No. of bitstreams: 1 Roberta Castro Campos Borba.pdf: 874247 bytes, checksum: 09e05e32ba31c3299241dd914b666925 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-12-12 / The present study analyzed the verbal responses of two people with a psychiatric diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Participants were one female aged 18, and one male, 35 years of age. For analysis of antecedent and consequent events that controlled the verbal responses indicative of mood swings, was applied the strategies of indirect functional assessment, and direct and experimental, with the use of multiple conditions with four main conditions: attention condition, demand, alone, and control. The attention condition was subdivided into three sub conditions: medicine-condition, family- attention and cellular care-attention for P1; and exclamation attention, sign attention of approval and doubt attention for P2. An intervention program was accomplished through the design of alternate treatments of type ABCA followed by follow-up. The first purpose was to use functional assessment methodology to verify the controlling variables that produced and maintained the verbal responses of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Other was to reduce problem behaviors, while new desired behaviors were installed. The results suggest that social attention controlled about the verbal responses from both participants, whose frequencies decreased throughout the treatment program. These findings were discussed in terms of the importance of using functional assessment process for classes of problem behaviors in people with diagnoses of bipolar disorder.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Guliver Reboucas Nogueira.pdf: 700204 bytes, checksum: 744d59ba2ac76a499c54f23d61b9d723 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-19 / The current study involved evaluation and treatment of the antecedent and consequent events which were keeping inappropriate speeches (FI) of a person with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. The participant was a male, single, 30 years old. Strategies of the functional evaluation process through indirect observation, direct observation and functional analysis (experimental) were used. The functional analyses involved the manipulation of environmental events in for main conditions: attention, demand escaping, alone and control. The condition attention was subdivided into: (1.1) attention-reprimand, (1.2) attention-inquiry and (1.3) attention-reverse. The results have showed that there was a higher record of FI in the conditions of attention and demand escaping, than in the other conditions: alone and control. It became clear, therefore, that the FI were kept through positive and negative reinforcement sources. For the conduction of intervention, the outline of alternate treatments of the type ABC was used, proceeded by follow-up. For the treatment itself, on phase B, it was applied differential reinforcement of the type alternative differential reinforcement (DRA) of speeches topographically different from the FI combined with its extinction (EXT), procedure that has made possible to reduce the FI and increase the appropriate speeches (FA). On phase C the stimuli analysis (AE) was taught which comprehended in the participant to evaluate the current events in his immediate environment with his physical descriptions. In the follow-up phase, the results point to the maintaining of the issuance of FA in higher frequency than in respect to the FI. The objectives of this study were achieved. Studies such as this one, among others available in literature, show that with behavior analysis tools is possible to increase the frequency of appropriate behaviors in people who have the psychiatric diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Gouveia, Jordana Silva de Mello 15 March 2010 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jordana Silva de Mello Gouveia.pdf: 2533645 bytes, checksum: 048285dace2342529b28edbd00fec857 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-15 / The present study aimed at investigating the problem behavior of an autistic child in a specialized service using the principles of behavior analysis. The participant was a 10- year-old male child. All the sessions were video-recorded and the behavior class of physical aggression to the mother was selected for intervention. For the functional analysis of the conditions that probably controlled or maintained the behavior of physical aggression to the mother, we used the design of multiple conditions with three main conditions and six sub-conditions: 1) condition of attention, manipulated in four subconditions - (1.1) attention, order; (1.2) attention, physical contact; (1.3) attention, reprimand; (1.4) attention, game; 2) condition alone, manipulated in two sub-conditions - (2.1) alone; (2.2) alone with reinforcers; 3) condition of demand. The results demonstrated that in all conditions of attention the occurrences of physical aggression were high, the same occurring in the condition of demand. In both sub-conditions alone, the frequency of behavior of physical aggression to the mother was zero. Since our data pointed to the control of social attention as a controller of the participant s problem behavior, we decided to adopt a program of treatment employing the ABA reversal design and a follow-up. The design was initiated by data collection of Baseline I (A), followed by the phase of Intervention (B), and another phase of Baseline II (A). During the sessions of intervention, we used a program of treatment employing differential reinforcement of alternative answers (DRA), offering social reinforcement for desired behaviors and withdrawing social attention for the behavior of physical aggression to the mother in an extinction procedure (EXT). Our results demonstrated that withdrawing social attention for the behavior of physical aggression decreased these occurrences and offering social reinforcement for desired behaviors increased their frequency. These results showed that the program of treatment and not other variables was responsible for the changes in the problem behavior of the participant.

