Labirinto de espelhos. Dispositivos e configurações do impasse em Bouvard ePécuchet, de Gustave Flaubert / Mirror Labyrinth devices and configurations of the impasse in Bouvard and Pécuchet, by Gustave Flaubert.Flavio Luis Soares de Barros 15 April 2011 (has links)
The impossibility of deciding (undecidability) is presented to the reader in Bouvard and Pécuchet, by Gustave Flaubert, from different perspectives, evidencing the repetition of the idea of impasse, understood as a situation that has a difficult or seemingly impossible solution. Associated to the narrative, the reading act, and the writing process, the successive impasses relate to the concept of labyrinth, setting in motion continuities and ruptures of a rich literary lineage, described by Hugh Kenner in The Stoic Comedians. While allowing conflicting opinions to coexist and, more than that, allowing for the difficulty of their reconciliation, disruption of causal logic is suggested, resulting in a narrative no longer based on events, but in the treatment of linguistic material. Theoretical considerations on the functioning and the effects of the text studied are addressed, taking into account the recent reflections about the paradoxes of fiction and the limits of narrative, from a manifold perspective. The starting points are the bêtise, the encyclopedic character, Copy and the comic aspect of the novel, always having the use of knowledge as focal point. Finally, parallels between flaubertian procedures and some procedures adopted since the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century by artists of various forms of expression are drawn, seeking to establish possible dialogues.

Considerações sobre o valor restritivo no binômio \'ne... que\' em francês moderno / About the restrictive value in the expressions \'ne... que\' in modern FrenchTeresa Cristina Silveira Hilst 03 August 2007 (has links)
Prescriptive, descriptive and semantic grammars, as well as other works dealing with negation and restrictions in modern French, describe the expressions ne... que, sans que, rien que, bien que, autre que, nul autre que and pour peu que by a variety of theoretical approaches without describing their semantic values, their very nature and the functions of que. Moreover, these works do not distinguish the value of que from those associated with it. This study, founded on the principles of psico-mechanic theory elaborated by Gustave Guillaume (1971, 1973) and expanded by grammatical semantic studies made by Prof. Jacques Ouellet, M.A. (2004), tries to identify, understand and explain the functioning of restrictive que, found in the above-mentioned expressions, especially in ne... que.

From Sacred to Spectacular: Gustave Doré's Biblical ImagerySchaefer, Sarah January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation argues that the biblical imagery of Gustave Doré (1832-83) successfully conveyed various modern ways of encountering the Bible, in both sacred and secular contexts. Doré was one of the most popular artists in nineteenth-century Europe and America, and his images have continued to be widely reproduced (to date, his Bible illustrations have been incorporated into over 700 publications). Emerging at a time when the Bible was taking on cultural roles beyond the moral and theological, Doré's images negotiated the challenges facing biblical representation, and introduced generations around the world to a new and modern way of understanding Judeo-Christian scripture. From the emergence of the "Bible as literature," to Holy Land archaeology, to the spectacularization of biblical narratives, to modern religious pedagogy, the impact of Doré's biblical pictures was felt on a scale heretofore unknown. More broadly, this project deals with the intersection of art, religion, and modernity through the study of one influential artist. The history of Doré's images extends across temporal, geographical, and denominational boundaries, and is crucial for understanding how the Bible has maintained its sacred and secular functions through the present day.
Despite his centrality to the nineteenth-century art world, Doré's work has maintained a relatively marginal place in standard art histories. Art historians and sociologists of religion are becoming increasingly interested in the importance of religious imagery in modernity and Doré's works are often invoked, but there has yet to be a sustained study of the forms, history, and persuasive power of his images. Redressing art history's meager attention to modern religious art, I hope not only to recuperate Doré for art history, but also, more generally, to demonstrate how religious art helped make us modern.

Integrating a thematic perspective and textual analysis into the method, this Master's thesis proposes to study the theme and images of death in Madame Bovary. This essay analyses the representation of death, the relationships with the survivors and the links with the main character. It demonstrates the egoistic perception of death among the survivors and explains the thematic advancement in chapter VIII of the third part of the novel. The peripheral elements of death, such as the character Lestiboudois, the cemetery, the taboos and the generally accepted ideas, are studied in the first chapter. The second is devoted to Emma Bovary's romantic conception of death, through an analysis of artistic influences and inspirations, romantic mysticism, and complacency with regards to the idea of death. I will be studying the causes of her suicide, her desire to die, her distress experienced in love, her financial bankruptcy and her emotional and physical disequilibrium in the third chapter, which ends with the study of the thematic "spiral" in chapter VIII of the third section: the race, God, time, love, nature, anguish, emotional and physical disequilibrium and death, without neglecting the various interpretations of the Blind Man's ditty. In the fourth chapter, I study the mourning, suffering and social conventions, the influence from beyond the grave upon the survivors, the grave, the memories and immortality. Finally, the last chapter, so as to integrate the various notions explained in the preceding chapters, analyses the consequences of each death in the novel upon the survivors and their reactions.
