IN-SITU PERFORMANCE OF SU-FREI BRIDGE BEARINGS

van Galen, Zachary January 2023 (has links)
Stable Unbonded Fibre Reinforced Elastomeric Isolators (SU-FREI) have been investigated extensively for seismic applications, with over 20 years of literature supporting their use in isolation of structures as an alternative to conventional Steel Reinforced Elastomeric Isolators (SREI). Preliminary investigations have been conducted into their potential use as bridge bearings, where they could provide an alternative to unreinforced and steel reinforced elastomeric bearings. SU-FREI offer a number of potential advantages in this application relative to SREI, including compactness due to thinner reinforcement layers, ease of installation, rotational tolerances, and ease of manufacture. Recently, SU-FREI have been installed under certain highway bridges along the 407 ETR where the previous unreinforced elastomeric bearings had experienced failure. Monitoring has been conducted by Associated Engineering for the 407 ETR Corporation. Data was collected from this monitoring program and field visits have been conducted to observe the condition of the bearings. The original design process used for the SU-FREI bearings has also been reviewed. The monitoring data was compared against design calculations, and the behavior of the SU-FREI analysed to determine whether they meet performance expectations and are suitable for further use as bridge bearings. It was found that some SU-FREI had experienced degradation, including the appearance of an unidentified liquid. The causes of deterioration were investigated and postulated to be primarily related to design limitations imposed by the geometry of the bridges, original design calculation assumptions, and installation issues. Where these factors were not present, the SU-FREI bearings were found to have experienced little to no deterioration. Furthermore, it was determined through comparative design calculations that the FREI outperformed equivalent SREI with regard to rotational capacity. Recommendations have been developed for future deployment of SU-FREI as bridge bearings. Based on the results of initial deployments, larger-scale employment of SU-FREI in this application should be considered. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc) / Concrete and steel bridges deform due to temperature changes, traffic motion, and other factors. To allow these deformations without inducing large forces or damage, bearings are employed between the bridge deck and supports. One type of bearing consists of alternating layers of rubber and steel: steel strengthens the bearing, while the rubber provides lateral and rotational flexibility. A relatively new type of bearing has been developed and tested that replaces the steel layers with carbon fibre. Recently, several of these new SU-FREI bearings have been installed on actual highway bridges. The focus of this thesis is on the performance of SU-FREI installed as bridge bearings. The goal was to observe their performance, identify any unexpected behavior, and create recommendations for future consideration whenever SU-FREI are to be used as bridge bearings. Generally, it was found that their performance is satisfactory provided they are designed and used appropriately.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcelo da Rocha.pdf: 2098584 bytes, checksum: 37e473f23ee6873d2e38553fa34930e0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-11-06 / The work focus on the figure of the first brazilian saint, Frei Galvao, being limited to the central question, which relates to his pills and their powers trying to find out whether the miraculous cures to them attributed are placebo effects or result from the faith the users have in the saint's power. After constructing a historical scenery on the saint's life, his miracles, emphasising the cures through the pills, and the process of canonization, the investigation on the matter begins through the theoretical discussion on faith, its sources, its historical context, the relation to popular religiosity, science, its symbols and cure powers. Following this theoretical premiss, the matter starts to be dealt with directly through the manifestations of a focus group which discusses faith in the present society, the dependence or non dependence between faith and religiosity, the question of skepticism and the abscence of faith and the possible cure relations through faith and the placebo effect. Thus, the matter is directly focused by tying the miraculous figure of Frei Galvao to the Technical data about faith, to the focus group manifestations, to the medical data on the placebo effecct, concluding that the miraculous cure effects attributed to the pills are due to the users faith also including placebo characteristics / O trabalho focaliza a figura do primeiro santo brasileiro, Frei Galvão, limitando-se à questão central, que versa sobre as suas pílulas e seus poderes buscando saber se as curas milagrosas que se lhes atribuem caracterizam-se como um efeito placebo ou resultam da fé dos usuários no poder do santo.

