Previous issue date: 2006-05-04 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This paper is about a certain group of women; teachers working with children in their early years in São José County. The women mentioned in this paper are pedagogy students at Vale do Itajaí University, and they are also mothers, wives, girlfriends, and daughters; women who play different roles in their everyday lives and whose usual procedures have become the target of this research. The object of this paper is to understand how their everyday roles and chores interfere on their way of teaching as well as on their way of solving family conflicts, especially regarding those situations where public and private scenarios are not well defined. It also regards male/female situations being build on regular basis; using gender as an analytical filter according to recent theories and methodologies. Analyzing their speech one can see how they try to break already established situations by adopting simple usual tactics and procedures. By doing so, these teachers have been transforming their university into a place for freedom. / Este trabalho consiste num estudo acerca de um grupo de mulheres. Mulheres professoras que atuam na educação infantil e nas séries iniciais do ensino fundamental no município de São José. As mulheres pesquisadas são acadêmicas do curso de Pedagogia, da Universidade do Vale do Itajaí, Campus São José, são também mães, esposas, namoradas, amantes, filhas, mulheres que vivenciam diferentes papéis e foram suas práticas cotidianas que nortearam as investigações dessa pesquisa. Objetiva compreender como estas mulheres percebem e lidam com as interferências decorrentes das tramas de suas relações cotidianas, quais as possíveis implicações dessas interferências na constituição da professora, bem como as estratégias utilizadas por elas para resolver situações de conflito familiares, especialmente ao transitarem simultaneamente nos espaços público e privado. Percebe as masculinidades e feminilidades sendo construídas nas relações de cotidianeidade, sendo utilizado o gênero como categoria de análise, observando as contribuições teóricas e metodológicas recentes. A análise das narrativas das professoras mostra que elas se apropriam de práticas cotidianas, com táticas e estratégias, na tentativa de quebrar com representações sociais cristalizadas, ao que foi possível compreender que o grupo de mulheres professoras, sujeitos desta pesquisa, transformam a universidade em espaço de liberdade.

Gender issues in the landscape, for a long time, have belonged to the fields of social and political science, which remain relatively unfamiliar to both practitioners and students in the discipline of landscape architecture. Previous scholars have put effort into examining questions of gender, culture and landscape in order to clarify the issues that researchers may encounter in today’s field of study. Among these gender classifications, questions in feminist inquiry have provided a historical setting to this study: what are the forms, transitions and design approaches that women employ as creators of the built landscapes?
Through reviewing the past literature and surveying today’s practitioners, an understanding emerges of how female landscape designers think about their gender identity as a variable in the design process. In addition, several issues are further identified, including the female awareness of their gender identity in the workplace, types of female work, transitions in design approach since the 1899 American Society of Landscape Architects was founded to the present day, cultural discourse in female landscape forms, and so on.
The major goal of this study is not to build a description of history that asks how women may design differently than men, but to reexamine the idea that has made such stereotypes invalid; gender may influence design approaches but not outcome. Furthermore, this study also attempts to identify the potential gender issues in today’s profession, and to provide a viewpoint to landscape designers of any gender: How does our innate gender identity potentially influence design thinking? Finally, as a designer who is drawn to the cultural dimension of landscape architecture, I hope this study will be helpful to landscape professionals in developing a more complex approach and critical eye for looking at designed landscape forms as cultural vehicles for gender construction.

Gender issues in management promotions in the health services: a Malawian perspectiveChirwa, Maureen Leah 28 February 2002 (has links)
This study sought to explore gender issues affecting management promotions in Malawi's
health care services, utilising both qualitative and quantitative techniques in data collection
and analysis. Promotion patterns were compared and contrasted for male and female
managers.
The study was based on the assumptions that
• both men and women were aware of experiences that affected their promotion
opportunities
• promotion patterns showed fewer variations than did cultural, social and gender
factors
• male prejudices were maintained which oppressed women's promotions
• increased decision-making power lowered stress about professional growth and
development
The findings supported the first two assumptions, but not the last two. The findings
suggested that males and females encountered similar experiences concerning managerial
promotions in Malawi's health care services. Factors that enhanced management successes for both males and females included
management orientation and mentorship. Unclear promotion policies and procedures
hindered management promotions. Information derived from this research could enable
policy-makers to establish an environment that increases supportive networks and
interactions between male and female managers in Malawi. Furthermore, to ensure equal
opportunities in the health care services management, monitoring strategies by Malawi's
Ministry of Gender, the Department of Human Resources Management and Development,

