Producing college and career ready graduates in rural high poverty school districtsHudson, Hilute, III 10 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
This capstone project addresses the crucial task of equipping students from rural and poverty-stricken school districts for success beyond high school. While conventional markers of academic achievement often center around standardized testing, this study takes a wider perspective, emphasizing comprehensive approaches to education. By conducting a quantitative analysis that includes surveys of staff and faculty, this research explores the effectiveness of different strategies aimed at nurturing college and career readiness among students in these districts. The findings demonstrate a powerful narrative: educators can greatly improve graduation rates and post-graduation success by going beyond traditional test preparation methods. Key strategies include developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, encouraging collaboration, providing technology access and digital literacy training, integrating work-based learning opportunities, offering targeted support for at-risk students, ensuring access to rigorous coursework, and exposing students to various career paths. This study highlights the potential for a comprehensive approach to education, empowering students with the skills and resources needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. By embracing these strategies, educators can pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future, particularly in marginalized communities facing educational disparities

The current study aims to answer essentially the following questions, "How do performing teachers of 4th grades of Basic School putting themselves together as teachers?"

Remedial Education: Addressing Contributing FactorsBailey, E. Rowena 05 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This study explored factors that appear to contribute to the growing increase of remedial education in higher education. Participants included teachers and administrators from feeder high schools in northeast Tennessee, local community college instructors of remedial education, and administrators. Participants were experienced and knowledgeable in the field of remedial education.
Personal interviews and public domain documents included documentary material, books, magazines, newspaper articles, and use of the Internet to gather data for the study. Data analyses were broken down by participant group response to questions.
Findings indicated that most graduating high school seniors are not ready for community college or college level studies. Contributing factors appear to be the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (2002), lack of preparation in coursework for elementary and middle school students' entry into high school, lack of communication between the feeder high schools and the local community college, cookie cutter or one-size-fits-all approach to teaching, social promotion with no mastery of coursework, and teaching to tests.

Assessment of Midwifery and Nursing Students’ Nutrition Competence in Ethiopia: A Cross Sectional StudyYimer, Endris Mekonnen, Desta, Firew Ayalew, Akassa, Kefyalew Muleta, Yitaferu, Tadele Bogale, Abebe, Mesfin Goji, Tariku, Mebit Kebede, Gibson, Hannah 13 November 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Background: Malnutrition is a major public health problem in Ethiopia contributing to half of infant and child mortality. The 2014 mini Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey revealed that four out of ten children under five are stunted, nearly one out of ten are wasted, and a quarter are underweight. One of the factors that contributed to the high stunting rate is the shortage of capable providers who are competent to provide nutrition services. The purpose of this study was to assess graduating midwifery and nursing students’ nutrition competence and explore the factors that influence their competence.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was employed in June 2015. Students’ knowledge was assessed using objective written assessment questions; and their skills were assessed using a five-station objectively structured clinical examination. Students’ perception of the nutrition learning environment and their learning experience was obtained by administering a structured questionnaire using interviews. Bivariate and multivariable analysis, including Chi-square test and independent sample t-test, were used to detect statistically significant associations or differences.
Results: A total of 113 students from four public universities in Ethiopia participated in the study. Only 38.1% of students demonstrated adequate competency in nutrition. The mean percentage score for nutrition knowledge and skills were 63.8% and 46.6% respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between midwifery and nursing students’ nutrition competence (P>0.05). Both cadres scored a mean value above 50% in the knowledge assessment, except in the competency areas of nutrition and HIV. However, both showed lesser competence in performing basic nutrition skills such as anthropometry. Midwives scored higher than nurses on counseling mothers on optimal breast feeding (p=0.001). The majority (98.2%) of students reported that they had no access to nutrition skills laboratory when they took the nutrition course. In multivariable analysis, students who perceived the practice sites as conducive for nutrition skills learning achieved higher levels of competence.
Conclusions: The target students were deficient in nutrition competencies. The study suggests revision of midwifery and nursing curricula for adequacy and relevance of nutrition contents, learning and assessment techniques. Nutrition skills learning both in skills lab and at clinical and practical settings need to be strengthened.

[pt] PROFESSORA, FALA ALGUMA COISA BOA DA EDUCAÇÃO PRA GENTE, POR FAVOR!: VIOLÊNCIA, ASSERTIVIDADE E PRESSUPOSTOS ARENDTIANOS NA FORMAÇÃO DOCENTE / [en] TEACHER, PLEASE, TELL US SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT EDUCATION!: VIOLENCE, ASSERTIVENESS AND ARENDTIAN S ASSUMPTIONS IN EDUCATORS FORMATIONMONIQUE MARQUES LONGO 09 April 2015 (has links)
[en] Are all phenomena that go beyond teacher s and the school s control, from dispersion to mass killings, are these expressions of violence? Many of the facets of violence crossing routine school life have destabilized pedagogical experience and at the same time, have been challenged by the lexical and semantic complexity comprised by the term. We assume that defining school violence, means in reality affirming it as socially constructed, addressed and culturally represented in its own designation. But is it, in the sense that the term is approached /negotiated in the courses of teachers training? If school violence is imminent, how are future teachers trained, today, in light of such challenge? The research has as an objective to contribute with deeper thinking about such questions. We have as objective to get the disputed discourses about the concept and the practices of coping with violence in undergraduate courses. We traced a dialogue between the statute of thought proposed by Hannah Arendt and some researchers of Developmental Psychology, such as Deluty, Del Prette, Vinha, Leme and Vicentin, aiming to collaborate with core foundation of proposals of how to face aggressive and submissive behaviors, expressed by interpersonal conflicts. Regarding the conceptual cutout of the term social violence, we have relied on studies of Velho, Da Matta, Maffesoli, emphasizing Hannah Arendt s contributions. As to the conceptual cutout of the term school violence, we dock theoretically in Debarbieux, Itani, Charlot, Arroyo, Abramovay e Candau. A qualitative research was performed in three Higher Education Institutions in Rio de Janeiro: PUC-Rio, UFRJ e UERJ. At first, we analized the curricula and the syllabus of the Philosophy and Sociology Courses of those three institutions. Subsequently, based on Bardin s methodology of analysis of content, we interviewed 18 undergraduate students and 2 teachers, aiming to confirm the real operation of the contents proclaimed. Some considerations were raised: (1) the lack of distinction between the terms violence and others, employed as its synonyms, may make it part of a segregated category of a group labeled as violent offender; (2) the new facets of violence that arise contemporaneously in schools, corroborate the weaknesses of the public in which the school presently seeks to meet. (3) the problem of violence is interrelated to teachers authority crisis when it is not far from an authoritarian act; (4) the lack of discussion about violence in schools, evident in the teachers training courses promotes the neglect of the subject and may also constitute as one of the propelling factors for the index of 75 percent of drop put in the undergraduate programs, according to INEP. Finally, it became clear, the IES s urgency for assuming and facing the destabilization provoked by the question of violence and the promotion of a space and time dedicated for the practice of thought in schools may constitute a possibility of this confrontation.