The literary-theoretical influences on the thought of Hans Frei and Paul Ricoeur, with reference to narrative identity

Nanno, Edward January 1997 (has links)
This thesis analyses those differences In interpretation which occur when separate literary-theoretical approaches are applied to biblical texts. Hans Frei suggests that the biblical texts describe the world in a way which he calls "realistic narrative". Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic recognises the disclosive power of the text and translates the subject matter of the text into a "way-of- being-in-the-world". Thus, the primary identity disclosed by the biblical narratives differs. For Frei, it is the identity of Jesus which is disclosed; for Ricoeur, it is "our common human Christian identity". These two thinkers have usually been compared theologically. However, I contend that the theological investigations of both Frei and Ricoeur have been influenced by the literary approaches which guide their theological work. I give an exposition of this relationship in chapter one. In chapter two, I sketch out the implications of this relationship, focusing on the issue of narrative identity. In the final chapter, critiques of both systems are investigated as I attempt to deal with the force of these objections. This dissertation investigates Frei's and Ricoeur's construals of narrative identity (as constructed through the reading of Biblical texts). My working hypothesis is that the construals of identity formulated by Frei and Ricoeur rely upon formalist, narrative "interpretations". My thesis contends that in their respective approaches to the notion of narrative identity, neither thinker has completely abandoned his early literary-theoretical roots in his theological proposals.

This research is divided into three chapters. The first one is a biographical survey about Frei Bettos s academic training, his involvement with social actions, and his relation with the Theology of Liberation. The second chapter is a review of Frei Betto s work, Letters from Prison and Baptism of Blood , highlighting his religious and sociological reading about the Brazilian reality of his time. The third chapter focuses on the differences between a conservative religion and a liberating one, their different ways of addressing social reality, giving emphasis to Frei Betto s concept of liberating religion, as a way of transformation and freedom. Finally, the conclusions call for the historical value of the Theology of Liberation, as a way to appreciate the human being as persons prepared to write their own history and intervene in a social reality of their time. / Esta dissertação pesquisa sobre a história de Frei Betto, sua relação com a Teologia da Libertação e seu pensamento sobre a religião libertadora como contra ponto à religião conservadora. BASE ISOLATION USING STABLE UNBONDED FIBRE REINFORCED ELASTOMERIC ISOLATORS (SU-FREI)

Foster, Andrew Douglas Barry 04 1900 (has links)

Seismic isolation is a seismic design philosophy that aims to reduce the demand on structures as opposed to increasing their capacity to endure forces. Seismic isolation can be achieved by placing isolating bearings with relatively low stiffness compared to the structure itself beneath the superstructure. This low stiffness layer increases the structural period, shifting the structure into a period range of low seismic energy content.

The objectives of this research were to investigate the dynamic properties, durability and limitations of stable unbonded fibre reinforced elastomeric isolator (SU-FREI) bearings. Vertical compression testing indicated the bearings possessed adequate vertical stiffness. Due to lack of bonding at the bearing interface surfaces rollover deformation was observed to occur during lateral cyclic testing. This response behaviour was found to result in advantageous effective lateral stiffness and damping properties. The bearings maintained stability during rollout testing while serviceability and fatigue testing both conformed to code specified test specimen adequacy limitations. Experimental shake table testing showed that the isolated structure behaved essentially as a rigid body during testing. Test results showed that a SU‐FREI isolation system significantly reduced the seismic demand on the structure.

Modelling of the bearings dynamic properties was completed using a bilinear model and a backbone curve model. Both models showed adequate results in predicting experimental peak responses. A simplified design spectrum analysis was presented and used to model the structure in four Canadian cities. This design spectrum analysis approach showed adequate capabilities in predicting peak response values, such that the method could be used in preliminary analysis and design of isolated structures.
/ Master of Applied Science (MASc)
