Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records : Viktiga frågeställningar och områden för FRBR

Lundberg, Dan January 2011 (has links)
In this Bachelor's thesis the result from a Delphi study regarding FRBR, performed by Yin Zhang and Athena Salaba in 2007 and published in 2009 – What is next for Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records? A Delphi study – is analyzed by qualitatively interviewing professionals active within the library and information science field in Sweden. The results are compared and possible deviations and adjustments are illuminated and discussed. The purpose of the thesis is to determine the topicality of the Delphi study in 2011 from a Swedish perspective. Conclusions made from the thesis shows that the main areas are still the same, but adjustments regarding the relative order of issues might be needed; primarily a shift of focus from theoretical to practical issues. More specifically, a focus on user aspects, user studies and authority work is needed.

The Status of the Organization of Knowledge in Cultural Heritage Institutions in Arabian Gulf Countries

Aljalahmah, Saleh H 08 1900 (has links)
No published studies to date examined the practices in creation or adoption of metadata in cultural heritage institutions or evaluated metadata in bibliographic databases in the Arabian Gulf counties and assessed its potential interoperability in the aggregation that would provide a central point of access to bibliographic databases of cultural heritage institutions. This exploratory study aimed to address this gap with the goal of: (1) developing understanding of the current state of information representation and knowledge organization in cultural heritage collections in Arabian Gulf countries, and (2) exploring perspectives for future developments such as creating regional large-scale portals similar to Digital Public Library of America, Europeana etc. that facilitate discovery by aggregating metadata and possible barriers to these developments.. The study is focused on a Kuwaiti, Qatari, and Omani libraries, museums, and archives. The mixed-methods research combined semi-structured interviews of the bibliographic database managers at 15 cultural heritage institutions and in-depth content analysis of a sample of 412 metadata records that represent items in these bibliographic databases for accuracy, completeness, consistency, use of knowledge organization systems, etc. This study findings make a research contribution important for evaluating the feasibility and planning of future aggregations of cultural heritage bibliographic databases. Results provided insights into possible ways to achieve interoperability in metadata for such digital portals in the Arabian Gulf region.

Migration et enrichissement sémantique d’entités culturelles / Migration and Semantic Enrichment of Cultural Entities

Decourselle, Joffrey 28 September 2018 (has links)
Cependant, l’agrégation d’informations depuis des sources hétérogènes implique des étapes d’alignement à la fois au niveau du schéma et au niveau des entités / Many efforts have been done these last two decades to facilitate the management and representation of cultural heritage data. However, many systems used in cultural institutions are still based on flat models and are generally isolated which prevents any reuse or validation of information. This Ph.D. aims at proposing new solutions for enhancing the representation and enrichment of cultural entities using the Semantic Web technologies. This work consists in two major steps to reach this objective. On the one hand, the research is focused on the metadata migration process to transform the schema of existing knowledge catalogs to new semantic models. This study is based on a real-world case study using the concepts from the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) which allows to generate graph-based knowledge bases. Yet, the quality of such a migration is the cornerstone for a successful adoption. Thus, several challenges related to the tuning and the evaluation of such a process must be faced. On the other hand, the research aims at taking advantage of these semantic models to facilitate the linkage of information with external and structured sources (e.g., Linked Open Data) and extracting additional information from other sources (e.g., microblogging) to build a new generation of thematic knowledge bases according to the user needs. However, in this case, the aggregation of information from heterogeneous sources requires additional steps to match and merge both correspondences at schema and instance level

In this context, a theoretical model for cataloguing known as Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) was published in 1998. Generally speaking, the cataloguing codes are divided into two parts: one related to description and another to the access points. This work aims to analyse the procedures to choose the access points of personal responsibility of the bibliographic records, in order to relate them to the concepts shown in the FRBR. The present work is characterized as a theoretical search and the investigation resorts to deductive approach to analyse the rules and the internationally accepted principles utilized in the choice of the access points. This search also has an empirical part to collect factual data about the use of cataloguing rules and to compare the registers with or without the use of the FRBR. As a result, it is observed that the cataloguing rules are still directed to the impressed catalogues. However, the concepts presented by the FRBR are related to the automated catalogues. The FRBR enlarge the dimensions of the responsabilities about the content of work and expression, and they translate the social changes to the possibilities of information representation in the bibliographic records. With the FRBR the rules have to be stipulated to facilitate the user activities. This implies in the review of the cataloguing rules, mainly the ones related to the choice of the access point. In this way, the professional of information will pay more efforts to determine which the access points for the user are. Among the uncountable impacts caused by the FRBR, perhaps the most important are to resume the discussion about the cataloguing in theoretical level and to highlight the importance of intellectual work of professional of information. Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records).

Wiesenmüller, Heidrun 24 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Resource Description and Access (RDA): continuity in an ever-fluxing information age with reference to tertiary institutions in the Western Cape

van Rensburg, Rachel Janse January 2018 (has links)
Magister Library and Information Studies - MLIS / Although Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been discussed extensively amongst the ranks of cataloguers internationally, no research on the perceptions of South African cataloguers was available at the time of this research. The aim of this study was to determine how well RDA was faring during the study's timeframe, to give a detailed description regarding cataloguer perceptions within a higher education setting in South Africa. Furthermore, to determine whether the implementation of RDA has overcome most of the limitations that AACR2 had within a digital environment, to identify advantages and/or perceived limitations of RDA as well as to assist cataloguers to adopt and implement the new standard effectively. The study employed a qualitative research design assisted by a phenomenological philosophy to gain insight into how cataloguers experienced the implementation and adoption of RDA by means of two concurrent web-based questionnaires. The study concluded that higher education cataloguing professionals residing in the Western Cape were decidedly positive towards the new cataloguing standard. Although there were some initial reservations, they were overcome to such an extent that ultimately no real limitations were identified, and that RDA has indeed overcome most of the limitations displayed by AACR2. Many advantages of RDA were identified, and participants expressed excitement about the future capabilities of RDA as it continues toward a link-data milieu, making library metadata more easily available.
