Under Terra Novas Stenar : en osteologisk- & arkeologisk analys av ett bronsåldersröse på Gotland / Underneath the stones of Terra Nova : an osteological- and archaeological analysis of a cairn from the Bronze Age on Gotland

Westerberg, Felicia January 2012 (has links)
This paper discusses an osteological- and archeological analysis of a cairn from the Bronze Age on Gotland. The osteological material consists of both burnt and and unburnt bones from both human and animal. The objective of this paper is to shed light on the individuals who were buried in the cairn. It is also to generate information about continuity in its use and patterns of distribution of the bones and grave-goods in the cairn. The osteological analysis show that a minimum of five human individuals is present in the osteological material. The result also indicate that a wide range of agegroups are represented in the human bonematerial, ranging between; Infans 2 (5-14 years), Adultus (18-44 years) and Adultus/Maturus (18-64 years). The osteological analysis also show a presence of horse, pig, sheep/goat, dog and rabbit in the cairn. Due to high fragmentation and erosion no gender assessment based on the human bonematerial was made. Grave findings connected to the cairn include among other things a razor in bronze,  a pin in bronze with a spiralshaped head, a tweezer- and a miniaturesword in bronze, ceramics, coal and flint. Some of the bronze findings indicate that one of the buried individuals in the grave is of male gender. The possible meaning and role of the grave-goods in connection to the cairn and the buried individuals is discussed further in the paper. The continuity of the cairn and its roll and meaning in the society is also discussed in this thesis.

Anonymous artefacts and revealing runes : Scandinavian runic artefacts from a gender perspective / Anonyma artefakter och avslöjande runor : runristade föremål från Skandinavien ur ett genusperspektiv

Andersson, Elin January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to examine a group of runic artefacts dated to the Viking Age (800-1050 AD) from a gender perspective. The analysed material consists of 59 runic artefacts from Scandinavia, which differ in regards to base material, context and content. In the analysis, the material is separated, described and classified into different manageable groups of texts and artefacts. Several case studies are presented in the paper, based on information gathered from the inscriptions as well as the archaeological material. The main issue is whether it is possible to attribute runic artefacts to a specific gender by means of a combination of archaeological and philological methods.

Axelsson, Emma January 2009 (has links)
This essay deals with a cultic building which focuses on the stone feature during the Bronze Age in Sweden and Denmark. I will discuss about the meaning of the stone feature and it also deals with the surrounding next to the building in order to see a bigger perspective. It consists of five excavations which this essay is based upon. The five excavations are Sandergård in Denmark, Broby and Hågahagen in Uppland, Tofta and Koarum in Skåne.

Karlsson, Hanna January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to see if there are any relationship between the four Megalithic graves, and the newly excavated dwelling site in Resmo socken on Öland. The Megalithic graves on Öland consist of one dolmen and three passage graves. Is the excavated site a settlement? Since there are no signs of housing constructions, I will also explore other possible purposes of the site. What surprised the excavators was the concentration of pits that contained ceramics, flints and burned bones. To find out about Resmo´s relation to megaliths, settlements and the landscape, I will look at the Neolithic settlement sites of the Funnel Beaker Culture and where in the landscape we find these in relation to the Megalithic graves. I will also give an overview of the Megalithic graves in Skåne, and Falbygden in Västergötland.

Ensamgravar och gravfält : olika begravningsmönster under romersk järnålder på Gotland / Solitary Graves and Grave Fields : different burial patterns during Roman Iron Age on Gotland

Stenström, Karin January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to make a comparison between solitary graves and graves in grave fields from the Roman Iron Age on Gotland, Sweden. Differences in burial customs, morphology, dating, gender, age, grave-goods and social status are compared between 19 solitary graves and graves in three different grave fields in different parts of Gotland. An attempt is made to explain these differences and to discuss which functions the solitary graves had. Discussions about whether it is possible to distinguish social status and gender with the help of grave-goods are also made in connection to the determination of status and sex.

Carreau, Anne-Marie January 2012 (has links)

Environmental factors affecting an experimental low-density mass grave near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Nagy, Michael A 11 1900 (has links)
The investigation of mass graves involves aspects of high political, judicial, and emotional impact. Understanding how bodies held within mass graves change between the time they are deposited and the time they are discovered (the realm of forensic taphonomy) is vital for competent collection of evidence and accurate evaluation of the scene. This thesis explores these issues by detailing experimental research undertaken to better understand the affects of environmental factors on low-density, orderly placement mass graves. Issues pertaining to how decomposition of bodies in contact differs from that of single bodies, intentional disturbance, and temperature change were examined experimentally using pigs as human analogues over a period of almost one year outside of Edmonton, Canada. There are three primary avenues in which the information obtained can be applied to the real world: estimation of elapsed time since death, planning mass grave investigations and reducing evidence loss, and evaluating post-burial disturbance or intentional vandalism.
