Modeling human and cities' behaviors: from communication synchronization to spatio-temporal networks

Candeago, Lorenzo 29 June 2020 (has links)
Recent years have seen a huge increase in the amount of data collected from multiple sources: mobile phones are ubiquitous, social networks are widely used, cities are more and more connected and the mobility of people and goods has risen to a global scale. The Big Data Era has opened the doors to new kinds of studies that were unthinkable with previous qualitative methods: human behavior can now be analyzed with a fine-grained resolution, patterns of mobility and behavior can be extracted from the incredible amount of data collected every day. Modern large cities are becoming more and more interconnected and this phenomenon leads to an increasing communication and activities’ synchronization. Due to the amount of data available or for anonymization reasons, it is often necessary to aggregate data spatially and temporally. A natural representation of clustered mobility data is the temporal network representation. In this thesis we focus on these two aspects of spatial distance in human mobility: (i) we study the synchronization of 76 Italian cities, using mobile phone data, showing that both distance between cities and city size determine the synchronization in communication rhythms. Moreover, we show that the effect of the distance in synchronization decreases when the size of the city increases; (ii) we investigate how clustering continuous spatio-temporal data affects spatio-temporal network measures for real-life and synthetic datasets and analyze how spatio-temporal networks’ measures vary at different aggregation levels.

Envisioning the "Sharing City": Governance Strategies for the Sharing Economy

Vith, Sebastian, Oberg, Achim, Höllerer, Markus, Meyer, Renate January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Recent developments around the sharing economy bring to the fore questions of governability and broader societal Benefit-and subsequently the need to explore effective means of public governance, from nurturing, on the one hand, to restriction, on the other. As sharing is a predominately urban phenomenon in modern societies, cities around the globe have become both locus of action and central actor in the debates over the nature and organization of the sharing economy. However, cities vary substantially in the interpretation of potential opportunities and challenges, as well as in their governance responses. Building on a qualitative comparative analysis of 16 leading global cities, our findings reveal four framings of the sharing economy: "societal endangerment","societal enhancement", "market disruption", and "ecological Transition". Such framings go hand in hand with patterned governance responses: although there is considerable heterogeneity in the combination of public governance strategies, we find specific configurations of framings and public governance strategies. Our work reflects the political and ethical debates on various economic, social, and moral issues related to the sharing economy, and contrib-utes to a better understanding of the field-level institutional Arrangements-a prerequisite for examining moral behavior of sharing economy organizations.

Santo André cidade futuro - esta cidade é show: verso e reverso das políticas culturais / Santo André cidade futuro - esta cidade é show: verso e reverso das políticas culturais

Zarate, Simone 06 October 2011 (has links)
This research is about the relationship between the public culture policies and a model of urban intervention (which is nominated strategic planning for global cities) from the comparative analysis of the cultural policies of two government of the Labors Party in Santo Andre city Sao Paulo Brazil (1989-1992/1997-2000). While the political culture in the first government made possible the knowledge appropriation through a network built in cultural programs settled at all corners of the city, in the second government the adopted practice focused the periferic areas through the diffusion of mass culture events and the central areas by the presentations of alternative manifestations. At the same time, the second government of the Labors Party in Santo Andre joined to the strategic planning of the global cities that makes use of cultural actions to city promotion, internal and externally. The analysis was made considering documents, legislation, publicity, newspaper and magazines articles, interviews, testimonies, programs, projects and actions, taking into consideration the heterogeneity and the fragmentation of the cities. The analysis also was crossed by relevant items for the theory of Multiple Streams (agenda-setting) and by the dimensions of the approach of cultural policies.

There were selected for this study the environmental, social and political impacts generated in the region as a whole and specifically in the district. The research focused the comprehension of the complex relationships inherent in the set up and consolidation of the interests represented by several parts involved, i.e., the government, the premises of private enterprises and the ambition of the citizens living in this location. It was made a hystorical survey of the district occupancy and of the development of the roadworks. Taking as theoretical reference the context of mondialization, the ideology of global cities and the culture of road transport in Brazil, there were investigated the peculiarities of the implementation process of the beltway in the region, the role represented by governmet and by private enterprises during the process and the most significant metamorphoses verified in the scope of Perus district. More accurately, the intention was to investigate the consequences of the new reality represented by the construction of the beltway, the contradictions that were established throughout the process and the eventual repercussions for the district / objetivo desta dissertação é refletir sobre os impactos sócioambientais verificados em regiões onde tem se desenvolvido obras viárias infra-estruturais de grande porte, sobretudo as do modal rodoviário, tomando-se como exemplo o distrito de Perus na cidade de São Paulo, onde, no ano de 2002, foi entregue ao tráfego o trecho-oeste do Rodoanel Mário Covas.

The right to the city: redefining multiculturalism in the modern global.

Furtado, Robert 04 May 2012 (has links)
Global capital is transforming the spaces in which we live, thereby transforming culture: this thesis challenges a set of liberal assumptions about culture and cultural transformation by elaborating upon this very hypothesis. Specifically, it argues that cultural identities are being formed in global cities, where disjunctive global flows of cultural, financial, technological, ideological, and human capital intersect. These global flows are creating cultural contexts of choice that can be as central to individual and group identities as national institutions or inherited or native cultural norms. And as these modern contexts of choice emancipate the imagination from the influence of national institutions, they enable peculiar new forms of agency. I use Arjun Appadurai’s notion of imagination and his model of “scapes”—cultural landscapes formed by intersecting flows of capital—to explain how the global is becoming the decisive framework for social life. In contrast, I use Will Kymlicka’s model of multicultural citizenship and Jeremy Waldron’s model of cosmopolitanism primarily to demonstrate the limits of a class of liberal theories of cultural accommodation that oversimplify the relationship of the individual to culture, and of culture to modernity, and which ignore the role of “scapes” in constituting cultural identities. To conclude, I propose an alternative, three- dimensional and ultimately non-comparative treatment of culture inspired by Henri Lefebvre’s concept of the right to the city. / Graduate

[pt] A CIDADE RE-EXISTE: O PROCESSO DE REGENERAÇÃO URBANA NO RIO DE JANEIRO NO CONTEXTO DOS MEGAEVENTOS / [en] THE CITY RE-EXISTS: THE URBAN REGENERATION PROCESS IN RIO DE JANEIRO IN THE CONTEXT OF THE MEGAEVENTS

02 September 2021 (has links)
[en] Departing from a reflection about the production of the city and its relation to the modern International, the present research aims to offer a discussion about the city as another type of global assemblage, which becomes evident in the context of hosting international megaevents – such as the Olympics and the World Cup – that intensify the flows, influence the architecture and end up by producing the urban space of the desired global city through practices and strategies that are centered on the valorization of the capital. The research begins with the investigation of the reinvention of the political space in the context of neoliberalism, understanding the megaevents as a strategy of the production of the global city, in order to think how this is materialized on local struggles and the entanglements of this relations both in people s bodies and in the material space of the city. In this sense, this research will think the urban regeneration process in Rio de Janeiro, through a transversal approach, in the period that the city hosted many megaevents as the Pan American Games, the World Cup and the Olympics, which comprehend the period from 2007 to 2016.
