Fleet Dynamics around a Seasonal Regulatory Closure on the Scotian Shelf.van der Lee, Adam 19 September 2012 (has links)
I investigate aspects of fleet dynamics in a mobile gear, groundfish fishery, on the Scotian Shelf; an area subject to a seasonal area closure. Firstly, the direct impacts of the closure on the redistribution of fishing effort and the resultant catch rates of those “fishing the line” (FTL) were examined. Effort was found to concentrate within 30km of the closure boundary. Two areas of potential FTL strategy were identified, which produced variable catch rate trends. East of the closure, areas of highest catch rate corresponded to areas of greatest effort, while to the west, catch rate was often equalized throughout the region, analogous to the ideal free distribution (IFD). Secondly, two effort distributional models were compared: an IFD-based isodar model and a discrete choice model. The isodar was determined to be the preferred model because of both its consistently superior predictive performance and its greater simplicity.

This paper examines the relationship between the adoption of GHG emission inventories and
the operational and financial performance of companies. It is based on the presuppositions of
the theory of legitimacy that, when business organizations take action and signal engagement
for the environment, they gain the preference of consumers and investors, who, for example,
will give priority to the acquisition of their Products: this may impact on their operational and
financial performance. In order to reach the objective of this study, the performance of two
business groups was compared: the group that compiles the inventory of GHG emissions by
contractual obligation, since they are companies participating in the Brazilian GHG Protocol
program, and another group of companies formed by IBrX- 100 of BM & FBovespa. In order
to measure the operational and financial performance, the model F_Score de Piotroski (2000)
was used. This model is composed of three indicators: profitability (I_RENT); Capital structure
and liquidity (I_ECL); And operational efficiency (I_EFO). Thus, this study is based on the
assumption that financial performance is measured by I_RENT and I_ECL; And operational
performance, by I_EFO. Regarding the data analysis, initially the Hausman and Lagrange tests
were used, which pointed the panel analysis in the random effects model the most indicated.
The results of the panel analysis showed that it is not possible to establish a relationship between
the adoption of the GHG emissions inventories and the operational and financial performance,
the hypothesis of the study is rejected. Given this result, it is suggested that future researches
use other proxies for the measurement of operational and financial performance. In addition, it
is proposed to transform the information contained in the GHG emissions inventories into an
environmental performance proxy.

Previous issue date: 2015-11-12 / There is a great concern about environmental issues, in particular as regards the possibility of occurring changes in climate in the coming years. The scenarios designed of change are directly linked to the continuity of greenhouse gases emission. The modern coffee-growing requires the rational and sustainable use of natural resources and agricultural inputs, being essential to adopt environmentally friendly practices in the realization of cultural practices and conduct of the entire production process. The objective of this study is to inventory the sources and estimating emissions of greenhouse gases in the coffee production process, considering the direct and indirect emissions of the process. The inventory was performed using parameters of the GHG Protocol, Ministry of Science and Technology and the IPCC data. The inventory showed that the main greenhouse gas generated in the coffee corresponded to 2.13 tCO2eq h-1, and the consumption of nitrogen fertilizer (47.5%) and the use of agricultural rectification (30.8%) were the sources of greater contribution for these emissions, followed by the consumption of diesel oil. To carry out the planting operations, annual cultivation and harvest in mechanized coffee culture were issued 465.26 kg CO2 eq ha -1, and the planting were issued 242.58 kg CO2 eq ha -1, accounting for 52.14% of total emissions. The operations carried out in mechanized harvesting, issued 124.3 kg CO2 eq ha-1 contributing 26.72% of total emissions and representing 55.82% of the total issued in operations carried out in the annual cultivation.

Modelování četností pojistných událostí / Claims count modeling in insuranceŠkoda, Štěpán January 2013 (has links)
1 Abstract: The present work investigates techniques of insurence ratemaking accor- ding to the claims counts of policyholders on the basis of information contained in policies. At the beginning, we provide a closer examination of the theory of genera- lized linear models, which have wide range of applications in the field of actuarial modeling. The second chapter presents the basic Poisson regression model as well as some particular verification methods. Specifically, deviance and Wald test could be found here and furthermore also important results for residuals. The third chapter contains information on alternative approaches to modeling the claim frequencies and at the end the GEE method, that can be applied in case of panel data, is de- scribed. The numerical study based on real insurace data in last part of this diploma thesis illustrate's previously described techniques which were obtained with the help of statistical software SAS.

