Les mondes du voyageur : une épistémologie de l'exploration (XVIème - XVIIIème siècles) / The worlds of the traveller : an epistemology of exploration (16th-18th centuries)Gallegos Gabilondo, Simon 22 June 2016 (has links)
This study examines the issue of exploration, as it stands in the travel chronicles that have forged modern world cartography between the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, favouring the analysis of epistemological questions between the new and the unknown. Through an examination of this corpus about America, and the geographical and political speculation about the Southern Land, it shows, on the one hand, that a regime of spatiality begins with these texts; on the other, that its history is also the history of philosophy, as far as it conceived itself on the model of exploration in the baconian tradition until D’Alembert in the 18th century. It identifies the historical foundation of geographical images used in the modern thought, as well as continuity among knowledge production and the production of a space to discover by exploration travels, about which, unlike Blumenberg’s metaphorology, Foucault’s archaeology founds a limit. Then, it questions the exploration’s anthropological horizon of meaning, particularly by the controversy of a giant human species in the New World, and examines the scientific appropriation of this literary figure in the natural history from Acosta to Buffon. Lastly, after a look on the ambiguous relation between the ageing world thesis and the epistemological openness of possible objects of exploration, it proposes an analysis of the importance of the gigantum demonstratio in Vico’s philosophical program.

This thesis aims to perform a spatial and temporal analysis of the gully of Grito Stream, located in the urban perimeter of the city of Rancharia, and present the proposals to control this peri-urban erosion. This gully presents evidence of development dating back to the 1960s, recent episodes of damage to urban infrastructure and the presence of active erosive processes at the banks. To present a geographic analysis of this case of erosion process are presented aspects of land use history in the municipality of Rancharia and physical-geographic aspects and land use changes in the watershed of the Grito Stream and in detail scale the cartographical information on the gully. In view of this case of erosive process that is perpetuated for five decades, in this thesis detailed geographic information of the gully is presented from data collected in topographic surveys with geodesic equipment. For twenty-four months, a topographic monitoring of borehole plots was carried out, where a ridge erosion greater than 1.5 m was observed in four points and an average of 0.85 m, in all the monitored plot there was a loss of 305.9 square meters of area. In relation to the erosion process control proposals, buses with plant fiber (Bambusa bambos L.) were implanted in an experimental plot with soil level monitoring by means of erosion pins, and from a comparative analysis there is a greater upper soil movement in the experimental plot without the use of buses. Based on the measurements of soil movement levels and soil density data, estimates of soil loss were presented in the experimental plots. In the area of the experimental plot with barriers native plant species were planted with the intention of contributing to the recovery of the degraded area. In this sense, based on detailed geographic information on the area degraded by the gully of the Grito Stream, the thesis aims to contribute in the planning of future measures for an effective recovery of this area in Rancharia. From the empirical proposal presented in this thesis are presented ways to rethink the philosophy of Bacon and his contributions on Geography. / FAPESP: 2013/05664-4

This dissertation aims to propose a means of access to the diaries of Francis Pelichek which updates discussions concerning the status of this object in the context of art history in Rio Grande do Sul, removing it from its sealed position within history. Aware of the heterogeneity of its records and its simultaneous condition of document and work of art, we propose to problematize the object, as much as a work of art and document and bring it closer to the idea of file, having as horizon the ideas of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida on the term "file". Therefore, it is necessary a deep analysis of the records that compose the diaries, as well as the link between the object and the personal archives of Pelichek, from field research at the Historical Archive of the Art Institute of UFRGS. We seek, at the end of this work, at least to have established a basis for future diaries’ analysis from different points of view and we hope that our efforts to move this object enable more insights on each of its elements of record.

Walking to Magdalena: Place and Person in Tohono O'odham Songs, Sticks, and StoriesJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation examines songs, sticks, and stories pertaining to Tohono O'odham pilgrimages to Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico, the home of their patron saint, Saint Francis. In the sense that Tohono O'odham travel to Magdalena in order to sustain their vital and long-standing relationship with their saint, these journeys may be understood as a Christian pilgrimages. However, insofar as one understands this indigenous practice as a Christian pilgrimage, it must also be noted that Tohono O'odham have made Christianity their own. The findings show that Tohono O'odham have embedded, or emplaced, Christianity within their ancestral landscapes, and that they have done so in a variety of ways through songs, staffs, and stories. This work emphasizes connections between O'odham processes of producing places and persons. Songs associated with the journey to Magdalena, which contain both geographical and historical knowledge, foreground the significance of place and the movements of various persons at the places mentioned within them. The staffs of O'odham walkers, like other sticks, similarly contain both geographical and historical knowledge, evoking memories of past journeys in the present and the presence of Magdalena. Staffs are also spoken of and treated as persons, or at least as an extension of O'odham walkers. O'odham stories of good and bad walkers illustrate contested O'odham ideologies of socially sanctioned movements. Finally, this dissertation concludes by demonstrating some of the ways in which O'odham senses of their own history diverge from academic models of Tohono O'odham history and the history of Christianity in the Americas. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Religious Studies 2013

