Literacy for liberation: a Haitian case study

Woodard, Rosemary 12 September 2011 (has links)
This qualitative study of an adult literacy program, Literacy for Liberation, operated by a non-governmental organization and serving a marginalized demographic in Haiti, considered the impact of a literacy program designed to enhance technical and critical literacy skills while promoting communal and individual change. Data, collected in five open-ended interviews and two observations, focused on the contextual, logistical, and beneficial aspects of the program. Results were analyzed using markers from Freire’s framework of critical pedagogy: humanization, situated literacy, dialogue and consciousness-raising, and transformation. Findings revealed limited economic, social, and communal benefits, and that replication of the program may be possible if certain steps are followed. Overall conclusions demonstrated that expanding literacy programs in this setting can facilitate social and economic progress for previously illiterate adults and future generations, particularly where structural inequality is evident. Final recommendations included comparison studies of other programs and longitudinal research of descending generations.

Destarte, descrever percursos, recobrar memórias, investigar processos, é uma forma de impedir governos ditatoriais, é recusar situações sociais de controle, opressão, exclusão e, violação de direitos, é fortalecer a sociedade, a liberdade e a vida / Abstract: This work aims to analyze the exile as a consequence of after the coup in 1964, which deposed João Goulart¿s Governament and estabilished the dictatorship in Brazil. Its characterization is made by description, analysis, and interpretation of the courses of Elza Freire interlaced to the routes of her husband Paulo Freire, Madalena, Cristina, Fátima, Joaquim and Lutgardes, their children. This work is justified by the historical and memorialist character when past facts are interspersed, as well as by the utopia that bonds presente/future in the constructing of more egalitarian and less authoritarian societies. The temporal cut fits the years 1964/1979, the scenery is composed of national and international, in which men, women, adults and children were parto of the exile process. Elza Freire¿s experiences take place in these realities ordered in three phases: Americas, Europe and Africa and, the return to Brazil. The focus is on the exile ¿ considered as an act of violence and power abuse imposed by the State and also as a social event, both collective and individual, that relates the historical, sociocultural, political and pedagogical dimensions. The exile is ambiguous and simultaneous, envolving pain, lack, ruptures and openings of oportunities and horizontes. In its context, there are reconversions of identities, circulation movements and displacements that promote deportations, statelessness, stigmas and diaspora. The arguments¿s basis presentes a theoretical, methodological and empirical triangulation founded on qualitative approach with many intertextualities. Considering many instruments of data collection, the start was the bibliographical survey, all aiming to gather and link the group of documented and nondocumented sources, emphasizing the "Intimate Writings" ("Escritos Íntimos") by Elza Freire. The spectre of the conclusions expands based on this research, markedly for: the elaboration of the Diaspora of Freire; the identification of paradoxes and the leftism of the Freire¿s; the redefinitions of their praxis and proposals, in general in the Education field and particularly the Adult¿s Education; draws changes in the militancy; presents fragments of Elza Freire¿s real life as a woman, an exile, a mother, a wife, a teacher, a friend. Therefore, describing trajectories, recalling memories, investigating processes, is a way of trying to block dictatorial governments, as well as refusing situations of social control, oppression, exclusion and violation of rights; it is a way to strengthen the society, freedom and life / Doutorado / Ciencias Sociais na Educação / Doutora em Educação

Didaktische Anregungen der Befreiungspädagogik Paulo Freires für die Entwicklungsforschung

Novy, Andreas January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Paulo Freire is the most outstanding popular educator in Brazil. He was one of the founders of a mass movement for adult alphabetisation and created and educational approach based on raising the consciousness (conscientizacao). This working paper analyses the contribution of Freires pedagogy of the oppressed for development studies. The following arguments are presented in six sections: (1) Reading the world is a critical undertaking to understand the reality in which one acts. (2) The world has to be critically explored together with social actors which contribute specific knowledge for a joint process of understanding. Exploration as a genuine human activity and research as a scientific undertaking are much more intertwined than generally assumed. (3) Shaping the world as an act of making history and becoming creator of our own surrounding is not only a practical but also a theoretical challenge. (4) Dialogue from below emphasizes the importance of giving voice to those at the margin of world development. This form of dialogue differs from an approach of mere consensus building by the elite. (5) To side with the oppressed is not only an ethical, but also a rational option for the oppressed and against an oppressive system. (6) The praxis of liberation is no extra activity that can be separated from development studies as a scientific discipline which deals with the periphery. Once more, development studies have to become political.(author's abstract) / Series: SRE - Discussion Papers

Vocación ontológica en el primer Freire

Fuentes Caro, Eduardo January 2009 (has links)

Ana Maria Saul. The objective is to analyze the contribution and the influence of Paulo Freire s theory on the Brazilian Public Education System from the nineties until now. In order to achieve the objectives, this work combines a qualitative approach and a case study, incorporating the contributions of an ethnographic work to describe and analyze the ordinary life of a school in the municipality of Diadema-SP, focusing on the developing process of the school curriculum. Besides the observations, which are the natural tools of data collection, this research uses semi-structured interviews and analysis of documents. The data collection, analysis and results are divided into four thematic sections related to Paulo Freire s definitions during his period of management as the Secretary of Education in the Municipality of São Paulo (1989-1991). The themes are: collective construction, respect for the principle of school autonomy, the value of theory-practice unit and the permanent development of educational professionals. During the analysis the three themes were developed. Collective construction presented an improvement relating to the participation and the communication that exists between the various levels and the different players in constructing the curriculum. Autonomy of the school improved its way to develop plans and projects; permanent development of educational professionals allowed for the professors' reflections on their practices. The data showed that the value of the theory-practice unit has many challenges to face. However, the school studied and the municipality of Diadema represent a significant challenge when it comes to defining a public school that combines democracy with quality / Este estudo integra uma pesquisa nacional, sob a responsabilidade da Cátedra Paulo Freire da PUC-SP, sob a coordenação da Dra.
