Motion, Space and Sound

Hernandez Trias, Gerardo Martin 11 January 2017 (has links)
As part of our daily routines, we continually move from one space to another. The existing conditions of the spaces we move through often impact the way we experience architecture. Whether we transition between spaces by walking, cycling, running, driving a car, or riding the train, we face many challenges on a daily basis. As it is crucial that designers understand how one single person or a group of people are able to move efficiently through the various spaces, my thesis research aimed at to exploring the following question: How can architecture enrich the experience of moving from one space to another, and bring people together into a shared space in a meaningful way? In response to the above question, I would like to research the ways in which mobility, in both vertical and horizontal dimensions, can create a positive and meaningful impact when bringing people together in a commercial-cultural type space. Therefore, my focus within this topic will be an exploration of how architecture may enrich this human experience, which should begin from the moment people arrive at the site, as this is a major space component of my project. Proceeding the moment we enter the first space of a building, and subsequently the different spaces within the building, and finally exiting the site. To accomplish the above aim, I have chosen to design a performing arts facility in which the main space will be an opera house in a metropolitan setting. Since the District of Columbia already has two such venues, I landed on the idea of providing the City of Alexandria with one of its very own. I propose The Alexandria Performing Arts Center, located on a waterfront site, that will include an opera house with a capacity of 1,400. The site is located at the Robinson Terminal North between Oronoco and Pendleton Street. / Master of Architecture

Proteólise miofibrilar e maciez da carne de bovinos (Bos indicus) submetidos a diferentes técnicas pós-morte de resfriamento das carcaças / Myofibril fragmentation index and shear force of Bos indicus steers and heifers submitted to different hanging positions during chilling

Silva, Eliane Bonifácio 18 November 2005 (has links)
The objective of this work was to evaluate the carcass hanging position during the chilling period in which 1st experiment: alternate sides of ten Nellore steers were hang either by the traditional way (Achilles tendon) or placed horizontally over pallets or 2nd experiment: alternate sides of 16 Nellore steers and 16 Nellore heifers were hang either by the Achilles tendon or by the Carpus radial muscle of the forequarter. Longissimus dorsi muscle samples at the 12th rib level were removed from all sides (42 left and 42 right sides) after a 24 hr chilling period, vacuum packaged and aged for 7 days before being frozen and kept for future analysis of shear force, cooking losses and Myofibril fragmentation index (MFI). For the first experiment no differences were observed for fat thickness, cooking losses, shear force and MFI. In the second experiment there was not differences for fat thickness between treatments but heifers showed a thicker fat layer than steers. For cooking losses and shear force there was not differences although for the MFI and hanging position between heifers and steers were observed. The MFI average of the treatment hang by the Carpus radial muscle were higher than the treatment hang by the Achilles tendon.

The Influence of Under Sleeper Pads on Railway Track Dynamics

Witt, Stephen January 2008 (has links)
In this work the influence of Under Sleeper Pads on the dynamic forces on a railway track is investigated. A special interest is devoted to the effect of using Under Sleeper Pads in a railway track with changing vertical stiffness. The contact force between wheel and rail and the ballast contact forces are examined. For the investigation a finite element model with the length of thirty sleepers is created and calculations are performed with the software LS-DYNA. Three different cases of varying vertical track stiffness are studied: the transition from an embankment to a bridge, a randomly varying track stiffness along the railway track and hanging sleepers.

Liu Xiaodong 刘小东 Xiao Dou Hanging Out at the Pool Hall

Sikström Nilsson, Anne-Charlotte January 2011 (has links)
Resultatet visades på UCCA, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art i Beijing. Mitt syfte har varit att tolka Lius Xiao Dou Hanging Out at the Pool Hall bland annat utifrån ett marxistisktfeministiskt förhållningssätt.

The cinematic mystical gaze: the films of Peter Weir

Leonard, Richard James Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
Peter Weir is one of Australia’s most critically acclaimed and commercially successful directors. Ever since Weirs feature film debut with The Cars that Ate Paris in 1974, his work has been explored for unifying themes. Scholars have analysed his films from many perspectives: the establishment of identification and identity especially through binary oppositions in the diegesis; the creation of an oneiric atmosphere as a way of exploiting the spectators dream experience; a clash of value systems; the ambiguous nature of narrative structure and character motivations leading to the creation of a sense of wonder; the experience of the protagonist placed in a foreign culture wherein conflict arises from social clashes and personal misunderstandings; and at the particular ways his films adapt generic codes in service of a discernible ideological agenda. . To the best of my knowledge there has been no study of the mystical element of Weirs work in relation to the construction of a cinematic mystical gaze or act of spectatorship. / Within a culture defined by its secularity and a national cinema marked by quirky comedies and social realism, almost all of Weirs films have been described as mystical, arcane or interested in metaphysics. Such an observation could warrant no further investigation if it is held that this critical commentary is but hyperbole in its attempt to grasp what constitutes a Peter Weir film. If, however, language constructs meaning, then the recurrence of references to Weirs mysticism needs to be taken seriously to see what effect this might have exerted on the nature and structure of the Weir text. I will argue that the major consequence of Weirs fascination with the mystical has been the construction of a mystical mode of spectatorship. Furthermore, because other directors and films have been described in similar ways this study opens up a discussion about whether these observations about the mystical qualities in the viewing experience hold importance for other filmmakers, and theories of the gaze in the cinema.

Automated Setup of Display Protocols

Bergström, Patrik January 2015 (has links)
Radiologists' workload has been steadily increasing for decades. As digital technology matures it improves the workflow for radiology departments and decreases the time necessary to examine patients. Computer systems are widely used in health care and are for example used to view radiology images. To simplify this, display protocols based on examination data are used to automatically create a layout and hang images for the user. To cover a wide variety of examinations hundreds of protocols must be created, which is a time-consuming task and the system can still fail to hang series if strict requirements on the protocols are not met. To remove the need for this manual step we propose to use machine learning based on past manually corrected presentations. The classifiers are trained on the metadata in the examination and how the radiologist preferred to hang the series. The chosen approach was to create classifiers for different layout rules and then use these predictions in an algorithm for assigning series types to individual image slots according to categories based on metadata, similar to how display protocol works. The resulting presentations shows that the system is able to learn, but must increase its prediction accuracy if it is to be used commercially. Analyses of the different parts show that increased accuracy in early steps should improve overall success.

Automatická hp-adaptivita na sítích s visícími uzly libovolné úrovně ve 3D / Automatic hp-adaptivity on Meshes with Arbitrary-Level Hanging Nodes in 3D

Kůs, Pavel January 2011 (has links)
The thesis is concerned with theoretical and practical aspects of the hp- adaptive finite element method for solving elliptic and electromagnetic prob- lems described by partial differential equations in three spatial dimensions. Besides the standard element refinements, the hp-adaptivity allows indepen- dent adaptation of degrees of the polynomial approximation as well. This leads to exponentially fast convergence even for problems with singularities. The efficiency of the hp-adaptivity is enhanced even more by the ability of the algorithm to work with meshes with arbitrary-level hanging nodes. This generality, however, leads to great complexity of the implementation. There- fore, the thesis concentrates on the mathematical analysis of algorithms that have led to successful implementation of the method. In addition, the the- sis discusses the numerical integration in 3D and the implementation of the method itself. Finally, numerical results obtained by this new implemen- tation are presented. They confirm advantages of hp-adaptivity on meshes with arbitrary-level hanging nodes. 1
