This paper aims on demonstrating the influence of Traditional Japanese Architecture on the West, pointing out the direct reletions between the Tradicional Japanese Houses and the first modern houses in the begining of 20th century, through the analysis of its concepts, techniques and composition. Firstly the history, the spatial conception and the elements of the Tradicional Japanese Architecture are presented in order to understand how japanese perceive the physical world and its psychological aspects. Some work of western architect Frank Lloyd Wright, which demmonstrate the influences of his contact with Japan, are selected to follow, therefore stablishins a paralel between Japanese Traditional and modern western architecture. Finaly, an understanding of a new product is pursued, when the tradidional japanese expression and technics merge with western form and space.

The main purpose of this dissertation is the analysis of residential projects of modern architect Frank Lloyd Wright by the graphical method. According to Wright, Organic Architecture has principles, where projects are based on. The analysis was carried through by the graphic method of investigation and diagrams. For that reason, we adopt some analysis item that privileged the systematic study of the principles of his Organic Architecture, in order to create interpretative synthetic diagrams. Fourteen significant residences had been selected among all the construct projects, which represent about 400 residences constructed in the total, and divided in three phases: Prairie, Textile Block and Usonia residences. For finest understanding of the analyses of the projects in first and the second part of the dissertation, texts had been elaborated which establish a basic theoretical base from writings of the architect, theoreticians, critics and his customers and apprentices. The individual analyses had created interpretative diagrams that disclose how they were materialized, in forms and architectural spaces, the principles of his Architecture. The diagrams in such a way disclose of the individuality of each project and its peculiarities, as the present language in the set of the projects of each phase. The comparative tables disclose the transformations of the residential project of Wright in each phase, as well as in all the set of each project, where we can clearly notice the mature and consolidation of a genuinely North American architecture. The comparative analysis brings clear the wealth and variety of a coherent architecture and based on the same principles. This humanist architecture contributed at the same time for a new conceptualization of the space without disrespecting the nature, the region and the individuals / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes

Spelarbeteende – Gamer mode : Hur framställningen utav uppgifter påverkar spelarens beteende / Gaming behavior – Gamer mode : How the framing of tasks affects the player’s behaviorEriksson, Anton January 2017 (has links)

A Skin-Deep Analysis on Deconstruction: How Transforming the Modern Surface Transformed Notions on GenderYoung, Elise K 01 January 2016 (has links)
While focusing on high fashion and architecture, this thesis explores an aesthetic transition between the early 20th century’s “modern” style and the later 20th century style of “deconstruction.” We believe the style of “deconstruction” revolutionized visual metaphors for modern gender identity through the manipulation and experimentation of surfaces. These metaphors were accomplished through transformation relationships between surface, structure, and ornament. This study exclusively uses examples from women’s fashion and building façades for its analysis

Criticism between scientificity and ideology : theoretical impasses in F.R. Leavis and P. MachereyEzroura, Mohammed January 1990 (has links)
While focussing on the metaphor of scientificity in Leavis's and Macherey's writings, this dissertation addresses other questions central to criticism, cultural theory, and the philosophy of science. Whereas Leavis opposes scientificity, Macherey proposes "scientific criticism" as imperative to theoretical practice. Between the two critics, scientificity reveals its major metamorphoses.
This study is divided into four major parts. Part One situates the concept of scientificity in the modern debate between critics and philosophers of science. I compare their problematization of scientificity to the way this notion has been represented in literary criticism. The debate blurs the boundary between scientific and literary knowledge, and brings the question of ideology in scientific discourse to the fore. Scientificity is thus bound with ideology as an epistemological practice.
Part two focusses on Leavis's rejection of scientificity. In three chapters here I investigate the significance of Leavis's definition of "organic culture," "civilization," "science," and "criticism." These are all
rooted in Arnold's cultural paradigm, which privileges a traditional order. Leavis's opposition to "theory," "science," and "philosophy" problematizes his principles of "precision," "analysis," and "standards." His controversies with CP. Snow's scientism and with Marxism reveal his concern with theory and scientific epistemology. His defence of "ambiguity," and "impossibility of definition" also makes his framework confront a theoretical impasse that is revealed by a desire to theorize criticism—Leavis's duty towards society— and a fear of theory and science, perceived as destructive.
Part Three, comprising three chapter, considers Macherey's scientific criticism. His notions of the "structure of absence" and "symptomatic reading" are central to his theorization of criticism, science, and ideology. These are formulated through Freud's categories of dream analysis, Saussure's notion of difference, and Althusser's conception of ideology. For Macherey, scientific criticism negates ideology. But his emphasis on "absence" as constitutive of scientificity brings his epistemology to a theoretical impasse that resembles Leavis's. Macherey's anchoring of meaning in economic structures, in ideology, and in Marxism as "science," problematizes his scientific project because it abandons "absence."
Part Four concludes the dissertation by investigating ways in which Leavis and Macherey illustrate the importance of an epistemological phenomenon in literary studies: criticism's struggle with scientificity. Whether opposed or defended, scientificity has helped criticism to emulate the hegemonic discourse of science and to combat rival critical strategies. However, to dispel "scientific" delusions, criticism must scrutinize its affiliation with ideology both in scientific method and in theory. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Aplikácia makroobozretnostnej politiky v USA / Application of macroprudential policy in the USHusarčík, Marek January 2015 (has links)
The master thesis deals with macroprudential policy and its application in the US. The thesis is mainly focused on the large reform of the financial market in the US known as Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The main objective of the thesis is to analyse the impact of this act on the financial market in the US. The thesis is divided into four chapters, which are logically connected. The first chapter describes the institutional structure of the regulation and supervision over the financial market in the US, with the emphasis on the organisational structure of FED. The second chapter deals with macroprudential policy from the theoretical point of view with the focus on the tools of the policy and its interaction with other policies. It also covers the incentives which lead into putting this policy into practice. The third chapter focuses on the causes of the financial crisis and particularly on the response to the crisis in the form of Dodd-Frank Act. The final chapter analyses the impact of particular measures contained in Dodd-Frank Act on the US financial market. Analysing this the thesis concludes whether these measure were successful from the perspective of objectives that Dodd-Frank Act wanted to meet.

Frank Zappa and Mikhail Bakhtin: Rabelais's carnival made contemporaryAntinora, Sarah Hill 01 January 2008 (has links)
For this project, the author uses Bakhtin's theory of carnival to illuminate Zappa's sound and rhetoric. The author hopes that by using this theoretical lens allows audiences to understand Zappa's choices in subject matter. Those who can see his work as satire and understand the use of carnivalesque techniques in challenging authority see the genius in his work.
