The role of artists in the public realm : an investigation into artists' generative processes in context

Silver, Susannah January 1999 (has links)
A shift in practice towards a process-orientated and collaborative art practice within the strands of art practice in the public realm raises the question, ’what is the practical contribution artists make to society?’ which can only be answered by first understanding how artists work. Introducing the concepts of ‘context’, ‘artist-led’ and ‘residency’ with reference to the Artists Placement Group, the problematics of assessing the social contribution of context-specific art practices are presented as resting upon two difficulties, the conceptual gulf between the artworld and the public realm and the assumption that artists can or should not articulate their intentions for an artwork. Combining questions raised from practice with the problems outlined by Suzanne Lacy, the need for research into the generative process of public artists is established. The purpose of the research is to investigate and develop artists’ understanding of the generative process by examining the interaction of artists in contexts in the public realm and to make that information explicit. An appropriate methodology and theoretical framework is found by critically reviewing recent related practice-based research projects in Art and Design with special attention to the work of Ian Hunter on immersion strategies in rural contexts. The model of the artistic process as problem-solving, developed by J. Getzels and M. Csikszentmihalyi , is also examined against current theories in scientific research into creativity and theories of social policy problem-setting of Donald Schon and the pattern of inquiry by John Dewey and subsequently extended. Data was generated by recording the decisions and reflections of three artists carrying out an actual artist-led context-specific project in the public realm (‘Taming Goliath’). Data gathered by using a specially adapted method (‘Sweatbox’) were analysed by using the Generative Process Model. The results produced narratives which describe each artist’s experience and information on the methods artists use to interact with a context in the public realm, their intentions. The significance of the findings and the experience are discussed in relation to the work of Suzanne Lacy and Allan Kaprow with recommendations for further research. In conclusion, four areas contributing to knowledge are proposed: the extension of the Generative Process Model, the development of an methodology of analysis, the usage of the Sweatbox method and contributions to the body of knowledge of artists’ processes in the public realm.

That is the story of the Abraham's proof, in which God asks him to take his son Isaac get into the land of Moriah and offer him there for a burnt offering. It is a very polemic narrative because it seems to contradict God's nature. For the analysis we follow the theory purposed by Greimas in his science of signification that aims the generative process of meaning in order to find the text's code and understand its deep structure. We also follow the semiotic analysis of biblical narratives made by the GROUPE D'ENTREVERNES. The analysis has two main parts: the description of the surface structures and their narrative and discursive components, and the description of the deep structures, which aims the semiotic squares articulation. In the study of the narrative component we built the narrative model by the narrative programs organization. We found that Abraham is subject that quests to demonstrate his obedience to God, the addresser-manipulator, by giving his son Isaac as a burnt offering. Then, we developed the narrative scheme, based on the operations of manipulation, competence, performance and sanction; the study of actants; and the modal syntax. The discursive component is based on the study of the actors, the time and the space; the figurative processes that in this text are: the moving, the holocaust and the family; and the analysis of the veridictory modalities. The narrative programs and the figurative processes allowed us to find the isotopies of the text that carry to the deep structures by the semiotic squares articulation. In the Abraham's proof narrative we conclude that... (Complete abstract, click electronic access below) / Doutor

Teribele, Alessandra January 2011 (has links)
Reforestation wood, in its natural and round shape, emerges as an effective material for use in buildings, due to its physical and mechanical features and functional versatility. However, its cylindrical geometry and unequal sections difficult connections between the round elements, demanding angle cuts and rough-hewing of the pieces. Arrangements or combinations among pieces involve specific types of joints or connections, relating the type of union to the position that the pieces have in the threedimensional space. Since there is no structured knowledge that allows anticipating the appropriate connections for each arrangement or combination of pieces, the possibility of linking the choice of connections to the architectural composition, through generic connections, is suggested. This paper uses the shape grammars paradigm in order to create compositional alternatives to the types of joints, through generation rules. These data provide parameters to define two connective principles: top to top, and top to middle of the piece (cross section). From these principles, it is possible to model alternatives of articulations and to compare different options. The link between the principles of articulation and types of joints enabled the formulation of models of linkage pieces, which minimize the need for angle cuts in the round pieces. These generic connections can adapt to the angle of the round log, allowing it to be cut without loss of material.

