Att identifiera uttryck / To identify expression

Nylin Nilsson, Jakob January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyse the possibility to identify the FRBR entity expression from existing catalogue records performed within the context of Swedish cataloguing rules. The empirical study uses a sample of records from the catalogue within the library at the University College of Borås. To begin with, the thesis reports some of the earlier discussion about the FRBR model. That gives an understanding of which problems the model has and justifies the study’s delimitation towards expression. The research questions in the study ask to what extent it is possible to distinguish expression, what fields that identify the entity and if descriptions of particular types of media and publication are different in respect of expression. For an understanding of the empirical material the study uses categories fetched from the article FRBRization: A method for turning online public finding lists into online public catalogs written by Martha M. Yee. The result shows that expression can be identified in a large part of the material. At the same time, the result shows a clear difference between descriptions of monographs and serials, respectively. They are different both in respect of to what extent expression can be distinguished and which fields that identify the entity. One possible interpretation of the result is to understand the concepts in FRBR as roles rather than things. That seems to be able to solve some of the problems that are connected with the model. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Currently, the Semantic Web can only be used in restricted domains, such as e-commerce sites, due to the difficulty of representing the entire Web ontologically. The objective is to see how the concepts, technologies, architectures, and metadata used by the Semantic Web can contribute to build, model and metadata architecture of bibliographic catalogs, based on the concepts defined in the conceptual model developed for the representation of the bibliographic universe called Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), and explain about the use of the conceptual model and ontological resource. The proposal is guided in the study of semantic metadata architectures, in order to identify its characteristics, functions and structures, in addition to study the model BIBFRAME (Bibliographic Framework), which constitutes the most recent initiative on implementing Web technologies to the Library and Information Science field. This research is characterized by its theoretical and exploratory character was developed through analysis and review of literature on their subjects. The results show the main architectures used in the metadata context of the Semantic Web and an approach to ontology, interoperability in information systems, modeling catalogs online, besides the presentation of the model BIBFRAME, based on their importance to the Cataloging / Mestre

Katalogen som tolkningsredskap : Bibliografiska relationer i Resource Description and Access (RDA), med särskild hänsyn till operationaliseringsproblem / The Catalog as Interpretative Tool : Bibliographic Relationships in Resource Description and Access (RDA), with Special Regard to Problems of Operationalization

Wallheim, Henrik January 2013 (has links)
The new cataloging code Resource Description and Access (RDA) provides a system of instructions for recording relationships between related resources by means of a controlled vocabulary of relationship designators. The purpose of this two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies is to examine the construction of this system, as well as its theoretical foundation. One theoretical point of departure is the necessity of operational definitions for consistent identification of bibliographic relationships. Another such point of departure is that the theoretical model on which RDA is based (the FRBR model) is not a complete description of the bibliographic universe, but merely a limited representation of a set of assumptions about that universe. The thesis first examines Barbara B. Tillett's and Richard P. Smiraglia's theories and taxonomies of bibliographic relationships. The analysis shows that, in spite of their claims to provide a theoretical basis for consistent treatment of bibliographic relationships, neither Tillett nor Smiraglia offers operationally applicable definitions. The thesis then turns to RDA in order to examine the instructions and the list of relationship designators. After an introductory survey of RDA chapters 24 to 28, the possibility to record relationship designators at different entity levels is discussed. Remarkably, RDA neither provides instructions for how to choose between the entity levels, nor does it point out what this choice signifies. Finally, a selection of relationship designators representing content relationships is examined. The selected designators are analysed and compared to corresponding categories in literary theorist Gérard Genette's attempt to classify intertextual relationships. The analysis shows that though some of the selected designators are satisfactorily operationalized, most are not.

Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records : Viktiga frågeställningar och områden för FRBR

Lundberg, Dan January 2011 (has links)
In this Bachelor's thesis the result from a Delphi study regarding FRBR, performed by Yin Zhang and Athena Salaba in 2007 and published in 2009 – What is next for Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records? A Delphi study – is analyzed by qualitatively interviewing professionals active within the library and information science field in Sweden. The results are compared and possible deviations and adjustments are illuminated and discussed. The purpose of the thesis is to determine the topicality of the Delphi study in 2011 from a Swedish perspective. Conclusions made from the thesis shows that the main areas are still the same, but adjustments regarding the relative order of issues might be needed; primarily a shift of focus from theoretical to practical issues. More specifically, a focus on user aspects, user studies and authority work is needed.

