Previous issue date: 2007-02-10 / The alterations to the way knowledge is produced and the great amount of documents stimulate and pressurize into changes in cataloguing. In this context, a theoretical model for cataloguing known as Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) was published in 1998. Generally speaking, the cataloguing codes are divided into two parts: one related to description and another to the access points. This work aims to analyse the procedures to choose the access points of personal responsibility of the bibliographic records, in order to relate them to the concepts shown in the FRBR. The present work is characterized as a theoretical search and the investigation resorts to deductive approach to analyse the rules and the internationally accepted principles utilized in the choice of the access points. This search also has an empirical part to collect factual data about the use of cataloguing rules and to compare the registers with or without the use of the FRBR. As a result, it is observed that the cataloguing rules are still directed to the impressed catalogues. However, the concepts presented by the FRBR are related to the automated catalogues. The FRBR enlarge the dimensions of the responsabilities about the content of work and expression, and they translate the social changes to the possibilities of information representation in the bibliographic records. With the FRBR the rules have to be stipulated to facilitate the user activities. This implies in the review of the cataloguing rules, mainly the ones related to the choice of the access point. In this way, the professional of information will pay more efforts to determine which the access points for the user are. Among the uncountable impacts caused by the FRBR, perhaps the most important are to resume the discussion about the cataloguing in theoretical level and to highlight the importance of intellectual work of professional of information. Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records).

The information space sstructurde by the digital approach : development of the service offering in academic librariesBourdenet, Philippe 05 December 2013 (has links)
The catalog takes up a special position in the supply of services of academic libraries, as a pivot for the intermediary between users and information professionals who carry the responsibility for building up collections. For 10 years, through a serious crisis, they’ve been seeing their patrons preferring the general or commercial search engines. The Web is more than a serious competitor today, ahead of the document information systems, and became the main access point for information retrieval. Libraries are trying to structure an information space that is temporarily or permanently inhabited by users, in which the service offering is developed, but it is still presented as a series of silos, with few opportunities of navigation between them despite considerable engineering efforts and a perspective of evolution towards discovery tools. The profession, having become aware of this deep crisis after accusing eddies caused by the breakdown of the digital switch, looking for ways to adapt and diversify its offering, streamlines the dissemination of information, and reinvents its roles, trying to take advantage of new practices of users, new expectations and new prospects. Libraries put their hope in new data models, trying to add a level of abstraction promoting links with the world of knowledge. The evolution towards the Semantic Web seems to be a valuable opportunity to enhance the collections and make them usable in another context, at the expense of significant efforts sized up by this analysis. A constructivist approach based on participant observation and data collection offers a vision of the outcome within the library community on the development of catalogs and intermediation tools, and an outlook on their issues.

Atributy vyjádření a provedení - realita v souborných katalozích versus informační potřeby uživatelů / Attributes of expression and manifestation - reality in library catalogs vs. information needs of usersTůmová, Markéta January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to explore which attributes of expression and attributes of manifestation are commonly found in bibliographic records and compare them with the information needs of users. The research is focused on the Union catalog of the Czech Republic - CASLIN. In the theoretical part there are presented problems with attributes of expression and attributes of manifestation in model FRBR. In the research part there was performed content analysis of several bibliographic records owing to problems of attributes of expression and attributes of manifestation. In the research section there was made the analysis of information needs of users, too. As qualitative research methods were selected observation of participants and semi-structured interviews with respondents. The result of this thesis should be a comparison between reality in library catalogs and information needs of users.

FRBRizace katalogů a databází - situace v zahraničí / FRBRization of catalogs and databases - the situation abroadLísková, Marie January 2017 (has links)
(in English): The diploma thesis deals with the conceptual model functional requirements for bibliographic records and its implementation or FRBRisation of library information systems abroad. The introduction of the thesis presents in brief the FRBR conceptual model and its family. The second chapter discusses the development of FRBRisation activities since the creation of the FRBR study to the present. The third chapter presents a more detailed description of the FRBRisation process and presents the benefits and challenges of these projects. In connection with this, the impact on cataloging standards and data structures is also mentioned, as well as the currently debated issue concerning the possible ways of presenting the FRBRised data. The last chapter of the diploma thesis contains analysis and comparison of two selected FRBRised systems (BORéAL union catalog and Primo discovery system), with emphasis on the means and scope of FRBR implementation and user interface.