Understanding the Generative Process in Traditional Urbanism: An Application Using Pattern and Form Languages

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Scholars have called for better understanding of the generative process, a process underlying the creation of urban form that often has positive qualities such as coherence, human scale, flexibility, and adaptability. The generative process is incremental and continually refined, producing urban settlements that respond to feedback. Redefining the pattern language as a system of knowledge generation, and a method to acquire essential information and re-create historical contexts, this dissertation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the generative process and the corresponding urban codes of traditional cities. The dissertation consists of three complete yet interconnecting articles. The first article examines the structural components of the generative process— place-based norms and urban codes—and their roles in generative development. Two traditions of urbanism with distinctive and coherent forms and different levels of imposed regulations were investigated: medieval European and Arabic-Islamic. The study finds that place-based norms are the core of any generative process. Whenever written codes do not control urban space, these norms emerge to operationalize the building process. The second article investigates the generative process through the operationality of patterns, properties, and a sequence in the creation of the traditional form of the town of Hoian, Vietnam. The recurrence of each property and the pattern of its repetition in urban elements are investigated to assess the impact of generative forces on the urban form of Hoian. Fifteen of Alexander’s properties and ten of Lynch’s qualities were also combined into a set of twenty properties of urban elements. Finally, the third article observes and then explores the unfolding of the generative process using the virtual online platform OpenSim, thereby verifying the operationality of the generative process revealed in the previous two articles. The paper substantiates the proposition that the generative system includes patterns and urban properties that can serve as rules for directing urban growth. These rules build diverse and unified urban settlements. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Geography 2015

From intention to architectural solution : The proposal of a support method to integrate daylight during the early design steps

Gallas, Mohamed-Anis 06 September 2013 (has links)
The daylight illuminates the architectural space and creates the necessary conditions to accommodate human activities. The illuminating function of daylight is joined to another sensitive dimension that attributes a distinctive identity to the designed space. The control of daylight in architectural environment needs some detailed and precise characteristics about aperture and walls features. The multiplicity of these characteristics is faced with the inaccuracy and the uncertainty of the design information available during the early steps. Our research aims to propose a design support method that takes into account the early design step features and helps designers to integrate there daylight atmosphere intentions in project. We propose a design support method structured as a declarative modelling process. The declarative process helps the designer to declare his daylight intentions and to translate them to potential solutions that could be integrated in his project. This method considers the designer intentions as the main design information used to help designer during the early design steps. The proposed method provides functionalities that could operate the inaccuracy and the uncertainty of the ideas research and formalisation steps. Our design support method was implemented in a prototype design support tool. The cognitive contribution and the ability to support the design activities of the proposed tool was evaluated and analysed in an experimental design context

O suplício na espera dilatada: a construção do gênero suspense no cinema / Torment in an enlarged expectation: the construction of the suspense genre in the movies.

Silva, Odair José Moreira da 07 April 2011 (has links)
Studies about movie genres point out to several directions, without specifying, however, the importance that should be given to discursive strategies that engender the significance of a particular movie. For a long time, French semiotic theory was suitable only to highlight a profile of filmic significance, which originated from the generative process in meaning, once it deals specifically with narrative scheme. However, French semiotic studies about movies are scarce. Due to the cinematographic diversity, a cut can be made of the specific totality. From that, genres refer to a certain identity of filmmaking. Genres, considered as enunciates that hold a thematic content, style and compositional construction, found the filmic identity. Nevertheless, this Bakhtinian architectural norm, inherent in many filmic enunciates seems to be little mentioned. Therefore, ignoring this basic principle means to establish a distance from a comprehension of the signification process that once noticed and analyzed brings light to the way the movie enunciator uses some resources that reveal a particular way of manipulating the spectators, the ideal enunciatee. The present work aims to expose how a particular movie genre, the suspense, originated in a historical period of the seventh art, known as classic movie era, can be unveiled, taking as basis the refered Bakhtinian norm. With this principle in mind this research penetrates the significance theory and brings to life many possibilities of examining filmic text. Following such orientation, this paper presents some analytical semiotic movie tools such as: movie segmentation and gathering of elementary and tensive structures in the suspense genre. Following this horizon, our investigations tend to reveal a gradation of intensity inherent in the formation of this genre. Furthermore, as one of the resources of an audiovisual identity, analysis of semi-simbolics relations points out to a determinant factor in the constitution of filmic images, known as parametrics categories of image and its contrasts. Regarding this, thematic content and the role that discoursive configuration plays in this issue, will be highlighted in this paper. Concerning style, two directions have been identified as constituents of the suspense genre, the style of the genre and the style of the author. Thus, having these principles as guidelines, the corpus of this paper consists of three movies, representatives of the classic movie era, that are involved by the programming of suspense, which gives them a certain status of reference: Citizen Kane by Orson Welles, Anatomy of a murder by Otto Preminger and Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock.
