Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird is an iconic classic that inspired many street lawyer novels. Examining John Grisham’s A Time To Kill as a low-culture-imprint of Lee’s novel, the thesis analyzes the convergent and divergent points of rhetorical devices that promote colour-blind liberalism across the two texts seeing as they are published 30 years apart. Both pieces of legal fiction act as a reflection and critique of formal legal institutions and through this reflection, the thesis deals with how the texts reinforce, perpetuate and resist the white dominant ideology through the “progressive” race politics of colorblind liberalism.

Plusieurs indices permettent de croire que la politique étrangère canadienne ainsi que l’Aide publique au développement (APD) ont été remodelées de manière considérable durant la dernière décennie. Sur plusieurs thèmes, l’arrivée du gouvernement conservateur de Stephen Harper coïncide avec ces changements. Parmi ceux-ci, il semble que certaines Organisations non gouvernementales religieuses (ONGR) en partenariat avec l’Agence canadienne de développement international (ACDI) soient favorisées dans leur financement fédéral. L’objectif de ce mémoire est donc, dans un premier temps, de quantifier cette tendance dans l’allocation des fonds de l’APD. Dans un second temps, il s’agit d’expliquer les raisons ayant initié ce virage du régime de l’APD canadienne. L’hypothèse de recherche est que l’aspect religieux de l’idéologie du cabinet de Stephen Harper constitue un élément fort de la culture stratégique (CS) qui modifie le comportement et les décisions quant à la gestion de son régime de l’APD. Ce mémoire, en utilisant une démarche empirique, démontre que les théories institutionnalistes typiquement utilisées dans les études de l’APD ne permettent pas de saisir adéquatement le phénomène observé. Ce mémoire résout de manière novatrice ce déficit théorique en utilisant le concept de la culture stratégique et les approches constructivistes. / Several indicators suggest that Canadian foreign policy and the Official Development Assistance (ODA) have been remodeled significantly during the last decade. Several of these changes coincide with the arrival of the Conservative government of Stephen Harper. Of these, it seems that some religious non-governmental organizations (RNGO) in partnership with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) are favored in their federal funding. The objective of this thesis is twofold; first, to quantify the trend in the allocation of funds to the RNGO. The second objective is to explain the reasons for this shift in the orientation of Canadian ODA. The research hypothesis is that the religious aspect of the ideology of the Harper cabinet is a strong element of its strategic culture that can influence the behavior and decisions facing the management of its ODA. This thesis, using an empirical approach, shows that institutionalism theories typically used in the studies of ODA do capture adequately the observed phenomenon. This thesis solves in a novel way, this theoretical gap by using the concept of strategic culture and constructivist approaches.

Traducteur au pays des merveilles est une exploration de la traduction de L’écume des jours (1947) de Boris Vian. Les deux traductions du livre, Froth on the Daydream (1967) (Mood Indigo) de Stanley Chapman et Foam of the Daze (2003) de Brian Harper, font l’objet d’une comparaison portant sur les éléments propres à l’écriture de Vian. La première partie porte, de manière générale, sur les tendances des traducteurs et les critiques des textes traduits. La deuxième partie met l’accent sur les références culturelles et leurs traductions dans l’avant-propos et le premier chapitre. Ensuite, trois méthodes de création des néologismes (proposées par Jacques Bens) servent de point de départ à une exploration du langage « vianesque » dans la troisième partie. L’analyse de l’écriture de Boris Vian dans L’écume des jours ainsi que des méthodes des traducteurs, nous permet d’observer les effets de style émanant des trois textes. The two translations of the book, Froth on the Daydream (1967) (Mood Indigo) and Foam of the Daze (2003), are compared here in regards to particular elements of Vian’s writing. The first part examines in a general manner, the tendencies of the translators and the critique of the translated texts. The concentration of the second part is on the cultural references from the foreword and the first chapter as well as their translations. Three methods for creating neologisms (put forth by Jacques Bens) then serve as a starting point for the exploration of the “vianesque” language in the third part. This thesis expands upon the concept of the global culture wars in sub-Saharan Africa from a Canadian perspective, focusing on the growing division within Canada between conservative, religious values and liberal, progressive ones (Caplan, 2012). This division led to a political and cultural realignment alongside the increased visibility and leadership of religious and faith communities in Canadian public and political life. Amidst this polarization, Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper was elected Prime Minister in February 2006. Under his leadership, a conservative, pro-family agenda was established. This agenda, which advocates a traditional understanding of family life and structure, in particular refers to a legally married, heterosexual couple with children. It was supported by the evangelical Christian population in Canada, which grew from a united religious community in Canada into a significant constituency of the Conservative Party. Harper’s tenure, coupled with the increased visibility and leadership of faith and religious communities significantly affected domestic and international policies during his tenure as Prime Minister, from 2006 to 2015. This thesis examines the Muskoka Initiative on Maternal, Child, and Newborn Health (Muskoka-MNCH) and shows how this initiative, which fostered anti-abortion rhetoric abroad, was utilized to appease the evangelical community’s anti-abortion position in Canada.

In current era of globalization when cultural diplomacy became one of the inherent tools of "soft power" of a foreign policy, it is relevant to research on the place of cultural diplomacy in foreign policy portfolio of nation-states. The focus of this thesis is to evaluate the attitudes of the Canadian government towards cultural diplomacy from 1990s until today. In 1995, Canadian values and culture became one of the three pillars of Canadian foreign policy. The author therefore attempted to map whether cultural diplomacy became a coherent and strategic tool of the Canadian foreign policy during this era. By analyzing the tools of the Canadian cultural diplomacy of the Liberal governments of Jean Chretien, Paul Martin and the present Conservative government of Stephen Harper, the author seeks to answer whether we are witnessing a gradual eclipse of cultural diplomacy as a means of soft power under the Harper administration. The research of government documents and cultural diplomacy programs along with the analysis of interviews with important government officials suggest that the cultural diplomacy was not practiced as a strategic tool in foreign policy management until the third election term of Jean Chretien in the year of 2000. This dissertation presents a self-contained study of periodically-driven quantum systems. Following a brief introduction to Floquet theory, we introduce the inverse-frequency expansion, variants of which include the Floquet-Magnus, van Vleck, and Brillouin-Wigner expansions. We reveal that the convergence properties of these expansions depend strongly on the rotating frame chosen, and relate the former to the existence of Floquet resonances in the quasienergy spectrum. The theoretical design and experimental realisation (`engineering') of novel Floquet Hamiltonians is discussed introducing three universal high-frequency limits for systems comprising single-particle and many-body linear and nonlinear models. The celebrated Schrieffer-Wolff transformation for strongly-correlated quantum systems is generalised to periodically-driven systems, and a systematic approach to calculate higher-order corrections to the Rotating Wave Approximation is presented. Next, we develop Floquet adiabatic perturbation theory from first principles, and discuss extensively the adiabatic state preparation and the corresponding leading-order non-adiabatic corrections. Special emphasis is thereby put on geometrical and topological objects, such as the Floquet Berry curvature and the Floquet Chern number obtained within linear response in the presence of the drive. Last, pre-thermalisation and thermalisation in closed, clean periodically-driven quantum systems are studied in detail, with the focus put on the crucial role of Floquet many-body resonances for energy absorption.
