chapitres se conduisent et se construisent au fur et à mesure de la découverte d’aspects qui, suivant les prolongements qui en sont extraits, sont autant de poignées par lesquelles se saisir de l’œuvre. Les réflexions faites à partir de ces œuvres préparent l’appréciation du projet Remplir les conditions, dont il est question par anticipation dans le quatrième chapitre. Alors que le projet Remplir les conditions est en phase de développement, ce chapitre soulève des réflexions et des pistes de travail potentielles. L’exposition Remplir les conditions aura pris forme lors d’une résidence de création tenue au Lieu du 11 au 25 septembre 2020.

Este trabalho consiste no estudo da noção de gênio em Fernando Pessoa. Delimita por objetivo a identificação e análise de seu alcance e grau de penetração tanto nas formulações estéticas quanto poéticas do autor. O estudo se divide em três frentes, que definem a metodologia utilizada e o recorte do corpus investigado. A primeira aborda o ethos do homem de gênio nas cartas a João Gaspar Simões, Adolfo Casais Monteiro e Armando Côrtes-Rodrigues. A segunda frente do trabalho propõe a análise dos textos teóricos de Pessoa sob a perspectiva do gênio, pormenorizadamente os escritos sobre a questão Shakespeare-Bacon. A terceira frente se concentrará no estudo das leituras que Fernando Pessoa realizou do historiador e ensaísta escocês Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881), mais especificamente da obra On Heroes, Hero-Workship,and The Heroic in History. / This work consists of a study of the notion of genius in Fernando Pessoa. This research delimits as its goal the identification and analysis of Fernando Pessoas genius both in his aesthetic formulations and his poetics. The present work is divided into three sections, each defined by the methodology used and the selection of the corpus being investigated. The first part addresses the ethos of the man of genius in the letters to João Gaspar Simões, Adolfo Casais Monteiro, and Armando Côrtes-Rodrigues. The second part aims to analyze Pessoas theoretical texts from the perspective of the genius, carefully examining the writings that reflect on Shakespeare-Bacon. The third part will focus on Fernando Pessoas readings of the Scottish historian and essayist Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), specifically of Carlyles work On Heroes, Hero-Workship, and The Heroic in History.

A presente pesquisa trata da atualização de impulsos utópicos através da trajetória poética do artista belga-mexicano Francis Alÿs e de seu entrelaçamento com a noção de direito à cidade desenvolvida por Henri Lefebvre. Mais especificamente, questiona o potencial de reflexão e de transformação que essa produção artística apresenta em relação à nossa forma de pensar e de ocupar o espaço público, tanto de um ponto de vista temporal quanto espacial. O estudo tem como objeto empírico ações poéticas de Alÿs realizadas em grandes cidades ocidentais, majoritariamente latino-americanas, entre o final do século XX e início do XXI. Tais ações são aqui debatidas frente à produção teórica de autores cujas publicações datam desse mesmo período: Gilles Deleuze e Félix Guattari, Jacques Rancière, Michel de Certeau e Néstor García Canclini. Os conceitos que fundamentam toda a pesquisa, no entanto, tais como espaço público, direito à cidade e impulso utópico, remontam a dois pensadores do início do século XX: Henri Lefebvre e Ernst Bloch. O diálogo entre teoria e prática configura a espinha dorsal desta dissertação, que busca em obras artísticas a atualização dos conceitos trazidos pelos autores citados e a reverberação dessas práticas na teoria. / This research approaches the updating of utopian impulses through the poetic trajectory of the Belgian-Mexican artist Francis Alÿs and his intertwining with the notion of the right to the city developed by Henri Lefebvre. More specifically, it questions the potential for reflection and transformation that this artistic production presents in relation to our way of thinking and occupying public spaces, both from a time and spatial point of view. The empirical object is Francis Alÿs oeuvre carried out in large western cities, mostly Latin American, between the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first. These actions are discussed facing the theoretical contributions from authors who are contemporary to Francis Alÿs: Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Jacques Rancière, Michel de Certeau and Néstor García Canclini. The concepts that underlie all the research, however, such as public space, right to the city and utopian impulse, go back to two thinkers from the early twentieth century: Henri Lefebvre and Ernst Bloch. The dialogue between theory and practice, seeking in artistic works the updating of the concepts brought by the cited authors and aiming to identify the reverberation of these practices in theory, forms the backbone of this master’s dissertation.

