RHETORICAL STRATEGIES AND POLITICAL GIFT GIVING IN THE ORINOCO DELTA

Rodriguez, Juan Luis 01 May 2011 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the intersection of rhetoric and material exchange in the construction of political alliance and conflict between the Waraos indigenous population and the non-indigenous institutions and political actors in the Orinoco Delta, Venezuela. It deals with the discursive and material strategies used to construct political reality at the moment of the emergence of one of the so-called new South American left wing populist governments (Hugo Chavez presidency since 1998). These historical circumstances present an opportunity to open a discussion bringing together the recent developments of discourse-centered approaches to culture, language ideologies, and the most classical theories on material exchange. This research's aim is to understand how multiple sign systems (in this case language and material gifts) interact, contradict, and support each other. In sum, this dissertation uses the advances of discourse-centered approaches to culture and the anthropological theories of exchange to understand how language and gift giving has shaped history and political imagination in the Orinoco Delta and Venezuela.

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Zootecnia, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2014. / ABSTRACT In the current nutrition precision, maximizing the utilization of nutrients is optimized by the use of additives, which are also important for reducing the excretion of compounds potentially pollute the environment, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Thus, we aimed at, with the development of two experiments to assess the performance of juvenile Nile tilapia subjected to extruded feed containing the enzyme complex SSF (solid fermentation station) added at different stages of processing (before and after extrusion) and the development of tambacu juveniles with diets containing different levels of the same enzyme complex. In experiment 1 with tilapia, 140 animals distributed in five treatments (control (no enzyme), 400 ppm SSF enzyme complex in the mixture prior to extrusion (AE400), 800 ppm SSF enzyme complex in the mixture prior to extrusion (AE800 were used) 400 ppm enzyme "on top" complex SSF added after extrusion (DE400), 800 ppm SSF enzyme complex added "on top" after extrusion (DE800)) with four replications, totaling 20 experimental units. Inclusion of 200 ppm (DE200); Inclusion of 400 ppm (DE400); Inclusion of 600 ppm (DE600), whereas in experiment 2 with tambacu 240 animals distributed into six treatments (Control (without enzymes) were used Inclusion 800 ppm (DE800); Inclusion 1000 ppm (DE1000)) with four replications, totaling 24 experimental units. In both experiments the experimental diets contained the same wording, differing only in the inclusion levels of the enzyme complex SSF. The fish were fed four times a day (8, 11, 14 and 17 hr) to satiation avoiding feed leftovers. The tests were conducted for 56 days in a recirculation system with temperature control, aeration and light. In experiment 1 it was noted that the diets containing the enzyme complex SSF positively influenced weight gain, and the inclusion of the enzyme complex after the extrusion process conducive to performance, recommending the inclusion of tilapia to 800 ppm "on top". In the second experiment, it was observed that the inclusion of 600 ppm SSF enzyme complex "on top" in rations for tambacus promotes better feed conversion ratios. No improvement was observed in the same parameter with increasing inclusion of this complex, being recommended the inclusion of 600 ppm "on top" in rations for tambacus.

Reprodução assistida : um estudo sobre a doação de sêmen no contexto brasileiro / Assisted reproduction: a study on the donation of sperm in the Brazilian context

Ana Paula Cavalcante dos Santos 30 April 2010 (has links)
This study investigated the factors that are conducive to a motivation of individuals to donate semen, aiming to facilitate procreation by ART users. On the social science field, both donation and donors tend to be associated with utilitarianism, the search for pecuniary compensation, deviant behaviors; for some persons interviewed, there were difficulties to assume that they were being altruistic. These matters of personal conduct can be explained by historical and cultural factors. This research has shown that donation motivation should be considered in the spirit of a gift relationship. This study concludes that the donation of semen was primarily motivated by altruism. The almost entire group of donors had to overcome conflicts in the process of sperm collection, which were resolved by a life mission idea. In these terms, according to the investigation results, semen donation should be construed as a social phenomenon inserted into the gift sphere.