Resource Description Diagram Supplement to “Cataloging Theory in Search of Graph Theory and Other Ivory Towers. Object: Cultural Heritage Resource Description Networks.”Murray, Ronald J., Tillett, Barbara B. 15 August 2011 (has links)
These documents supplement the previously deposited Murray and Tillett working paper: “Cataloging Theory in Search of Graph Theory and Other Ivory Towers. Object: Cultural Heritage Resource Description Networks.” http://hdl.handle.net/10150/136270.
A different version of Fig 8, “FRBR Paper Tool Diagram Elements And Graphs” is included. Documents not referenced in the paper include: “Modeling The Superwork Issue,” which models the concept of a Work composed of other Works two ways; “Progressive Disaggregation,” which demonstrates the recursive process by which simple resource and descriptions composed of other descriptions are resolved to elementary graph structures; and “Serial Publication,” which highlights the pedagogical and IT system guidance role that FRBR resource description diagrams can play with respect to complex publishing phenomena.
A “Find & Navigate” diagram element has been introduced in the serial publication diagram as a theoretical necessity with practical implications. The elements provide a consistent means for depicting the linking functions provided by identifiers, name and subject authority records, and prescribed and arbitrary relationships. The tables and legends found on the right side of the diagram suggest how diagram components may be expressed as “triple” style statements for implementation-minded readers.

Consequentemente, a gestão da dependência tecnológica dos objetos digitais é parte integrante do processo de preservação digital.<br> / Abstract : The continued growth of information volumes in organizations results from the growth of the activities developed by the society in general and of the facilities offered by the constant evolution of information technology. The fast development of new technologies that facilitate the creation of content threatens its preservation and makes it technologically obsolete in a short time. In the context of technological mutability and huge volumes of digital objects, the objectives of this work are the design and the proposal of a framework for long-term digital preservation, aiming the preservation of knowledge. For this purpose, we refer to the fundamentals, techniques and methodologies of knowledge engineering, knowledge management, archival science, library science and computing, such as the appraisal process developed in the archival science and the OAIS reference model. The validation of the framework was realized through semi-structured interviews with specialists in computing, knowledge management and preservation of digital documents. All specialists considered the proposed framework applicable and recognized the impossibility of keeping whole digital content. This confirms the importance of the process of appraisal and selection of objects that will be preserved. Adjustments were introduced in the framework based on the suggestions given by interviewees. The conclusion was that the selection of digital objects for the preservation of knowledge can be safely performed if the appraisal criteria are clearly stated. The preservation of the knowledge encoded in digital objects is possible if the object and the technology that enables your access are aligned. Therefore, the management of digital objects technological dependence is an important component of the digital preservation process.

Resource Description and Access (RDA): continuity in an ever-fluxing information age with reference to tertiary institutions in the Western Capevan Rensburg, Rachel Janse January 2018 (has links)
Magister Library and Information Studies - MLIS / Although Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been discussed extensively amongst the
ranks of cataloguers internationally, no research on the perceptions of South African
cataloguers was available at the time of this research.
The aim of this study was to determine how well RDA was faring during the study's timeframe,
to give a detailed description regarding cataloguer perceptions within a higher education setting
in South Africa. Furthermore, to determine whether the implementation of RDA has overcome
most of the limitations that AACR2 had within a digital environment, to identify advantages
and/or perceived limitations of RDA as well as to assist cataloguers to adopt and implement the
new standard effectively.
The study employed a qualitative research design assisted by a phenomenological philosophy
to gain insight into how cataloguers experienced the implementation and adoption of RDA by
means of two concurrent web-based questionnaires.
The study concluded that higher education cataloguing professionals residing in the Western
Cape were decidedly positive towards the new cataloguing standard. Although there were some
initial reservations, they were overcome to such an extent that ultimately no real limitations
were identified, and that RDA has indeed overcome most of the limitations displayed by
AACR2. Many advantages of RDA were identified, and participants expressed excitement
about the future capabilities of RDA as it continues toward a link-data milieu, making library
metadata more easily available.