Upset by the divorce between nature and grace provoked by the preeminence of irrationality contained in contemporary thought, the author encounters the decline and lack of hope that imprint the modern man regarding the concept of objective and universal truth. In defiance of this very declaration, Francis Schaeffer tries to rescue the balance that should involve the elements in the relation faith and reason without, however, inclining towards rationalisms nor even, on the other hand, toward a religious existentialism. Verifying the crisis and dilemma in which the modern man finds himself in philosophy, arts, general culture and theology, engendered by the respective abandonment of universal concepts and by the adoption of a post-modern perspective of a fragmented reality, Francis Schaeffer proposes a confrontation of this crisis from an epistemic source found only in the Sacred Scriptures. Herewith, the objective of this research is to demonstrate that the author tries to compose his proposed solution exclusively aligned with the Biblical Christianity, keeping in mind the influence that he received from the presupposition and principles of the reformed thought. Thus, one tries to identify how Francis Schaeffer applies the reformed view regarding the unified field of knowledge in his diagnosis and proposal for confronting the paradigm crisis, to the point of claiming the inexistence of the epistemological crisis for the reformers, as well as for the biblical. Nonetheless, in order to solve the actual epistemological crisis in which the modern man finds himself, the author highlights the vital and imperious importance regarding the epistemic response emerging from the reformed concept of Biblical Revelation, which ends up, wherefore, offering an answer equally metaphysical and moral, also necessary for dissolving the paradigm crisis. / Francis Schaeffer é considerados por muitos um dos maiores cristãos do século XX. Contrariado com o divórcio entre a natureza e a graça , provocado pela preeminência da irracionalidade que envolve o pensamento contemporâneo, o autor se depara com o declínio e a desesperança que marcam o homem moderno quanto ao conceito de verdade objetiva e universal. Em oposição a esta constatação própria, Francis Schaeffer busca resgatar o equilíbrio que deve envolver os elementos da relação fé e razão sem, contudo, inclinar-se para o racionalismo ou, por outro lado, polarizar-se para o existencialismo religioso. Ao constatar a crise e dilema em que o homem moderno se encontra nas áreas da filosofia, artes, cultura geral, e teologia, gerados pelo abandono do conceito de universais e pela adoção da perspectiva pós-moderna da realidade fragmentada, Francis Schaeffer propõe o enfrentamento desta crise a partir da fonte epistêmica encontrada somente nas Escrituras Sagradas. Deste modo, é objetivo desta pesquisa demonstrar que o autor compõe sua proposta de solução exclusivamente pautada no Cristianismo Bíblico tendo em vista a influência que recebeu dos pressupostos e princípios do pensamento reformado. Assim, busca-se identificar como Francis Schaeffer aplica a visão reformada acerca do campo unificado do conhecimento em seu diagnóstico e proposta de enfrentamento da crise de paradigmas, a ponto de afirmar a inexistência da crise epistemológica para os reformadores, bem como para os cristãos bíblicos. Todavia, a fim de solucionar a atual tensão epistemológica em que o homem moderno se encontra, o autor ressalta a importância imprescindível e imperiosa quanto à resposta epistêmica partir do conceito reformado de Revelação Bíblica, o que acaba, por conseguinte, fornecendo igualmente a resposta metafísica e moral, também necessárias para o esvanecendo da crise de paradigmas.

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the social and cultural revolution in post-World War One American society on gender relationships in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novels and a selection of his short stories. In his fictional works, Fitzgerald becomes a kind of social and cultural historian, reflecting the fundamental changes that began to occur in the 1920s. There were many factors that contributed to this Jazz-Age revolution in "manners and morals": the emancipation of women, giving rise to the American New Woman; the influence of Freud and his psychoanalytic theories on the already blossoming sexual revolution; and the mechanization and commercialization of all aspects of life in the machine age, drastically altering the way men and women had traditionally thought, behaved, and, communicated with one another.