FLOW FIELD IN A HIGH HEAD FRANCIS TURBINE DRAFT TUBE DURING TRANSIENT OPERATIONSGoyal, Rahul January 2017 (has links)
Hydroelectricity plays an important role to balance the stability of grid network. In order to improve the stability of presently high loaded grids, hydropower plants are being operated over a wide range of operations and experiencing frequent start-stop, load rejection, and load acceptance. The turbines need to sustain sudden change in their operating condition to balance the grid frequency. Francis turbines have been widely used because of their wider operating range and higher stability in operation during rapid load variation. This has resulted in severe damage to the turbines as they are not normally designed to operate under such transient conditions. Several low and high frequency pressure fluctuations prevail during transients operating conditions. Generally, wall pressure measurements are performed which may not provide sufficient information to investigate the flow instabilities related to these fluctuations. Thus, the main objective of the present work is to simplify and perform optical measurements in a turbine during transient operating conditions to investigate the flow field. The measurements have been performed at the Water Power Laboratory using a high head model Francis turbine. The turbine is a 1:5.1 scale down model of a prototype operating at the Tokke Power Plant, Norway. The model runner diameter, net head, and discharge at the best efficiency point (BEP) were 0.349 m, 12 m, and 0.2 m3 s-1, respectively. A total ten pressure sensors were mounted at different locations namely, turbine inlet, vaneless space, and draft tube. The data were acquired at a sampling rate of 5 kHz. The instruments and sensors have been calibrated according to guidelines available in IEC standards. The determined total uncertainty in the measurement of hydraulic efficiency was ±0.15% at BEP condition. The velocity measurements in the draft tube cone were performed using a 2D PIV system and the images were sampled at a rate of 40 Hz. Steady state measurements were carried out considering the realistic design and off-design operating conditions of the prototype turbine. Therefore, the angular speed of the runner was maintained constant for all steady state conditions during the measurements. The maximum hydraulic efficiency (92.4%) was observed at nED = 0.18, QED = 0.15, and a = 9.8º, which is named BEP. It is observed that the turbine experiences significant pressure fluctuations at the vaneless space, runner, and the draft tube. The fluctuations due to rotor-stator interaction (RSI) were observed to be most dominating at high load condition, however, fluctuations due to the rotating vortex rope (RVR) at part load (PL) condition. Two different modes (synchronous and asynchronous) modes of vortex rope are observed at PL condition of the turbine. An asymmetry in the flow leaving the runner was detected at both design and off-design conditions, with a stronger effect during off-design operating condition. Numerical simulations of the model turbine were carried out at PL operating condition. The simulations were performed using two turbulence models, standard k-ε and SST k-ω, with high-resolution advection scheme. The numerical pressure values obtained with both standard k-ε model and SST k-ω showed a small difference with the experimental values. The amplitudes of numerical pressure values were higher (~2.8%) in the vaneless space and lower (~5.0%) in the draft tube than the experimental values. The frequencies of the RSI and RVR were well captured in the turbine but the amplitudes were overestimated. During load rejection from BEP to PL, the plunging mode of the vortex rope was observed to appear first in the system than that of the rotating mode. Whereas during the load acceptance from PL to BEP, both the modes were observed to disappear simultaneously from the system. In the velocity data, the axial velocity only contributed to the development of the plunging mode and radial velocity to the rotating mode. The region of low velocity, stagnation point, flow separation, recirculation, oscillating flow and high axial velocity gradients were well captured in the system during the transients. The induced high-velocity gradients during the load acceptance from BEP to HL was observed to develop a vortex core in the draft tube. During startup and shutdown, the guide vanes angular position was moved from one to another steady state condition to achieve the minimum load condition of the turbine. At this condition, the generator of the turbine was magnetized at the synchronous speed during startup and shutdown, respectively. The frequency of wave propagation was observed to vary with the runner angular speed during startup and complete shutdown of the turbine. Comparatively high-pressure fluctuations in the draft tube were observed during the guide vane movement from the high discharge conditions. Some unsteady phenomena such as the formation of dead velocity zone, backward flow, and flow oscillations were observed during startup and shutdown of the turbine. The current work has been also used to continue a series of workshops, i.e., Francis-99. The first workshop was held on December 2014 with the cooperation of LTU and NTNU. The measurements performed in this work were used for the second workshop which was held on December 2016. The investigations presented in this thesis will be further explored in the third workshop scheduled for December 2018.