Traditional Korean Music in Contemporary Context: A Performance Guide to Gideon Gee Bum Kim's KangkangsullaeLee, Hyejin 05 1900 (has links)
Gideon Gee Bum Kim is an internationally-acclaimed contemporary Korean-Canadian composer. Kim has utilized traditional Korean music with Western composition techniques in some of his works. Kim created his own style by incorporating traditional Korean musical elements such as the scale, rhythmic diversity, syncopation, variation, ornamentation, and the progression of melody into a body of music that is otherwise contemporary and Western. The purpose of this study is to develop a performance guide for Gideon Gee Bum Kim's Kangkangsullae for string trio. Kangkangsullae trio is based on Korean historical, cultural and musical influences. I give a detailed historical and cultural background for this work and demonstrate how Kim integrated Western compositional techniques with traditional Korean music. My emphasis is on defining specific characteristics of traditional Korean music which will provide several points toward understanding Kim's compositional style.

[en] DECARBONIZING THE SUPPLY CHAIN IN THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR IN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS / [pt] DESCARBONIZAÇÃO DA CADEIA DE SUPRIMENTOS NO SETOR DE ÓLEO E GÁS EM PROJETOS DE INFRAESTRUTURALUCIANA SALVATORE 20 April 2021 (has links)
[en] Sustainable development and carbon dioxide emissions have been widely debated in the oil and gas sector, which is developing plans to reduce the emission of this gas in its operations. Movements in this direction are influenced by the commitments made in the Paris Agreement limiting the increase in global temperature by up to 2 degrees Celsius by reducing the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). Also, recent manifestations of investment funds demanding organizations to take actions to protect the environment, mean a call to prepare Brazilian companies to outline GHG emissions throughout their value chain. The objective of this work is to contribute to the inclusion of initiatives to reduce GHG emissions in bidding processes for capital investment projects. The study focuses on logistics infrastructure and support for industrial areas projects, specifically in the execution of construction and assembly services to give materiality to the environmental sustainability initiatives in management and implementation of projects. Using a case study, the documentation related to four contract opportunities for the construction and assembly of infrastructure and offsite areas available in the Brazilian market was evaluated in the light of criteria raised in the literature to identify initiatives to reduce emissions of GHG during the construction phase. Interviews with experienced professionals in the management and implementation of projects of this type, direct observation of the preparation of the documentation for procurement process for two projects in the design phase, and review of archival documents and corporate data comprised the study. This analysis allowed us to understand that some initiatives are already found in the form of contractual requirements with a view to energy efficiency, minimizing costs, and maximizing productivity associated with the use of GHG-emitting equipment and machines and can be developed in the scenario of the studied organization, recommending to this end, a guide for incorporating environmental sustainability initiatives with a focus on reducing GHG emissions into the processes for procuring construction services and assembling of logistics infrastructure and offsite projects.

Previous issue date: 2015-05-07 / Universidade Católica de Santos - Católica de Santos / This work brings an approach regarding the environmental impacts caused by the Port of Santos' activities, specifically those related to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), a the socio-environmental vulnerability of the cities in this coastal zone as a result of climate change. The study includes some instruments that make up the reference framework of the International Environmental Law (IEL), including the Agenda 21 and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as some internal planning documents: the Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions, prepared by CETESB (Companhia de Tecnologia de Saneamento Ambiental - Environmental Sanitation Technology Company), and the Environmental Agenda local Port. The research presents initiatives and best practices of two international ports - Shanghai and Los Angeles - that consolidated a partnership for mitigation and adaptation of anthropogenic GHG emissions. Considering the contributions of these tools, this study provides opportunities for the development of local and regional public policies that lead to the reduction of air emissions and greenhouse gases.