The Dirac equation with a superposition of the Aharonov-Bohm field and a uniform magnetic collinear field

Smirnov, Andrei Anatolyevich 16 August 2004 (has links)
ln the present work the Dirac equation with the supereposition of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) field and a collinear uniform magnetic field, which we call a magnetic-solenoid (MS) field, is studied. Using von Neumann\'s theory of the self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators, in 2 + 1 dimensions we construct a one-parameter family of self-adjoint Dirac Hamiltonians specified by boundary conditions at the AB solenoid and find the spectrurn and eigenfunctions for each value of the extension parameter. We reduce the (3 + 1)-dimensional. problem to the (2 + 1)-dimensional one by a proper choice of the spin operator, which allows realizing all the programme of constructing self-adjoint extensions and finding spectra and eigenfunctions in the previous tenns. We also present the reduced self-adjoint extension method for the radial Dirac Hamiltonian with the MS field. We then turn to the regularized case of finite-radius solenoid. We study the structure of the corresponding eigenfunctions and their dependence on the behavior of the magnetic field inside the solenoid. Considering the zero-radius limit with the fixed value of the magnetic flux, we obtain a concrete self-adjoint Hamiltonian corresponding to a specific boundary condition for the case of the magnetic-solenoid field \'W-ith the AB solenoid. These particular cases of self-adjoint extensions we call natural extensions. For completeness we also study the behavior of the spinless particle in the regularized magnetic-solenoid field. Successive step of our investigation is a construction of the Green functions of the Dirac equation with the MS field in 2 + 1 and 3 + 1 dimensions. The Green functions are constructed by means of summation over the complete set of solutions of the Dirac equation. Constructing the Green functions, we use the exact solutions of the Dirac equation that are related to the specific values of the extension parameter. These values correspond to the natural extension. Then we extend the results to the (3 + 1)-dimensional case. For the sake of completeness, we present nonrelativistic Green functions and Green functions of the relativistic scalar particle.

Functional data analysis in orthogonal designs with applications to gait patterns

Zhang, Bairu January 2018 (has links)
This thesis presents a contribution to the active research area of functional data analysis (FDA) and is concerned with the analysis of data from complex experimental designs in which the responses are curves. High resolution, closely correlated data sets are encountered in many research fields, but current statistical methodologies often analyse simplistic summary measures and therefore limit the completeness and accuracy of conclusions drawn. Specifically the nature of the curves and experimental design are not taken into account. Mathematically, such curves can be modelled either as sample paths of a stochastic process or as random elements in a Hilbert space. Despite this more complex type of response, the structure of experiments which yield functional data is often the same as in classical experimentation. Thus, classical experimental design principles and results can be adapted to the FDA setting. More specifically, we are interested in the functional analysis of variance (ANOVA) of experiments which use orthogonal designs. Most of the existing functional ANOVA approaches consider only completely randomised designs. However, we are interested in more complex experimental arrangements such as, for example, split-plot and row-column designs. Similar to univariate responses, such complex designs imply that the response curves for different observational units are correlated. We use the design to derive a functional mixed-effects model and adapt the classical projection approach in order to derive the functional ANOVA. As a main result, we derive new functional F tests for hypotheses about treatment effects in the appropriate strata of the design. The approximate null distribution of these tests is derived by applying the Karhunen- Lo`eve expansion to the covariance functions in the relevant strata. These results extend existing work on functional F tests for completely randomised designs. The methodology developed in the thesis has wide applicability. In particular, we consider novel applications of functional F tests to gait analysis. Results are presented for two empirical studies. In the first study, gait data of patients with cerebral palsy were collected during barefoot walking and walking with ankle-foot orthoses. The effects of ankle-foot orthoses are assessed by functional F tests and compared with pointwise F tests and the traditional univariate repeated-measurements ANOVA. The second study is a designed experiment in which a split-plot design was used to collect gait data from healthy subjects. This is commonly done in gait research in order to better understand, for example, the effects of orthoses while avoiding confounded analysis from the high variability observed in abnormal gait. Moreover, from a technical point of view the study may be regarded as a real-world alternative to simulation studies. By using healthy individuals it is possible to collect data which are in better agreement with the underlying model assumptions. The penultimate chapter of the thesis presents a qualitative study with clinical experts to investigate the utility of gait analysis for the management of cerebral palsy. We explore potential pathways by which the statistical analyses in the thesis might influence patient outcomes. The thesis has six chapters. After describing motivation and introduction in Chapter 1, mathematical representations of functional data are presented in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 considers orthogonal designs in the context of functional data analysis. New functional F tests for complex designs are derived in Chapter 4 and applied in two gait studies. Chapter 5 is devoted to a qualitative study. The thesis concludes with a discussion which details the extent to which the research question has been addressed, the limitations of the work and the degree to which it has been answered.

THE EFFECTS OF TEACHER IMPLEMENTATION OF DIFFERENTIAL REINFORCEMENT OF ALTERNATIVE BEHAVIOR IN INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Hitch, Elena J. 01 January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a classroom teacher implementing trail-based functional analyses (FAs), experimentally evaluate the effects of a classroom teacher implementing differential reinforcement of alternative (DRA) procedures with participants diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in the context of a natural setting, and assess the feasibility of the DRA for the classroom teacher. A multiple baseline with an embedded ABAB design was used for one participant and an ABAB design was used for the second participant to measure the percentage of the participants’ engagement in the alternative behavior and the target behavior. Results showed that the classroom teacher could implement the trail-based FAs with fidelity, DRA procedures were effective for both participants, and the teacher was neutral in regard to the feasibility of the procedures.