Zpracování periodik v ČR a v zahraničí, vývoj směrem k RDA pravidlům / Processing of periodicals in the Czech Republic and abroad, a move towards RDA rules

Burkertová, Zuzana January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this work is to evaluate the current procedures and to indicate the development of the cataloging practice towards the RDA rules based on research and analysis of bibliographic production serials in selected Czech and foreign libraries. The diploma thesis is divided into several chapters. After introducing the issue of serial documents follows the chapter devoted to the standards and resources for cataloging the continuing resources that the catalogers should know. The next chapter deals with the FRBR and its application to the serials. Part of the chapter dealing with RDA rules from the serials perspective is also the analysis of these rules according to the FRBR structure available in the RDA Toolkit. Three chapters are devoted to the analysis of bibliographic processing, first in foreign libraries, then in Czech libraries, and in the last chapter there is a comparison of selected periodicals in foreign and Czech libraries. At the end of the thesis are presented the impacts of application of the FRBR model and RDA rules on serials cataloging. Keywords serials - periodicals - continuing resources - rules RDA - FRBR - FRBRoo - PRESSoo - cataloging - bibliographic record - library

Verkbegreppet och bibliografiska relationer. En studie av gränsdragningen mellan olika verk med exempel från Dübensamlingen i Uppsala / The concept of a work and bibliographic relationships. A study of the boundaries of a work with examples from the Düben Collection in Uppsala

Wihlstrand, Agneta January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the concept of a work and the problems with its definition and will also examine bibliographic relationships. The main question is what are the boundaries of a work and at what point a work becomes another. What is the meaning of the concept of a work within the context of the library? What are the solutions of bibliographic relationships and the concept of a work in KRS and FRBR? The thesis is based on a literature review. In the literature I have examined the discussions of the work and bibliographic relationships. I made a comparison between the Swedish cataloguing standard of today, KRS, the suggestion of future cataloguing, FRBR and the catalogue of the Düben Collection. The empirical examples were taken from the Düben Collection, which contains musical works of the Swedish Royal Court from the 17th and early 18th century. The collection has been available since 2006 in a database catalogue on the Internet. I have examined works of six composers, which exist in the catalogue in at least two manifestations. The result of this study shows that the problem with the boundaries of a work is not solved and this is a subjective problem. Cataloguing performed according to the KRS, collocate different versions of a work and its related works, using uniform titles and bibliographic relationships. FRBR offers great opportunities to collocate the different versions of a work, but it is still a suggestion, implemented in just a few web-based resources. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Bibliografering av tryckt skönlitteratur och musikalier : En komparativ studie

Schilliger, Priska January 2010 (has links)
Literature and music as an expression of art have some parts in common, others can quite differ. Both are using a language, and both can exist in written representations. You can find such written or printed items in library catalogues. The aim of this two years master's thesis is to examine how cataloguing of printed fiction-literature and printed music looks like, what differences you can find in cataloguing of printed literature and printed music. This study is based on a comparative methodology and two different theories are used. The first describes the common tasks for library catalogues as they are known traditionally and recently (as FRBR-conceptual model), the other is a comparison of the two art-species literature (fiction) and music. This paper's first part is a comparison of how printed literature and printed music are catalogued in the Swedish national catalogue LIBRIS. This comparison first looked at the Swedish cataloguing rules in KRS (Katalogiseringsregler för svenska bibliotek) and exemplified with a selection of the printed fictional works of one author and the printed music of one composer for comparison. In a second step the FRBR-conceptual model was examined for differences in the basic requirements for national bibliographic records either for printed fiction-literature or for printed music, and how much of these basic requirements are represented in the data of the LIBRIS-catalogue. For both parts it was possible to show, that the differences in cataloguing of printed literature and printed music exist, but only on a more or less detailed level. The tasks for a catalogue are for both literature and music the same: to find a work, to show what a library has and to assist in the choice of a work. But the bibliographic data for printed music materials are much more detailed than those for printed fiction-literature because of differences in the nature of literature and music. I think an implementation of the FRBR conceptual model would improve the information-possibilities of library catalogues. Mostly the fifth FRBR-task to relate would give more valuable information to a catalogue, especially for literary (fiction) and musical products that usually exist in many different expressions.

Från MARC till BIBFRAME : En paradigmdebatt / From MARC to BIBFRAME : A paradigm debate

Bjurmell, Johanna January 2022 (has links)
This thesis explores the debate surrounding BIBFRAME (Bibliographic Framework) in a listserv provided by the Library of Congress (2011-2022). A combined qualitative and quantitative content analysis revealed tensions in the forum between those who prefer MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) and those who prefer BIBFRAME. From a theoretical perspective, these tensions are explained as originating in a conflict between two incommensurable bibliographic paradigms. It is argued that standards like MARC, AACR (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules) and ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description) belong to a ”record-based” paradigm whereas BIBFRAME, FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) and RDA (Resource Description and Access) belong to an ”E-R” paradigm, based around the concepts of entities and relations. The results revealed that the debate is made up of two distinct dimensions: one theoretical technical and one social. The theoretical-technical tensions are, in turn, shown to revolve around two questions: whether MARC is obsolete and whether BIBFRAME is the right way forward. The social tensions stem from a divide between the library community and the IT people. The results provide evidence on the need for clearer communication on BIBFRAME, regarding its goals and design choices. Likewise, there is need for a closer integration between the library community and the IT world.