Essays in Organizational Economics

Livio, Luca 30 August 2016 (has links)
This thesis consists of three independent essays which contribute to the literatures on organizational and regulatory economics. In the first part of the dissertation, I address questions related to the optimal incentive provision in hierarchies. In particular, I investigate how the choice of the optimal compensation policy of an organization is affected by the workers' psychological preferences for reciprocity. This essay relates to a recent strand of theoretical and empirical research that studies how the presence of reciprocity concerns impacts on the optimal organizational design (See e.g. Dohmen et al. 2009, Englmaier and Leider, 2012, Englmaier et al. 2015).The second part of the dissertation concerns the optimal design and regulation of a hierarchical organization in the presence of capture concerns. In many organizations the task of evaluating an agent's performance is delegated to a third party, a supervisor, who can opportunistically misreport information. The question of how the provision of incentives in hierarchies is affected by the supervisor's opportunism has long been studied in economics. Addressing this research question is of great importance since it can improve our understanding of the internal organization of firms and can have broad applications to regulatory design.

Giving, receiving and reciprocating : A qualitative reanalysis of articles studying disaster aid through gift exchange

Hedenskog, Malin January 2020 (has links)
The impact of international aid is debated in the scholarly literature. One of the theoretical frameworks used to study aid is developed in the Gift [1925] by Marcel Mauss. However, overall there is a lack of knowledge concerning the understanding of Mauss, and how it can be connected to the distribution of aid. Thus, this thesis takes its theoretical departure fromMauss’s gift exchange, and the obligation to give, receive and reciprocate to study how articles examine post-tsunami aid through the theory developed in “The Gift” by Mauss. The study is a qualitative reanalysis of three articles, which is structured by a series of analytical questions based on a broader reading of Mauss, previous research and the gift of disaster aid.The qualitative reanalysis finds that Mauss’ obligations to give, receive and reciprocate and the social bonds that these forms were discussed differently, and to a greater or lesser extent. This study brings “The Gift” by Mauss into light to the discussion of disaster aid, and thus highlighting new potential research for future studies.

"Plnost nicoty" - (Ne)možnost metafyziky u Adorna a Becketta / "The wealth of nothingness" - On the (im)possibility of metaphysics in Adorno and Beckett

Schenk, Jan David January 2021 (has links)
English abstract: "The wealth of nothingness - On the (im)possibility of metaphysics in Adorno and Beckett": The subject of this paper is Theodor W. Adorno's reception of Samuel Beckett and its embedding in his philosophy. Based on an interpretation of Adorno's treatment of the problem of temporality, it is shown that for Adorno Beckett's work both marks the end of time in a bad infinity and at the same time prepares the turn into a fulfilled time. As the opening of a quasi- utopian temporality, it is argued that the engagement with Beckett represents for Adorno as much as the rescue of the possibility of metaphysics and critical theory through its impossibility, moving in the semantics of gift, promise, and gratitude. Keywords: dialectics, temporality, metaphysics, gift, utopia

"Má dáti dar" / The morality of the gift

Stehlíková, Barbora January 2018 (has links)
The thesis looks at the gift and at what kind of morality allows contemporary gift-giving. It is based on ethnographic research that focuses on a "generous social network" Hearth.net. This network was founded by the entrepreneur, philanthropist and buddhist Libor Malý. His goal is to fulfill the vision of improving interpersonal relationships and creating an economic system that is able to complement the existing market economy in the case of a crisis. This system also requires a change of paradigm into the paradigm of generosity and kindness. Adato Paradigma Group and the Ambassadors, who are the most active users of Hearth, help Libor Malý in fulfilling this goal. Hearth is a space where users can offer and receive gifts without an expectation of a counter-gift. The gift should be the tool that will allow the paradigm shift. The new paradigm of generosity and kindness is seen here as a cosmology based above all on the values of generosity and kindness, which is influenced mainly by the spirituality of Libor Malý. At the same time, this paradigm of generosity and kindness forms the moral basis for gift-giving within the Hearth network. Nevertheless, in the final form, the gift is determined by the moral assemblage of three moral dimensions (Zigon 2010). The thesis therefore is analyzing the...