Some issues affecting participation of the poor in development projects in Inkosikazi communal lands in ZimbabweKhanye, Bhekimpilo 30 June 2005 (has links)
This study investigates some of the issues affecting participation of the poor in two development projects in Inkosikazi communal lands in Zimbabwe. Recent trends in participatory development are reviewed and discussed in the study. Some definitions of the concept of participation are explored, including its historical background, importance and challenges.
Fieldwork was undertaken in Inkosikazi communal lands in July 2004. Two projects were randomly sampled, and in one of them involving goat-rearing, some of the participants were classified as being very poor, while in the other, a heifer loan-scheme project, none of the participants could be classified as very poor. The possible reasons for these variations are explored in the study.
The conclusion of the thesis is that the study succeeds in examining certain key issues affecting participation of the poor in Inkosikazi communal lands in Zimbabwe and recommendations thereof are made. / Development Studies / M.A. (Development Studies)

Postcolonial biblical interpretation in the context of the Democratic Republic of the Congo : selected texts from Joshua 1-12Bwalya, Laishi 11 1900 (has links)
The present research has been aimed at investigating how imperialism and colonialism are located both in the biblical text (cf. Joshua 1-12) and in present day interpretive postcolonial contexts such as that of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
An investigation was made of the unequal power dynamics at play between the Israelites who are depicted as mercilessly conquering the indigenous peoples of Canaan in the name of the deity, and the Canaanites. How were/ are such power dynamics played out in the Katangese, Democratic Republic of the Congo’s context in the relations between the then colonizers, that is, the Belgians as well as the neo-colonial African rulers and the Congolese peoples? It is argued that the Belgians assumed the role akin to that of the Israelite invaders as they mercilessly invaded the “promised land”, that is, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, ending with the brutal extermination of African peoples justified on biblical precedents.
A conclusion is made that within the context of postcolonial biblical interpretation, the conquest narrative of Joshua 1-12 is one of the most traumatic stories in which violence is committed by one nation on another in the name of the deity. Postcolonial biblical criticism was found to be an appropriate approach in assisting the researcher to navigate through violent biblical texts with a view to coming up with a transformative reading of the texts in the (Katangese) context of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D. The impact of religious and cultural discourses on the leadership development of women in the ministry : a vhusadzi (womanhood) perspectiveMudimeli, Lufuluvhi Maria 10 1900 (has links)
Culture and religion have both healthy and unhealthy effect on the leadership development of women in Africa. In this regard, the impact of especially African Pentecostal Christian discourses, as well as Vhavenda cultural discourses, on the lives of women leaders are brought to the surface through literary reviews, questionnaires and interviews. Accordingly, the data obtained by means of these methods are analysed using existing theological and cultural hermeneutics methods. Furthermore, they are deconstructed in terms of a vhusadzi (womanhood) perspective of empowerment regarding women in the ministry, which is applicable in an African-South African context. The present role of women in Pentecostal churches in the Venda context is studied historically and critically with reference to a future of empowerment. It is found that the leadership role of women in the ministry in Pentecostal churches in Venda is faced by certain challenges, which include rereading the Bible from the perspective of women in partnership with men, validating women’s ordination in dialogue with patriarchal interpretations of presumed biblical prohibitions on women’s ordination, rescoping cultural influences on church leadership roles, which are supported by Venda proverbs and rituals and reframing perceptions of women in the ministry amongst church leaders and the laity. The unique contribution of this thesis is, firstly, its focus on Pentecostal women in Venda. Secondly, a vhusadzi perspective is formulated that has never been done before in the literature. This perspective encompasses the experiences and expectations of Vhavenda women living in the Limpopo Province in South Africa. Thirdly, a link is drawn between culture, religion and ministerial leadership with a gender focus that produces new knowledge of the relationship between religion and culture as it manifests itself in a Venda context. The vhusadzi approach is informed by the bosadi approach of the Old Testament scholar, Madipoane Masenya, and feeds on her insights into women’s access to the interpretation of biblical texts. The vhusadzi approach takes these insights further by applying them to Vhavenda women’s access to leadership roles in the church. It opens up the future for further research, inviting African women scholars to contextualise issues related to women’s ordination. / Systematic Theology and Theological Ethics / D. Th.
